Amos - Chapter: 5

>
5:1Heare ye this word which I take vp against you, euen a lamentation, O house of Israel.
5:2The virgin of Israel is fallen, she shall no more rise: she is forsaken vpon her land, there is none to raise her vp.
5:3For thus saith the Lord God, The citie that went out by a thousand, shall leaue an hundred, and that which went foorth by an hundred, shall leaue ten to the house of Israel.
5:4For thus saith the Lord vnto the house of Israel, Seeke ye mee, and ye shall liue.
5:5But seeke not Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal and passe not to Beer-sheba: for Gilgal shall surely goe into captiuitie, and Bethel shal come to nought.
5:6Seeke the Lord, and ye shall liue, lest hee breake out like fire in the house of Ioseph and deuoure it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel,
5:7Ye who turne iudgment to wormwood, and leaue off righteousnesse in the earth:
5:8Seeke him that maketh the seuen starres and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day darke with night: that calleth for the waters of the Sea, and powreth them out vpon the face of the earth: the Lord is his Name.
5:9That strengtheneth the spoiled against the strong: so that the spoiled shall come against the fortresse.
5:10They hate him that rebuketh in the gate: and they abhorre him that speaketh vprightly.
5:11Forasmuch therfore as your treading is vpon the poore, and ye take from him burdens of wheate, ye haue built houses of hewen stone, but ye shall not dwell in them: yee haue planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drinke wine of them.
5:12For I know your manifold transgressions, and your mighty sinnes: they afflict the iust, they take a bribe, and they turne aside the poore in the gate from their right.
5:13Therefore the prudent shall keepe silence in that time, for it is an euill time.
5:14Seeke good and not euill, that ye may liue: and so the Lord, the God of hosts shall be with you, as yee haue spoken.
5:15Hate the euill, and loue the good, and establish iudgement in the gate: it may be that the Lord God of hostes will bee gracious vnto the remnant of Ioseph.
5:16Therefore the Lord, the God of hostes, the Lord saith thus: Wailing shall be in all streets, and they shall say in all the high wayes, Alas, Alas: and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful of lamentation, to wailing.
5:17And in all vineyards shall be wailing: for I will passe through thee, saith the Lord.
5:18Woe vnto you that desire the day of the Lord: to what ende is it for you? the day of the Lord is darknes and not light.
5:19As if a man did flee from a lyon, and a beare met him, or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.
5:20Shall not the day of the Lord be darkenes, and not light? euen very darke, and no brightnesse in it?
5:21I hate, I despise your feast dayes, and I will not smell in your solemne assemblies.
5:22Though ye offer me burnt offerings, and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.
5:23Take thou away from mee the noise of thy songs: for I will not heare the melodie of thy violes.
5:24But let iudgement run downe as waters, and righteousnesse as a mightie streame.
5:25Haue yee offered vnto mee sacrifices and offerings in the wildernesse fourtie yeeres, O house of Israel?
5:26But yee haue borne the tabernacle of your Moloch, and Chiun your images, the starre of your god, which ye made to your selues.
5:27Therefore wil I cause you to go into captiuitie beyond Damascus, saith the Lord, whose Name is the God of hostes.

5:1Heare ye this worde, which I lift vp vpon you, euen a lamentation of the house of Israel.
5:2The virgine Israel is fallen, and shall no more rise: shee is left vpon her lande, and there is none to raise her vp.
5:3For thus saith ye Lord God, The citie which went out by a thousand, shall leaue an hundreth: and that which went forth by an hundreth, shall leaue ten to the house of Israel.
5:4For thus saith the Lord vnto the house of Israel, Seeke ye me, and ye shall liue.
5:5But seeke not Beth-el, nor enter into Gilgal, and go not to Beer-sheba: for Gilgal shall goe into captiuitie, and Beth-el shall come to nought.
5:6Seeke the Lord, and yee shall liue, least he breake out like fire in the house of Ioseph and deuoure it, and there be none to quench it in Beth-el.
5:7They turne iudgement to wormewood, and leaue off righteousnes in the earth.
5:8He maketh Pleiades, and Orion, and he turneth the shadowe of death into the morning, and he maketh the day darke as night: he calleth the waters of the sea, and powreth them out vpon the open earth: the Lord is his Name.
5:9He strengtheneth the destroyer against the mightie: and the destroyer shall come against the fortresse.
5:10They haue hated him, that rebuked in the gate: and they abhorred him that speaketh vprightly.
5:11Forasmuch then as your treading is vpon the poore, and yee take from him burdens of wheate, ye haue built houses of hewen stone, but ye shall not dwel in them: ye haue plated pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drinke wine of them.
5:12For I know your manifold transgressions, and your mightie sinnes: they afflict the iust, they take rewards, and they oppresse the poore in ye gate.
5:13Therefore the prudent shall keepe silence in that time, for it is an euill time.
5:14Seeke good and not euil, that ye may liue: and the Lord God of hostes shalbe with you, as you haue spoken.
5:15Hate the euil, and loue the good, and establish iudgement in the gate: it may bee that the Lord God of hostes will be mercifull vnto the remnant of Ioseph.
5:16Therfore the Lord God of hosts, the Lord saith thus, Mourning shalbe in all streetes: and they shall say in al the hie wayes, Alas, alas: and they shall call the husbandman to lamentation, and such as can mourne, to mourning.
5:17And in al the vines shalbe lamentation: for I wil passe through thee, saith the Lord.
5:18Woe vnto you, that desire the day of the Lord: what haue you to do with it? the day of the Lord is darkenes and not light.
5:19As if a man did flee from a lyon, and a beare met him: or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.
5:20Shal not the day of the Lord be darkenes, and not light? euen darkenes and no light in it?
5:21I hate and abhorre your feast dayes, and I wil not smelll in your solemne assemblies.
5:22Though ye offer me burnt offrings and meat offrings, I wil not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offrings of your fat beasts.
5:23Take thou away from me the multitude of thy songs (for I wil not heare the melodie of thy violes)
5:24And let iudgement runne downe as waters, and righteousnesse as a mightie riuer.
5:25Haue ye offered vnto me sacrifices and offrings in the wildernesse fourtie yeeres, O house of Israel?
5:26But you haue borne Siccuth your King, and Chiun your images, and the starre of your gods, which ye made to your selues.
5:27Therefore wil I cause you to goe into captiuitie beyond Damascus, saith the Lord, whose Name is the God of hostes.

5:1Heare thys worde, O ye house of Israel, & why? I must make thys mone for you.
5:2The vyrgyn Israel shall fall, & neuer ryse vp agayne: she shalbe cast downe vpon her awne grounde, and no man shall helpe her vp.
5:3For thus sayeth the Lorde God: where as there dwelt a .M. in one cytie, there shalbe left scarce an hundred therin: & where there dwelt an .C. there, shall scarce ten be left in the house of Israel.
5:4Neuertheles, thus sayth the Lorde vnto the house of Israell: Seke after me, and ye shall lyue,
5:5but seke not after Bethel. Come not at Gilgal, and go not to Bersaba: for Gilgal shalbe caryed awaye captyue, and Bethel shall come to naught.
5:6Seke the Lorde, that ye maye lyue: lest the house of Ioseph be brent with fyre and consumed & lest there be none to quenche Bethell.
5:7Ye turne the lawe to wormwod, & cast downe ryghteousnes vnto the grounde.
5:8Ye forsake the Lord that maketh the .vij. starres & the Orions, that turneth the nyght into daye, and of the daye he maketh darcknesse. He calleth the waters of the see, and poureth them out vpon the playne grounde: the Lorde is hys name.
5:9He rayseth destruccyon vpon the myghtye people, & bringeth downe the stronge holde.
5:10But they owe him euell will, that reproueth them openly: and who so telleth them the playne trueth, they abhorre hym.
5:11For so moche then as ye oppresse the poore, and robbe him of his best sustenaunce: therfore, where as ye haue buylded houses of square stone, ye shall not dwell in them. Maruelous pleasaunt vyneyardes shall ye plante, but the wyne of them shall ye not drincke: & why?
5:12as for the multitude of youre wyckednesses and youre stoute synnes, I knowe them ryght well. Enemyes are ye of the ryghteous, ye take rewardes, ye oppresse the poore in iudgement.
5:13Therfore, the wyse must nowe be fayne to holde his tunge, so wycked a tyme is it.
5:14Seke after the thinge that is good, & not euell, so shall ye lyue: yee, the Lorde God of hoostes shalbe with you, accordinge to your awne desyre.
5:15Hate the euell, and loue the good: set vp ryght agayne in the porte: and (no doute) the Lorde God of Hoostes shalbe mercyfull vnto the remnaunt of Ioseph.
5:16If no (sayeth the Lorde God, the God of hostes) there shall be mournynge in all stretes, yee, they shall saye in euery strete: alas, alas. They shall call the housbandman to lamentacyon, and soch as can mourne to mournynge.
5:17In all vyneyardes there shall be heuynesse, for I will come amonge you, sayeth the Lorde.
5:18Wo be vnto them that desyre the daye of the Lorde. Wherfore wolde ye haue it? As for the daye of the Lorde, it shalbe darcke and not cleare.
5:19Yee, lyke as when a man runneth from a lyon, and a Beer meteth with him: or when he commeth into the house, & leaneth his hande vpon the wall, a serpent byteth him.
5:20Shall not the daye of the Lorde be darcke, & not cleare? shall it not be cloudy, & no shyne in it?
5:21I hate and abhorre your holy dayes, & where as ye cense me when ye come together, I wyll not accepte it.
5:22And though ye offre me brent offrynges and meat offrynges, yet haue I no pleasure therin. As for your fat thanckofferynges. I wyll not loke vpon them:
5:23Awaye with that noyse of thy songes, I will not heare thy playes of musyck:
5:24but se that equytie flowe as the water, and ryghteousnesse as a myghtye streame.
5:25O ye house of Israel, gaue ye me offrynges and sacrifyces those fourty yeares longe in the wyldernes?
5:26yet haue ye set vp tabernacles to your Moloch, and ymages of your Idols, yee, and the starre of your God Rempha, fygures which ye made to worshyppe them.
5:27Therfore wyll I cause you to be caryed awaye beyonde Damascus, sayeth the Lord, whose name is the God of Hostes.
