Jeremiah - Chapter: 49

>
49:1As concerning the Ammonytes, thus the Lorde sayth: Hath Israel no children, or is he without an heyre? Why hath youre king then taken Gad in? Wherfore doth his people dwell in his cityes?
49:2Beholde therfore, the tyme commeth, sayth the Lorde, that I wyll bring a noyse of warre into Rabah of the Ammonites: and it shall be layed on a desolate heape: and her cityes brent vp: & the Israelites shalbe lordes ouer those that had them in possession afore, sayeth the Lorde.
49:3Hesebon shall mourne, for Ay shalbe roted out of the grounde, sayth the Lorde. The cityes of Rabah shall crye out, and gyrde them selues with sacke cloth: they shall mourne, & runne about the walles: for theyr king shalbe led awaye presoner: yee, his prestes and princes with hym.
49:4Wherfore trustest thou in the valley? thy valleye hath flowed awaye, O thou fearce daughter, & thynkest thou that thou art so safe, by reason of thy treasure, that no man shall come to the?
49:5Beholde, I will brynge a feare vpon the, sayth the Lorde God of hostes, from all those that be about the: so that ye shalbe scatered euery man from another, and a man shall gather them together agayne that be fled.
49:6But after that, I wyll bring the Ammonites also out of captiuyte agayne.
49:7Upon the Edomites hath the Lorde of hoostes spoken on thys maner: Is there nomore wysdome in Theman? Is there nomore good councell amonge his people? Is theyr wysdome then turned clene to naught?
49:8Gett you hence, turne youre backes, crepe downe into the deppe, O ye citesyns of Dedan. For I will bryng destruccion vpon Esau: yee, and the daye of hys visytatyon.
49:9If the grapegatherers came vpon the, shulde they not leaue some grapes? If the night robbers came vpon the, shulde they not take so moch as they thought were ynough?
49:10But I wyll make Esau bare, and discouer his secretes, so that he shall not be able to hyde them. Hys sede shalbe wasted awaye: yee, hys brethren and hys neyghbours, and he hym selfe shall not be lefte behynde.
49:11Thou shalt leaue thy fatherlesse children behynde the, and I wyll kepe them, and thy wyddowes shall take their comforte in me.
49:12For thus hath the Lorde spoken. Behold, they that men thought were vnmete to drinke of the cuppe, haue dronken with the fyrst: and thynkest thou then to be fre? No, no, thou shalt nether be quite nor fre: but thou must drinke also.
49:13For why? I haue sworne by my selfe, sayth the Lorde, that Bozrah shall become a wyldernes, an open shame, a laughyng stocke and cursynge: and all her cyties shalbe a continuall deserte.
49:14For I am perfectly informed of the Lorde that he hath sent a message allredy vnto the Heythen. Gather you together, and go forth agaynst them: make you ready to the battaylle:
49:15for lo, I wyll make the but small amonge the Heythen, and lytell regarded amonge men.
49:16Thy hye stomacke and the pryde of thy herte haue disceaued the, because thou wylt dwell in the holes of stony rockes, and haue the hye mountaynes in possession. Neuertheles, though thy neste were as hye as the aegles, yet wyll I cast the downe, sayeth the Lorde.
49:17Moreouer, Idumea shalbe a wildernes: whoso goth by it, shalbe abashed, and wonder at all her myserable plages.
49:18Lyke as Sodome, Gomor, and the cytyes that laye ther about were turned vp side downe, saith the Lord, so shall no body dwell in Idumea, and no man shall haue his habitation there.
49:19Behold, lyke as the lyon, so shall a destroyer come vp from the pleasaunt medowes of Iordane vnto the stronge dwelling place: & when I haue made him quiet, I will make him to fle from her: and all chosen men, will I set in araye agaynst her. Who is lyke vnto me? What is he that will stryue with me? What shepherde maye stande in my handes?
49:20Therfore, heare the councell of the Lorde, that he hath taken vpon Idumea: and hys purpose that he hath deuysed vpon the citesyns of Theman. The leest of the flocke shall teare them in peces, & loke what fayre thinge they haue, they shall make it waste, & them selues also.
49:21At the noyse of their fall, the earth shall quake the crye of their voyce shalbe heard vnto the redd see.
49:22Beholde, the enemye shall come and fle vp hither, like as it were an aegle, & sprede his winges vpon Bozrah. Then shall the hertes of the worthyes in Edom be as the hert of a woman trauelyng of chylde.
49:23Upon Damascus, Hemath and Arphad shall come confusion: for they shall heare euell tydinges: they shalbe tossed to and fro lyke the see that cannot stande styll.
49:24Damascus shalbe sore afrayed, and shall flee, tremblinge come vpon her. Sorowe & payne shall ouertake her as a woman trauelynge of chylde.
49:25But howe shuld so worshipfull & glorious a citye be forsaken?
49:26Heare therfore: her yonge men shall fall in the stretes, and all her men of warre shalbe taken awaye in that tyme, sayth the Lorde of hostes.
49:27I wyll kyndle a fyre in the walles of Damascus, which shall consume the palace of Benhadad.
49:28As for Cedar and the kingdom of Hazor, whom Nabuchodonosor the kyng of Babylon smote downe, the Lorde hath spoken thus vpon them: Aryse, and get you vp vnto Cedar, and destroye the people towarde the easte.
49:29Theyr tentes and theyr flockes shall they take awaye: yee, their hangynges and their vessels. Their camels also shal they carye awaye with them. They shall crye to them: Feare is on euery syde.
49:30Fle, get you sone awaye, creape into caues, that ye maye dwell there, O ye inhabiters of Hazor, saith the Lorde: for Nabuchodonosor the kynge of Babylon hath holden a councell concernynge you: and concluded his deuyce agaynst you.
49:31Aryse, and get you vp agaynst yonder ryche and careles people (sayeth the Lorde) which haue nether gates nor dore barres, but dwell alone.
49:32Their camels shalbe stollen, and the drones of theyr catell dryuen awaye. Moreouer, those wyll I scater towarde all the wyndes: and bringe them to destruccyon: yee, and that thorowe their awne familyers, sayth the Lorde.
49:33Hazor also shall be a dwellyng for dragons, and an euerlasting wildernes: so that no body shall dwell there: and no man shall haue there his habitation.
49:34These are the wordes that the Lorde spake to the prophete Ieremy, concerning Elam, in the begynninge of the raygne of Zedekiah kynge of Iuda.
49:35Thus sayeth the Lorde of hostes: Beholde, I wyll breake the bowe of Elam, and take awaye theyr strength:
49:36and vpon Elam I wyll bring the foure wyndes from the foure quarters of heauen, and will scater them agaynst the same foure windes. And there shalbe no people, but some of Elam shall fle vnto them.
49:37For I wyll cause Elam to be afrayed of theyr enemyes, and of them that seke theyr lyues: and wyll brynge vpon them the indygnation of my wrath, sayth the Lorde. And I wyll persecute them with the swearde, so longe tyll I haue brought them to naught.
49:38I wyll sett my throne in Elam, I wyll destroye both the kynge and the prynces from thence, sayth the Lorde.
49:39But in processe of tyme I wyll brynge Elam out of captiuyte agayne, sayth the Lorde.

49:1`Go ye to the sones of Amon. The Lord seith these thingis. Whether no sones ben of Israel, ether an eir is not to it? whi therfor weldide Melchon the eritage of Gad, and the puple therof dwellide in the citees of Gad?
49:2Lo! daies comen, seith the Lord, and Y schal make the gnaisting of batel herd on Rabath of the sones of Amon; and it schal be distried in to noise, and the vilagis therof schulen be brent with fier, and Israel schal welde hise welderis, seith the Lord.
49:3Yelle ye, Esebon, for Hay is distried; crie, ye douytris of Rabath, girde you with heiris, weile ye, and cumpasse bi heggis; for whi Melchon schal be lad in to passyng ouer, the prestis therof and princes therof togidere.
49:4What hast thou glorie in valeis? Thi valeis fleet awei, thou delicat douyter, that haddist trist in thi tresours, and seidist, Who schal come to me?
49:5Lo! Y schal bringe in drede on thee, seith the Lord God of oostis, God of Israel, of alle men that ben in thi cumpasse; and ye schulen be scaterid, ech bi hym silf, fro youre siyt, and noon schal be, that gadere hem that fleen.
49:6And after these thingis Y schal make the fleeris and prisoneris of the sones of Amon to turne ayen, seith the Lord.
49:7To Ydumee the Lord God of oostis seith these thingis. Whether wisdom is no more in Theman? Councel perischide fro sones, the wisdom of hem is maad vnprofitable.
49:8Fle ye, and turne ye backis; go doun in to a swolowe, ye dwelleris of Dedan, for Y haue brouyt the perdicioun of Esau on hym, the tyme of his visitacioun.
49:9If gadereris of grapis hadden come on thee, thei schulden haue left a clustre; if theues in the niyt, thei schulden haue rauyschid that that suffiside to hem.
49:10Forsothe Y haue vnhilid Esau, and Y haue schewid the hid thingis of hym, and he mai not mow be hid; his seed is distried, and hise britheren, and hise neiyboris, and it schal not be.
49:11Forsake thi fadirles children, and Y schal make hem to lyue, and thi widewis schulen hope in me.
49:12For the Lord seith these thingis, Lo! thei drynkynge schulen drynke, to whiche was no doom, that thei schulden drynke the cuppe. And `schalt thou be left as innocent? thou schalt not be innocent, but thou drynkynge schalt drynke.
49:13For Y swoor bi my silf, seith the Lord, that Bosra schal be in to wildirnesse, and in to schenschipe, and in to forsakyng, and in to cursyng; and alle the citees therof schulen be in to euerlastynge wildirnessis.
49:14I herde an heryng of the Lord, and Y am sent a messanger to hethene men; be ye gaderid togidere, and come ye ayens it, and rise we togidere in to batel.
49:15For lo! Y haue youe thee a litil oon among hethene men, despisable among men.
49:16Thi boost, and the pride of thin herte, hath disseyued thee, that dwellist in the caues of stoon, and enforsist to take the hiynesse of a litil hil; whanne thou as an egle hast reisid thi nest, fro thennus Y schal drawe thee doun, seith the Lord.
49:17And Ydumee schal be forsakun; ech man that schal passe bi it, schal wondre, and schal hisse on alle the woundis therof;
49:18as Sodom and Gommor is distried, and the niy citees therof, seith the Lord. A man schal not dwelle there, and the sone of man schal not enhabite it.
49:19Lo! as a lioun he schal stie, fro the pride of Jordan to the strong fairnesse; for Y schal make hym renne sudenli to it; and who schal be the chosun man, whom Y schal sette bifore hym? For who is lijk to me, and who schal suffre me? and who is this scheepherde, that schal ayenstonde my cheer?
49:20Therfor here ye the councel of the Lord, which he took of Edom, and his thouytis, whiche he thouyte of the dwelleris of Theman. If the litle of the floc caste not hem doun, if thei distrien not with hem the dwellyng of hem, ellis no man yyue credence to me.
49:21The erthe was mouyd of the vois of fallyng of hem; the cry of vois therof was herd in the reed see.
49:22Lo! as an egle he schal stie, and fle out, and he schal sprede abrood hise wynges on Bosra; and the herte of the strong men of Idumee schal be in that dai, as the herte of a womman trauelynge of child.
49:23To Damask. Emath is schent, and Arphath, for thei herden a ful wickid heryng; thei weren disturblid in the see, for angwisch thei miyten not haue reste.
49:24Damask was discoumfortid, it was turned in to fliyt; tremblyng took it, angwischis and sorewis helden it, as a womman trauelynge of child.
49:25How forsoken thei a preisable citee, the citee of gladnesse?
49:26Therfor the yonge men therof schulen falle in the stretis therof, and alle men of batel schulen be stille in that dai, seith the Lord of oostis.
49:27And Y schal kyndle fier in the wal of Damask, and it schal deuoure the bildyngis of Benadab.
49:28To Cedar, and to the rewme of Azor, which Nabugodonosor, kyng of Babiloyne, smoot, the Lord seith these thingis. Rise ye, and stie to Cedar, and distrie ye the sones of the eest.
49:29Thei schulen take the tabernaclis of hem, and the flockis of hem; thei schulen take to hem the skynnes of hem, and alle the vessels of hem, and the camels of hem; and thei schulen clepe on hem inward drede in cumpas.
49:30Fle ye, go ye awei greetli, ye that dwellen in Asor, sitte in swolewis, seith the Lord. For whi Nabugodonosor, kyng of Babiloyne, hath take councel ayens you, and he thouyte thouytis ayens you.
49:31Rise ye togidere, and stie ye to a pesible folk, and dwellinge tristili, seith the Lord; not doris nether barris ben to it, thei dwellen aloone.
49:32And the camels of hem schulen be in to rauyschyng, and the multitude of her beestis in to prey; and Y schal schatere hem in to ech wynd, that ben biclippid on the long heer, and bi ech coost of hem Y schal brynge perischyng on hem, seith the Lord.
49:33And Asor schal be in to a dwellyng place of dragouns; it schal be forsakun `til in to withouten ende; a man schal not dwelle there, nether the sone of man schal enhabite it.
49:34The word of the Lord that was maad to Jeremye, the profete, ayens Elam, in the bigynnyng of the rewme of Sedechie,
49:35kyng of Juda, and seide, The Lord of oostis, God of Israel, seith these thingis, Lo! Y schal breke the bowe of Elam, and Y schal take the strengthe of hem.
49:36And I schal bringe on Elam foure wyndis; fro foure coostis of heuene, and Y schal wyndewe hem in to alle these wyndis, and no folc schal be, to which the fleeris of Elam schulen not come.
49:37And Y schal make Elam for to drede bifore her enemyes, and in the siyt of men sekynge the lijf of hem; and Y schal brynge on hem yuel, the wraththe of my strong veniaunce, seith the Lord; and Y schal sende after hem a swerd, til Y waste hem.
49:38And Y schal sette my kyngis seete in Elam, and Y schal leese therof kyngis, and princes, seith the Lord.
49:39But in the laste daies Y schal make the prisoneris of Elam to turne ayen, seith the Lord.

49:1As concerninge the Ammonites, thus the LORDE saieth: Hath Israel no children, or is he without an heyre? Why hath youre kynge then taken Gad in? wherfore doth his people dwell in his cities?
49:2Beholde therfore, the tyme commeth (saieth ye LORDE) that I will brynge a noyse off warre into Rabath off the Ammonites. Lahel shalbe desolate, and hir cities brent vp: and the Israelites shall be lordes ouer those, that had the in possession a fore, saieth the LORDE.
49:3Hesebon shall mourne, for it shalbe roted out off the grounde, saieth the LORDE. The cities off Rabath shall crie out, and gyrde them selues with sack cloth: they shall mourne, and runne aboute the walles: for their kynge shall be led awaye presoner: yee his preestes and prynces with him.
49:4Wherfore trustest thou in the water streames, that flowe to and fro, o thou fearce doughter: and thynkest thou art so safe (by reason off thy treasure) that no man shal come to the?
49:5Beholde, I will brynge a feare vpon the, saieth the LORDE God off hoostes, from all those that be aboute the: so that ye shall be scatred euery man from another, and no ma shall gather them together agayne, that be fled.
49:6But after that, I will bringe the Ammonites also out off captyuyte agayne.
49:7Vpon the Edomites hath the LORDE off hoostes spoken on this maner: Is there nomore wy?dome in Theman? Is there nomore good councell amonge his people? Is their wy?dome then turned clene to naught?
49:8Get you hence, turne youre backes, crepe downe into the depe, O ye citesyns off Dedan. For I will bringe destructio vpon Esau, yee and the daye off his visitacion.
49:9Yff the grape gatherers came vpon the, shulde they not leaue some grapes? Yff the night robbers came vpon the, shulde they not take so moch, as they thought were ynough?
49:10But I will make Esau bare, and discouer his secretes, so that he shall not be able to hyde them. His sede shalbe waisted awaye, yee his brethren and his neghbours, ad he himselff shall not be left behinde.
49:11Thou shalt leaue thy fatherlesse children behinde the, and I will kepe them and thy wydowes shall take their comforth in me.
49:12For thus hath the LORDE spoken: Beholde, they that men thought were vnmete to drinke of the cuppe, haue dronken with the first: and thynkest thou then to be fre? No, no: thou shalt nether be quyte no fre, but thou must drynke also:
49:13For why, I haue sworne by my selff (saieth the LORDE) that Bosra shall become a wyldernesse, an open shame, a laughinge stocke and cursynge: and hir cities shalbe a continuall deserte.
49:14For I am perfectly infourmed of the LORDE, that he hath sent a message all ready vnto the Hiethen. Gather you together, and go forth agaynst them: make you ready to the battayle,
49:15for lo: I will make the but small amonge the Heithen, and litle regarded amonge men.
49:16Thy hie stomack & the pryde of thy herte haue disceaued ye, because thou wilt dwell in the holes of stony rockes, and haue the hie mountaynes in possession. Neuertheles though thy nest were as hie as the Aegles, yet wil I cast the downe, saieth the LORDE.
49:17Morouer Idumea shall be a wildernesse: who so goeth by it, shalbe abashed, and wondre at all hir miserable plages.
49:18Like as Sodom, Gomor and the cities that laye there aboute, were turned vpsyde downe (saieth ye LORDE) so shal no body dwell in Idumea, and no man shal haue his habitacion there.
49:19Beholde, like as the Lyon cometh vp from the pleasaunt medowes of Iordane vnto ye grene pastures of Etha, so wil I dryue him, & make him runne agaynst her. But who is the yonge man that I will ordene therto? Who is like, vnto me? What is he that will stryue with me? What shepherde maye stonde in my hondes?
49:20Therfore heare the councell of the LORDE, that he hath taken vpon Idumea: & his purpose, that he hath deuysed vpon the citesyns of Theman: The leest of the flocke shal teare them in peces, & loke what fayre thynge they haue, they shal make it waist, & them selues also.
49:21At the noyse of their fall ye earth shal quake, the crie of their voyce shalbe herde vnto the reed see.
49:22Beholde, ye enemie shall come and fle vp hither, like as it were an Aegle, & sprede his wynges vpon Bosra. Then shal the hertes of the worthies in Edom be as the herte of a woman trauelinge of childe.
49:23Vpon Damascus, Hemath and Arphad shall come confucion, for they shall heare euell tydinges: they shal be tossed to and fro like the see that can not stonde still.
49:24Damascus shalbe sore afrayde, & shal fle, tremblinge shal come vpon her. Sorowe and payne shal ouer take her as a woman trauelinge of childe.
49:25But how shulde so worshipfull and glorious a cite be forsaken?
49:26Heare therfore: hir yonge men shal fall in the stretes, and all hir men of warre shal be take awaye in that tyme, saieth the LORDE of hoostes.
49:27I will kyndle a fyre in the walles of Damascus, which shal cosume the palace of Benadad.
49:28As for Cedar and the kyngdome of Hasor, whom Nabuchodonosor the kynge of Babilon smote downe, the LORDE hath spoken thus vpon them: Arise, and get you vp vnto Cedar, and destroye the people towarde the easte.
49:29Their tentes and their flockes shal they take awaye, yee their hanginges and their vessell. Their Camels also shall they carie awaye with them. They shall come aboute them on euery syde with a fearfull crie.
49:30Fle, get you soone awaye, crepe in to caues, that ye maye dwell there: O ye inhabitours of Hasor, saieth the LORDE: for Nabuchodonosor ye kinge of Babilon hath holden a councel concernynge you, & concluded his deuyce agaynst you.
49:31Arise, & get you vp agaynst yonder rich & carelesse people (saieth the LORDE) which haue nether gates ner dore barres, & that dwell not together.
49:32Their Camels shalbe stollen, & the droues of their catell dryuen awaye. Morouer, these that be shauen wil I scatre towarde all the wyndes, & bringe them to destruction: Yee & that thorow their owne familiers, saieth the LORDE.
49:33Hasor also shall be a dwellinge for Dragons, and an euerlastinge wildernesse: so that no body shal dwell there, and no man shal haue there his habitacion.
49:34These are the wordes, that the LORDE spake to the prophet Ieremy concernynge Elam, in the begynnynge of the reigne of Sedechias kinge of Iuda.
49:35Thus saieth the LORDE of hoostes: Beholde, I wil breake the bowe of Elam, and take awaye their strength:
49:36aud vpon Elam I wil bringe the foure wyndes from ye foure quarters of heauen, & wil scatre them agaynst the same foure wyndes. And there shal be no people, but some of Elam shal fle vnto them.
49:37For I wil cause Elam be afrayed of their enemies, & of them that seke their lyues: & wil bringe vpo them the indignacion of my wrath, saieth the LORDE. And I wil persecute them with the swearde so longe til I haue brought them to naught.
49:38I wil set my stole in Elam, I wil destroye both the kinge & ye prynces from thence, saieth the LORDE.
49:39But in processe of tyme, I wil bringe Elam out of captiuyte agayne, saieth the LORDE.
