| 18:1 | This is another communicacion, that God had with Ieremy, saying: |
| 18:2 | Aryse, and goo downe into the Potters house, and there shall I tell the more of my mynde. |
| 18:3 | Now when I cam to the Potters house, I founde hym makynge his worcke vpon a whele. |
| 18:4 | The vessell that the Potter made of claye, brake amonge his handes: So be beganne a new, and made another vessel accordynge to his mynde. |
| 18:5 | Then sayde the Lorde thus vnto me. |
| 18:6 | Maye not I do with you, as this Potter doth, O ye house of Israel, sayeth the Lorde? Beholde, ye house of Israel: ye are in my hande, euen as the claye in the Potters hande. |
| 18:7 | When I take in hande to rote out, to destroye, or to waste awaye eny people or kyngdom |
| 18:8 | yf that people (agaynst whom I haue thus deuysed) conuerte from theyr wyckednes: I repente of the plage, that I deuysed to brynge vpon them. |
| 18:9 | Agayne, when I take in hande, to buylde, or to plante a people or a kyngdom: |
| 18:10 | yf the same people do euell before me, and heare not my voyce: I repente of the good, that I deuise to do for them: |
| 18:11 | Speake now therfore vnto whole Iuda: and to them that dwell at Ierusalem. Thus sayeth the Lorde: Beholde, I am deuisyng a plage for you, and am takynge a thing in hande agaynst you. Therfore let euery man turne from his euell waye, take vpon you the thynge that is good, and do right. |
| 18:12 | But they sayde. Nomore of this we wyll folowe oure awne ymaginacions, and do euery man accordynge to the wylfulnesse of his awne mynde. |
| 18:13 | Therfore thus sayeth the Lorde. Aske amonge the Heathen, yf eny man hath herde soch horryble thynges, as the daughter of Sion hath done. |
| 18:14 | Shall not the snowe (that melteth vpon the stony rockes of Libanus) moysten the feldes? Or maye the sprynges of waters be so grauen awaye, that they runne nomore, geue moystnesse, ner make frutefull? |
| 18:15 | But my people hath so forgotten me, that they haue made sacryfyce vnto vayne Goddes. And theyr prophetes make them fal in theyr wayes from the auncyent pathes, and to go into a fote waye not vsed to be troden of iust men. |
| 18:16 | Where thorowe they haue brought their lande into an euerlastyng wildernesse & scorne. So that whosoeuer trauayleth therby, shalbe abashed, & wagge theyr heades. |
| 18:17 | With an East wynde wyll I scatre them, before their enemie. And when their destruccion commeth, I wyll turne my backe vpon them, but not my face. |
| 18:18 | Then sayde they come, let vs ymagen somthynge agaynst this Ieremye. For the prestes shall not be destitute of the lawe, nether shall the wysemen de destitute of councel, ner the prophetes destitute of the worde of God. Come, and let vs smyte him with the tong, and let vs marke all his wordes. |
| 18:19 | Consydre me, O Lord, and heare the voyce of myne enemies |
| 18:20 | shall they recompence euell for good? for they haue digged a pit for my soule. Remembre, howe that I stode before the, to speake good for them, & to turne awaye thy wrath from them. |
| 18:21 | Therfore let their children dye of hunger, and let them be oppressed wyth the swearde. Let their wiues be robbed of their children, and become wyddowes: let their husbandes be slayne, let their yonge men be kylled with the swearde in the felde. |
| 18:22 | Lett the noyse be herde out of their houses, when the murtherer commeth sodenly vpon them. For they haue dygged a pyt to take me, & layed snares for my fete. |
| 18:23 | Yet Lorde, thou knowest all their councell, that they haue deuised, to slaye me. Forgeue not their wyckednes, and let not their sinne be put out of thy syght: but let them be iudged before the as the gyltie: This shalt thou do vnto them in the tyme of thy indignacion. |
| 18:1 | The word that was maad of the Lord to Jeremye, |
| 18:2 | and seide, Rise thou, and go doun in to the hous of a pottere, and there thou schalt here my wordis. |
| 18:3 | And Y yede doun in to the hous of a pottere, and lo! he made a werk on a wheel. |
| 18:4 | And the vessel was distried, which he made of clei with hise hondis; and he turnede it, and made it another vessel, as it pleside in hise iyen to make. |
| 18:5 | And the word of the Lord was maad to me, |
| 18:6 | and he seide, Whether as this pottere doith, Y mai not do to you, the hous of Israel? seith the Lord. Lo! as cley is in the hond of a pottere, so ye, the hous of Israel, ben in myn hond. |
| 18:7 | Sudenli Y schal speke ayens a folk, and ayens a rewme, that Y drawe out, and distrie, and leese it. |
| 18:8 | If thilke folk doith penaunce of his yuel, which Y spak ayens it, also Y schal do penaunce on the yuel, which Y thouyte to do to it. |
| 18:9 | And Y schal speke sudenli of a folk, and of a rewme, that Y bilde, and plaunte it. |
| 18:10 | If it doith yuel bifore myn iyen, that it here not my vois, Y schal do penaunce on the good which Y spak, that Y schulde do to it. |
| 18:11 | Now therfor seie thou to a man of Juda, and to the dwellere of Jerusalem, and seie, The Lord seith these thingis, Lo! Y make yuel ayens you, and Y thenke a thouyte ayens you; ech man turne ayen fro his yuel weie, and dresse ye youre weies and youre studies. |
| 18:12 | Whiche seiden, We han dispeirid, for we schulen go after oure thouytis, and we schulen do ech man the schrewidnesse of his yuel herte. |
| 18:13 | Therfor the Lord seith these thingis, Axe ye hethene men, who herde siche orible thingis, whiche the virgyn of Israel hath do greetli? |
| 18:14 | Whether snow of the Liban schal fail fro the stoon of the feeld? ether coolde watris brekynge out, and fletynge doun moun be takun awei? |
| 18:15 | For my puple hath foryete me, and offriden sacrifices in veyn, and snaperiden in her weies, and in the pathis of the world, that thei yeden bi tho in a weie not trodun; |
| 18:16 | that the lond of hem schulde be in to desolacioun, and in to an hissyng euerlastinge; for whi ech that passith bi it, schal be astonyed, and schal moue his heed. |
| 18:17 | As a brennynge wynd Y schal scatere hem bifor the enemy; Y schal schewe to hem the bak and not the face, in the dai of the perdicioun of hem. |
| 18:18 | And thei seiden, Come ye, and thenke we thouytis ayens Jeremye; for whi the lawe schal not perische fro a preest, nether councel schal perische fro a wijs man, nether word schal perische fro a profete; come ye, and smyte we hym with tunge, and take we noon heede to alle the wordis of hym. |
| 18:19 | Lord, yyue thou tent to me, and here thou the vois of myn aduersaries. |
| 18:20 | Whether yuel is yoldun for good, for thei han diggid a pit to my soule; haue thou mynde, that Y stoode in thi siyt, to speke good for hem, and to turne awei thin indignacioun fro hem. |
| 18:21 | Therfor yyue thou the sones of hem in to hungur, and lede forth hem in to the hondis of swerd; the wyues of hem be maad with out children, and be maad widewis, and the hosebondis of hem be slayn bi deth; the yonge men of hem be persid togidere bi swerd in batel. |
| 18:22 | Cry be herd of the housis of hem, for thou schalt bringe sudenli a theef on hem; for thei diggiden a pit to take me, and hidden snaris to my feet. |
| 18:23 | But thou, Lord, knowist al the councel of hem ayens me in to deth; do thou not merci to the wickidnesse of hem, and the synne of hem be not doon awei fro thi face; be thei maad fallynge doun in thi siyt, in the tyme of thi stronge veniaunce; vse thou hem to othir thing than thei weren ordeyned. |
| 18:1 | This is another communicacion, that God had with Ieremy, sayenge: |
| 18:2 | Arise, and go downe in to the Potters house, and there shall I tell the more off my mynde. |
| 18:3 | Now when I came to the Potters house, I founde him makinge his worke vpon a whele. |
| 18:4 | The vessel that the Potter made off claye, brake amonge his hodes: So he beganne a new, and made a nother vessell, acordinge to his mynde. |
| 18:5 | Then sayde the LORDE thus vnto me: |
| 18:6 | Maye not I do wt you, as this Potter doth, O ye house off Israel? saieth the LORDE? Beholde, ye house off Israel: ye are in my honde, euen as the claye in the Potters honde. |
| 18:7 | When I take in honde to rote out, to destroye, or to waist awaye eny people or kigdome: |
| 18:8 | yff that people (agaynst whom I haue thus deuysed) couerte from their wickednes: Immediatly, I repente off the plage, that I deuysed to bringe vpon the. |
| 18:9 | Agayne: Whe I take in honde, to buylde, or to plante a people or a kingdome: |
| 18:10 | yff the same people do euell before me, and heare not my voyce: Immediatly, I repente of the good, that I deuysed to do for them. |
| 18:11 | Speake now therfore vnto whole Iuda, and to them that dwell at Ierusalem: Thus saieth the LORDE: Beholde, I am deuysinge a plage for you, and am takinge a thinge in honde agaynst you. Therfore, let euery man turne from his euell waye, take vpon you the thinge that is good, and do right. |
| 18:12 | But they saye: No more of this, we will folowe oure owne ymaginacions, and do euery ma acordinge to the wilfulnesse of his owne mynde. |
| 18:13 | Therfore thus saieth the LORDE: Axe amonge the Heithen, yf eny man hath herde soch horrible thinges, as the doughter of Sion hath done. |
| 18:14 | Shal not ye snowe (yt melteth vpon the stony rockes of Libanus) moysture the feldes? Or maye the springes off waters be so grauen awaye, that they runne nomore, geue moystnesse, ner make frutefull? |
| 18:15 | But my people hath so forgotten me, yt they haue made sacrifice vnto vayne goddes. And whyle they folowed their owne wayes they are come out of the hie strete, and gone in to a fote waye not vsed to be troden. |
| 18:16 | Where thorow they haue brought their londe in to an euerlastinge wildernesse and scorne: So yt who so euer trauayleth ther by, shalbe abashed, and wagge their heades. |
| 18:17 | With an East wynde will I scatre the, before their enemies. And when their destruction cometh, I will turne my backe vpo them, but not my face. |
| 18:18 | Then sayde they: come, let vs ymagin somthinge agaynst this Ieremy. Yee this dyd euen the prestes, to whom ye lawe was commytted: the Senatours, yt were the wysest: and the prophetes, which wanted not ye worde off God. Come (sayde they) let vs cut out his tuge, and let vs not regarde his wordes. |
| 18:19 | Considre me (o LORDE) and heare the voyce of myne enemies. |
| 18:20 | Do they not recompence euell for good, when they dygg a pyt for my soule? Remembre, how that I stode before the, to speake for the, ad to turne awaye thy wrath from them. |
| 18:21 | Therfore let their childre dye of hunger, and let them be oppressed with the swearde. Let their wyues be robbed of their childre, and become wyddowes: let their hu?bodes be slayne, let their yonge men be kylled with the swearde in the felde. |
| 18:22 | Let the noyse be herde out of their houses, when the murtherer cometh sodenly vpon them: For they haue digged a pit to take me, and layed snares for my fete. |
| 18:23 | Yet LORDE, thou knowest all their coucell, that they haue deuysed, to slaye me. And therfore forgeue them not their wickednes, and let not their synne be put out of thy sight: but let them be iudged before the as the giltie: This shalt thou do vnto the in ye tyme of thy indignacion. |
