Matthew - Chapter: 5

>
5:1And seeing the multitudes, he went vp into a mountaine: and when he was set, his disciples came vnto him.
5:2And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
5:3Blessed are the poore in spirit: for theirs is the kingdome of heauen.
5:4Blessed are they that mourne: for they shall be comforted.
5:5Blessed are the meeke: for they shall inherit the earth.
5:6Blessed are they which doe hunger and thirst after righteousnesse: for they shall be filled.
5:7Blessed are the mercifull: for they shall obtaine mercie.
5:8Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
5:9Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall bee called the children of God.
5:10Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousnesse sake: for theirs is the kingdome of heauen.
5:11Blessed are ye, when men shall reuile you, and persecute you, and shal say all manner of euill against you falsly for my sake.
5:12Reioyce, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heauen: For so persecuted they the Prophets which were before you.
5:13Yee are the salt of the earth: But if the salt haue lost his sauour, wherewith shall it bee salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be troden vnder foote of men.
5:14Yee are the light of the world. A citie that is set on an hill, cannot be hid.
5:15Neither doe men light a candle, and put it vnder a bushell: but on a candlesticke, and it giueth light vnto all that are in the house.
5:16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good workes, and glorifie your father which is in heauen.
5:17Thinke not that I am come to destroy the lawe or the Prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
5:18For verily I say vnto you, Till heauen and earth passe, one iote or one title, shall in no wise passe from the law, till all be fulfilled.
5:19Whosoeuer therfore shall breake one of these least commaundements, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdome of heauen: but whosoeuer shall doe, and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdome of heauen.
5:20For I say vnto you, That except your righteousnesse shall exceede the righteousnesse of the Scribes and Pharisees, yee shall in no case enter into the kingdome of heauen.
5:21Yee haue heard, that it was saide by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill: and, Whosoeuer shall kill, shalbe in danger of the iudgement.
5:22But I say vnto you, that whosoeuer is angry with his brother without a cause, shall be in danger of the Iudgement: and whosoeuer shall say to his brother, Racha, shal be in danger of the counsell: but whosoeuer shall say, Thou foole, shalbe in danger of hell fire.
5:23Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there remembrest that thy brother hath ought against thee:
5:24Leaue there thy gift before the altar, and goe thy way, first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
5:25Agree with thine aduersarie quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him: least at any time the aduersarie deliuer thee to the iudge, and the iudge deliuer thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
5:26Uerily I say vnto thee, thou shalt by no meanes come out thence, till thou hast payd the vttermost farthing.
5:27Yee haue heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adulterie.
5:28But I say vnto you, That whosoeuer looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adulterie with her already in his heart.
5:29And if thy right eie offend thee, plucke it out, and cast it from thee. For it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
5:30And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee. For it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
5:31It hath beene said, Whosoeuer shall put away his wife, let him giue her a writing of diuorcement.
5:32But I say vnto you, that whosoeuer shall put away his wife, sauing for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoeuer shall marie her that is diuorced, committeth adulterie.
5:33Againe, yee haue heard that it hath beene said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forsweare thy selfe, but shalt performe vnto the Lord thine othes.
5:34But I say vnto you, Sweare not at all, neither by heauen, for it is Gods throne:
5:35Nor by the earth, for it is his footstoole: neither by Hierusalem, for it is the citie of the great king.
5:36Neither shalt thou sweare by thy head, because thou canst not make one haire white or blacke.
5:37But let your communication bee Yea, yea: Nay, nay: For whatsoeuer is more then these, commeth of euill.
5:38Yee haue heard that it hath beene said, An eie for an eie, and a tooth for a tooth.
5:39But I say vnto you, that yee resist not euill: but whosoeuer shall smite thee on thy right cheeke, turne to him the other also.
5:40And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coate, let him haue thy cloake also.
5:41And whosoeuer shall compell thee to goe a mile, goe with him twaine.
5:42Giue to him that asketh thee: and from him that would borrow of thee, turne not thou away.
5:43Yee haue heard, that it hath beene said, Thou shalt loue thy neighbour, and hate thine enemie:
5:44But I say vnto you, Loue your enemies, blesse them that curse you, doe good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully vse you, and persecute you:
5:45That yee may be the children of your father which is in heauen: for he maketh his sunne to rise on the euill and on the good, and sendeth raine on the iust, and on the vniust.
5:46For if yee loue them which loue you, what reward haue yee? Doe not euen the Publicanes the same?
5:47And if yee salute your brethren only, what do you more then others? Doe not euen the Publicanes so?
5:48Be yee therefore perfect, euen as your father, which is in heauen, is perfect.

5:1When he saw the multitude, he went vp into a mountayne: & when he was set, his disciples came to hym.
5:2And he opened his mouth, & taught them, saying.
5:3Blessed (are) the poore in spirite: for theirs is the kyngdome of heauen.
5:4Blessed (are) they that mourne: for they shalbe comforted.
5:5Blessed (are) the meke: for they shall inherite the earth.
5:6Blessed (are) they, which do hunger and thirste (after) righteousnes: for they shalbe satisfied.
5:7Blessed (are) the mercyfull: for they shall obteyne mercy.
5:8Blessed (are) the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
5:9Blessed (are) the peace makers: for they shalbe called the chyldren of God.
5:10Blessed (are) they which suffer persecution for righteousnes sake: for theirs is the kyngdome of heauen.
5:11Blessed are ye, whe (men) reuyle you, and persecute (you) and, lying, shall say all maner of euyll saying agaynst you, for my sake.
5:12Reioyce, and be glad: for great is your rewarde in heauen. For so persecuted they the prophetes, whiche were before you.
5:13Ye are the salt of the earth. But yf the salt become vnsauery, where in shall it be salted? It is thencefoorth good for nothing, but to be caste out, and to be troden vnder foote of men.
5:14Ye are the lyght of the worlde. A citie that is set on an hyll, can not be hyd.
5:15Neyther do men lyght a candell, and put it vnder a busshell: but on a candelsticke, and it geueth lyght vnto all that are in the house.
5:16Let your lyght so shyne before men, that they may see your good workes, and glorifie your father, whiche is in heauen.
5:17Thynke not that I am come to destroy the lawe, or the prophetes. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfyll.
5:18For truely I say vnto you, tyll heauen and earth passe, one iotte, or one title of the lawe shall not scape, tyll all be fulfylled.
5:19Whosoeuer therfore breaketh one of these least commaundementes, and teacheth men so, he shalbe called the leaste in the kyngdome of heauen. But who so euer doeth, and teacheth (so) the same shalbe called great in the kyngdome of heauen.
5:20For I say vnto you: except your righteousnes, excede the righteousnes of the Scribes and Pharisees, ye shall not enter into the kyngdome of heauen.
5:21Ye haue hearde, that it was sayde to them of the olde tyme, thou shalt not kyll: who so euer kylleth, shalbe in daunger of iudgement.
5:22But I say vnto you, that who so euer is angry with his brother, vnaduisedly, shalbe in daunger of iudgement. And who so euer shall say vnto his brother, racha, shalbe in daunger of a councell: But, whosoeuer shall saye (thou) foole, shalbe in daunger of hell fire.
5:23Therfore, if thou bring thy gyft to the aulter, and there remembrest, that thy brother hath ought agaynst thee:
5:24Leaue there thy gyft, before the aulter, and go thy way, first and be reconciled to thy brother: and then, come and offer thy gyft.
5:25Agree with thyne aduersarie quicklye, whyles thou art in the waye with him: lest at any tyme the aduersarie deliuer thee to the iudge, and the iudge deliuer thee to the minister, and then thou be cast into pryson.
5:26Ueryly I say vnto thee, thou shalt not come out thence, tyll thou hast payde the vtmost farthyng.
5:27Ye haue hearde, that it was sayde vnto them of olde tyme: Thou shalt not commit adultry.
5:28But I say vnto you, that whosoeuer loketh on a woman, to luste after her, hath committed adultry with her alredy, in his heart.
5:29If thy ryght eye offende thee, plucke it out, and cast it from thee. For better it is vnto thee, that one of thy members perishe, the that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
5:30And yf thy ryght hande offende thee, cut it of, and cast it from thee. For better it is vnto thee, that one of thy members perishe, then that all thy body shoulde be cast into hell.
5:31It is saide: whosoeuer putteth away his wyfe, let hym geue her a wrytyng of diuorcement.
5:32But I say vnto you, that whosoeuer doeth put awaye his wyfe, except it be for fornication, causeth her to commit adultry. And whosoeuer maryeth her that is diuorced, committeth adultry.
5:33Agayne, ye haue hearde that it was sayde vnto them of olde tyme: Thou shalt not forsweare thy selfe, but shalt perfourme vnto the Lorde thine othes.
5:34But, I say vnto you: Sweare not at all, neither by heauen, for it is gods seate,
5:35Nor by the earth, for it is his footestoole, neither by Hierusalem, for it is the citie of the great kyng.
5:36Neither shalt thou sweare by thy head, because thou canst not make one heere whyte or blacke.
5:37But let your communication be yea, yea, nay nay. For whatsoeuer is more then these, commeth of euyll.
5:38Ye haue hearde, that it is sayde, an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.
5:39But, I say vnto you, that ye resist not euyll. But, whosoeuer geueth thee a blowe on thy right cheeke, turne to him the other also.
5:40And yf any man wyll sue thee at the lawe, and take away thy coate, let him haue thy cloke also.
5:41And whosoeuer wyll compell thee to go a myle, go with hym twayne.
5:42Geue to hym that asketh thee: & from hym that woulde borowe of thee, turne not thou away.
5:43Ye haue heard, that it is saide: Thou shalt loue thy neyghbour, & hate thyne enemie.
5:44But I saye vnto you, loue your enemies, blesse them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, pray for the which hurt you, and persecute you:
5:45That ye may be the chyldren of your father, which is in heauen. For he maketh his sonne to aryse on the euyll, and on the good, and sendeth rayne on the iust, and on the vniust.
5:46For yf ye loue them which loue you, what rewarde haue ye? Do not the publicans also euen the same?
5:47And yf ye salute or greete your brethre only, what singuler thyng do ye? Do not also the publicans lykewyse?
5:48Ye shall therfore be perfecte, euen as your father, which is in heauen, is perfecte.

5:1And when he sawe the multitude, he went vp into a mountaine: and when he was set, his disciples came to him.
5:2And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

5:5Blessed are the meeke: for they shall inherite the earth.
5:6Blessed are they which hunger and thirst for righteousnes: for they shalbe filled.
5:7Blessed are the mercifull: for they shall obteine mercie.
5:8Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
5:9Blessed are the peace makers: for they shall be called the children of God.
5:10Blessed are they which suffer persecution for righteousnes sake: for theirs is the kingdome of heauen.
5:11Blessed shall ye be when men reuile you, and persecute you, and say all maner of euill against you for my sake, falsely.
5:12Reioyce and be glad, for great is your reward in heauen: for so persecuted they the Prophets which were before you.
5:13Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt haue lost his sauour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be troden vnder foote of men.
5:14Ye are the light of the world. A citie that is set on an hill, cannot be hid.
5:15Neither doe men light a candel, and put it vnder a bushel, but on a candlesticke, and it giueth light vnto all that are in the house.
5:16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good workes, and glorifie your Father which is in heauen.
5:17Think not that I am come to destroy the Lawe, or the Prophets. I am not come to destroy them, but to fulfill them.
5:18For truely I say vnto you, Till heauen, and earth perish, one iote or one title of the Law shall not scape, till all things be fulfilled.
5:19Whosoeuer therefore shall breake one of these least commandements, and teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdome of heauen: but whosoeuer shall obserue and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdome of heauen.
5:20For I say vnto you, except your righteousnes exceede the righteousnes of the Scribes and Pharises, ye shall not enter into the kingdome of heauen.
5:21Ye haue heard that it was sayd vnto them of the olde time, Thou shalt not kill: for whosoeuer killeth shalbe culpable of iudgement.
5:22But I say vnto you, whosoeuer is angry with his brother vnaduisedly, shalbe culpable of iudgment. And whosoeuer sayth vnto his brother, Raca, shalbe worthy to be punished by the Councill. And whosoeuer shall say, Foole, shalbe worthy to be punished with hell fire.
5:23If then thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there remembrest that thy brother hath ought against thee,
5:24Leaue there thine offring before the altar, and goe thy way: first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
5:25Agree with thine aduersarie quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him, lest thine aduersarie deliuer thee to the Iudge, and the Iudge deliuer thee to ye sergeant, and thou be cast into prison.
5:26Verely I say vnto thee, thou shalt not come out thence, till thou hast payed the vtmost farthing.

5:29Wherefore if thy right eye cause thee to offend, plucke it out, and cast it from thee: for better it is for thee, that one of thy members perish, then that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
5:30Also if thy right hand make thee to offend, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for better it is for thee that one of thy members perish, then that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
5:31It hath bene sayd also, Whosoeuer shall put away his wife, let him giue her a bill of diuorcement.
5:32But I say vnto you, whosoeuer shall put away his wife (except it be for fornication) causeth her to commit adulterie: and whosoeuer shall marrie her that is diuorced, committeth adulterie.
5:33Againe, ye haue heard that it was sayd to them of old time, Thou shalt not forsweare thy selfe, but shalt performe thine othes to the Lord.
5:34But I say vnto you, Sweare not at all, neither by heauen, for it is the throne of God:

5:45That ye may be the children of your father that is in heauen: for he maketh his sunne to arise on the euill, and the good, and sendeth raine on the iust, and vniust.
5:46For if ye loue them, which loue you, what rewarde shall you haue? Doe not the Publicanes euen the same?
5:47And if ye be friendly to your brethren onely, what singular thing doe ye? doe not euen the Publicanes likewise?
5:48Ye shall therefore be perfit, as your Father which is in heauen, is perfite.
