| 18:1 | The word which came to Ieremiah from ye Lord saying, |
| 18:2 | Arise and go downe to the potters house, & there I will cause thee to heare my words. |
| 18:3 | Then I went downe to the potters house, and behold, hee wrought a worke on the wheeles. |
| 18:4 | And the vessell that he made of clay, was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it againe another vessell as seemed good to the potter to make it. |
| 18:5 | Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, |
| 18:6 | O house of Israel, cannot I doe with you as this potter, saith the Lord ? Behold, as the clay is in the potters hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel. |
| 18:7 | At what instant I shall speake concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdome, to plucke vp and to pull downe, and to destroy it. |
| 18:8 | If that nation against whom I haue pronounced, turne from their euill, I will repent of the euill that I thought to doe vnto them. |
| 18:9 | And at what instant I shall speake concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdome to build and to plant it; |
| 18:10 | If it doe euill in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good; wherewith I saide I would benefite them. |
| 18:11 | Now therefore goe to, speake to the men of Iudah, and to the inhabitants of Ierusalem, saying, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I frame euill against you, and deuise a deuice against you: returne ye now euery one from his euill way, and make your waies and your doings good. |
| 18:12 | And they said, There is no hope, but wee will walke after our owne deuices, and wee will euery one doe the imagination of his euil heart. |
| 18:13 | Therefore thus saith the Lord, Aske ye now among the heathen, who hath heard such things? the Uirgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing. |
| 18:14 | Will a man leaue the snow of Lebanon which commeth from the rocke of the fielde? or shall the colde flowing waters that come from another place, be forsaken? |
| 18:15 | Because my people hath forgotten mee, they haue burnt incense to vanitie, and they haue caused them to stumble in their waies from the ancient paths, to walke in paths, in a way not cast vp, |
| 18:16 | To make their land desolate and a perpetuall hissing: euery one that passeth thereby shall bee astonished, and wagge his head. |
| 18:17 | I will scatter them as with an East winde before the enemie: I will shew them the backe, and not the face, in the day of their calamitie. |
| 18:18 | Then said they, Come, and let vs deuise deuices against Ieremiah: for the Law shall not perish from the Priest, nor counsell from the wise, nor the word from the prophet: Come and let vs smite him with the tongue, and let vs not giue heede to any of his wordes. |
| 18:19 | Giue heed to me, O Lord, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me. |
| 18:20 | Shall euill bee recompensed for good? for they haue digged a pit for my soule: remember that I stood before thee to speake good for them, and to turne away thy wrath from them. |
| 18:21 | Therefore deliuer vp their children to the famine, and powre out their blood by the force of the sword, and let their wiues be bereaued of their children and be widowes, and let their men be put to death, let their yong men be slaine by the sword in battell. |
| 18:22 | Let a crie bee heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troupe suddenly vpon them, for they haue digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet. |
| 18:23 | Yet Lord thou knowest all their counsell against me to slay mee: forgiue not their iniquitie, neither blot out their sinne from thy sight, but let them bee ouerthrowen before thee, deale thus with them in the time of thine anger. |
| 18:1 | The worde which came to Ieremiah from the Lord, saying, |
| 18:2 | Arise, and go downe into the potters house, and there shall I shewe thee my words. |
| 18:3 | Then I went downe to the potters house, and behold, he wrought a worke on the wheeles. |
| 18:4 | And the vessell that he made of clay, was broken in the hand of the potter. so he returned, and made it another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. |
| 18:5 | Then the worde of the Lord came vnto me, saying, |
| 18:6 | O house of Israel, cannot I doe with you as this potter, sayth the Lord? beholde, as the clay is in the potters hande, so are you in mine hande, O house of Israel. |
| 18:7 | I will speake suddenly against a nation or against a kingdome to plucke it vp, and to roote it out and to destroy it. |
| 18:8 | But if this nation, against whom I haue pronounced, turne from their wickednesse, I will repent of the plague that I thought to bring vpon them. |
| 18:9 | And I wil speake suddenly concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdome to builde it and to plant it. |
| 18:10 | But if it do euill in my sight and heare not my voyce, I will repent of ye good that I thought to do for them. |
| 18:11 | Speake thou nowe therefore vnto the men of Iudah, and to the inhabitants of Ierusalem, saying, Thus saith ye Lord, Behold, I prepare a plague for you, and purpose a thing against you: returne you therefore euery one from his euill way, and make your wayes and your workes good. |
| 18:12 | But they sayde desperately, Surely wee will walke after our owne imaginations, and doe euery man after the stubburnnesse of his wicked heart. |
| 18:13 | Therefore thus saith the Lord, Aske now among the heathen, who hath heard such thinges? the virgin of Israel hath done very filthily. |
| 18:14 | Will a man forsake the snowe of Lebanon, which commeth from the rocke of the fielde? or shall the colde flowing waters, that come from another place, be forsaken? |
| 18:15 | Because my people hath forgotten me, and haue burnt incense to vanitie, and their prophets haue caused them to stumble in their wayes from the auncient wayes, to walke in the pathes and way that is not troden, |
| 18:16 | To make their land desolate and a perpetual derision, so that euery one that passeth thereby, shalbe astonished and wagge his head, |
| 18:17 | I will scatter them with an East winde before the enemie: I will shewe them the backe, and not the face in the day of their destruction. |
| 18:18 | Then sayde they, Come, and let vs imagine some deuice against Ieremiah: for the Lawe shall not perish from the Priest, nor counsell from the wise, nor the worde from the Prophet: come, and let vs smite him with the tongue, and let vs not giue heede to any of his words. |
| 18:19 | Hearken vnto mee, O Lord, and heare the voyce of them that contend with me. |
| 18:20 | Shall euill be recompensed for good? for they haue digged a pit for my soule: remember that I stood before thee, to speake good for the, and to turne away thy wrath from them. |
| 18:21 | Therefore, deliuer vp their children to famine, and let them drop away by the force of the sworde, and let their wiues be robbed of their children, and be widowes: and let their husbands be put to death, and let their yong men be slayne by the sword in the battell. |
| 18:22 | Let the crye bee heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring an hoste suddenly vpon them: for they haue digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feete. |
| 18:23 | Yet Lord thou knowest al their counsel against me tendeth to death: forgiue not their iniquitie, neither put out their sinne from thy sight, but let them be ouerthrowen before thee: deale thus with them in the time of thine anger. |
| 18:1 | This is another communicacion, that God had with Ieremy, saying: |
| 18:2 | Aryse, and goo downe into the Potters house, and there shall I tell the more of my mynde. |
| 18:3 | Now when I cam to the Potters house, I founde hym makynge his worcke vpon a whele. |
| 18:4 | The vessell that the Potter made of claye, brake amonge his handes: So be beganne a new, and made another vessel accordynge to his mynde. |
| 18:5 | Then sayde the Lorde thus vnto me. |
| 18:6 | Maye not I do with you, as this Potter doth, O ye house of Israel, sayeth the Lorde? Beholde, ye house of Israel: ye are in my hande, euen as the claye in the Potters hande. |
| 18:7 | When I take in hande to rote out, to destroye, or to waste awaye eny people or kyngdom |
| 18:8 | yf that people (agaynst whom I haue thus deuysed) conuerte from theyr wyckednes: I repente of the plage, that I deuysed to brynge vpon them. |
| 18:9 | Agayne, when I take in hande, to buylde, or to plante a people or a kyngdom: |
| 18:10 | yf the same people do euell before me, and heare not my voyce: I repente of the good, that I deuise to do for them: |
| 18:11 | Speake now therfore vnto whole Iuda: and to them that dwell at Ierusalem. Thus sayeth the Lorde: Beholde, I am deuisyng a plage for you, and am takynge a thing in hande agaynst you. Therfore let euery man turne from his euell waye, take vpon you the thynge that is good, and do right. |
| 18:12 | But they sayde. Nomore of this we wyll folowe oure awne ymaginacions, and do euery man accordynge to the wylfulnesse of his awne mynde. |
| 18:13 | Therfore thus sayeth the Lorde. Aske amonge the Heathen, yf eny man hath herde soch horryble thynges, as the daughter of Sion hath done. |
| 18:14 | Shall not the snowe (that melteth vpon the stony rockes of Libanus) moysten the feldes? Or maye the sprynges of waters be so grauen awaye, that they runne nomore, geue moystnesse, ner make frutefull? |
| 18:15 | But my people hath so forgotten me, that they haue made sacryfyce vnto vayne Goddes. And theyr prophetes make them fal in theyr wayes from the auncyent pathes, and to go into a fote waye not vsed to be troden of iust men. |
| 18:16 | Where thorowe they haue brought their lande into an euerlastyng wildernesse & scorne. So that whosoeuer trauayleth therby, shalbe abashed, & wagge theyr heades. |
| 18:17 | With an East wynde wyll I scatre them, before their enemie. And when their destruccion commeth, I wyll turne my backe vpon them, but not my face. |
| 18:18 | Then sayde they come, let vs ymagen somthynge agaynst this Ieremye. For the prestes shall not be destitute of the lawe, nether shall the wysemen de destitute of councel, ner the prophetes destitute of the worde of God. Come, and let vs smyte him with the tong, and let vs marke all his wordes. |
| 18:19 | Consydre me, O Lord, and heare the voyce of myne enemies |
| 18:20 | shall they recompence euell for good? for they haue digged a pit for my soule. Remembre, howe that I stode before the, to speake good for them, & to turne awaye thy wrath from them. |
| 18:21 | Therfore let their children dye of hunger, and let them be oppressed wyth the swearde. Let their wiues be robbed of their children, and become wyddowes: let their husbandes be slayne, let their yonge men be kylled with the swearde in the felde. |
| 18:22 | Lett the noyse be herde out of their houses, when the murtherer commeth sodenly vpon them. For they haue dygged a pyt to take me, & layed snares for my fete. |
| 18:23 | Yet Lorde, thou knowest all their councell, that they haue deuised, to slaye me. Forgeue not their wyckednes, and let not their sinne be put out of thy syght: but let them be iudged before the as the gyltie: This shalt thou do vnto them in the tyme of thy indignacion. |
