Matthew - Chapter: 5

>
5:1And seeing the multitudes, he went vp into a mountaine: and when he was set, his disciples came vnto him.
5:2And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
5:3Blessed are the poore in spirit: for theirs is the kingdome of heauen.
5:4Blessed are they that mourne: for they shall be comforted.
5:5Blessed are the meeke: for they shall inherit the earth.
5:6Blessed are they which doe hunger and thirst after righteousnesse: for they shall be filled.
5:7Blessed are the mercifull: for they shall obtaine mercie.
5:8Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
5:9Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall bee called the children of God.
5:10Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousnesse sake: for theirs is the kingdome of heauen.
5:11Blessed are ye, when men shall reuile you, and persecute you, and shal say all manner of euill against you falsly for my sake.
5:12Reioyce, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heauen: For so persecuted they the Prophets which were before you.
5:13Yee are the salt of the earth: But if the salt haue lost his sauour, wherewith shall it bee salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be troden vnder foote of men.
5:14Yee are the light of the world. A citie that is set on an hill, cannot be hid.
5:15Neither doe men light a candle, and put it vnder a bushell: but on a candlesticke, and it giueth light vnto all that are in the house.
5:16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good workes, and glorifie your father which is in heauen.
5:17Thinke not that I am come to destroy the lawe or the Prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
5:18For verily I say vnto you, Till heauen and earth passe, one iote or one title, shall in no wise passe from the law, till all be fulfilled.
5:19Whosoeuer therfore shall breake one of these least commaundements, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdome of heauen: but whosoeuer shall doe, and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdome of heauen.
5:20For I say vnto you, That except your righteousnesse shall exceede the righteousnesse of the Scribes and Pharisees, yee shall in no case enter into the kingdome of heauen.
5:21Yee haue heard, that it was saide by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill: and, Whosoeuer shall kill, shalbe in danger of the iudgement.
5:22But I say vnto you, that whosoeuer is angry with his brother without a cause, shall be in danger of the Iudgement: and whosoeuer shall say to his brother, Racha, shal be in danger of the counsell: but whosoeuer shall say, Thou foole, shalbe in danger of hell fire.
5:23Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there remembrest that thy brother hath ought against thee:
5:24Leaue there thy gift before the altar, and goe thy way, first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
5:25Agree with thine aduersarie quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him: least at any time the aduersarie deliuer thee to the iudge, and the iudge deliuer thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
5:26Uerily I say vnto thee, thou shalt by no meanes come out thence, till thou hast payd the vttermost farthing.
5:27Yee haue heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adulterie.
5:28But I say vnto you, That whosoeuer looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adulterie with her already in his heart.
5:29And if thy right eie offend thee, plucke it out, and cast it from thee. For it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
5:30And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee. For it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
5:31It hath beene said, Whosoeuer shall put away his wife, let him giue her a writing of diuorcement.
5:32But I say vnto you, that whosoeuer shall put away his wife, sauing for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoeuer shall marie her that is diuorced, committeth adulterie.
5:33Againe, yee haue heard that it hath beene said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forsweare thy selfe, but shalt performe vnto the Lord thine othes.
5:34But I say vnto you, Sweare not at all, neither by heauen, for it is Gods throne:
5:35Nor by the earth, for it is his footstoole: neither by Hierusalem, for it is the citie of the great king.
5:36Neither shalt thou sweare by thy head, because thou canst not make one haire white or blacke.
5:37But let your communication bee Yea, yea: Nay, nay: For whatsoeuer is more then these, commeth of euill.
5:38Yee haue heard that it hath beene said, An eie for an eie, and a tooth for a tooth.
5:39But I say vnto you, that yee resist not euill: but whosoeuer shall smite thee on thy right cheeke, turne to him the other also.
5:40And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coate, let him haue thy cloake also.
5:41And whosoeuer shall compell thee to goe a mile, goe with him twaine.
5:42Giue to him that asketh thee: and from him that would borrow of thee, turne not thou away.
5:43Yee haue heard, that it hath beene said, Thou shalt loue thy neighbour, and hate thine enemie:
5:44But I say vnto you, Loue your enemies, blesse them that curse you, doe good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully vse you, and persecute you:
5:45That yee may be the children of your father which is in heauen: for he maketh his sunne to rise on the euill and on the good, and sendeth raine on the iust, and on the vniust.
5:46For if yee loue them which loue you, what reward haue yee? Doe not euen the Publicanes the same?
5:47And if yee salute your brethren only, what do you more then others? Doe not euen the Publicanes so?
5:48Be yee therefore perfect, euen as your father, which is in heauen, is perfect.

5:17Think not that I am come to destroy the Lawe, or the Prophets. I am not come to destroy them, but to fulfill them.
5:18For truely I say vnto you, Till heauen, and earth perish, one iote or one title of the Law shall not scape, till all things be fulfilled.
5:19Whosoeuer therefore shall breake one of these least commandements, and teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdome of heauen: but whosoeuer shall obserue and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdome of heauen.
5:20For I say vnto you, except your righteousnes exceede the righteousnes of the Scribes and Pharises, ye shall not enter into the kingdome of heauen.
5:21Ye haue heard that it was sayd vnto them of the olde time, Thou shalt not kill: for whosoeuer killeth shalbe culpable of iudgement.
5:22But I say vnto you, whosoeuer is angry with his brother vnaduisedly, shalbe culpable of iudgment. And whosoeuer sayth vnto his brother, Raca, shalbe worthy to be punished by the Councill. And whosoeuer shall say, Foole, shalbe worthy to be punished with hell fire.
5:23If then thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there remembrest that thy brother hath ought against thee,
5:24Leaue there thine offring before the altar, and goe thy way: first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
5:25Agree with thine aduersarie quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him, lest thine aduersarie deliuer thee to the Iudge, and the Iudge deliuer thee to ye sergeant, and thou be cast into prison.

5:29Wherefore if thy right eye cause thee to offend, plucke it out, and cast it from thee: for better it is for thee, that one of thy members perish, then that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
5:30Also if thy right hand make thee to offend, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for better it is for thee that one of thy members perish, then that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
5:31It hath bene sayd also, Whosoeuer shall put away his wife, let him giue her a bill of diuorcement.
5:32But I say vnto you, whosoeuer shall put away his wife (except it be for fornication) causeth her to commit adulterie: and whosoeuer shall marrie her that is diuorced, committeth adulterie.
5:33Againe, ye haue heard that it was sayd to them of old time, Thou shalt not forsweare thy selfe, but shalt performe thine othes to the Lord.
5:34But I say vnto you, Sweare not at all, neither by heauen, for it is the throne of God:

5:43Ye haue heard that it hath bin said, Thou shalt loue thy neighbour, and hate your enemie.
5:44But I say vnto you, Loue your enemies: blesse them that curse you: doe good to them that hate you, and pray for them which hurt you, and persecute you,
5:45That ye may be the children of your father that is in heauen: for he maketh his sunne to arise on the euill, and the good, and sendeth raine on the iust, and vniust.
5:46For if ye loue them, which loue you, what rewarde shall you haue? Doe not the Publicanes euen the same?
5:47And if ye be friendly to your brethren onely, what singular thing doe ye? doe not euen the Publicanes likewise?
5:48Ye shall therefore be perfit, as your Father which is in heauen, is perfite.

5:1When he sawe the people, he went vp into a mountayne, and when he was sett, hys discyples came to him:
5:2and after that he had opened hys mouth, he taught them, sayinge:
5:3Blessed are the poore in sprete, for theyrs is the kyngdome of heauen.
5:4Blessed are they that mourne, for they shall receaue comfort.
5:5Blessed are the meke: for they shall receaue the enheritaunce of the earth.
5:6Blessed are they which honger and thyrst after ryghteousnes: for they shalbe satisfyed.
5:7Blessed are the mercyful: for they shall obteyne mercy.
5:8Blessed are the pure in herte: for they shall se God.
5:9Blessed are the peace makers: for they shalbe called the children of God.
5:10Blessed are they which suffre persecucyon for righteousnes sake: for theirs is the kingdome of heauen.
5:11Blessed are ye, when men reuyle you, and persecute you, and shall falesy say all maner of euyll sayinge against you, for my sake.
5:12Reioyse & be glad for greate is your rewarde in heuen. For so persecuted they the prophetes, which were before you.
5:13Ye are the salt of the earth: But yf the salt haue lost the saltnes, what shalbe seasoned therwith? It is thence forth good for nothynge, but to be cast out, and to be troaden downe of men.
5:14Ye are the light of the world. A cytie that is set on an hyll cannot be hyd,
5:15nether do men lyght a candell, and put it vnder a busshell, but on a candelstyck, and it geueth light vnto all that are in the house.
5:16Let your light so shyne before men. That they maye se your good worckes, & gloryfy your father, which is in heauen.
5:17Thynke not that I am come to destroye the lawe, or the prophetes: no, I am not come to destroye, but to fulfyll.
5:18For truely I saye vnto you: tyll heauen and earth passe, one iott or one tytle of the lawe shal not scape, tyll all be fulfylled.
5:19Whosoeuer therfore breaketh one of these leest commaundementes, and teacheth men so, he shalbe called the leest in the kyngdome of heauen. But whosoeuer doeth and teacheth, the same shalbe called greate in the kyngdome of heauen.
5:20For I saye vnto you: except your righteousnesse exceade the ryghteousnesse of the Scribes and Pharises, ye cannot entre into the kyngdome of heauen.
5:21Ye haue heard that it was sayd vnto them of the olde tyme. Thou shalt no kyll: whosoeuer killeth, shalbe in daunger of iudgement.
5:22But I say vnto you: that whosoeuer is angrye with hys brother (vnaduysedly) shalbe in daunger of iudgement. And whosoeuer saye vnto hys brother Racha, shalbe in daunger of a councell. But whosoeuer sayeth thou foole, shalbe in daunger of hell fyre.
5:23Therfore, yf thou offrest thy gyfte at the aulter, and there remembrest that thy brother hath ought agaynst the:
5:24leaue ther thyne offringe before the aulter & go thy waye fyrst, and be reconcyled to thy brother, and then come, and offre thy gyfte.
5:25Agree with thyne aduersary quycklye whyles thou art in the waye with him, lest at any tyme the aduersary deliuer the to the iudge, and the iudge delyuer the to the mynister, and then thou be cast into preson.
5:26Uerely, I say vnto the: thou shalt not come out thence, tyll thou haue payed the vtmost farthynge.
5:27Ye haue herde that it was sayd vnto them of olde tyme. Thou shall no committ aduoutrye.
5:28But I say vnto you that whosoeuer loketh on another mans wyfe to lust after her, hath commytted aduoutrye with her all ready in hys hert.
5:29Yf thy ryght eye hynder the, plucke hym out, and cast hym from the. For better it is vnto the, that one of thy membres perysshe, then that thy whole body shuld be cast into hell.
5:30And yf thy ryght hande hynder the, cutt hym of, and cast hym from the. For better it is vnto the, that one of thy membres perysshe, then that all thy body shulde be cast into hell.
5:31It is sayd, whosoeuer putteth awaye his wyfe, lett hym geue her a letter of the deuorcement.
5:32But I say vnto you: that whosoeuer doth put awaye his wyfe (excepte it be for fornycacyon) causeth her to breake matrymony. And whosoeuer maryeth her that is deuorsed commiteth aduoutrye.
5:33Agayne, ye haue hearde how it was sayd to them of olde tyme: thou shalt not forsweare thy selfe, but shalt perfourme vnto the Lorde those thinges that thou swearest.
5:34But I say vnto you: sweare not at all: nether by heauen, for it is Goddes seate,
5:35nor by the earth, for it is his fote stole: nether by Ierusalem, for it is the cytie of the great king:
5:36nether shalt thou sweare by thy heed, because thou canst not make one heare whyte or blacke.
5:37But your communicacyon shalbe, ye, ye, nay, nay: For whatsoeuer is added more then these, it commeth of euyll.
5:38Ye haue hearde that it is sayd: an eye for an eye: and a toth for a toth.
5:39But I saye vnto you, that ye resist not euell. But whosoeuer geue the a blowe on the ryght cheke, turne to hym the other also.
5:40And yf eny man wyll sue the at the law, and take awaye thy coate, let him haue thy clooke also.
5:41And whosoeuer wyll compell the to go a myle, go with him twayne.
5:42Geue to him that asketh the, and from hym that wolde borowe, turne not thou awaye.
5:43Ye haue heard that it is sayde, thou shalt loue thyne neyghbour, and hate thyne enemy.
5:44But I saye vnto you: loue your enemyes. Blesse them that curse you. Do good to them that hate you. Praye for them which hurt you and persecute you,
5:45that ye maye be the children of your father which is in heauen: for he maketh his sonne to aryse on the euell, & on the good, & sendeth rayne on the iust & on the vniust.
5:46For yf ye loue them which loue you: what reward haue ye? Do not the publycans also euen the same?
5:47And yf ye make moche of your brethren only, what singuler thinge do ye? Do not also the publicans lykewise?
5:48ye shall therfore be perfecte, euen as your father which is in heauen is perfecte.
