| 17:1 | In the twelfth yeere of Ahaz, king of Iudah, began Hoshea the sonne of Elah to reigne in Samaria, ouer Israel nine yeeres. |
| 17:2 | And hee did that which was euill in the sight of the Lord, but not as the kings of Israel that were before him. |
| 17:3 | Against him came vp Shalmaneser king of Assyria, and Hoshea became his seruant, and gaue him presents. |
| 17:4 | An the king of Assyria found conspiracie in Hoshea: for hee had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and brought no present to the king of Assyria, as he had done yeere by yeere: therefore the king of Assyria shut him vp, and bound him in prison. |
| 17:5 | Then the king of Assyria came vp thorowout all the land, and went vp to Samaria, and besieged it three yeres. |
| 17:6 | In the ninth yeere of Hoshea, the king of Assyria tooke Samaria, and caried Israel away into Assyria, and placed them in Halah, and in Habor by the riuer of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes. |
| 17:7 | For so it was, that the children of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, which had brought them vp out of the land of Egypt, from vnder the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods, |
| 17:8 | And walked in the statutes of the heathen, (whom the Lord cast out from before the children of Israel) and of the kings of Israel, which they had made. |
| 17:9 | And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right, against the Lord their God: and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen, to the fenced city. |
| 17:10 | And they set them vp images, and groues in euery high hill, and vnder euery greene tree. |
| 17:11 | And there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the heathen whom the Lord caried away before them, and wrought wicked things to prouoke the Lord to anger. |
| 17:12 | For they serued idoles, whereof the Lord had said vnto them, Yee shall not doe this thing. |
| 17:13 | Yet the Lord testified against Israel, and against Iudah, by all the Prophets, and by all the Seers, saying, Turne ye from your euill wayes, and keepe my commandements, and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my seruants the Prophets. |
| 17:14 | Notwithstanding, they would not heare, but hardened their neckes, like to the necke of their fathers, that did not beleeue in the Lord their God. |
| 17:15 | And they reiected his Statutes, and his Couenant that hee made with their fathers, and his Testimonies which he testified against them, and they followed vanitie, and became vaine, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the Lord had charged them, that they should not doe like them. |
| 17:16 | And they left all the Commandements of the Lord their God, and made them molten images, euen two calues, and made a groue, and worshipped all the hoste of heauen, and serued Baal. |
| 17:17 | And they caused their sonnes and their daughters to passe through the fire, and vsed diuination, and inchantments, and sold themselues to doe euill in the sight of the Lord, to prouoke him to anger. |
| 17:18 | Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel, and remoued them out of his sight, there was none left, but the tribe of Iudah onely. |
| 17:19 | Also Iudah kept not the Commandements of the Lord their God, but walked in the Statutes of Israel which they made. |
| 17:20 | And the Lord reiected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and deliuered them into the hand of spoilers, vntill he had cast them out of his sight. |
| 17:21 | For he rent Israel from the house of Dauid, and they made Ieroboam the sonne of Nebat king, and Ieroboam draue Israel from following the Lord, and made them sinne a great sinne. |
| 17:22 | For the children of Israel walked in al the sinnes of Ieroboam which he did, they departed not from them: |
| 17:23 | Untill the Lord remoued Israel out of his sight, as hee had said by all his seruants the Prophets: so was Israel caried away out of their owne land to Assyria, vnto this day. |
| 17:24 | And the King of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Aua, and from Hamath, and from Sepharuaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria, in stead of the children of Israel; and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities thereof. |
| 17:25 | And so it was at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they feared not the Lord; therefore the Lord sent Lions among them, which slew some of them. |
| 17:26 | Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou hast remoued, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the maner of the God of the land: therfore he hath sent Lions among them, and beholde, they slay them, because they know not the maner of the God of the land. |
| 17:27 | Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carie thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence, and let them goe and dwell there, and let him teach them the maner of the God of the land. |
| 17:28 | Then one of the priests whom they had caried away from Samaria, came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them howe they should feare the Lord. |
| 17:29 | Howbeit, euery nation made gods of their owne, and put them in the houses of the high places which the Samaritanes had made, euery nation in their cities wherein they dwelt: |
| 17:30 | And the men of Babylon made Succoth-Benoth, and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima: |
| 17:31 | And the Auites made Nibhaz and Tartak; and the Sepharuites burnt their children in fire to Adrammelech, and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharuaim. |
| 17:32 | So they feared the Lord, and made vnto themselues of the lowest of them priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places. |
| 17:33 | They feared the Lord, and serued their owne gods, after the maner of the nations whom they caried away from thence. |
| 17:34 | Unto this day they doe after the former maners: they feare not the Lord, neither doe they after their Statutes, or after their Ordinances, or after the Law and Commaundement which the Lord commaunded the children of Iacob, whom hee named Israel, |
| 17:35 | With whom the Lord had made a Couenant, and charged them, saying, Yee shall not feare other gods, nor bow your selues to them, nor serue them, nor sacrifice to them: |
| 17:36 | But the Lord, who brought you vp out of the land of Egypt, with great power, and a stretched out arme, him shall ye feare, and him shall ye worship, and to him shall ye doe sacrifice. |
| 17:37 | And the Statutes, and the Ordinances, and the Law, and the Commandement which he wrote for you, ye shall obserue to doe for euermore, and ye shall not feare other gods: |
| 17:38 | And the Couenant that I haue made with you, ye shall no forget, neither shall ye feare other gods. |
| 17:39 | But the Lord your God yee shall feare, and he shall deliuer you out of the hand of all your enemies. |
| 17:40 | Howbeit, they did not hearken, but they did after their former maner. |
| 17:41 | So these nations feared the Lord, and serued their grauen images, both their children, and their childrens children: as did their fathers, so doe they vnto this day. |
| 17:1 | In the twelft yeere of Ahaz King of Iudah began Hoshea the sonne of Elah to reigne in Samaria ouer Israel, and reigned nine yeeres. |
| 17:2 | And he did euill in the sight of the Lord, but not as the Kinges of Israel, that were before him. |
| 17:3 | And Shalmaneser king of Asshur came vp against him, and Hoshea became his seruant, and gaue him presents. |
| 17:4 | And the King of Asshur founde treason in Hoshea: for he had sent messengers to So King of Egypt, and brought no present vnto the King of Asshur, as he had done yeerely: therfore the king of Asshur shut him vp, and put him in prison. |
| 17:5 | Then the king of Asshur came vp throughout all the lande, and went against Samaria, and besieged it three yeere. |
| 17:6 | In the ninth yeere of Hoshea, the King of Asshur tooke Samaria, and caryed Israel away vnto Asshur, and put them in Halah, and in Habor by the riuer of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes. |
| 17:7 | For when the children of Israel sinned against the Lord their God, which had brought them out of the land of Egypt, from vnder ye hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and feared other gods, |
| 17:8 | And walked according to the facions of the Heathen, whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel, and after the maners of the Kings of Israel, which they vsed, |
| 17:9 | And the children of Israel had done secretly things that were not vpright before the Lord their God, and throughout all their cities had built hie places, both from the tower of the watch, to the defensed citie, |
| 17:10 | And had made them images and groues vpon euery hie hill, and vnder euery greene tree, |
| 17:11 | And there burnt incense in all the hie places, as did the heathen, whom the Lord had taken away before them, and wrought wicked things to anger the Lord, |
| 17:12 | And serued idoles: whereof the Lord had sayd vnto them, Ye shall do no such thing, |
| 17:13 | Notwithstanding the Lord testified to Israel, and to Iudah by all the Prophets, and by all the Seers, saying, Turne from your euill wayes, and keepe my commandements and my statutes, according to all the Lawe, which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my seruants the Prophets. |
| 17:14 | Neuerthelesse they would not obey, but hardened their neckes, like to the neckes of their fathers, that did not beleeue in the Lord their God. |
| 17:15 | And they refused his statutes and his couenant, that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies (wherewith he witnessed vnto them) and they followed vanitie, and became vaine, and followed the heathen that were round about them: concerning whome the Lord had charged them, that they should not do like them. |
| 17:16 | Finally they left all the commandements of the Lord their God, and made them molten images, euen two calues, and made a groue, and worshipped all the hoste of heauen, and serued Baal. |
| 17:17 | And they made their sonnes and their daughters passe thorowe the fire, and vsed witchcraft and inchantments, yea, solde them selues to doe euill in the sight of the Lord, to anger him. |
| 17:18 | Therefore the Lord was exceeding wroth with Israel, and put them out of his sight, and none was left but the tribe of Iudah onely. |
| 17:19 | Yet Iudah kept not the commandements of the Lord their God, but walked according to the facion of Israel, which they vsed. |
| 17:20 | Therefore the Lord cast off all the seede of Israel, and afflicted them, and deliuered them into the handes of spoylers, vntill he had cast them out of his sight. |
| 17:21 | For he cut off Israel from the house of Dauid, and they made Ieroboam the sonne of Nebat King: and Ieroboam drewe Israel away from following the Lord, and made them sinne a great sinne. |
| 17:22 | For the children of Israel walked in all the sinnes of Ieroboam, which he did, and departed not therefrom, |
| 17:23 | Vntill the Lord put Israel away out of his sight, as he had said by all his seruants the Prophets, and caryed Israel away out of their land to Asshur vnto this day. |
| 17:24 | And the King of Asshur brought folke from Babel, and from Cuthah, and from Aua, and from Hamath, and from Sepharuaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria in steade of the children of Israel: so they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities thereof. |
| 17:25 | And at the beginning of their dwelling there, they feared not the Lord: therefore the Lord sent lions among them, which slewe them. |
| 17:26 | Wherefore they spake to the King of Asshur, saying, The nations which thou hast remoued, and placed in the cities of Samaria, knowe not the maner of the God of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and behold, they slay them, because they knowe not the maner of the God of the land. |
| 17:27 | Then the King of Asshur commanded, saying, Carie thither one of the Priestes whome ye brought thence, and let him goe and dwell there, and teache them the maner of the God of the countrey. |
| 17:28 | So one of the Priestes, which they had caryed from Samaria, came and dwelt in Beth-el, and taught them how they shoulde feare the Lord. |
| 17:29 | Howbeit euery nation made their gods, and put them in the houses of the hie places, which the Samaritanes had made, euery nation in their cities, wherein they dwelt. |
| 17:30 | For the men of Babel made Succoth-Benoth: and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima, |
| 17:31 | And the Auims made Nibhaz, and Tartak: and the Sepharuims burnt their children in the fire to Adrammelech, and Anammelech the gods of Sepharuaim. |
| 17:32 | Thus they feared the Lord, and appoynted out Priestes out of them selues for the hie places, who prepared for them sacrifices in the houses of the hie places. |
| 17:33 | They feared the Lord, but serued their gods after the maner of the nations whome they caryed thence. |
| 17:34 | Vnto this day they doe after the olde maner: they neyther feare God, neyther doe after their ordinances, nor after their customes, nor after the Lawe, nor after the commandement, which the Lord commanded the children of Iaakob, whom he named Israel, |
| 17:35 | And with whom the Lord had made a couenant, and charged them, saying, Feare none other gods, nor bowe your selues to them, nor serue them, nor sacrifice to them: |
| 17:36 | But feare the Lord which brought you out of the land of Egypt with great power, and a stretched out arme: him feare ye, and worshippe him, and sacrifice to him. |
| 17:37 | Also keepe ye diligently the statutes and the ordinances, and the Lawe, and the commandement, which he wrote for you, that ye do them continually, and feare not other gods. |
| 17:38 | And forget not the couenant that I haue made with you, neither feare ye other gods, |
| 17:39 | But feare the Lord your God, and he will deliuer you out of the handes of all your enemies. |
| 17:40 | Howbeit they obeyed not, but did after their olde custome. |
| 17:41 | So these nations feared the Lord, and serued their images also: so did their children, and their childrens children: as did their fathers, so do they vnto this day. |
| 17:1 | In the .xii. yeare of Ahaz kynge of Iuda, beganne Hosea the sonne of Ela to raigne in Samaria vpon Israel .ix. yeare, |
| 17:2 | and dyd that which was euell in the syght of the Lorde, but not as the kynges of Israel that were before him. |
| 17:3 | And Salmanasar kyng of Assyria came vp agaynst him, and Hosea became hys seruaunt, and gaue hym presentes. |
| 17:4 | And the kynge of Assyria founde treason in Hosea: for he had sent messengers to So, kynge of Egypte, and brought no presente vnto the kynge of Assyria, from yeare to yeare: and therfore the kynge of Assyria toke hym: and put hym in pryson. |
| 17:5 | And then the kynge of Assyria came vp thorowout all the lande, & gat vp against Samaria, and beseged it thre yeare. |
| 17:6 | In the nynth yeare of Hosea, the kynge of Assyria toke Samaria, and caryed Israel awaye vnto Assyria, and put them in Hala, in Habor by the ryuer of Goza, and in the cyties of the Medes. |
| 17:7 | For it came to passe, that the chyldren of Israel synned agaynst the Lorde theyr God, which had brought them out of the lande of Egypt, from vnder the hande of Pharao kynge of Egypte: and feared other Gods. |
| 17:8 | And they walked in the ceremonyes of the hethen, whom the Lorde cast out before the chyldren of Israel, & in the ceremonies which the kynges of Israel had made. |
| 17:9 | And the children of Israel went about to hyde those thinges that were not well, from the Lorde theyr God. And they buylt them Hyllaulters in all theyr cyties, bothe in the towres where they kept watch, and also in the stronge townes. |
| 17:10 | And they made them ymages and groues in euery hye hyll, and vnder euery thyck tre. |
| 17:11 | And there they burnt incense in all the Hyllaulters, as dyd the hethen (whom the Lorde caryed awaye before them) and wrought wycked thynges to angre the Lorde withall: |
| 17:12 | For they serued most vyle Idoles, wherof the Lorde had sayde vnto them. Ye shall do no soche thynge. |
| 17:13 | And the Lorde testifyed in Israel, and in Iuda by all the prophetes and by all the sears, sayinge. Turne from youre wycked wayes and kepe my commaundementes and my statutes, accordinge to all the lawe which I commaunded youre fathers, and which I sent to you by my seruauntes the prophetes. |
| 17:14 | Notwithstandynge they wolde not heare but rather hardened theyr neckes, lyke to the stubburnesse of their fathers that dyd not beleue in the Lorde their God. |
| 17:15 | For they refused hys statutes, and hys appoyntment that he made with theyr fathers, & the witnesses (wherwith he witnessed vnto them) & they folowed vanyte, and became vayne, and went after the hethen that were rounde aboute them: concernynge whom, the Lorde had charged them, that they shuld not do lyke them. |
| 17:16 | But they left the commaundementes of the Lord theyr God and made them Images of metall euen two calues: and made Idole groues, & worshypped all the Hoste of heauen, and serued Baall. |
| 17:17 | And they sacrifyced theyr sonnes & theyr daughters in fyre, and vsed witchcraft and enchauntementes euen sellynge them selues to worke wyckednesse in the syght of the Lorde, and to angre hym. |
| 17:18 | And the Lorde was exceadinge wroth wt Israel and put them out of hys syght that there was lefte but the trybe of Iuda onely. |
| 17:19 | Neuertheles, Iuda also kept not the commaundementes of the Lorde theyr God, but walked in the ceremonies of Israel, which they made |
| 17:20 | And the Lorde cast vp all the seed of Israel, and vexed them, and delyuered them into the handes of spoylers, vntyll he had cast them out of hys syght. |
| 17:21 | For Israel deuyded them selues from the house of Dauid, & made them a kinge, euen Ieroboam the sonne of Nebat. And Ieroboam drewe Israel awaye (that they shulde not folowe the Lorde) and made them synne a greate synne: |
| 17:22 | For the chyldren of Israel walcked in all the synnes of Ieroboam which he dyd, and departed not therfrom, |
| 17:23 | vntyll the Lorde put Israel awaye out of hys syght, as he had sayde by all hys seruauntes the prophetes. And so was Israel caryed awaye out of theyr awne lande to Assyria euen vnto thys daye. |
| 17:24 | And the kynge of Assyria brought men from Babylon, from Cutha, from Aua, from Hanath, and from Sepharuaim, and put them in the cyties of Samaria, in steade of the chyldren of Israel. And they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cyties therof. |
| 17:25 | And it fortuned, that at the begynnynge of theyr dwellinge there, they feared not the Lorde. And the Lorde sent lyons amonge them, which slue them. |
| 17:26 | Wherfore, men sayde to the kynge of Assyria. The nacyons which thou hast translated, & put in the cyties of Samaria, knowe not the lawe of the God of the lande, therfore he hath sent lyons vpon them: and beholde they slaye them, because they knowe not the maner of worshyppyng of the God of the lande. |
| 17:27 | Then the kynge of Assyria commaunded sayenge: carye thether one or twayne of the Preastes, whom ye brought thence, and let them go, and dwell there, and teache them the fassyon howe to serue the God of the contreye. |
| 17:28 | And then one of the Preastes which they had caryed thence came, and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them howe they shulde feare the Lorde. |
| 17:29 | Howbeit euery nacyon made them Gods of theyr awne and put them in the houses of the Hyllaulters which the Samaritans had made, euery nacion in their cyties wherin they dwelt. |
| 17:30 | The men of Babilon made Socoth Benoth: and the men of Cuth made Nergal: and the men of Hamath made Asima. |
| 17:31 | The Auites made Nibbaz, and Tharthak. And the Sepharuites burnt theyr chyldren in fyre for Adramelech and Anamelech, the Gods of Sepharuaim. |
| 17:32 | And so they feared the Lorde, and made them Preastes of the Hyllaulters, which sacrifyced for them in the houses of the Hyllaulters. |
| 17:33 | And so they feared the Lorde, and serued theyr awne Gods after the maner of the people, whom they caryed thence. |
| 17:34 | And vnto this daye they do after the olde maner: and nether feare God, nether do after theyr ordinaunces and customes, and after the lawe and commaundement which the Lorde commaunded the chyldren of Iacob, whom he called Israel. |
| 17:35 | And the Lorde made an appoyntement wyth them, and charged them, sayenge: feare none other Goddes, nor bowe youre selues to them, nor serue them nor sacrifyce to them: |
| 17:36 | but feare the Lord which brought you out of the lande of Egypte with greate power and a stretched out arme: hym feare, and to hym bowe, and to hym do sacrifyce. |
| 17:37 | The statutes, ordinaunces, lawe and commaundement which he wrote for you, se that ye be diligent to do for euermore, & feare not any other goddes. |
| 17:38 | And the appoyntement that I haue made with you, se ye forget not and feare none other goddes: |
| 17:39 | but the Lorde youre God ye shall feare, and he shall deliuer you out of the handes of all youre enemyes. |
| 17:40 | Howbeit, they dyd not herken, but dyd after theyr olde custome. |
| 17:41 | And so these nacions feared the Lorde, and serued theyr ymages also: lyke as dyd theyr chyldren and theyr chyldrens chyldren. Euen as dyd theyr fathers, so do they vnto thys daye. |
