2 Kings - Chapter: 10


10:1	And Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote letters, and sent to Samaria, unto the rulers of Jezreel, to the elders, and to them that brought up Ahab's children, saying,
10:2	Now as soon as this letter cometh to you, seeing your master's sons are with you, and there are with you chariots and horses, a fenced city also, and armour;
10:3	Look even out the best and meetest of your master's sons, and set him on his father's throne, and fight for your master's house.
10:4	But they were exceedingly afraid, and said, Behold, two kings stood not before him: how then shall we stand?
10:5	And he that was over the house, and he that was over the city, the elders also, and the bringers up of the children, sent to Jehu, saying, We are thy servants, and will do all that thou shalt bid us; we will not make any king: do thou that which is good in thine eyes.
10:6	Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, If ye be mine, and if ye will hearken unto my voice, take ye the heads of the men your master's sons, and come to me to Jezreel by to morrow this time. Now the king's sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, which brought them up.
10:7	And it came to pass, when the letter came to them, that they took the king's sons, and slew seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets, and sent him them to Jezreel.
10:8	And there came a messenger, and told him, saying, They have brought the heads of the king's sons. And he said, Lay ye them in two heaps at the entering in of the gate until the morning.
10:9	And it came to pass in the morning, that he went out, and stood, and said to all the people, Ye be righteous: behold, I conspired against my master, and slew him: but who slew all these?
10:10	Know now that there shall fall unto the earth nothing of the word of the LORD, which the LORD spake concerning the house of Ahab: for the LORD hath done that which he spake by his servant Elijah.
10:11	So Jehu slew all that remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men, and his kinsfolks, and his priests, until he left him none remaining.
10:12	And he arose and departed, and came to Samaria. And as he was at the shearing house in the way,
10:13	Jehu met with the brethren of Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, Who are ye? And they answered, We are the brethren of Ahaziah; and we go down to salute the children of the king and the children of the queen.
10:14	And he said, Take them alive. And they took them alive, and slew them at the pit of the shearing house, even two and forty men; neither left he any of them.
10:15	And when he was departed thence, he lighted on Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him: and he saluted him, and said to him, Is thine heart right, as my heart is with thy heart? And Jehonadab answered, It is. If it be, give me thine hand. And he gave him his hand; and he took him up to him into the chariot.
10:16	And he said, Come with me, and see my zeal for the LORD. So they made him ride in his chariot.
10:17	And when he came to Samaria, he slew all that remained unto Ahab in Samaria, till he had destroyed him, according to the saying of the LORD, which he spake to Elijah.
10:18	And Jehu gathered all the people together, and said unto them, Ahab served Baal a little; but Jehu shall serve him much.
10:19	Now therefore call unto me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests; let none be wanting: for I have a great sacrifice to do to Baal; whosoever shall be wanting, he shall not live. But Jehu did it in subtilty, to the intent that he might destroy the worshippers of Baal.
10:20	And Jehu said, Proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal. And they proclaimed it.
10:21	And Jehu sent through all Israel: and all the worshippers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left that came not. And they came into the house of Baal; and the house of Baal was full from one end to another.
10:22	And he said unto him that was over the vestry, Bring forth vestments for all the worshippers of Baal. And he brought them forth vestments.
10:23	And Jehu went, and Jehonadab the son of Rechab, into the house of Baal, and said unto the worshippers of Baal, Search, and look that there be here with you none of the servants of the LORD, but the worshippers of Baal only.
10:24	And when they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings, Jehu appointed fourscore men without, and said, If any of the men whom I have brought into your hands escape, he that letteth him go, his life shall be for the life of him.
10:25	And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and slay them; let none come forth. And they smote them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, and went to the city of the house of Baal.
10:26	And they brought forth the images out of the house of Baal, and burned them.
10:27	And they brake down the image of Baal, and brake down the house of Baal, and made it a draught house unto this day.
10:28	Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel.
10:29	Howbeit from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, Jehu departed not from after them, to wit, the golden calves that were in Bethel, and that were in Dan.
10:30	And the LORD said unto Jehu, Because thou hast done well in executing that which is right in mine eyes, and hast done unto the house of Ahab according to all that was in mine heart, thy children of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.
10:31	But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart: for he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin.
10:32	In those days the LORD began to cut Israel short: and Hazael smote them in all the coasts of Israel;
10:33	From Jordan eastward, all the land of Gilead, the Gadites, and the Reubenites, and the Manassites, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, even Gilead and Bashan.
10:34	Now the rest of the acts of Jehu, and all that he did, and all his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
10:35	And Jehu slept with his fathers: and they buried him in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son reigned in his stead.
10:36	And the time that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty and eight years.


10:1	ולאחאב שׁבעים בנים בשׁמרון ויכתב יהוא ספרים וישׁלח שׁמרון אל שׂרי יזרעאל הזקנים ואל האמנים אחאב לאמר׃
10:2	ועתה כבא הספר הזה אליכם ואתכם בני אדניכם ואתכם הרכב והסוסים ועיר מבצר והנשׁק׃
10:3	וראיתם הטוב והישׁר מבני אדניכם ושׂמתם על כסא אביו והלחמו על בית אדניכם׃
10:4	ויראו מאד מאד ויאמרו הנה שׁני המלכים לא עמדו לפניו ואיך נעמד אנחנו׃
10:5	וישׁלח אשׁר על הבית ואשׁר על העיר והזקנים והאמנים אל יהוא לאמר עבדיך אנחנו וכל אשׁר תאמר אלינו נעשׂה לא נמליך אישׁ הטוב בעיניך עשׂה׃
10:6	ויכתב אליהם ספר שׁנית לאמר אם לי אתם ולקלי אתם שׁמעים קחו את ראשׁי אנשׁי בני אדניכם ובאו אלי כעת מחר יזרעאלה ובני המלך שׁבעים אישׁ את גדלי העיר מגדלים אותם׃
10:7	ויהי כבא הספר אליהם ויקחו את בני המלך וישׁחטו שׁבעים אישׁ וישׂימו את ראשׁיהם בדודים וישׁלחו אליו יזרעאלה׃
10:8	ויבא המלאך ויגד לו לאמר הביאו ראשׁי בני המלך ויאמר שׂימו אתם שׁני צברים פתח השׁער עד הבקר׃
10:9	ויהי בבקר ויצא ויעמד ויאמר אל כל העם צדקים אתם הנה אני קשׁרתי על אדני ואהרגהו ומי הכה את כל אלה׃
10:10	דעו אפוא כי לא יפל מדבר יהוה ארצה אשׁר דבר יהוה על בית אחאב ויהוה עשׂה את אשׁר דבר ביד עבדו אליהו׃
10:11	ויך יהוא את כל הנשׁארים לבית אחאב ביזרעאל וכל גדליו ומידעיו וכהניו עד בלתי השׁאיר לו שׂריד׃
10:12	ויקם ויבא וילך שׁמרון הוא בית עקד הרעים בדרך׃
10:13	ויהוא מצא את אחי אחזיהו מלך יהודה ויאמר מי אתם ויאמרו אחי אחזיהו אנחנו ונרד לשׁלום בני המלך ובני הגבירה׃
10:14	ויאמר תפשׂום חיים ויתפשׂום חיים וישׁחטום אל בור בית עקד ארבעים ושׁנים אישׁ ולא השׁאיר אישׁ מהם׃
10:15	וילך משׁם וימצא את יהונדב בן רכב לקראתו ויברכהו ויאמר אליו הישׁ את לבבך ישׁר כאשׁר לבבי עם לבבך ויאמר יהונדב ישׁ וישׁ תנה את ידך ויתן ידו ויעלהו אליו אל המרכבה׃
10:16	ויאמר לכה אתי וראה בקנאתי ליהוה וירכבו אתו ברכבו׃
10:17	ויבא שׁמרון ויך את כל הנשׁארים לאחאב בשׁמרון עד השׁמידו כדבר יהוה אשׁר דבר אל אליהו׃
10:18	ויקבץ יהוא את כל העם ויאמר אלהם אחאב עבד את הבעל מעט יהוא יעבדנו הרבה׃
10:19	ועתה כל נביאי הבעל כל עבדיו וכל כהניו קראו אלי אישׁ אל יפקד כי זבח גדול לי לבעל כל אשׁר יפקד לא יחיה ויהוא עשׂה בעקבה למען האביד את עבדי הבעל׃
10:20	ויאמר יהוא קדשׁו עצרה לבעל ויקראו׃
10:21	וישׁלח יהוא בכל ישׂראל ויבאו כל עבדי הבעל ולא נשׁאר אישׁ אשׁר לא בא ויבאו בית הבעל וימלא בית הבעל פה לפה׃
10:22	ויאמר לאשׁר על המלתחה הוצא לבושׁ לכל עבדי הבעל ויצא להם המלבושׁ׃
10:23	ויבא יהוא ויהונדב בן רכב בית הבעל ויאמר לעבדי הבעל חפשׂו וראו פן ישׁ פה עמכם מעבדי יהוה כי אם עבדי הבעל לבדם׃
10:24	ויבאו לעשׂות זבחים ועלות ויהוא שׂם לו בחוץ שׁמנים אישׁ ויאמר האישׁ אשׁר ימלט מן האנשׁים אשׁר אני מביא על ידיכם נפשׁו תחת נפשׁו׃
10:25	ויהי ככלתו לעשׂות העלה ויאמר יהוא לרצים ולשׁלשׁים באו הכום אישׁ אל יצא ויכום לפי חרב וישׁלכו הרצים והשׁלשׁים וילכו עד עיר בית הבעל׃
10:26	ויצאו את מצבות בית הבעל וישׂרפוה׃
10:27	ויתצו את מצבת הבעל ויתצו את בית הבעל וישׂמהו למחראות עד היום׃
10:28	וישׁמד יהוא את הבעל מישׂראל׃
10:29	רק חטאי ירבעם בן נבט אשׁר החטיא את ישׂראל לא סר יהוא מאחריהם עגלי הזהב אשׁר בית אל ואשׁר בדן׃
10:30	ויאמר יהוה אל יהוא יען אשׁר הטיבת לעשׂות הישׁר בעיני ככל אשׁר בלבבי עשׂית לבית אחאב בני רבעים ישׁבו לך על כסא ישׂראל׃
10:31	ויהוא לא שׁמר ללכת בתורת יהוה אלהי ישׂראל בכל לבבו לא סר מעל חטאות ירבעם אשׁר החטיא את ישׂראל׃
10:32	בימים ההם החל יהוה לקצות בישׂראל ויכם חזאל בכל גבול ישׂראל׃
10:33	מן הירדן מזרח השׁמשׁ את כל ארץ הגלעד הגדי והראובני והמנשׁי מערער אשׁר על נחל ארנן והגלעד והבשׁן׃
10:34	ויתר דברי יהוא וכל אשׁר עשׂה וכל גבורתו הלוא הם כתובים על ספר דברי הימים למלכי ישׂראל׃
10:35	וישׁכב יהוא עם אבתיו ויקברו אתו בשׁמרון וימלך יהואחז בנו תחתיו׃
10:36	והימים אשׁר מלך יהוא על ישׂראל עשׂרים ושׁמנה שׁנה בשׁמרון׃


10:1	And Ahab hath seventy sons in Samaria, and Jehu writeth letters, and sendeth to Samaria, unto the heads of Jezreel, the elders, and unto the supporters of Ahab, saying,
10:2	`And now, at the coming in of this letter unto you, and with you `are' sons of your lord, and with you `are' the chariots and the horses, and a fenced city, and the armour,
10:3	and ye have seen the best and the uprightest of the sons of your lord, and have set `him' on the throne of his father, and fight ye for the house of your lord.'
10:4	And they fear very greatly, and say, `Lo, the two kings have not stood before him, and how do we stand -- we?'
10:5	And he who `is' over the house, and he who `is' over the city, and the elders, and the supporters, send unto Jehu, saying, `Thy servants we `are', and all that thou sayest unto us we do; we do not make any one king -- that which `is' good in thine eyes do.'
10:6	And he writeth unto them a letter a second time, saying, `If ye `are' for me, and to my voice are hearkening, take the heads of the men -- the sons of your lord, and come unto me about this time to-morrow, to Jezreel;' and the sons of the king `are' seventy men, with the great ones of the city those bringing them up.
10:7	And it cometh to pass, at the coming in of the letter unto them, that they take the sons of the king, and slaughter seventy men, and put their heads in baskets, and send unto him to Jezreel,
10:8	and the messenger cometh in, and declareth to him, saying, `They have brought in the heads of the sons of the king,' and he saith, `Make them two heaps at the opening of the gate till the morning.'
10:9	And it cometh to pass in the morning, that he goeth out, and standeth, and saith unto all the people, `Righteous are ye; lo, I have conspired against my lord, and slay him -- and who smote all these?
10:10	Know ye now, that nothing doth fall of the word of Jehovah to the earth that Jehovah spake against the house of Ahab, and Jehovah hath done that which He spake by the hand of His servant Elijah.'
10:11	And Jehu smiteth all those left to the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men, and his acquaintances, and his priests, till he hath not left to him a remnant.
10:12	And he riseth, and cometh in and goeth to Samaria; he `is' at the shepherds' shearing-house in the way,
10:13	and Jehu hath found the brethren of Ahaziah king of Judah, and saith, `Who `are' ye?' and they say, `Brethren of Ahaziah we `are', and we go down to salute the sons of the king, and the sons of the mistress.'
10:14	And he saith, `Catch them alive;' and they catch them alive, and slaughter them at the pit of the shearing-house, forty and two men, and he hath not left a man of them.
10:15	And he goeth thence, and findeth Jehonadab son of Rechab -- to meet him, and blesseth him, and saith unto him, `Is thy heart right, as my heart `is' with thy heart?' and Jehonadab saith, `It is;' -- `Then it is; give thy hand;' and he giveth his hand, and he causeth him to come up into him into the chariot,
10:16	and saith, `Come with me, and look on my zeal for Jehovah;' and they cause him to ride in his chariot.
10:17	And he cometh in to Samaria, and smiteth all those left to Ahab in Samaria, till his destroying him, according to the word of Jehovah that He spake unto Elisha.
10:18	And Jehu gathereth the whole of the people, and saith unto them, `Ahab served Baal a little -- Jehu doth serve him much:
10:19	and now, all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests, call ye unto me; let not a man be lacking, for a great sacrifice I have for Baal; every one who is lacking -- he doth not live;' and Jehu hath done `it' in subtilty, in order to destroy the servants of Baal.
10:20	And Jehu saith, `Sanctify a restraint for Baal;' and they proclaim `it'.
10:21	And Jehu sendeth into all Israel, and all the servants of Baal come in, and there hath not been left a man who hath not come in; and they come in to the house of Baal, and the house of Baal is full -- mouth to mouth.
10:22	And he saith to him who `is' over the wardrobe, `Bring out clothing to all servants of Baal;' and he bringeth out to them the clothing.
10:23	And Jehu goeth in, and Jehonadab son of Rechab, to the house of Baal, and saith to the servants of Baal, `Search and see, lest there be here with you of the servants of Jehovah -- but, the servants of Baal by themselves.'
10:24	And they come in to make sacrifices and burnt-offerings, and Jehu hath set for himself in an out-place eighty men, and saith, `The man who letteth escape `any' of the men whom I am bringing in unto your hand -- his soul for his soul.'
10:25	And it cometh to pass at his finishing to make the burnt-offering, that Jehu saith to the runners, and to the captains, `Go in, smite them, let none come out;' and they smite them by the mouth of the sword, and the runners and the captains cast `them' out; and they go unto the city, to the house of Baal,
10:26	and bring out the standing-pillars of the house of Baal, and burn them,
10:27	and break down the standing-pillar of Baal, and break down the house of Baal, and appoint it for a draught-house unto this day.
10:28	And Jehu destroyeth Baal out of Israel,
10:29	only -- the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, that he caused Israel to sin, Jehu hath not turned aside from after them -- the calves of gold that `are' at Beth-El, and in Dan.
10:30	And Jehovah saith unto Jehu, `Because that thou hast done well, to do that which `is' right in Mine eyes -- according to all that `is' in My heart thou hast done to the house of Ahab -- the sons of the fourth `generation' do sit for thee on the throne of Israel.'
10:31	And Jehu hath not taken heed to walk in the law of Jehovah, God of Israel, with all his heart, he hath not turned aside from the sins of Jeroboam, that he caused Israel to sin.
10:32	In those days hath Jehovah begun to cut off `some' in Israel, and Hazael smiteth them in all the border of Israel,
10:33	from the Jordan, at the sun-rising, the whole land of Gilead, of the Gadite, and the Reubenite, and the Manassahite (from Aroer, that `is' by the brook Arnon), even Gilead and Bashan.
10:34	And the rest of the matters of Jehu, and all that he did, and all his might, are they not written on the book of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel?
10:35	And Jehu lieth with his fathers, and they bury him in Samaria, and reign doth Jehoahaz his son in his stead.
10:36	And the days that Jehu hath reigned over Israel `are' twenty and eight years, in Samaria.
