Isaiah - Chapter: 37


37:1	And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.
37:2	And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.
37:3	And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.
37:4	It may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left.
37:5	So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
37:6	And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.
37:7	Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.
37:8	So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.
37:9	And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come forth to make war with thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,
37:10	Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God, in whom thou trustest, deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.
37:11	Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly; and shalt thou be delivered?
37:12	Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar?
37:13	Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?
37:14	And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD.
37:15	And Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD, saying,
37:16	O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.
37:17	Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God.
37:18	Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries.
37:19	And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.
37:20	Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.
37:21	Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria:
37:22	This is the word which the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin, the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.
37:23	Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.
37:24	By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his Carmel.
37:25	I have digged, and drunk water; and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of the besieged places.
37:26	Hast thou not heard long ago, how I have done it; and of ancient times, that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste defenced cities into ruinous heaps.
37:27	Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded: they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up.
37:28	But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rage against me.
37:29	Because thy rage against me, and thy tumult, is come up into mine ears, therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.
37:30	And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such as groweth of itself; and the second year that which springeth of the same: and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof.
37:31	And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward:
37:32	For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.
37:33	Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it.
37:34	By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD.
37:35	For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.
37:36	Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
37:37	So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.
37:38	And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.


37:1	ויהי כשׁמע המלך חזקיהו ויקרע את בגדיו ויתכס בשׂק ויבא בית יהוה׃
37:2	וישׁלח את אליקים אשׁר על הבית ואת שׁבנא הסופר ואת זקני הכהנים מתכסים בשׂקים אל ישׁעיהו בן אמוץ הנביא׃
37:3	ויאמרו אליו כה אמר חזקיהו יום צרה ותוכחה ונאצה היום הזה כי באו בנים עד משׁבר וכח אין ללדה׃
37:4	אולי ישׁמע יהוה אלהיך את דברי רב שׁקה אשׁר שׁלחו מלך אשׁור אדניו לחרף אלהים חי והוכיח בדברים אשׁר שׁמע יהוה אלהיך ונשׂאת תפלה בעד השׁארית הנמצאה׃
37:5	ויבאו עבדי המלך חזקיהו אל ישׁעיהו׃
37:6	ויאמר אליהם ישׁעיהו כה תאמרון אל אדניכם כה אמר יהוה אל תירא מפני הדברים אשׁר שׁמעת אשׁר גדפו נערי מלך אשׁור אותי׃
37:7	הנני נותן בו רוח ושׁמע שׁמועה ושׁב אל ארצו והפלתיו בחרב בארצו׃
37:8	וישׁב רב שׁקה וימצא את מלך אשׁור נלחם על לבנה כי שׁמע כי נסע מלכישׁ׃
37:9	וישׁמע על תרהקה מלך כושׁ לאמר יצא להלחם אתך וישׁמע וישׁלח מלאכים אל חזקיהו לאמר׃
37:10	כה תאמרון אל חזקיהו מלך יהודה לאמר אל ישׁאך אלהיך אשׁר אתה בוטח בו לאמר לא תנתן ירושׁלם ביד מלך אשׁור׃
37:11	הנה אתה שׁמעת אשׁר עשׂו מלכי אשׁור לכל הארצות להחרימם ואתה תנצל׃
37:12	ההצילו אותם אלהי הגוים אשׁר השׁחיתו אבותי את גוזן ואת חרן ורצף ובני עדן אשׁר בתלשׂר׃
37:13	איה מלך חמת ומלך ארפד ומלך לעיר ספרוים הנע ועוה׃
37:14	ויקח חזקיהו את הספרים מיד המלאכים ויקראהו ויעל בית יהוה ויפרשׂהו חזקיהו לפני יהוה׃
37:15	ויתפלל חזקיהו אל יהוה לאמר׃
37:16	יהוה צבאות אלהי ישׂראל ישׁב הכרבים אתה הוא האלהים לבדך לכל ממלכות הארץ אתה עשׂית את השׁמים ואת הארץ׃
37:17	הטה יהוה אזנך ושׁמע פקח יהוה עינך וראה ושׁמע את כל דברי סנחריב אשׁר שׁלח לחרף אלהים חי׃
37:18	אמנם יהוה החריבו מלכי אשׁור את כל הארצות ואת ארצם׃
37:19	ונתן את אלהיהם באשׁ כי לא אלהים המה כי אם מעשׂה ידי אדם עץ ואבן ויאבדום׃
37:20	ועתה יהוה אלהינו הושׁיענו מידו וידעו כל ממלכות הארץ כי אתה יהוה לבדך׃
37:21	וישׁלח ישׁעיהו בן אמוץ אל חזקיהו לאמר כה אמר יהוה אלהי ישׂראל אשׁר התפללת אלי אל סנחריב מלך אשׁור׃
37:22	זה הדבר אשׁר דבר יהוה עליו בזה לך לעגה לך בתולת בת ציון אחריך ראשׁ הניעה בת ירושׁלם׃
37:23	את מי חרפת וגדפת ועל מי הרימותה קול ותשׂא מרום עיניך אל קדושׁ ישׂראל׃
37:24	ביד עבדיך חרפת אדני ותאמר ברב רכבי אני עליתי מרום הרים ירכתי לבנון ואכרת קומת ארזיו מבחר ברשׁיו ואבוא מרום קצו יער כרמלו׃
37:25	אני קרתי ושׁתיתי מים ואחרב בכף פעמי כל יארי מצור׃
37:26	הלוא שׁמעת למרחוק אותה עשׂיתי מימי קדם ויצרתיה עתה הבאתיה ותהי להשׁאות גלים נצים ערים בצרות׃
37:27	וישׁביהן קצרי יד חתו ובשׁו היו עשׂב שׂדה וירק דשׁא חציר גגות ושׁדמה לפני קמה׃
37:28	ושׁבתך וצאתך ובואך ידעתי ואת התרגזך אלי׃
37:29	יען התרגזך אלי ושׁאננך עלה באזני ושׂמתי חחי באפך ומתגי בשׂפתיך והשׁיבתיך בדרך אשׁר באת׃
37:30	וזה לך האות אכול השׁנה ספיח ובשׁנה השׁנית שׁחיס ובשׁנה השׁלישׁית זרעו וקצרו ונטעו כרמים ואכול פרים׃
37:31	ויספה פליטת בית יהודה הנשׁארה שׁרשׁ למטה ועשׂה פרי למעלה׃
37:32	כי מירושׁלם תצא שׁארית ופליטה מהר ציון קנאת יהוה צבאות תעשׂה זאת׃
37:33	לכן כה אמר יהוה אל מלך אשׁור לא יבוא אל העיר הזאת ולא יורה שׁם חץ ולא יקדמנה מגן ולא ישׁפך עליה סללה׃
37:34	בדרך אשׁר בא בה ישׁוב ואל העיר הזאת לא יבוא נאם יהוה׃
37:35	וגנותי על העיר הזאת להושׁיעה למעני ולמען דוד עבדי׃
37:36	ויצא מלאך יהוה ויכה במחנה אשׁור מאה ושׁמנים וחמשׁה אלף וישׁכימו בבקר והנה כלם פגרים מתים׃
37:37	ויסע וילך וישׁב סנחריב מלך אשׁור וישׁב בנינוה׃
37:38	ויהי הוא משׁתחוה בית נסרך אלהיו ואדרמלך ושׂראצר בניו הכהו בחרב והמה נמלטו ארץ אררט וימלך אסר חדן בנו תחתיו׃


37:1	And it cometh to pass, at the king Hezekiah's hearing, that he rendeth his garments, and covereth himself with sackcloth, and entereth the house of Jehovah,
37:2	and sendeth Eliakim, who `is' over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covering themselves with sackcloth, unto Isaiah son of Amoz the prophet,
37:3	and they say unto him, `Thus said Hezekiah, A day of distress, and rebuke, and despising, `is' this day; for come have sons unto the birth, and power there is not to bear.
37:4	`It may be Jehovah thy God doth hear the words of Rabshakeh with which the king of Asshur his lord hath sent him to reproach the living God, and hath decided concerning the words that Jehovah thy God hath heard, and thou hast lifted up prayer for the remnant that is found.'
37:5	And the servants of king Hezekiah come in unto Isaiah,
37:6	and Isaiah saith unto them, `Thus do ye say unto your lord, Thus said Jehovah, Be not afraid because of the words that thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Asshur have reviled Me.
37:7	Lo, I am giving in him a spirit, and he hath heard a report, and hath turned back unto his land, and I have caused him to fall by the sword in his land.'
37:8	And Rabshakeh turneth back and findeth the king of Asshur fighting against Libnah, for he hath heard that he hath journeyed from Lachish.
37:9	And he heareth concerning Tirhakah king of Cush, saying, `He hath come out to fight with thee;' and he heareth, and sendeth messengers unto Hezekiah, saying,
37:10	`Thus do ye speak unto Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God lift thee up in whom thou art trusting, saying, Jerusalem is not given into the hand of the king of Asshur.
37:11	Lo, thou hast heard that which the kings of Asshur have done to all the lands -- to devote them -- and thou art delivered!
37:12	Did the gods of the nations deliver them whom my fathers destroyed -- Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the sons of Eden, who `are' in Telassar?
37:13	Where `is' the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah?'
37:14	And Hezekiah taketh the letters out of the hand of the messengers, and readeth them, and Hezekiah goeth up to the house of Jehovah, and Hezekiah spreadeth it before Jehovah.
37:15	And Hezekiah prayeth unto Jehovah, saying,
37:16	`Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, inhabiting the cherubs, Thou `art' God Himself -- Thyself alone -- to all kingdoms of the earth, Thou hast made the heavens and the earth.
37:17	Incline, O Jehovah, Thine ear, and hear; open, O Jehovah, Thine eyes and see; and hear Thou all the words of Sennacherib that he hath sent to reproach the living God.
37:18	`Truly, O Jehovah, kings of Asshur have laid waste all the lands and their land,
37:19	so as to put their gods into fire -- for they `are' no gods, but work of the hands of man, wood and stone -- and they destroy them.
37:20	And now, Jehovah our God, save us from his hand, and all kingdoms of the earth do know that Thou `art' Jehovah, Thyself alone.'
37:21	And Isaiah son of Amoz sendeth unto Hezekiah, saying, `Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, That which thou hast prayed unto me concerning Sennacherib king of Asshur --
37:22	this `is' the word that Jehovah spake concerning him: Trampled on thee, laughed at thee, Hath the virgin daughter of Zion, Behind thee shaken the head hath the daughter of Jerusalem.
37:23	Whom hast thou reproached and reviled? And against whom lifted up the voice? Yea, thou dost lift up on high thine eyes Against the Holy One of Israel.
37:24	By the hand of thy servants Thou hast reviled the Lord, and sayest: In the multitude of my chariots I have come up to a high place of hills, The sides of Lebanon, And I cut down the height of its cedars, The choice of its firs, And I enter the high place of its extremity, The forest of its Carmel.
37:25	I -- I have dug and drunk waters, And I dry up with the sole of my steps All floods of a bulwark.
37:26	Hast thou not heard from afar? -- it I did, From days of old -- that I formed it. Now, I have brought it in, And it is to make desolate, Ruinous heaps -- fenced cities,
37:27	And their inhabitants are feeble-handed, They were broken down, and are dried up. They have been the herb of the field, And the greenness of the tender grass, Grass of the roofs, And blasted corn, before it hath risen up.
37:28	And thy sitting down, and thy going out, And thy coming in, I have known, And thy anger towards Me.
37:29	Because of thy anger towards Me, And thy noise -- it came up into Mine ears, I have put My hook in thy nose, And My bridle in thy lips, And I have caused thee to turn back In the way in which thou camest.
37:30	-- And this to thee `is' the sign, Food of the year `is' self-sown grain, And in the second year the spontaneous growth, And in the third year, sow ye and reap, And plant vineyards, and eat their fruit.
37:31	And it hath continued -- the escaped Of the house of Judah that hath been left -- To take root beneath, And it hath made fruit upward.
37:32	For from Jerusalem goeth forth a remnant, And an escape from mount Zion, The zeal of Jehovah of Hosts doth this.
37:33	Therefore, thus said Jehovah, Concerning the king of Asshur: He doth not come in unto this city, Nor doth he shoot there an arrow, Nor doth he come before it `with' shield, Nor doth he pour out against it a mount.
37:34	In the way that he came, in it he turneth back, And unto this city he doth not come in, An affirmation of Jehovah,
37:35	And I have covered over this city, To save it, for Mine own sake, And for the sake of David My servant.'
37:36	And a messenger of Jehovah goeth out, and smiteth in the camp of Asshur a hundred and eighty and five thousand; and `men' rise early in the morning, and lo, all of them `are' dead corpses.
37:37	And journey, and go, and turn back doth Sennacherib king of Asshur, and dwelleth in Nineveh.
37:38	And it cometh to pass, he is bowing himself in the house of Nisroch his god, and Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons have smitten him with the sword, and they have escaped to the land of Ararat, and Esar-Haddon his son reigneth in his stead.
