12:1	And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.
12:2	And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)
12:3	That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,
12:4	Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.
12:5	And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.
12:6	And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?
12:7	And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.
12:8	But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:
12:9	And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?
12:10	And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins.
12:11	And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
12:12	So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.
12:13	And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men's counsel that they gave him;
12:14	And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
12:15	Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
12:16	So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.
12:17	But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
12:18	Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
12:19	So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
12:20	And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.
12:21	And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.
12:22	But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
12:23	Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
12:24	Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.
12:25	Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.
12:26	And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:
12:27	If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.
12:28	Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
12:29	And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.
12:30	And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.
12:31	And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.
12:32	And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.
12:33	So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.


12:1	וילך רחבעם שׁכם כי שׁכם בא כל ישׂראל להמליך אתו׃
12:2	ויהי כשׁמע ירבעם בן נבט והוא עודנו במצרים אשׁר ברח מפני המלך שׁלמה וישׁב ירבעם במצרים׃
12:3	וישׁלחו ויקראו לו ויבאו ירבעם וכל קהל ישׂראל וידברו אל רחבעם לאמר׃
12:4	אביך הקשׁה את עלנו ואתה עתה הקל מעבדת אביך הקשׁה ומעלו הכבד אשׁר נתן עלינו ונעבדך׃
12:5	ויאמר אליהם לכו עד שׁלשׁה ימים ושׁובו אלי וילכו העם׃
12:6	ויועץ המלך רחבעם את הזקנים אשׁר היו עמדים את פני שׁלמה אביו בהיתו חי לאמר איך אתם נועצים להשׁיב את העם הזה דבר׃
12:7	וידבר אליו לאמר אם היום תהיה עבד לעם הזה ועבדתם ועניתם ודברת אליהם דברים טובים והיו לך עבדים כל הימים׃
12:8	ויעזב את עצת הזקנים אשׁר יעצהו ויועץ את הילדים אשׁר גדלו אתו אשׁר העמדים לפניו׃
12:9	ויאמר אליהם מה אתם נועצים ונשׁיב דבר את העם הזה אשׁר דברו אלי לאמר הקל מן העל אשׁר נתן אביך עלינו׃
12:10	וידברו אליו הילדים אשׁר גדלו אתו לאמר כה תאמר לעם הזה אשׁר דברו אליך לאמר אביך הכביד את עלנו ואתה הקל מעלינו כה תדבר אליהם קטני עבה ממתני אבי׃
12:11	ועתה אבי העמיס עליכם על כבד ואני אוסיף על עלכם אבי יסר אתכם בשׁוטים ואני איסר אתכם בעקרבים׃
12:12	ויבו ירבעם וכל העם אל רחבעם ביום השׁלישׁי כאשׁר דבר המלך לאמר שׁובו אלי ביום השׁלישׁי׃
12:13	ויען המלך את העם קשׁה ויעזב את עצת הזקנים אשׁר יעצהו׃
12:14	וידבר אליהם כעצת הילדים לאמר אבי הכביד את עלכם ואני אסיף על עלכם אבי יסר אתכם בשׁוטים ואני איסר אתכם בעקרבים׃
12:15	ולא שׁמע המלך אל העם כי היתה סבה מעם יהוה למען הקים את דברו אשׁר דבר יהוה ביד אחיה השׁילני אל ירבעם בן נבט׃
12:16	וירא כל ישׂראל כי לא שׁמע המלך אליהם וישׁבו העם את המלך דבר לאמר מה לנו חלק בדוד ולא נחלה בבן ישׁי לאהליך ישׂראל עתה ראה ביתך דוד וילך ישׂראל לאהליו׃
12:17	ובני ישׂראל הישׁבים בערי יהודה וימלך עליהם רחבעם׃
12:18	וישׁלח המלך רחבעם את אדרם אשׁר על המס וירגמו כל ישׂראל בו אבן וימת והמלך רחבעם התאמץ לעלות במרכבה לנוס ירושׁלם׃
12:19	ויפשׁעו ישׂראל בבית דוד עד היום הזה׃
12:20	ויהי כשׁמע כל ישׂראל כי שׁב ירבעם וישׁלחו ויקראו אתו אל העדה וימליכו אתו על כל ישׂראל לא היה אחרי בית דוד זולתי שׁבט יהודה לבדו׃
12:21	ויבאו רחבעם ירושׁלם ויקהל את כל בית יהודה ואת שׁבט בנימן מאה ושׁמנים אלף בחור עשׂה מלחמה להלחם עם בית ישׂראל להשׁיב את המלוכה לרחבעם בן שׁלמה׃
12:22	ויהי דבר האלהים אל שׁמעיה אישׁ האלהים לאמר׃
12:23	אמר אל רחבעם בן שׁלמה מלך יהודה ואל כל בית יהודה ובנימין ויתר העם לאמר׃
12:24	כה אמר יהוה לא תעלו ולא תלחמון עם אחיכם בני ישׂראל שׁובו אישׁ לביתו כי מאתי נהיה הדבר הזה וישׁמעו את דבר יהוה וישׁבו ללכת כדבר יהוה׃
12:25	ויבן ירבעם את שׁכם בהר אפרים וישׁב בה ויצא משׁם ויבן את פנואל׃
12:26	ויאמר ירבעם בלבו עתה תשׁוב הממלכה לבית דוד׃
12:27	אם יעלה העם הזה לעשׂות זבחים בבית יהוה בירושׁלם ושׁב לב העם הזה אל אדניהם אל רחבעם מלך יהודה והרגני ושׁבו אל רחבעם מלך יהודה׃
12:28	ויועץ המלך ויעשׂ שׁני עגלי זהב ויאמר אלהם רב לכם מעלות ירושׁלם הנה אלהיך ישׂראל אשׁר העלוך מארץ מצרים׃
12:29	וישׂם את האחד בבית אל ואת האחד נתן בדן׃
12:30	ויהי הדבר הזה לחטאת וילכו העם לפני האחד עד דן׃
12:31	ויעשׂ את בית במות ויעשׂ כהנים מקצות העם אשׁר לא היו מבני לוי׃
12:32	ויעשׂ ירבעם חג בחדשׁ השׁמיני בחמשׁה עשׂר יום לחדשׁ כחג אשׁר ביהודה ויעל על המזבח כן עשׂה בבית אל לזבח לעגלים אשׁר עשׂה והעמיד בבית אל את כהני הבמות אשׁר עשׂה׃
12:33	ויעל על המזבח אשׁר עשׂה בבית אל בחמשׁה עשׂר יום בחדשׁ השׁמיני בחדשׁ אשׁר בדא מלבד ויעשׂ חג לבני ישׂראל ויעל על המזבח להקטיר׃


12:1	And Rehoboam goeth to Shechem, for to Shechem hath all Israel come to make him king.
12:2	And it cometh to pass, at Jeroboam son of Nebat's hearing (and he `is' yet in Egypt where he hath fled from the presence of Solomon the king, and Jeroboam dwelleth in Egypt),
12:3	that they send and call for him; and they come -- Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel -- and speak unto Rehoboam, saying,
12:4	`Thy father made hard our yoke, and thou, now, make light `some' of the hard service of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we serve thee.'
12:5	And he saith unto them, `Go -- yet three days, and come back unto me;' and the people go.
12:6	And king Rehoboam consulteth with the elders who have been standing in the presence of Solomon his father, in his being alive, saying, `How are ye counselling to answer this people?'
12:7	And they speak unto him, saying, `If, to-day, thou art servant to this people, and hast served them, and answered them, and spoken unto them good words, then they have been to thee servants all the days.'
12:8	And he forsaketh the counsel of the elders which they counselled him, and consulteth with the lads who have grown up with him, who are standing before him;
12:9	and he saith unto them, `What are ye counselling, and we answer this people, who have spoken unto me, saying, Lighten `somewhat' of the yoke that thy father put upon us?'
12:10	And they speak unto him -- the lads who had grown up with him -- saying, `Thus dost thou say to this people who have spoken unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, and thou, make `it' light upon us; thus dost thou speak unto them, My little `finger' is thicker than the loins of my father;
12:11	and now, my father laid on you a heavy yoke, and I add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- I chastise you with scorpions.'
12:12	And they come -- Jeroboam and all the people -- unto Rehoboam, on the third day, as the king had spoken, saying, `Come back unto me on the third day.'
12:13	And the king answereth the people sharply, and forsaketh the counsel of the elders which they counselled him,
12:14	and speaketh unto them, according to the counsel of the lads, saying, `My father made your yoke heavy, and I add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- I chastise you with scorpions;'
12:15	and the king hearkened not unto the people, for the revolution was from Jehovah, in order to establish His word that Jehovah spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam son of Nebat.
12:16	And all Israel see that the king hath not hearkened unto them, and the people send the king back word, saying, `What portion have we in David? yea, there is no inheritance in the son of Jesse; to thy tents, O Israel; now see thy house, O David!' and Israel goeth to its tents.
12:17	As to the sons of Israel, those dwelling in the cities of Judah -- over them reign doth Rehoboam.
12:18	And king Rehoboam sendeth Adoram who `is' over the tribute, and all Israel cast at him stones, and he dieth; and king Rehoboam hath strengthened himself to go up into a chariot to flee to Jerusalem;
12:19	and Israel transgresseth against the house of David unto this day.
12:20	And it cometh to pass, at all Israel's hearing that Jeroboam hath returned, that they send and call him unto the company, and cause him to reign over all Israel; none hath been after the house of David save the tribe of Judah alone.
12:21	And Rehoboam cometh to Jerusalem, and assembleth all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand chosen warriors, to fight with the house of Israel, to bring back the kingdom to Rehoboam son of Solomon.
12:22	And the word of God is unto Shemaiah a man of God, saying,
12:23	`Speak unto Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and the rest of the people, saying,
12:24	Thus said Jehovah, Ye do not go up nor fight with your brethren the sons of Israel; turn back each to his house, for from Me hath this thing been;' and they hear the word of Jehovah, and turn back to go according to the word of Jehovah.
12:25	And Jeroboam buildeth Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and dwelleth in it, and goeth out thence, and buildeth Penuel;
12:26	and Jeroboam saith in his heart, `Now doth the kingdom turn back to the house of David --
12:27	if this people go up to make sacrifices in the house of Jehovah in Jerusalem, then hath the heart of this people turned back unto their lord, unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they have slain me, and turned back unto Rehoboam king of Judah.'
12:28	And the king taketh counsel, and maketh two calves of gold, and saith unto them, `Enough to you of going up to Jerusalem; lo, thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.'
12:29	And he setteth the one in Beth-El, and the other he hath put in Dan,
12:30	and this thing becometh a sin, and the people go before the one -- unto Dan.
12:31	And he maketh the house of high places, and maketh priests of the extremities of the people, who were not of the sons of Levi;
12:32	and Jeroboam maketh a festival in the eighth month, in the fifteenth day of the month, like the festival that `is' in Judah, and he offereth on the altar -- so did he in Beth-El -- to sacrifice to the calves which he made, and he hath appointed in Beth-El the priests of the high places that he made.
12:33	And he offereth up on the altar that he made in Beth-El, on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, in the month that he devised of his own heart, and he maketh a festival to the sons of Israel, and offereth on the altar -- to make perfume.
