| 5:1 | And there was a great crie of the people, and of their wiues, against their brethren the Iewes. |
| 5:2 | For there were that said, We, our sonnes, and our daughters are many: therefore wee take vp corne for them, that we may eat, and liue. |
| 5:3 | Some also there were that saide, We haue morgaged our landes, vineyards and houses, that we might buy corne, because of the dearth. |
| 5:4 | There were also that said, Wee haue borrowed money for the kings tribute, and that vpon our lands and vineyards. |
| 5:5 | Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and loe, wee bring into bondage our sonnes and our daughters, to bee seruants, and some of our daughters are brought vnto bondage already, neither is it in our power to redeeme them: for other men haue our lands and vineyards. |
| 5:6 | And I was very angry, when I heard their crie, and these words. |
| 5:7 | Then I consulted with my selfe, and I rebuked the Nobles, and the rulers, and said vnto them, You exact vsurie, euery one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them: |
| 5:8 | And I said vnto them, We, after our abilitie, haue redeemed our brethren the Iewes, which were sold vnto the heathen; and will you euen sell your brethren? Or shall they be sold vnto vs? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answere. |
| 5:9 | Also I said, It is not good that yee doe: ought yee not to walke in the feare of our God, because of the reproch of the heathen our enemies? |
| 5:10 | I likewise, and my brethren, and my seruants, might exact of them money and corne: I pray you let vs leaue off this vsurie. |
| 5:11 | Restore, I pray you, to them, euen this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliue-yards, and their houses, also the hundreth part of the money, and of the corne, the wine, and the oyle, that ye exact of them. |
| 5:12 | Then said they, Wee will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we doe, as thou sayest. Then I called the Priests, and tooke an oath of them, that they should doe according to this promise. |
| 5:13 | Also I shooke my lap, and said, So God shake out euery man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, euen thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the Congregation said, Amen, and praised the Lord. And the people did according to this promise. |
| 5:14 | Moreouer, from the time that I was appointed to be their gouernor in the land of Iudah, from the twentieth yeere euen vnto the two and thirtieth yere of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelue yeres, I and my brethren, haue not eaten the bread of the gouernour: |
| 5:15 | But the former gouernours that had bene before me, were chargeable vnto the people, and had taken of them bread, and wine, beside fourtie shekels of siluer, yea euen their seruants bare rule ouer the people: but so did not I, because of the feare of God. |
| 5:16 | Yea also I continued in the worke of this wall, neither bought wee any land: and all my seruants were gathered thither vnto the worke. |
| 5:17 | Moreouer, there were at my table, an hundred and fiftie of the Iewes and rulers, besides those that came vnto vs from among the heathen that are about vs. |
| 5:18 | Now that which was prepared for me daily, was one oxe, and sixe choice sheepe; also foules were prepared for mee, and once in ten dayes, store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the gouernour, because the bondage was heauy vpon this people. |
| 5:19 | Thinke vpon mee, my God, for good, according to all that I haue done for this people. |
| 5:1 | And there arose a great complaynt of the people and their wyues against their brethre the Iewes |
| 5:2 | For there were some that saide, Our sonnes and daughters and we are very many: therefore wyll we take corne for them, that we may eate and liue |
| 5:3 | Some also there were that saide: Let vs set our landes, vineyardes, and houses to pledge, and take vp corne in the dearth |
| 5:4 | But some there were that saide: We haue borowed money for the kinges tribute, and that vpon our landes & vineyardes |
| 5:5 | And now our fleshe is as the fleshe of our brethren, and our children as their children: and loe we bring into subiection our sonnes and our daughters as seruauntes, and some of our daughters are subdued vnto bondage alredie, and no strength is there in our handes to redeeme them, and other men haue our landes and vineyardes |
| 5:6 | And when I heard their complaynt and such wordes, it displeased me sore |
| 5:7 | And I aduised so in my minde, that I rebuked the counsellers and the rulers, and saide vnto them: Euery one of you layeth great burdens vpon his brother. And I brought a great congregation against them |
| 5:8 | And saide vnto them: We after our habilitie haue redeemed our brethren the Iewes, which were solde vnto the heathen: And wyll you sell your brethre againe, and shall they be solde vnto vs? Then held they their peace, and coulde finde nothing to aunswere |
| 5:9 | And Nehemia saide, It is not good that ye do: Ought ye not to walke in the feare of our God, because of the rebuke of the heathen that are our enemies |
| 5:10 | I and my brethren, and my seruauntes, do lende them money and corne: I pray you let vs leaue of this burden |
| 5:11 | Therefore this same day I pray you see that ye restore them their landes againe, their vineyardes, olyue gardens, and their houses, and remit the hundred parte of the money, of the corne, wine, and oyle that ye haue exacted of them |
| 5:12 | Then saide they: We wyll restore them againe, & wyll require nothing of them, and wyll do as thou hast spoken. And I called the priestes, and tooke an oth of them that they should do so |
| 5:13 | And I shooke my lappe and saide: God shake out euery man after the same maner from his house & laboure that maintaineth not this worde, euen thus be he shaken out, and voyde. And all the congregation saide, Amen, and praysed the Lorde: And the people did according to this promise |
| 5:14 | And from the time foorth that the king committed vnto me to be captayne of them that were in the lande of Iuda, euen from the twentie yere, vnto the thirtie & two yere of king Artaxerxes, that is twelue yeres, I with my brethre liued not of such sustinaunce as was geuen to a captayne |
| 5:15 | For the olde captaynes that were before me, had ben chargeable vnto the people, and had taken of them bread & wine, beside fouretie sicles of siluer, yea and their seruauntes had oppressed the people: But so did not I, and that because of the feare of God |
| 5:16 | But I laboured also in the worke vpon the wall, and we bought no lande: and all my seruauntes came thither together vnto the worke |
| 5:17 | Moreouer, there were at my table an hundred and fiftie of the Iewes and rulers, which came vnto me from among the heathen that are about vs |
| 5:18 | And there was prepared for me dayly an oxe and sixe chosen sheepe, and birdes were prepared for me: and euer once in ten dayes wine for all in aboundance: Yet required not I the liuing of a captayne, for the bondage was greeuous vnto the people |
| 5:19 | Thinke vpon me my God vnto the best, according to all that I haue done for this people |
| 5:1 | Nowe there was a great crie of the people, and of their wiues against their brethren the Iewes. |
| 5:2 | For there were that said, We, our sonnes and our daughters are many, therefore we take vp corne, that we may eate and liue. |
| 5:3 | And there were that saide, We must gage our landes, and our vineyardes, and our houses, and take vp corne for the famine. |
| 5:4 | There were also that said, We haue borowed money for the Kings tribute vpon our landes and our vineyardes. |
| 5:5 | And nowe our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, and our sonnes as their sonnes: and lo, we bring into subiection our sonnes and our daughters, as seruants, and there be of our daughters nowe in subiection, and there is no power in our handes: for other men haue our landes and our vineyardes. |
| 5:6 | Then was I very angrie when I heard their crie and these wordes. |
| 5:7 | And I thought in my minde, and I rebuked the princes, and the rulers, and saide vnto them, You lay burthens euery one vpon his brethren: and I set a great assemblie against them, |
| 5:8 | And I said vnto them, We (according to our abilitie) haue redeemed our brethren the Iewes, which were solde vnto the heathen: and will you sell your brethren againe, or shall they be solde vnto vs? Then helde they their peace, and could not answere. |
| 5:9 | I said also, That which ye do, is not good. Ought ye not to walke in the feare of our God, for the reproche of the heathen our enemies? |
| 5:10 | For euen I, my brethren, and my seruants doe lende them money and corne: I pray you, let vs leaue off this burden. |
| 5:11 | Restore, I pray you, vnto them this day their landes, their vineyardes, their oliues, and their houses, and remit the hundreth part of the siluer and of the corne, of the wine, and of the oyle that ye exact of them. |
| 5:12 | Then said they, We will restore it, and will not require it of them: we will doe as thou hast said. Then I called the Priestes, and caused them to sweare, that they shoulde doe according to this promise. |
| 5:13 | So I shooke my lappe, and said, So let God shake out euery man that wil not perfourme this promise from his house, and from his labour: euen thus let him be shaken out, and emptied. And all the Cogregation said, Amen, and praised the Lord: and the people did according to this promise. |
| 5:14 | And from the time that the King gaue me charge to be gouernour in the lande of Iudah, from the twentieth yeere, euen vnto the two and thirtieth yeere of King Artahshashte, that is, twelue yeere, I, and my brethren haue not eaten the bread of the gouernour. |
| 5:15 | For the former gouernours that were before me, had bene chargeable vnto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, besides fourtie shekels of siluer: yea, and their seruants bare rule ouer the people: but so did not I, because of the feare of God. |
| 5:16 | But rather I fortified a portion in the worke of this wall, and we bought no lande, and all my seruants came thither together vnto the worke. |
| 5:17 | Moreouer there were at my table an hundreth and fiftie of the Iewes, and rulers, which came vnto vs from among the heathen that are about vs. |
| 5:18 | And there was prepared daily an oxe, and sixe chosen sheepe, and birdes were prepared for me, and within ten dayes wine for all in abundance. Yet for all this I required not the bread of the gouernour: for the bondage was grieuous vnto this people. |
| 5:19 | Remember me, O my God, in goodnesse, according to all that I haue done for this people. |
