Nehemiah - Chapter: 4


4:1	But when Sanabalat heard that we buylded the wall, he was wroth in hym selfe, and toke greate indignacion, & mocked the Iewes,
4:2	and sayde before his brethren & the souldyers of Samaria: what do these impotent Iewes? wyll the hethen suffre them? shall they offre? shall they perfourme it in one daye? shal they make the stones whole agayne that are brought to dust, and brent?
4:3	And Tobiah the Ammonite was besyde him, and sayde: Though they buylde, yet yf a foxe go vp, he shall breake downe theyr stonye wall.
4:4	Heare (O thou oure God) for we are despised, turne their shame vpon their awne heade, & geue them ouer into despisynge in the lande of their captiuite.
4:5	Couer not their wickednesse, & let not their synne be put out in thy presence: for they haue prouoked the buylders.
4:6	And so buylded we the wall, & it was ioyned whole together, vnto the half heygth therof. And the people were mynded to laboure.
4:7	And it fortuned, that when Sanabalat, and Tobiah, & the Arabians, Ammonites, & Asoodites heard, that the walles of Ierusalem were mad vp, and that the gappes beganne to be stopped, they were very wroth,
4:8	& conspired all together to come, & fyght against Ierusalem, and to make the people an hynderaunce therin.
4:9	Neuertheles, we made our prayer vnto our God, & set watchmen by them, which buylded daye & nyght ouer agaynst them.
4:10	And Iuda sayd: the strength of the bearers is to feble, & there is yet moch more morter, & we are not able to buyld on the wall.
4:11	And our aduersaries sayd: they shall not knowe nether se, tyll we come in the middes amonge them, and slaye them, and hinder the worcke.
4:12	But it fortuned that when the Iewes (which dwelt besyde them) came, they tolde vs as good as ten tymes, that in all places where ye go vnto, they are appointed to fal vpon vs.
4:13	Therfore set I the people after their kinredes wt their swerdes, speares & bowes beneth in the lowe places behynd the wal,
4:14	& I loked, & gat me vp, & sayd vnto the chefe men, to the rulers, & to the other people, be not ye afrayed of them, but thincke rather vpon the greate Lord, whych ought to be feared, & fight for your brethren, your sonnes, yor daughters, your wiues, & your houses.
4:15	Neuertheles, it chaunced that when our enemies hearde, that we had gotten worde of it. God brought their councel to naught, & we turned all againe to the wal, euery one vnto his labor.
4:16	And from that time forth it came to passe that the half parte of the yong men did the laboure, & the other half parte of them helde the speares, shyldes, bowes, and brestplates: & the rulers stode behynde all the house of Iuda,
4:17	which buylded on the wall, and bare burthens from those that laded them. With one hande dyd euery one worcke, & wt the other helde he hys weapen.
4:18	And euery one that buylded, had his swerd, gyrde by hys thygh, and so buylded they. And the trompet blewe besyde me.
4:19	And I sayd vnto the principal men, to the rulers, and to the other people: the worke is great and large, & we are separated vpon the wall one farre from another.
4:20	Loke in what place therfore ye heare the noyse of the trompet, resorte ye thyther vnto vs, & our God shal fight for vs,
4:21	& we will be labouryng in the worcke. And the halfe part of them helde the speares from the mornyng spryng, tyll the starres came forth.
4:22	And at the same tyme said I vnto the people: euery one abyde with hys seruaunt at Ierusalem, that in the night season we maye watch, and labour on the daye tyme.
4:23	As for me and my brethren, my seruauntes, and the men of the watch (which were behynde me) we put neuer of oure clothes, nomore then the other dyd theyr harnesse, saue onely because of the water.


4:1	Forsothe it was doon, whanne Sanaballath hadde herd, that we bildiden the wal, he was ful wrooth, and he was stirid greetli, and scornede the Jewis.
4:2	And he seide bifor hise britheren, and the multitude of Samaritans, What doen the feble Jewis? Whether hethene men schulen suffre hem? Whether thei schulen fille, and make sacrifice in o dai? Whether thei moun bilde stonys of the heepis of the dust, that ben brent?
4:3	But also Tobie Amanytes, his neiybore, seide, Bilde thei; if a fox stieth, he schal `skippe ouer the stony wal `of hem.
4:4	And Neemye seide, Oure God, here thou, for we ben maad dispising; turne thou the schenschip on her heed, and yyue thou hem in to dispisyng in the lond of caytifte;
4:5	hile thou not the wickidnesse of hem, and her synnes be not doon awei bifor thi face; for thei scorneden bilderis.
4:6	Therfor we bildiden the wal, and ioyneden togidere al `til to the half part, and the herte of the puple was exitid to worche.
4:7	Forsothe it was doon, whanne Sanaballat `hadde herd, and Tobie, and Arabiens, and Amanytys, and men of Azotus hadden herd, that the brekyng of the wal of Jerusalem was stoppid, and that the crasyngis hadden bigunne to be closid togidere, thei weren ful wrothe.
4:8	And alle weren gaderid togidere to come and fiyte ayens Jerusalem, and to caste tresouns.
4:9	And we preieden oure Lord God, and we settiden keperis on the wal bi dai and niyt ayens hem.
4:10	Forsothe Juda seide, The strengthe of the berere is maad feble, and the erthe is ful myche, and we moun not bilde the wal.
4:11	And oure enemyes seiden, Wite thei not, and knowe thei not, til we comen in to the myddil of hem, and sleen hem, and maken the werk to ceesse.
4:12	Forsothe it was doon, whanne Jewis came, that dwelliden bisidis hem, and seiden to vs `bi ten tymes, fro alle places fro whiche thei camen to vs,
4:13	Y ordeynede the puple in ordre, with her swerdis, and speris, and bouwis, in a place bihynde the wal bi cumpas.
4:14	Y bihelde, and roos, and seide to the principal men, and magistratis, and to `the tother part of the comyn puple, Nyle ye drede of her face; haue ye mynde of the greet Lord, and ferdful, and fiyte ye for youre britheren, and youre sones, and youre douytris, for youre wyues, and housis.
4:15	Forsothe it was doon, whanne oure enemyes hadden herd that it was teld to vs, God distriede her counsel; and alle we turneden ayen to the wallis, ech man to his werk.
4:16	And it was doon fro that dai, the half part of yonge men made werk, and the half part was redi to batel; `and speris, and scheldis, and bouwis, and harburiouns, and princes aftir hem, in al the hows of men of Juda,
4:17	bildynge in the wal, and berynge birthuns, and puttynge on; with her oon hond thei maden werk, and with the tother thei helden swerd.
4:18	For ech of the bilderis was gird with the swerd on the reynes; and thei bildiden, and sowneden with clariouns bisidis me.
4:19	And Y seide to the principal men, and magistratis, and to the tothir part of the comyn puple, The werk is greet and brood, and we ben departid fer in the wal, oon from anothir;
4:20	in what euer place ye heren the sown of the trumpe, renne ye togidere thidur to vs; for oure God schal fiyte for vs.
4:21	And we `vs silf schal make the werk, and the half part of vs holde speris, fro `the stiyng of the moreutid til that sterris go out.
4:22	And `in that tyme Y seide to the puple, Ech man with his child dwelle in the myddil of Jerusalem, and whilis be to vs `bi nyyt and dai to worche.
4:23	But Y, and my britheren, and my keperis, and children, that weren after me, diden not of oure clothis; ech man was maad nakid oneli to waischyng.

4:8	and cospyred all together, to come and fight against Ierusalem, & to make an hinderaunce therin.
4:9	Neuertheles we made or praier vnto oure God, & set watchme vpo the wall daye & night ouer against them.
4:10	And Iuda saide: The stregth of the bearers is to feble, & there is to moch dust, we are not able to builde on the wall.
4:11	And or aduersaries thought: They shall not knowe nether se, tyll we come in the myddes amonge the, and slaye them, & hynder ye worke.
4:12	But whan the Iewes that dwelt besyde them, came out of all the places where they dwelt aboute vs, and tolde vs as good as te tymes,
4:13	then set I the people after their kynreds with their swerdes, speares & bowes beneth in the lowe places behynde the wall,
4:14	& loked, and gat me vp, and sayde vnto the chefe men and rulers, & to the other people: Be not ye afrayed of them, thynke vpon ye greate LORDE which ought to be feared, & fighte for yor brethren, sonnes, daughters, wyues, & houses.
4:15	Neuertheles whan or enemies herde yt we had gotten worde of it, God broughte their councell to naughte, and we turned all againe to the wall, euery one vnto his labor.
4:16	And from that time forth it came to passe, yt the halfe parte of the yonge men dyd the laboure, & the other halfe parte helde the speares, shyldes, bowes, and brestplates, and the rulers stode behynde all the house of Iuda,
4:17	which buylded on the wall, & bare burthes, from those that laded the. With one hande dyd they ye worke, and with the other helde they the weapen.
4:18	And euery one yt buylded, had his swerde girde by his side, & so builded they. And the trompetters stode beside me.
4:19	And I sayde vnto the pryncipall men, & rulers, and to ye other people: The worke is greate & large, & we are separated vpon the wall one farre from another.
4:20	Loke in what place now ye heare the noise of ye trompe, resorte ye thither vnto vs. Oure God shal fight for vs,
4:21	& we wil be labourige in ye worke. And the halfe parte of the helde ye speares fro ye morninge springe, till ye starres came forth.
4:22	And at ye same tyme sayde I vnto ye people: Euery one abyde with his seruaunt at Ierusalem, yt in the night season we maye geue attendaunce to ye watch, and to laboure on the daye tyme.
4:23	As for me and my brethren, & my seruauntes, and ye men of the watch behynde me, we put neuer of oure clothes, so so moch as to washe oure selues.
