2 Chronicles - Chapter: 20


20:1	It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle.
20:2	Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazontamar, which is Engedi.
20:3	And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.
20:4	And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the LORD: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD.
20:5	And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court,
20:6	And said, O LORD God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee?
20:7	Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever?
20:8	And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying,
20:9	If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, then thou wilt hear and help.
20:10	And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not;
20:11	Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit.
20:12	O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.
20:13	And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.
20:14	Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation;
20:15	And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.
20:16	To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel.
20:17	Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the LORD will be with you.
20:18	And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD, worshipping the LORD.
20:19	And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high.
20:20	And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
20:21	And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.
20:22	And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.
20:23	For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.
20:24	And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped.
20:25	And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much.
20:26	And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Berachah; for there they blessed the LORD: therefore the name of the same place was called, The valley of Berachah, unto this day.
20:27	Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for the LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies.
20:28	And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the LORD.
20:29	And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries, when they had heard that the LORD fought against the enemies of Israel.
20:30	So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet: for his God gave him rest round about.
20:31	And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi.
20:32	And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and departed not from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD.
20:33	Howbeit the high places were not taken away: for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers.
20:34	Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Jehu the son of Hanani, who is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel.
20:35	And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly:
20:36	And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish: and they made the ships in Eziongeber.
20:37	Then Eliezer the son of Dodavah of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, the LORD hath broken thy works. And the ships were broken, that they were not able to go to Tarshish.


20:1	ויהי אחריכן באו בני מואב ובני עמון ועמהם מהעמונים על יהושׁפט למלחמה׃
20:2	ויבאו ויגידו ליהושׁפט לאמר בא עליך המון רב מעבר לים מארם והנם בחצצון תמר היא עין גדי׃
20:3	וירא ויתן יהושׁפט את פניו לדרושׁ ליהוה ויקרא צום על כל יהודה׃
20:4	ויקבצו יהודה לבקשׁ מיהוה גם מכל ערי יהודה באו לבקשׁ את יהוה׃
20:5	ויעמד יהושׁפט בקהל יהודה וירושׁלם בבית יהוה לפני החצר החדשׁה׃
20:6	ויאמר יהוה אלהי אבתינו הלא אתה הוא אלהים בשׁמים ואתה מושׁל בכל ממלכות הגוים ובידך כח וגבורה ואין עמך להתיצב׃
20:7	הלא אתה אלהינו הורשׁת את ישׁבי הארץ הזאת מלפני עמך ישׂראל ותתנה לזרע אברהם אהבך לעולם׃
20:8	וישׁבו בה ויבנו לך בה מקדשׁ לשׁמך לאמר׃
20:9	אם תבוא עלינו רעה חרב שׁפוט ודבר ורעב נעמדה לפני הבית הזה ולפניך כי שׁמך בבית הזה ונזעק אליך מצרתנו ותשׁמע ותושׁיע׃
20:10	ועתה הנה בני עמון ומואב והר שׂעיר אשׁר לא נתתה לישׂראל לבוא בהם בבאם מארץ מצרים כי סרו מעליהם ולא השׁמידום׃
20:11	והנה הם גמלים עלינו לבוא לגרשׁנו מירשׁתך אשׁר הורשׁתנו׃
20:12	אלהינו הלא תשׁפט בם כי אין בנו כח לפני ההמון הרב הזה הבא עלינו ואנחנו לא נדע מה נעשׂה כי עליך עינינו׃
20:13	וכל יהודה עמדים לפני יהוה גם טפם נשׁיהם ובניהם׃
20:14	ויחזיאל בן זכריהו בן בניה בן יעיאל בן מתניה הלוי מן בני אסף היתה עליו רוח יהוה בתוך הקהל׃
20:15	ויאמר הקשׁיבו כל יהודה וישׁבי ירושׁלם והמלך יהושׁפט כה אמר יהוה לכם אתם אל תיראו ואל תחתו מפני ההמון הרב הזה כי לא לכם המלחמה כי לאלהים׃
20:16	מחר רדו עליהם הנם עלים במעלה הציץ ומצאתם אתם בסוף הנחל פני מדבר ירואל׃
20:17	לא לכם להלחם בזאת התיצבו עמדו וראו את ישׁועת יהוה עמכם יהודה וירושׁלם אל תיראו ואל תחתו מחר צאו לפניהם ויהוה עמכם׃
20:18	ויקד יהושׁפט אפים ארצה וכל יהודה וישׁבי ירושׁלם נפלו לפני יהוה להשׁתחות ליהוה׃
20:19	ויקמו הלוים מן בני הקהתים ומן בני הקרחים להלל ליהוה אלהי ישׂראל בקול גדול למעלה׃
20:20	וישׁכימו בבקר ויצאו למדבר תקוע ובצאתם עמד יהושׁפט ויאמר שׁמעוני יהודה וישׁבי ירושׁלם האמינו ביהוה אלהיכם ותאמנו האמינו בנביאיו והצליחו׃
20:21	ויועץ אל העם ויעמד משׁררים ליהוה ומהללים להדרת קדשׁ בצאת לפני החלוץ ואמרים הודו ליהוה כי לעולם חסדו׃
20:22	ובעת החלו ברנה ותהלה נתן יהוה מארבים על בני עמון מואב והר שׂעיר הבאים ליהודה וינגפו׃
20:23	ויעמדו בני עמון ומואב על ישׁבי הר שׂעיר להחרים ולהשׁמיד וככלותם ביושׁבי שׂעיר עזרו אישׁ ברעהו למשׁחית׃
20:24	ויהודה בא על המצפה למדבר ויפנו אל ההמון והנם פגרים נפלים ארצה ואין פליטה׃
20:25	ויבא יהושׁפט ועמו לבז את שׁללם וימצאו בהם לרב ורכושׁ ופגרים וכלי חמדות וינצלו להם לאין משׂא ויהיו ימים שׁלושׁה בזזים את השׁלל כי רב הוא׃
20:26	וביום הרבעי נקהלו לעמק ברכה כי שׁם ברכו את יהוה על כן קראו את שׁם המקום ההוא עמק ברכה עד היום׃
20:27	וישׁבו כל אישׁ יהודה וירושׁלם ויהושׁפט בראשׁם לשׁוב אל ירושׁלם בשׂמחה כי שׂמחם יהוה מאויביהם׃
20:28	ויבאו ירושׁלם בנבלים ובכנרות ובחצצרות אל בית יהוה׃
20:29	ויהי פחד אלהים על כל ממלכות הארצות בשׁמעם כי נלחם יהוה עם אויבי ישׂראל׃
20:30	ותשׁקט מלכות יהושׁפט וינח לו אלהיו מסביב׃
20:31	וימלך יהושׁפט על יהודה בן שׁלשׁים וחמשׁ שׁנה במלכו ועשׂרים וחמשׁ שׁנה מלך בירושׁלם ושׁם אמו עזובה בת שׁלחי׃
20:32	וילך בדרך אביו אסא ולא סר ממנה לעשׂות הישׁר בעיני יהוה׃
20:33	אך הבמות לא סרו ועוד העם לא הכינו לבבם לאלהי אבתיהם׃
20:34	ויתר דברי יהושׁפט הראשׁנים והאחרנים הנם כתובים בדברי יהוא בן חנני אשׁר העלה על ספר מלכי ישׂראל׃
20:35	ואחריכן אתחבר יהושׁפט מלך יהודה עם אחזיה מלך ישׂראל הוא הרשׁיע לעשׂות׃
20:36	ויחברהו עמו לעשׂות אניות ללכת תרשׁישׁ ויעשׂו אניות בעציון גבר׃
20:37	ויתנבא אליעזר בן דדוהו ממרשׁה על יהושׁפט לאמר כהתחברך עם אחזיהו פרץ יהוה את מעשׂיך וישׁברו אניות ולא עצרו ללכת אל תרשׁישׁ׃


20:1	And it cometh to pass after this, the sons of Moab have come in, and the sons of Ammon, and with them of the peoples, against Jehoshaphat to battle.
20:2	And they come in and declare to Jehoshaphat, saying, `Come against thee hath a great multitude from beyond the sea, from Aram, and lo, they `are' in Hazezon-Tamar -- it `is' En-Gedi.'
20:3	And Jehoshaphat feareth, and setteth his face to seek to Jehovah, and proclaimeth a fast over all Judah;
20:4	and Judah is gathered to inquire of Jehovah; also, from all the cities of Judah they have come in to seek Jehovah.
20:5	And Jehoshaphat standeth in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of Jehovah, at the front of the new court,
20:6	and saith, `O Jehovah, God of our fathers, art not Thou -- God in the heavens? yea, Thou art ruling over all kingdoms of the nations, and in Thy hand `is' power and might, and there is none with Thee to station himself.
20:7	`Art not Thou our God? Thou hast dispossessed the inhabitants of this land from before Thy people Israel, and dost give it to the seed of Abraham Thy friend to the age,
20:8	and they dwell in it, and build to Thee in it a sanctuary for Thy name, saying,
20:9	If evil doth come upon us -- sword, judgment, and pestilence, and famine -- we stand before this house, and before Thee, for Thy name `is' in this house, and cry unto Thee out of our distress, and Thou dost hear and save.
20:10	`And now, lo, sons of Ammon, and Moab, and mount Seir, whom Thou didst not grant to Israel to go in against in their coming out of the land of Egypt, for they turned aside from off them and destroyed them not,
20:11	and lo, they are recompensing to us -- to come in to drive us out of Thy possession, that Thou hast caused us to possess.
20:12	`O our God, dost Thou not execute judgment upon them? for there is no power in us before this great multitude that hath come against us, and we know not what we do, but on Thee `are' our eyes.'
20:13	And all Judah are standing before Jehovah, also their infants, their wives, and their sons.
20:14	And upon Jahaziel, son of Zechariah, son of Benaiah, son of Jeiel, son of Mattaniah, the Levite, of the sons of Asaph, hath the Spirit of Jehovah been, in the midst of the assembly,
20:15	and he saith, `Attend, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and O king Jehoshaphat, Thus said Jehovah to you, Ye fear not, nor are afraid of the face of this great multitude, for not for you `is' the battle, but for God.
20:16	To-morrow, go ye down against them, lo, they are coming up by the ascent of Ziz, and ye have found them in the end of the valley, the front of the wilderness of Jeruel.
20:17	Not for you to fight in this; station yourselves, stand, and see the salvation of Jehovah with you, O Judah and Jerusalem -- be not afraid nor fear ye -- to-morrow go out before them, and Jehovah `is' with you.'
20:18	And Jehoshaphat boweth -- face to the earth -- and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem have fallen before Jehovah, to bow themselves to Jehovah.
20:19	And the Levites, of the sons of the Kohathites, and of the sons of the Korhites, rise to give praise to Jehovah, God of Israel, with a loud voice on high.
20:20	And they rise early in the morning, and go out to the wilderness of Tekoa, and in their going out Jehoshaphat hath stood and saith, `Hear me, O Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem, remain stedfast in Jehovah your God, and be stedfast; remain stedfast in His prophets, and prosper.'
20:21	And he taketh counsel with the people, and appointeth singers to Jehovah, and those giving praise to the honour of holiness, in the going out before the armed `men', and saying, `Give ye thanks to Jehovah, for to the age `is' His kindness.'
20:22	And at the time they have begun with singing and praise, Jehovah hath put ambushments against the sons of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, who are coming in to Judah, and they are smitten,
20:23	and the sons of Ammon stand up, and Moab, against the inhabitants of mount Seir, to devote and to destroy, and at their finishing with the inhabitants of Seir, they helped, a man against his neighbour, to destroy.
20:24	And Judah hath come in unto the watch-tower, to the wilderness, and they look unto the multitude, and lo, they `are' carcases fallen to the earth, and there is none escaped,
20:25	and Jehoshaphat cometh in, and his people, to seize their spoil, and they find among them, in abundance, both goods and carcases, and desirable vessels, and they take spoil to themselves without prohibition, and they are three days seizing the spoil, for it `is' abundant.
20:26	And on the fourth day they have been assembled at the valley of Blessing, for there they blessed Jehovah: therefore they have called the name of that place, `Valley of Blessing,' unto this day.
20:27	And they turn back, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat at their head, to go back unto Jerusalem with joy, for Jehovah hath made them rejoice over their enemies.
20:28	And they come in to Jerusalem with psalteries, and with harps, and with trumpets, unto the house of Jehovah.
20:29	And there is a fear of God on all kingdoms of the lands in their hearing that Jehovah hath fought with the enemies of Israel,
20:30	and the kingdom of Jehoshaphat is quiet, and his God giveth rest to him round about.
20:31	And Jehoshaphat reigneth over Judah, a son of thirty and five years in his reigning, and twenty and five years he hath reigned in Jerusalem, and the name of his mother `is' Azubah daughter of Shilhi.
20:32	And he walketh in the way of his father Asa, and hath not turned aside from it, to do that which is right in the eyes of Jehovah.
20:33	Only, the high places have not turned aside, and still the people have not prepared their heart for the God of their fathers.
20:34	And the rest of the matters of Jehoshaphat, the first and the last, lo, they are written among the matters of Jehu son of Hanani, who hath been mentioned on the book of the kings of Israel.
20:35	And after this hath Jehoshaphat king of Judah joined himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, (he did wickedly in `so' doing),
20:36	and he joineth him with himself to make ships to go to Tarshish, and they make ships in Ezion-Geber,
20:37	and prophesy doth Eliezer son of Dodavah, of Mareshah, against Jehoshaphat, saying, `For thy joining thyself with Ahaziah, Jehovah hath broken up thy works;' and the ships are broken, and have not retained `power' to go unto Tarshish.
