Isaiah - Chapter: 37


37:1	And it came to passe when King Hezekiah heard it, that hee rent his clothes, and couered himselfe with sackecloth, and went into the house of the Lord.
37:2	And hee sent Eliakim, who was ouer the houshold, and Shebna the Scribe, and the Elders of the Priestes couered with sackecloth, vnto Isaiah the Prophet the sonne of Amoz.
37:3	And they sayd vnto him; Thus sayth Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemie: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring foorth.
37:4	It may be the Lord thy God will heare the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproch the liuing God, and will reprooue the words which the Lord thy God hath heard: wherefore lift vp thy prayer for the remnant that is left.
37:5	So the seruants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
37:6	And Isaiah sayd vnto them; Thus shall yee say vnto your master, Thus sayth the Lord, Be not afraid of the wordes that thou hast heard, wherewith the seruants of the king of Assyria haue blasphemed me.
37:7	Behold, I will send a blast vpon him, and hee shall heare a rumour, and returne to his owne land, and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his owne land.
37:8	So Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for hee had heard that he was departed from Lachish.
37:9	And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, Hee is come foorth to make warre with thee: and when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying;
37:10	Thus shall ye speake to Hezekiah King of Iudah, saying, Let not thy God in whom thou trustest deceiue thee, saying, Ierusalem shall not bee giuen into the hand of the king of Assyria.
37:11	Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria haue done to all lands by destroying them vtterly, and shalt thou be deliuered?
37:12	Haue the gods of the nations deliuered them which my fathers haue destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar?
37:13	Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the citie of Sepharuaim, Hena and Iuah?
37:14	And Hezekiah receiued the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it, and Hezekiah went vp vnto the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord.
37:15	And Hezekiah prayed vnto the Lord, saying,
37:16	O Lord of hostes, God of Israel, that dwellest betweene the Cherubims, thou art the God, euen thou alone, of all the kingdomes of the earth, thou hast made heauen and earth.
37:17	Encline thine eare, O Lord, and heare, Open thine eyes, O Lord, and see, and heare all the wordes of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproch the liuing God.
37:18	Of a trueth, Lord, the kings of Assyria haue laid waste all the nations and their countreys,
37:19	And haue cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of mens hands, wood and stone: therfore they haue destroyed them.
37:20	Now therefore, O Lord our God, saue vs from his hand, that all the kingdomes of the earth may knowe, that thou art the Lord, euen thou onely.
37:21	Then Isaiah the sonne of Amoz sent vnto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Wheras thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria:
37:22	This is the worde which the Lord hath spoken concerning him: The virgin, the daughter of Zion hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorne, the daughter of Ierusalem hath shaken her head at thee.
37:23	Whom hast thou reproched and blasphemed? and against whome hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted vp thine eyes on high? euen against the Holy One of Israel.
37:24	By thy seruants hast thou reproched the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my charets am I come vp to the height of the mountaines, to the sides of Lebanon, and I wil cut downe the tall cedars thereof, and the choise firre trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, and the forrest of his Carmel.
37:25	I haue digged and drunke water, and with the sole of my feete haue I dried vp all the riuers of the besieged places.
37:26	Hast thou not heard long agoe, how I haue done it, and of ancient times, that I haue formed it? now haue I brought it to passe, that thou shouldest be to lay waste defenced cities into ruinous heapes.
37:27	Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded: they were as the grasse of the field, and as the greene herbe, as the grasse on the house tops, and as corne blasted before it be growen vp.
37:28	But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy comming in, and thy rage against me.
37:29	Because thy rage against me, and thy tumult is come vp into mine eares: therefore will I put my hooke in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turne thee backe by the way by which thou camest.
37:30	And this shall be a signe vnto thee, Ye shall eate this yeere such as groweth of it felfe: and the second yeere that which springeth of the same: and in the third yeere sow ye and reape, and plant vineyards, and eate the fruit thereof.
37:31	And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Iudah, shal againe take roote downeward, and beare fruite vpward.
37:32	For out of Ierusalem shall goe forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeale of the Lord of hostes shall doe this.
37:33	Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this citie, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor cast a banke against it.
37:34	By the way that he came, by the same shall he returne, and shall not come into this citie, saith the Lord.
37:35	For I will defend this citie to saue it, for mine owne sake, and for my seruant Dauids sake.
37:36	Then the Angel of the Lord went forth, and smote in the campe of the Assyrians a hundred and fourescore and fiue thousand: and when they arose earely in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
37:37	So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went, and returned, and dwelt at Nineueh.
37:38	And it came to passe as hee was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adramelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword, and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esarhaddon his sonne reigned in his stead.

37:2	And he sent Eliakim the stewarde of the house, aud Shebna the chanceller, with the Elders of the Priestes, clothed in sackcloth vnto Isaiah the Prophet, the sonne of Amoz.
37:3	And they sayd vnto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of tribulation and of rebuke and blasphemie: for the children are come to the birth, and there is no strength to bring foorth.
37:4	If so be the Lord thy God hath heard the wordes of Rabshakeh, whom the King of Asshur his master hath sent to raile on the liuing God, and to reproch him with wordes which the Lord thy God hath heard, then lift thou vp thy prayer for the remnant that are left.
37:5	So the seruants of the King Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
37:6	And Isaiah sayde vnto them, Thus say vnto your master, Thus saith the Lord, Be not afrayd of the wordes that thou hast heard, wherewith the seruants of the king of Asshur haue blasphemed me.
37:7	Beholde, I wil send a blast vpon him, and he shall heare a noyse, and returne to his owne land, and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his owne land.
37:8	So Rabshakeh returned, and found the King of Asshur fighting against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.
37:9	He heard also men say of Tirhakah, King of Ethiopia, Beholde, he is come out to fight against thee: and when he heard it, he sent other messengers to Hezekiah, saying,
37:10	Thus shall ye speake to Hezekiah King of Iudah, saying, Let not thy God deceiue thee, in whom thou trustest, saying, Ierusalem shall not be giuen into the hand of the King of Asshur.

37:18	Trueth it is, O Lord, that the Kings of Asshur haue destroyed all lands, and their countrey,
37:19	And haue cast their gods in ye fire: for they were no gods, but the worke of mans hands, euen wood or stone: therefore they destroyed them.
37:20	Nowe therefore, O Lord our God, saue thou vs out of his hand, that all the kingdomes of the earth may knowe, that thou onely art the Lord.
37:21	Then Isaiah the sonne of Amoz sent vnto Hezekiah, saying, Thus sayth the Lord God of Israel, Because thou hast prayed vnto me, concerning Saneherib king of Asshur,
37:22	This is the worde that the Lord hath spoken against him, the virgine, the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorne: the daughter of Ierusalem, hath shaken her head at thee.
37:23	Whome hast thou railed on and blasphemed? and against whome hast thou exalted thy voyce, and lifted vp thine eyes on hie? euen against the holy one of Israel.
37:24	By thy seruants hast thou railed on the Lord, and sayd, By the multitude of my charets I am come vp to the top of the mountaines to the sides of Lebanon, and will cut downe the hie cedars thereof, and the faire firre trees thereof, and I will goe vp to the heightes of his top and to the forest of his fruitfull places.
37:25	I haue digged and drunke the waters, and with the plant of my feete haue I dryed all the riuers closed in.
37:26	Hast thou not heard howe I haue of olde time made it, and haue formed it long ago? and should I now bring it, that it should be destroyed, and layde on ruinous heapes, as cities defensed?
37:27	Whose inhabitants haue small power, and are afrayd and confounded: they are like the grasse of the field and greene herbe, or grasse on the house tops, or corne blassed afore it be growen.
37:28	But I know thy dwelling, and thy going out, and thy comming in, and thy fury against me.
37:29	Because thou ragest against me, and thy tumult is come vnto mine eares, therefore will I put mine hooke in thy nostrels, and my bridle in thy lips, and wil bring thee backe againe the same way thou camest.
37:30	And this shalbe a signe vnto thee, O Hezekiah, Thou shalt eate this yeere such as groweth of it selfe: and the second yeere, such things as growe without sowing: and in the third yeere, sowe ye and reape, and plant vineyards, and eate the fruite thereof.
37:31	And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Iudah, shall againe take roote downward and beare fruite vpward.
37:32	For out of Ierusalem shall goe a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeale of the Lord of hostes shall doe this.
37:33	Therefore thus sayth the Lord, concerning the King of Asshur, He shall not enter into this citie, nor shoote an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a mount against it.
37:34	By the same way that he came, he shall returne, and not come into this citie, saith the Lord.
37:35	For I will defend this citie to saue it, for mine owne sake, and for my seruant Dauids sake.
37:36	Then the Angel of the Lord went out, and smote in the campe of Asshur an hundreth, fourescore, and fiue thousand: so when they arose early in the morning, beholde, they were all dead corpses.
37:37	So Saneherib king of Asshur departed, and went away and returned and dwelt at Nineueh.
37:38	And as he was in the temple worshipping of Nisroch his god, Adramelech and Sharezer his sonnes slewe him with the sword, and they escaped into the land of Ararat: and Esarhaddon his sonne reigned in his steade.


37:1	When Hezekias hearde that, he rent hys clothes, and putt on a sacke cloth, and went into the temple of the Lorde.
37:2	But he sente Eliakim the president. Sobna the scribe, with the eldest prestes clothed in sacke, vnto the prophet Esay the sonne of Amoz,
37:3	and they said vnto hym: Thus sayth Hezekias: Thys is the daye of trouble, of plage and of blasphemye: for the children are come to the place of byrth: but there is no power to brynge them forth.
37:4	The Lorde thy God (no doubte) hath well consydered the wordes of Rabsaketh, whom his Lorde the king of Assirians hath sent to defye & blaspheme the lyuynge God: with soche wordes as the Lorde thy God hath hearde ryght well. And therfore, lyfte vp thy prayer for the remnaunt, that yet are left.
37:5	So the seruauntes of the kynge Hezekias came to Esay.
37:6	And Esay gaue them thys answere: Saye thus vnto your lorde: thus sayth the Lorde: Be not afraied of the wordes that thou hast hearde wherwith the kyng of the Assirians seruauntes haue blasphemed me.
37:7	Beholde, I will cause a wynde to go ouer him, assone as he heareth the rumour, he shall go again into hys contrey: there wyll I destroye hym with the swearde in his awne lande.
37:8	Nowe when Rabsakeh returned, he founde the king of Assiria laying sege to Libnas: for he had vnderstande that he was departed from Lachis.
37:9	For ther came a rumour that Tharhakas kinge of Ethiopia was come forth to warre agaynst him. And when the king of Assiria heard that, he sent other messaungers to kyng Hezekias wt this commaundement:
37:10	Saye thus to Hezekias king of Iuda: Let not thy God disceaue the, in whom thou hopest, and sayest: Ierusalem shall not be geuen into the handes of the king of Assiria.
37:11	For lo, thou knowest well howe the kinges of Assiria haue handled all the landes that they haue subuerted, and hopest thou to escape?
37:12	Were the people of Gentyles (whom my progenitours conquered) deliuered at any tyme thorow their goddes? As namely, Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the chyldren of Eden, which were at Thalassar.
37:13	Where is the kynge of Hemah, and the kyng of Arphad, and the king of the cytie Sepharuaim, Ena & Aua?
37:14	Now when Ezekia had receaued the lettre of the messaungers, and read it, he went vp into the house of the Lorde, and opened the letter before the Lorde.
37:15	And Ezekia prayed before the Lorde on this maner.
37:16	O Lorde of Hostes, thou God of Israel, which dwellest vpon Cherubin. Thou art the God, that onely is God of all the kyngdomes of the worlde, for thou onely hast created heauen and earth.
37:17	Enclyne thyne eare Lorde & consydre, open thyne eyes, O Lorde, and se, and pondre all the wordes vpon Sennaherib, which hath sent his embassage to blaspheme the lyuyng God
37:18	It is true, O Lorde, that the kynges of Assyria haue conquered all kyngdomes and landes,
37:19	and cast theyr goddes in the fyre. Not withstandynge those were no goddes, but the worckes of mens handes, of wood or stone, therfore haue they destroyed them.
37:20	Delyuer vs then, O Lorde oure God, from the handes of Sennaherib, that all Kyngdomes of the earth maye knowe, that thou onely art the Lorde.
37:21	Then Esaye the sonne of Amoz sent vnto Hezekia, sayinge: Thus sayth the Lorde God of Israel. Where as thou hast made thy prayer vnto me, as touchyng Sennaherib the kynge of Assyria,
37:22	this is the answere, that the Lorde hath geuen concernynge hym. Despised art thou, and mocked (O daughter of Syon) he hath shaken his head at the, O daughter of Ierusalem.
37:23	But thou Sennaherib. whom hast thou defyed and blasphemed? Agaynst whom hast thou lifted vp thy voyce, and exalted thy proude lookes? euen agaynst the holy one of Israel.
37:24	Thou with thy seruauntes hast blasphemed the Lorde, and thus holdest thou of thy selfe. I will couer the hye mountaynes, and sydes of Libanus with my horsmen. And there will I cut downe the hye Cedre trees and the fayrest Fyrre trees. I wyll vp into the heygth of it, and into the chefest of hys tymbre woddes.
37:25	If there be no water, I wyll graue and drinke. And as for waters of defence, I shall drye them vp with the fete of myne hoost.
37:26	Yee, hast thou not hearde, what I haue taken in hande, & brought to passe of olde tyme? That same wyll I do nowe also: waste, destroye, and brynge stronge cyties vnto heapes of stones.
37:27	For theyr inhabitatours shalbe lyke lame men, brought in feare and confounded. They shalbe lyke the grasse & grene herbes in the felde, lyke the hey vpon house toppes, that withereth afore it be growne vp.
37:28	I knowe thy wayes, thy goinge forth and thy commynge home, yee, & thy madnesse agaynst me.
37:29	Therfore thy furiousnes against me, and thy pryde is come before me. I wyll put my rynge in thy nose, and my brydle byt in the chawes of the, and turne the about, euen the same waye thou camest.
37:30	I wyll geue the also this token (O Hezekia) thys yere shalt thou eate such as groweth of yt selfe & the secunde yeare, that which springeth agayne of the same, and in the thyrde yeare, ye shall sowe & reape, yee, ye shall plante vineyardes, and enioye the frutes therof.
37:31	And soche of the house of Iuda as are escaped, shall come together, and the remnaunt shall take rote beneth, and bringe forth frute aboue.
37:32	For the escaped shall go out of Ierusalem, and the remnaunt from the mounte Syon. And thys shall the gelousy of the Lorde of Hostes bring to passe.
37:33	Therfore thus sayeth the Lorde, concernynge the kynge of the Assyrians. He shall not come into this cyte, and shal shote no arowe into it, there shal no shilde hurt it, nether shal they cast ditches about it.
37:34	The same waye that he came, he shal retourne, and not come at thys cytie, sayeth the Lorde.
37:35	And I wyll kepe and saue the cytie (sayeth he) for myne awne, and for my seruaunte Dauids sake.
37:36	Thus the angel went forth, and slewe of the Assyrians hoost, an hundred fourescore and fyue thousande. And when men arose vp early in the mornynge. Beholde, they were slayne, and all laye full of deed bodyes.
37:37	So Sennaherib the kyng of the Assyrians brake vp, & dwelt at Niniue.
37:38	Afterwarde it chaunsed, as he prayed in the temple of Nesrah his God, that Adramalech and Sarazer hys awne sonnes slewe him with the sweard, and fled into the lande of Armenia. And Asar hadon his sonne raygned in his steade.
