Ezekiel - Chapter: 20

>
20:1And it came to pass in the seventh year, in the fifth month, the tenth day of the month, that certain of the elders of Israel came to enquire of the LORD, and sat before me.
20:2Then came the word of the LORD unto me, saying,
20:3Son of man, speak unto the elders of Israel, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Are ye come to enquire of me? As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I will not be enquired of by you.
20:4Wilt thou judge them, son of man, wilt thou judge them? cause them to know the abominations of their fathers:
20:5And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the day when I chose Israel, and lifted up mine hand unto the seed of the house of Jacob, and made myself known unto them in the land of Egypt, when I lifted up mine hand unto them, saying, I am the LORD your God;
20:6In the day that I lifted up mine hand unto them, to bring them forth of the land of Egypt into a land that I had espied for them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands:
20:7Then said I unto them, Cast ye away every man the abominations of his eyes, and defile not yourselves with the idols of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.
20:8But they rebelled against me, and would not hearken unto me: they did not every man cast away the abominations of their eyes, neither did they forsake the idols of Egypt: then I said, I will pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.
20:9But I wrought for my name's sake, that it should not be polluted before the heathen, among whom they were, in whose sight I made myself known unto them, in bringing them forth out of the land of Egypt.
20:10Wherefore I caused them to go forth out of the land of Egypt, and brought them into the wilderness.
20:11And I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them.
20:12Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them.
20:13But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness: they walked not in my statutes, and they despised my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; and my sabbaths they greatly polluted: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them in the wilderness, to consume them.
20:14But I wrought for my name's sake, that it should not be polluted before the heathen, in whose sight I brought them out.
20:15Yet also I lifted up my hand unto them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands;
20:16Because they despised my judgments, and walked not in my statutes, but polluted my sabbaths: for their heart went after their idols.
20:17Nevertheless mine eye spared them from destroying them, neither did I make an end of them in the wilderness.
20:18But I said unto their children in the wilderness, Walk ye not in the statutes of your fathers, neither observe their judgments, nor defile yourselves with their idols:
20:19I am the LORD your God; walk in my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them;
20:20And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the LORD your God.
20:21Notwithstanding the children rebelled against me: they walked not in my statutes, neither kept my judgments to do them, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; they polluted my sabbaths: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the wilderness.
20:22Nevertheless I withdrew mine hand, and wrought for my name's sake, that it should not be polluted in the sight of the heathen, in whose sight I brought them forth.
20:23I lifted up mine hand unto them also in the wilderness, that I would scatter them among the heathen, and disperse them through the countries;
20:24Because they had not executed my judgments, but had despised my statutes, and had polluted my sabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers' idols.
20:25Wherefore I gave them also statutes that were not good, and judgments whereby they should not live;
20:26And I polluted them in their own gifts, in that they caused to pass through the fire all that openeth the womb, that I might make them desolate, to the end that they might know that I am the LORD.
20:27Therefore, son of man, speak unto the house of Israel, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Yet in this your fathers have blasphemed me, in that they have committed a trespass against me.
20:28For when I had brought them into the land, for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to them, then they saw every high hill, and all the thick trees, and they offered there their sacrifices, and there they presented the provocation of their offering: there also they made their sweet savour, and poured out there their drink offerings.
20:29Then I said unto them, What is the high place whereunto ye go? And the name thereof is called Bamah unto this day.
20:30Wherefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Are ye polluted after the manner of your fathers? and commit ye whoredom after their abominations?
20:31For when ye offer your gifts, when ye make your sons to pass through the fire, ye pollute yourselves with all your idols, even unto this day: and shall I be enquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I will not be enquired of by you.
20:32And that which cometh into your mind shall not be at all, that ye say, We will be as the heathen, as the families of the countries, to serve wood and stone.
20:33As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out, will I rule over you:
20:34And I will bring you out from the people, and will gather you out of the countries wherein ye are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out.
20:35And I will bring you into the wilderness of the people, and there will I plead with you face to face.
20:36Like as I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I plead with you, saith the Lord GOD.
20:37And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant:
20:38And I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
20:39As for you, O house of Israel, thus saith the Lord GOD; Go ye, serve ye every one his idols, and hereafter also, if ye will not hearken unto me: but pollute ye my holy name no more with your gifts, and with your idols.
20:40For in mine holy mountain, in the mountain of the height of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, there shall all the house of Israel, all of them in the land, serve me: there will I accept them, and there will I require your offerings, and the firstfruits of your oblations, with all your holy things.
20:41I will accept you with your sweet savour, when I bring you out from the people, and gather you out of the countries wherein ye have been scattered; and I will be sanctified in you before the heathen.
20:42And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall bring you into the land of Israel, into the country for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to your fathers.
20:43And there shall ye remember your ways, and all your doings, wherein ye have been defiled; and ye shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for all your evils that ye have committed.
20:44And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have wrought with you for my name's sake, not according to your wicked ways, nor according to your corrupt doings, O ye house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.
20:45Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
20:46Son of man, set thy face toward the south, and drop thy word toward the south, and prophesy against the forest of the south field;
20:47And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein.
20:48And all flesh shall see that I the LORD have kindled it: it shall not be quenched.
20:49Then said I, Ah Lord GOD! they say of me, Doth he not speak parables?

20:1And it was doon in the seuenthe yeer, in the fyuethe monethe, in the tenthe dai of the monethe, men of the eldris of Israel camen to axe the Lord; and thei saten bifor me.
20:2And the word of the Lord was maad to me,
20:3and he seide, Sone of man, speke thou to the eldere men of Israel; and thou schalt seie to hem, The Lord God seith these thingis, Whether ye camen to axe me? Y lyue, for Y schal not answere to you, seith the Lord God. Sone of man,
20:4if thou demest hem, if thou demest, schewe thou to hem the abhomynaciouns of her fadris.
20:5And thou schalt seie to hem, The Lord God seith these thingis, In the dai in which Y chees Israel, and reiside myn hond for the generacioun of the hous of Jacob, and Y apperide to hem in the lond of Egipt, and Y reiside myn hond for hem, and Y seide, Y am youre Lord God,
20:6in that dai Y reiside myn hond for hem, that Y schulde leede hem out of the lond of Egipt, in to the lond which Y hadde purueiede to hem, the lond flowynge with mylk and hony, which is noble among alle londis.
20:7And Y seide to hem, Ech man caste awei the offenciouns of hise iyen, and nyle ye be defoulid in the idols of Egipt; Y am youre Lord God.
20:8And thei terriden me to wraththe, and nolden here me; ech man castide not awei the abhomynaciouns of hise iyen, nether thei forsoken the idols of Egipt.
20:9And Y seide, that Y wold schede out myn indignacioun on hem, and fille my wraththe in hem, in the myddis of the lond of Egipt. And Y dide for my name, that it schulde not be defoulid bifore hethene men, in the myddis of whiche thei weren, and among whiche Y apperide to hem, that Y schulde lede hem out of the lond of Egipt.
20:10Therfor Y castide hem out of the lond of Egipt, and Y ledde hem out in to desert;
20:11and Y yaf to hem my comaundementis, and Y schewide to hem my doomes, which a man schal do, and lyue in tho.
20:12Ferthermore and Y yaf to hem my sabatis, that it schulde be a sygne bitwixe me and hem, and that thei schulden wite, that Y am the Lord halewynge hem.
20:13And the hous of Israel terriden me to wraththe in desert; thei yeden not in my comaundementis, and thei castiden awei my domes, whiche a man that doith, schal lyue in tho; and thei defouliden greetli my sabatis. Therfor Y seide, that Y wolde schede out my strong veniaunce on hem in desert, and waste hem;
20:14and Y dide for my name, lest it were defoulid bifor hethene men, fro whiche Y castide hem out in the siyt of tho.
20:15Therfor Y reiside myn hond on hem in the desert, that Y brouyte not hem in to the lond which Y yaf to hem, the lond flowynge with mylk and hony, the beste of alle londis.
20:16For thei castiden awei my domes, and yeden not in my comaundementis, and thei defouliden my sabatis; for the herte of hem yede after idols.
20:17And myn iye sparide on hem, that Y killide not hem, nether Y wastide hem in the desert.
20:18Forsothe Y seide to the sones of hem in wildirnesse, Nyle ye go in the comaundementis of youre fadris, nether kepe ye the domes of hem, nethir be ye defoulid in the idols of hem.
20:19Y am youre Lord God, go ye in my comaundementis, and kepe ye my domes, and do ye tho.
20:20And halowe ye my sabatis, that it be a signe bitwixe me and you, and that it be knowun, that Y am youre Lord God.
20:21And the sones terriden me to wraththe, and yeden not in my comaundementis, and kepten not my domes, that thei diden tho, whiche whanne a man hath do, he schal lyue in tho, and thei defouliden my sabatis. And Y manaasside to hem, that Y wolde schede out my stronge veniaunce on hem, and fille my wraththe in hem in the desert.
20:22But Y turnede awei myn hond, and Y dide this for my name, that it were not defoulid bifore hethene men, fro whiche Y castide hem out bifore the iyen of tho.
20:23Eft Y reiside myn hond ayens hem in wildirnesse, that Y schulde scatere hem in to naciouns, and wyndewe hem in to londis;
20:24for that that thei hadden not do my domes, and hadden repreuyd my comaundementis, and hadden defoulid my sabatis, and her iyen hadden be after the idols of her fadris.
20:25Therfor and Y yaf to hem comaundementis not good, and domes in whiche thei schulen not lyue.
20:26And Y defoulide hem in her yiftis, whanne thei offriden to me for her trespassis al thing that openeth the wombe; and thei schulen wite, that Y am the Lord.
20:27Wherfor speke thou, sone of man, to the hous of Israel, and thou schalt seie to hem, The Lord God seith these thingis, Yit and in this youre fadris blasfemyden me, whanne thei dispisynge hadden forsake me,
20:28and Y hadde brouyte hem in to the lond on which Y reiside myn hond, that Y schulde yiue to hem, thei siyen ech hiy litil hil, and ech tree ful of boowis, and thei offriden there her sacrifices, and thei yauen there her offryngis, in to terring to wraththe; and thei settiden there the odour of her swetnesse, and thei offriden her moiste sacrifices.
20:29And Y seide to hem, What is the hiy thing, to whiche ye entren? And the name therof is clepid Hiy Thing til to this dai.
20:30Therfor seie thou to the hous of Israel, The Lord God seith these thingis, Certis ye ben defoulid in the weie of youre fadris, and ye don fornycacioun aftir the offendingis of hem,
20:31and in the offryng of youre yiftis, whanne ye leden ouer youre sones bi fier, ye ben defoulid in alle youre idols til to dai, and schal Y answere to you, the hous of Israel? Y lyue, seith the Lord God, for Y schal not answere to you;
20:32nether the thouyte of youre soul schal be don, that seien, We schulen be as hethene men, and as naciouns of erthe, that we worschipe trees and stoonys.
20:33Y lyue, seith the Lord God, for in strong hond, and in arm stretchid forth, and in strong veniaunce sched out, I schal regne on you.
20:34And Y schal lede out you fro puplis, and Y schal gadere you fro londis, in whiche ye ben scaterid; in strong hond, and in arm stretchid forth, and in strong veniaunce sched out Y schal regne on you.
20:35And Y schal bringe you in to desert of puplis, and Y schal be demed there with you face to face.
20:36As Y stryuede in doom ayens youre fadris in the desert of the lond of Egipt, so Y schal deme you, seith the Lord;
20:37and Y schal make you suget to my septre, and Y schal bringe in you in the boondis of pees.
20:38And Y schal chese of you trespassouris, and wickid men; and Y schal leede hem out of the lond of her dwelling, and thei schulen not entre in to the lond of Israel; and ye schulen wite, that Y am the Lord.
20:39And ye, the hous of Israel, the Lord God seith these thingis, Go ye ech man aftir youre idols, and serue ye tho. That and if ye heren not me in this, and defoulen more myn hooli name in youre yiftis,
20:40and in youre idols, in myn hooli hil, in the hiy hil of Israel, seith the Lord God, ye schulen be punyschid greuousliere. There al the hous of Israel schal serue me, sotheli alle men in the lond, in which thei schulen plese me; and there Y schal seke youre firste fruytis, and the bigynnyng of youre tithis in alle youre halewyngis.
20:41Y schal resseiue you in to odour of swetnesse, whanne Y schal leede you out of puplis, and schal gadere you fro londis, in whiche ye weren scaterid; and Y schal be halewid in you bifor the iyen of naciouns.
20:42And ye schulen wite, that Y am the Lord, whanne Y schal bringe you in to the lond of Israel, in to the lond for which Y reiside myn hond, that Y schulde yyue it to youre fadris.
20:43And ye schulen haue mynde there on youre weies, and on alle youre grete trespassis, bi whiche ye ben defoulid in tho; and ye schulen displese you in youre siyt, in alle youre malices whiche ye diden.
20:44And ye schulen wite, that Y am the Lord, whanne Y schal do wel to you for my name; not bi youre yuel weies, nether bi youre worste trespassis, ye hous of Israel, seith the Lord God.
20:45And the word of the Lord was maad to me,
20:46and he seide, Thou, sone of man, sette thi face ayens the weie of the south, and droppe thou to the south, and profesie thou to the forest of the myddai feeld.
20:47And thou schalt seie to the myddai forest, Here thou the word of the Lord. The Lord God seith these thingis, Lo! Y schal kyndle a fier in thee, and Y schal brenne in thee ech green tre, and ech drie tre; the flawme of brennyng schal not be quenchid, and ech face schal be brent ther ynne, fro the south til to the north.
20:48And ech man schal se, that Y the Lord haue kyndlid it, and it schal not be quenchid.
20:49And Y seide, A! A! A! Lord God, thei seien of me, Whethir this man spekith not bi parablis?

20:1In the .vij. yeare the .x. daye of the .v. moneth, it happened, that certayne of the elders of Israel came vnto me, for to aske councell at the Lorde, & sat them downe by me.
20:2Then came the worde of the Lorde vnto me on thys maner:
20:3Thou sonne of man: speake vnto the elders of Israel, & saye vnto them: Thus sayeth the Lord God: Are ye come hyther to aske eny thynge at me? As truly as I lyue (sayeth the Lorde)
20:4I will geue you no answere. Wilt thou not reproue them (thou sonne of man) wilt thou not reproue them? Shewe them the abhominacyons of their fore fathers,
20:5& tell them. Thus sayeth the Lorde God: In the daye when I chose Israel, and lyft vp myne hande vpon the sede of the house of Iacob, & shewed my selfe vnto them in the lande of Egypte: Yee, when I lyfte vp myne hande ouer them, and sayde: I am the Lorde youre God,
20:6euen in the daye that I lyft vp myne hande ouer them, to bringe them out of the lande of Egypte, into a lande that I had prouyded for them, which floweth with mylcke & hony, & is a pleasaunt lande amonge all other.
20:7Then sayde I vnto them: Cast awaye euery man the abhominacions that he hath before him, and defyle not youre selues with the Idoles of Egypte, for I am the Lorde youre God.
20:8But they rebelled agaynst me, and wolde not folowe me: to cast awaye euery man the abhominacyons of hys eyes, and to forsake the Idoles of Egypte. Then I made me to poure myne indignacyon ouer them, & to satisfye my wrath vpon them: yee, euen in the myddest of the lande of Egypte.
20:9But I wolde not do it, for my names sake: that it shulde not be vnhalowed before the Heathen, amonge whom they dwelt, & amonge whom I shewed my selfe vnto them, that I wolde brynge them out of the lande of Egypte.
20:10Now when I had caryed them out of the lande of Egypte, and brought them into the wyldernesse:
20:11I gaue them my commaundementes, & shewed them my lawes, which whoso kepeth shall lyue in them:
20:12I gaue them also my holy dayes, to be a token betwixte me & them, & therby to knowe, that I am the Lorde, which halowe them.
20:13And yet the house of Israel rebelled agaynst me in the wyldernesse, they wolde not walcke in my commaundementes, they haue cast a waye my lawes (which whoso kepeth shulde lyue in them) and my Sabboth dayes haue they greatly vnhalowed. Then I made me to poure out myne indignacyon vpon them, & to consume them in the wyldernesse.
20:14Yet I wolde not do it, for my names sake: lest it shulde be dishonoured before the Heathen, from the whych I had caryed them awaye.
20:15But I swore vnto them in the wyldernesse, that I wolde not brynge them in to the lande, which I gaue them: a lande that floweth with mylcke and hony, & is a pleasure of all landes:
20:16and that because they refused my lawes, and walcked not in my commaundementes, but had vnhalowed my Sabbathes, for their herte was gone after their ydoles.
20:17Neuerthelesse, myne eye spared them, so that I wolde not vtterly slaye them and consume them in the wyldernes.
20:18Moreouer, I sayde vnto their sonnes in the wyldernesse: walcke not in the statutes of youre fore fathers, kepe not their ordinaunces, and defyle not your selues with their ydoles,
20:19for I am the Lorde youre God. But walcke in my statutes, kepe my lawes & do them,
20:20halowe my Sabbathes: for they are a token betwixte me & you, that ye maye knowe howe that I am the Lorde your God.
20:21Notwythstandynge, their sonnes rebelled agaynst me also: they walked not in my statutes they kepte not my lawes to fulfyll them (which he that doth shall lyue in them) nether halowed they my Sabboth dayes. Then I made me agayne to poure out my indignacion ouer them, & to satisfye my wrath vpon them in the wyldernesse.
20:22Neuerthelesse, I wythdrewe my hande for my names sake, lest it shulde be vnhalowed amonge the Heathen, before whom I had brought them forth.
20:23I lyft vp myne hande ouer them also in the wyldernesse, that I wolde scatre them amonge the Heathen, & strowe them amonge the nacyons,
20:24because they had not kepte my lawes, but cast asyde my commaundementes, vnhalowed my Sabbathes, and lyft vp their eyes to their fathers Idoles.
20:25Wherfore I gaue them also commaundementes not good, & lawes thorowe the whych they shulde not lyue,
20:26& I vnhalowed them in their awne giftes (when I appointed for my selfe all their fyrst borne) to make them desolate: that they myght knowe, howe that I am the Lorde.
20:27Therfore (O thou sonne of man, tell the house of Israel, thus sayeth the Lorde God) Besyde all thys, youre fore fathers haue yet blasphemed me more, and greatly offended agaynst me.
20:28For after I had brought them in to the lande, that I promysed to geue them, when they sawe euery hye hyll & all the thicke trees: they made there their offrynges, & prouoked me wyth their oblacyons, makynge swete sauoures there, and powred out their drinckoffrynges.
20:29Then I asked them what is that hyll altare that ye go to it? And therfore is it called the hye place vnto this daye.
20:30Wherfore, speake vnto the house of Israel: Thus sayeth the Lorde God: ye are euen as vnclene as youre fore fathers & commytte whordome also with their abhominacyons.
20:31In all youre ydoles, where vnto ye brynge your oblacyons, and to whose honoure ye burne youre chyldren: ye, defyle youre selues, euen vnto thys daye: howe darre ye then come, and aske any questyon at me? O ye housholde of Israel? As truly as I lyue (sayeth the Lorde God) ye get no answere of me:
20:32and as for the thynge that ye go aboute, it shall not come to passe, where as ye saye: we wyll be as the Heathen, & do as other people in the lande, wod and stone wyll we worshyppe.
20:33As truly as I lyue, sayeth the Lord God, I my selfe wyll rule you wt a mightye hande, with a stretched out arme, & with indignacyon powred out ouer you:
20:34and will brynge you out of the nacyons and landes, wherin ye are scatred, and gather you together with a myghtye hande, with a stretched out arme & wt indignacyon poured out vpon you:
20:35and wyll bringe you in to the wyldernesse of the people, & there I will reason with you face to face.
20:36Lyke as I punyshed youre fore fathers in the wildernesse, so will I punyshe you also, sayeth the Lorde God.
20:37I will bringe you vnder my iurisdiccyon, and vnder the bonde of the couenannt.
20:38The forsakers also and the transgressours will I take from amonge you, & bringe them out of the lande of youre habitacyon: as for the lande of Israel, they shall not come in it: that you maye knowe howe that I am the Lorde.
20:39Go to nowe then (sayeth the Lorde God) ye house of Israel Euery one of you folowe your ydols, and serue them seynge ye refuse to obeye me. And my holy name shall ye nomore vnhalowe with your offringes and Idoles.
20:40For vpon my holy hyll, euen vpon the hye hill of Israel sayth the Lord God, shall all the house of Israel and all that is in the lande, worshyppe me: and in the same place will I fauoure them, and there will I requyre your heaue offringes and the fyrstlynges of your oblacyons, with all youre holy thynges.
20:41I will accepte youre swete sauoure, when I bringe you from the nacyons, and gather you together out of the landes, wherin ye be scatred: that I maye be halowed in you before the Heathen,
20:42and that ye maye knowe, that I am the Lorde, whych haue brought you into the lande of Israel: yee, into the same lande, that I swore to geue vnto youre forefathers.
20:43There shall ye call to remembraunce your awne wayes & all your ymaginacyons, wherin ye haue bene defyled: and ye shall iudge youre selues worthy to be destroyed, for all youre wickednes, that ye haue done.
20:44And ye shall knowe, that I am the Lord: when I entreate you after my name, not after youre wycked wayes, ner accordinge to youre corrupte workes: O ye house of Israel, sayeth the lord.
20:45Moreouer, the worde of the Lorde came vnto me, sayinge:
20:46Thou sonne of man, set thy face towarde the south, & speake to the south wynde,
20:47& saye to the wod towarde the south: Heare the worde of the Lorde, thus sayeth the Lorde God: Beholde, I wyll kyndle a fyre in the, that shall consume the grene trees with the drye. No man shalbe able to quench hys flame, but all that loketh from the south to the north, shalbe brent therin:
20:48& all fleshe shall se, that I the Lorde haue kyndled it, so that no man maye quench it.
20:49Then sayde I: O Lord, they wyll saye of me: Tush, they are but fables, that he telleth.
