Jeremiah - Chapter: 3

>
3:1They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man's, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted? but thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD.
3:2Lift up thine eyes unto the high places, and see where thou hast not been lien with. In the ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness.
3:3Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain; and thou hadst a whore's forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed.
3:4Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth?
3:5Will he reserve his anger for ever? will he keep it to the end? Behold, thou hast spoken and done evil things as thou couldest.
3:6The LORD said also unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot.
3:7And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it.
3:8And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.
3:9And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and with stocks.
3:10And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah hath not turned unto me with her whole heart, but feignedly, saith the LORD.
3:11And the LORD said unto me, The backsliding Israel hath justified herself more than treacherous Judah.
3:12Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the LORD; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the LORD, and I will not keep anger for ever.
3:13Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the LORD thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the LORD.
3:14Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:
3:15And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.
3:16And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more.
3:17At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the LORD; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart.
3:18In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers.
3:19But I said, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of nations? and I said, Thou shalt call me, My father; and shalt not turn away from me.
3:20Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD.
3:21A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel: for they have perverted their way, and they have forgotten the LORD their God.
3:22Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God.
3:23Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel.
3:24For shame hath devoured the labour of our fathers from our youth; their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.
3:25We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.

3:1It is seid comunli, If a man forsakith his wijf, and sche go awei fro hym, and be weddid to an othere hosebonde, whether he schal turne ayen more to hir? whether thilke womman schal not be defoulid, and maad vncleene? Forsothe thou hast do fornycacioun with many loueris; netheles turne thou ayen to me, `seith the Lord, and Y schal resseyue thee.
3:2Reise thin iyen in to streiyt, and se, where thou art not cast doun. Thou hast setun in weies, abidynge hem as a theef in wildirnesse, and thou hast defoulid the erthe in thi fornicaciouns and in thi malices.
3:3Wherfor the dropis of reynes weren forbodun, and no late reyn was. The forhed of a womman hoore is maad to thee; thou noldist be aschamed.
3:4Nameli fro this tyme forth clepe thou me, Thou art my fadir, the ledere of my virginyte.
3:5Whether thou schalt be wrooth with outen ende, ether schalt contynue in to the ende? Lo! thou hast spoke, and hast do yuels, and thou were myyti. And for wordis of penaunce thou blasfemydist bi wordis of pride; and thou fillidist thin yuel thouyt, and schewidist thi strengthe ayens thi hosebonde, that thou maist do that thing that thou tretidist bi word.
3:6And the Lord seide to me, in the daies of Josie, the kyng, Whether thou hast seyn what thing the aduersarie, Israel, hath do? Sche yede to hir silf on ech hiy hil, and vndur ech tre ful of boowis, and dide fornycacioun there.
3:7And Y seide, whanne sche hadde do alle these thingis, Turne thou ayen to me; and sche turnede not ayen. And hir sistir, Juda, brekere of the lawe,
3:8siy, that for the aduersarie, Israel, dide auowtrie, Y hadde left hir, and Y hadde youe to hir a libel of forsakyng; and Juda, hir sistir, brekere of the lawe, dredde not, but also sche yede, and dide fornycacioun.
3:9And bi liytnesse of hir fornicacioun sche defoulide the erthe, and dide auowtrie with a stoon, and with a tree.
3:10And in alle these thingis hir sistir, Juda, brekere of the lawe, turnede not ayen to me, in al hir herte, but in a leesyng, seith the Lord God.
3:11And the Lord seide to me, The aduersarie, Israel, hath iustified hir soule, in comparisoun of Juda, brekere of the lawe.
3:12Go thou, and crye these wordis ayens the north; and thou schalt seie, Thou aduersarie, Israel, turne ayen, seith the Lord, and Y schal not turne awei my face fro you; for Y am hooli, seith the Lord, and Y schal not be wrooth with outen ende.
3:13Netheles knowe thou thi wickidnesse; for thou hast trespassid ayens thi Lord God, and thou hast spred abrood thi weies to aliens vndur ech tre ful of bowis; and thou herdist not my vois, seith the Lord.
3:14Be ye conuertid, sones, turnynge ayen, seith the Lord, for Y am youre hosebonde; and Y schal take you oon of a citee, and tweyne of a kynrede, and Y schal lede you in to Sion;
3:15and Y schal yyue to you scheepherdis after myn herte, and thei schulen feede you with kunnyng and teching.
3:16And whanne ye schulen be multiplied, and encreesse in the lond, in tho daies, seith the Lord, thei schulen no more seie, The arke of testament of the Lord; nether it schal stie on the herte, nether thei schulen thenke on it, nether it schal be visitid, nether it schal be ferthere.
3:17In that tyme thei schulen clepe Jerusalem The seete of the Lord, and alle hethene men schulen be gaderid togidere to it, in the name of the Lord, in Jerusalem; and thei schulen not go aftir the schrewidnesse of her worste herte.
3:18In tho daies the hous of Juda schal go to the hous of Israel; and thei schulen come togidere fro the lond of the north to the lond which Y yaf to youre fadris.
3:19Forsothe Y seide, Hou schal Y sette thee among sones, and schal yyue to thee a desirable lond, a ful cleer eritage of the oostis of hethene men? And Y seide, Thou schalt clepe me fadir, and thou schalt not ceesse to entre aftir me.
3:20But as if a womman dispisith hir louyere, so the hous of Israel dispiside me, seith the Lord.
3:21A vois is herd in weies, the weping and yellyng of the sones of Israel; for thei maden wickid her weie, thei foryaten her Lord God.
3:22Be ye conuertid, sones, turnynge ayen, and Y schal heele youre turnyngis awei. Lo! we comen to thee; for thou art oure Lord God.
3:23Verili litil hillis weren lieris, the multitude of mounteyns was fals; verili in oure Lord God is the helthe of Israel.
3:24Schenschipe eete the trauel of oure fadris, fro oure yongthe; schenschipe eet the flockis of hem, and the droues of hem, the sones of hem, and the douytris of hem.
3:25We schulen slepe in oure schenschipe, and oure sclaundir schal hile vs; for we synneden to oure Lord God, bothe we and oure fadris, fro oure yongthe `til to this dai; and we herden not the vois of oure Lord God.

3:1Comenly, when a man putteth awaye his wyfe, and she goeth from him & marieth with another, then the questyon is: shulde he resorte vnto her eny more after that? Is not this felde then defyled and vncleane? But as for the, thou hast played the harlot with many louers, yet turne agayne to me, sayeth the Lorde.
3:2Lyft vp thyne eyes vnto the hilaulters & loke, yf thou be not defyled with whoredome. Thou hast wayted for them in the stretes, and as a murtherer in the wyldernesse. Thorowe thy whordome & shamefull blasphemyes, is the lande defyled.
3:3This is the cause, that the rayne & eueninge dewe hath ceased. Thou hast gotten the an whores forehead, and wilt not be ashamed.
3:4Els woldest thou saye vnto me: O my father, thou art he that hast brought me vp, & led me fro my youth:
3:5Wylt thou then put me awaye, & cast me of for euer? Or wilt thou withdrawe thy selfe cleane fro me? Neuertheles, thou speakest soch wordes, but thou art euer doinge worse and worse.
3:6The Lorde sayde also vnto me: in the tyme of Iosiah the kynge: Hast thou sene what that rebellyon Israel hath done? howe she hath runne vp vpon all the hylles, and amonge all thick trees, and there played the harlot.
3:7hast thou sene also (when she had done all thys) howe I sayde vnto her: that she shulde turne agayne vnto me, & yet she is not returned? Iuda that vnfaythfull syster of hers also sawe thys:
3:8Namely, that after I had well sene the aduoutrye of the shrynckyng harlot Israel, I put her awaye, and gaue her a byll of deuorcement. For all this, her vnfaythfull syster Iuda was not ashamed, but went backe & played the whore also:
3:9Yee, and the noyse of her whordome hath defyled the whole lande. For she hath commytted fornycacyon wyth stones and stockes.
3:10Neuerthelesse, her vnfaythfull syster Iuda is not turned vnto me agayne wyth her whole herte, but faynedly, sayeth the Lorde.
3:11And the Lorde sayde vnto me: The backslyder Israell is more ryghtuous, then the vnfaythfull Iuda:
3:12& therfore go preache these wordes towarde the north, and saye: Thou disobedient Israell, turne agayne (sayeth the Lorde) & I wyll not let my wrathe fall vpon you, for I am mercyfull (sayeth the Lorde) & I wyll not alwaye beare displeasure agaynst the:
3:13but this I will, that thou knowe thy greate blasphemy: Namely, that thou hast vnfaythfully forsaken the Lorde thy God, & hast made thy selfe partake of straunge Goddes vnder all grene trees, but hast had no wyll to heare my voyce, sayeth the Lorde.
3:14O ye disobedient chyldren, turne agayne sayeth the Lorde: & I wyll be maryed wyth you. For I wyll take one out of the cytie, & two out of one generacyon, from amonge you, and brynge you in to Syon:
3:15and wyll geue you herdmen after myne awne mynde, which shall fede you with learnynge and wysdome.
3:16Moreouer, when ye be increased and multiplyed in the lande, then (sayeth the Lorde) there shall no more boast be made of the arcke of the Lordes testament: No man shall thinke vpon it, nether shall any man make mencyon of it: for from thence forth it shall nether be vysyted, ner honoured with gyftes.
3:17Then shall Ierusalem be called the Lordes seate, & all Heathen shalbe gathered vnto it, for the name of the Lordes sake, which shalbe set vp at Ierusalem. And from the tyme forth, they shall folowe no more the ymaginacyon of their awne frowarde herte.
3:18Then those that be of the house of Iuda, shall go vnto the house of Israell: & they shall come together out of the North, into the same lande that I haue geuen your fathers.
3:19I haue shewed also, howe I toke the vp beynge but a childe & gaue the a pleasaunt lande for thyne herytage, yee, & a goodly Hoste of the Heathen, & howe I commaunded the, that thou shuldest call me father only, and not to shryncke fro me.
3:20But lyke as a woman vnfaythfully fayleth her husbande, so are ye vnfaythfull vnto me (O ye house of Israel) sayeth the Lorde.
3:21And therfore the voyce of the chyldren of Israel was herde on hye, wepinge and waylinge: for they haue defyled their waye, and forgotten God their Lorde.
3:22O ye disobedient chyldren, turne agayne (sayinge: lo, we are thyne, for thou art the Lorde oure God:) And so shall I heale youre backturninges.
3:23Truly vaynly trusteth he for helth that loketh for it in the hylles and in vayne is it sought in the multitude of the mountaynes, but the health of Israell standeth only vpon God oure Lorde.
3:24Confusyon hath deuoured oure fathers laboure from oure youth vp: yee, their shepe and bullockes, their sonnes and daughters.
3:25So do we also slepe in oure confusyon, and shame couereth vs: for we & oure fathers from oure youth vp vnto this daye haue synned agaynst the Lorde oure God, and haue not obeyed the voyce of the Lorde oure God.
