Matthew - Chapter: 5

>
5:1And seeing the crowds, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him.
5:2Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:
5:3"Blessed are the poor in spirit, because theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
5:4Blessed are those who mourn, because they will be comforted."
5:5Blessed are the meek, because they will inherit the earth."
5:6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, because they will be filled."
5:7Blessed are the merciful, because they will obtain mercy."
5:8Blessed are the pure in heart, because they will see God."
5:9Blessed are the peacemakers, because they will be called the children of God."
5:10Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, because theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
5:11"Blessed are you when men revile you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for My sake."
5:12Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, because great is your reward in heaven, because they also persecuted the prophets who were before you."
5:13"You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how will it be salted? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and to be trampled underfoot by men."
5:14"You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden."
5:15Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house."
5:16Let your light shine like this before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven."
5:17"Do not think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill."
5:18Because, truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law, until all is fulfilled."
5:19Whoever therefore breaks one of these least commandments, but teaches men so, he will be called the least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, they will be called great in the kingdom of heaven."
5:20Because, I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter into the kingdom of heaven."
5:21"You have heard that it was said by those of old times, 'You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.'"
5:22But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause will be in danger of the judgment. And whoever shall say to his brother, 'Raca!' will be in danger of the council. But whoever says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of hell fire."
5:23Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,"
5:24leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift."
5:25Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest at any time your adversary deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be thrown into prison."
5:26Truly, I say to you, you will by no means come out of there until you have paid the last penny."
5:27"You have heard that it was said by those of old times, 'You shall not commit adultery.'"
5:28But I say to you that whoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart."
5:29And if your right eye offends you, pluck it out, and cast it from you; because, it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than your entire body to be thrown into hell."
5:30And if your right hand offends you, cut it off and cast it from you; because, it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your entire body be cast into hell."
5:31"It has been said, 'whoever puts away his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.'"
5:32But I say to you, that whoever puts away his wife for any reason except sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery."
5:33"Again, you have heard that it has been said to those of old times, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.'"
5:34But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, because it is God's throne;"
5:35nor by the earth, because it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King."
5:36Neither shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black."
5:37But let your communication be, 'yes,' 'yes,' or 'no,' 'no.' Because whatever goes beyond these is from evil."
5:38"You have heard that it has been said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.'"
5:39But I tell you that you should not resist a wicked person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also."
5:40And if anyone wants to sue you at the law and take away your coat, let him have your cloak also."
5:41And whoever compels you to go one mile, go two with him."
5:42Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away."
5:43"You have heard that it has been said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'"
5:44But I say to you, Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,"
5:45that you may be the children of your Father who is in heaven; because, He makes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust."
5:46Because, if you love those who love you, what reward do you gain? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?"
5:47And if you only greet your brethren, what do you do more than others? Do not even tax collectors do so?"
5:48Therefore be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect."

5:1And when he sawe the multitude, he went vp into a mountaine: and when he was set, his disciples came to him.
5:2And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,
5:3Blessed are the poore in spirit, for theirs is the kingdome of heauen.
5:4Blessed are they that mourne: for they shall be comforted.
5:5Blessed are the meeke: for they shall inherite the earth.
5:6Blessed are they which hunger and thirst for righteousnes: for they shalbe filled.
5:7Blessed are the mercifull: for they shall obteine mercie.
5:8Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
5:9Blessed are the peace makers: for they shall be called the children of God.
5:10Blessed are they which suffer persecution for righteousnes sake: for theirs is the kingdome of heauen.
5:11Blessed shall ye be when men reuile you, and persecute you, and say all maner of euill against you for my sake, falsely.
5:12Reioyce and be glad, for great is your reward in heauen: for so persecuted they the Prophets which were before you.
5:13Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt haue lost his sauour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be troden vnder foote of men.
5:14Ye are the light of the world. A citie that is set on an hill, cannot be hid.
5:15Neither doe men light a candel, and put it vnder a bushel, but on a candlesticke, and it giueth light vnto all that are in the house.
5:16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good workes, and glorifie your Father which is in heauen.
5:17Think not that I am come to destroy the Lawe, or the Prophets. I am not come to destroy them, but to fulfill them.
5:18For truely I say vnto you, Till heauen, and earth perish, one iote or one title of the Law shall not scape, till all things be fulfilled.
5:19Whosoeuer therefore shall breake one of these least commandements, and teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdome of heauen: but whosoeuer shall obserue and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdome of heauen.
5:20For I say vnto you, except your righteousnes exceede the righteousnes of the Scribes and Pharises, ye shall not enter into the kingdome of heauen.
5:21Ye haue heard that it was sayd vnto them of the olde time, Thou shalt not kill: for whosoeuer killeth shalbe culpable of iudgement.
5:22But I say vnto you, whosoeuer is angry with his brother vnaduisedly, shalbe culpable of iudgment. And whosoeuer sayth vnto his brother, Raca, shalbe worthy to be punished by the Councill. And whosoeuer shall say, Foole, shalbe worthy to be punished with hell fire.
5:23If then thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there remembrest that thy brother hath ought against thee,
5:24Leaue there thine offring before the altar, and goe thy way: first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
5:25Agree with thine aduersarie quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him, lest thine aduersarie deliuer thee to the Iudge, and the Iudge deliuer thee to ye sergeant, and thou be cast into prison.
5:26Verely I say vnto thee, thou shalt not come out thence, till thou hast payed the vtmost farthing.
5:27Ye haue heard that it was sayd to them of olde time, Thou shalt not commit adulterie.
5:28But I say vnto you, that whosoeuer looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adulterie with her already in his heart.
5:29Wherefore if thy right eye cause thee to offend, plucke it out, and cast it from thee: for better it is for thee, that one of thy members perish, then that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
5:30Also if thy right hand make thee to offend, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for better it is for thee that one of thy members perish, then that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
5:31It hath bene sayd also, Whosoeuer shall put away his wife, let him giue her a bill of diuorcement.
5:32But I say vnto you, whosoeuer shall put away his wife (except it be for fornication) causeth her to commit adulterie: and whosoeuer shall marrie her that is diuorced, committeth adulterie.
5:33Againe, ye haue heard that it was sayd to them of old time, Thou shalt not forsweare thy selfe, but shalt performe thine othes to the Lord.
5:34But I say vnto you, Sweare not at all, neither by heauen, for it is the throne of God:
5:35Nor yet by the earth: for it is his footestoole: neither by Hierusalem: for it is the citie of the great King.
5:36Neither shalt thou sweare by thine head, because thou canst not make one heare white or blacke.
5:37But let your communication be Yea, yea: Nay, nay. For whatsoeuer is more then these, commeth of euill.
5:38Ye haue heard that it hath bene sayd, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.
5:39But I say vnto you, Resist not euill: but whosoeuer shall smite thee on thy right cheeke, turne to him the other also.
5:40And if any man wil sue thee at the law, and take away thy coate, let him haue thy cloke also.
5:41And whosoeuer will compell thee to goe a mile, goe with him twaine.
5:42Giue to him that asketh, and from him that would borowe of thee, turne not away.
5:43Ye haue heard that it hath bin said, Thou shalt loue thy neighbour, and hate your enemie.
5:44But I say vnto you, Loue your enemies: blesse them that curse you: doe good to them that hate you, and pray for them which hurt you, and persecute you,
5:45That ye may be the children of your father that is in heauen: for he maketh his sunne to arise on the euill, and the good, and sendeth raine on the iust, and vniust.
5:46For if ye loue them, which loue you, what rewarde shall you haue? Doe not the Publicanes euen the same?
5:47And if ye be friendly to your brethren onely, what singular thing doe ye? doe not euen the Publicanes likewise?
5:48Ye shall therefore be perfit, as your Father which is in heauen, is perfite.

5:1When he sawe the people he went vp into a mountayne and when he was set his disciples came to hym
5:2and he opened hys mouthe and taught them sayinge:
5:3Blessed are the povre in sprete: for theirs is the kyngdome of heven.
5:4Blessed are they that morne: for they shalbe conforted.
5:5Blessed are the meke: for they shall inheret the erth.
5:6Blessed are they which honger and thurst for rightewesnes: for they shalbe filled.
5:7Blessed are ye mercifull: for they shall obteyne mercy.
5:8Blessed are the pure in herte: for they shall se God.
5:9Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shalbe called the chyldren of God.
5:10Blessed are they which suffre persecucio for rightwesnes sake: for theirs ys the kyngdome of heuen.
5:11Blessed are ye when men reuyle you and persecute you and shall falsly say all manner of yvell saynges agaynst you for my sake.
5:12Reioyce and be glad for greate is youre rewarde in heven. + For so persecuted they ye Prophetes which were before youre dayes.
5:13ye are ye salt of the erthe: but and yf ye salt have lost hir saltnes what can be salted ther with? It is thence forthe good for nothynge but to be cast oute and to be troade vnder fote of men.
5:14Ye are ye light of the worlde. A cite yt is set on an hill cannot be hid
5:15nether do men lyght a cadell and put it vnder a busshell but on a candelstick and it lighteth all that are in the house.
5:16Let youre light so shyne before men yt they maye se youre good workes and glorify youre father which is in heven.
5:17Thinke not yt I am come to destroye the lawe or the Prophets: no I am nott come to destroye them but to fulfyll them.
5:18For truely I saye vnto you till heven and erth perisshe one iott or one tytle of the lawe shall not scape tyll all be fulfilled.
5:19Whosoever breaketh one of these lest commaundmentes and teacheth men so he shalbe called the leest in the kyngdome of heve. But whosoever obserueth and teacheth ye same shal be called greate in the kyngdome of heven.
5:20For I saye vnto you except youre rightewesnes excede the righetewesnes of ye Scribes and Pharises ye canot entre into ye kyngdome of heven.
5:21Ye have herde howe it was sayd vnto the of ye olde tyme: Thou shalt not kyll. For whoso ever kylleth shall be in daunger of iudgemet.
5:22But I say vnto you whosoever is angre with hys brother shalbe in daunger of iudgement. Whosoeuer sayeth vnto his brother Racha shalbe in dauger of a cousell. But whosoeuer sayeth thou fole shalbe in dauger of hell fyre.
5:23Therfore whe thou offrest thy gifte at the altare and their remembrest that thy brother hath ought agaynst the:
5:24leue there thyne offrynge before the altre and go thy waye first and be reconcyled to thy brother and then come and offre thy gyfte.
5:25Agre with thyne adversary quicklye whyles thou arte in ye waye with hym lest that adversary deliver ye to ye iudge and ye iudge delivre ye to ye minister and the thou be cast into preson.
5:26I say vnto ye verely: thou shalt not come out thece till thou have payed ye utmost farthige.
5:27Ye haue hearde howe it was sayde to the of olde tyme: Thou shalt not comitt advoutrie.
5:28But I say vnto you that whosoeuer looketh on a wyfe lustynge after her hathe comitted advoutrie with hir alredy in his hert.
5:29Wherfore yf thy right eye offende ye plucke hym out and caste him from the. Better it is for the yt one of thy membres perisshe then that thy hole bodye shuld be cast into hell.
5:30Also if thy right honde offend ye cut hym of and caste hym from the. Better yt ys that one of thy membres perisshe then that all thy body shulde be caste in to hell.
5:31It ys sayd whosoever put awaye his wyfe let hym geve her a testymonyall also of the devorcement.
5:32But I say vnto you: whosoever put awaye his wyfe (except it be for fornicacion) causeth her to breake matrymony. And whosoever maryeth her that is devorsed breaketh wedlocke.
5:33Agayne ye haue hearde how it was sayd to the of olde tyme thou shalt not forsuere thy selfe but shalt performe thyne othe to God.
5:34But I saye vnto you swere not at all nether by heue for it ys Goddes seate:
5:35nor yet by the erth for it is his fote stole: nether by Ierusalem for it ys ye cyte of yt greate kynge:
5:36nether shalt thou sweare by thy heed because thou canst not make one white heer or blacke:
5:37But your comunicacion shalbe ye ye: nay nay. For whatsoeuer is more then yt cometh of yvell.
5:38Ye have hearde how it ys sayd an eye for an eye: a tothe for a tothe.
5:39But I saye to you that ye resist not wroge. But whosoever geve the a blowe on thy right cheke tourne to him the other.
5:40And yf eny man will sue the at the lawe and take awaye thy coote let hym have thy cloocke also.
5:41And whosoever wyll copell the to goo a myle goo wyth him twayne.
5:42Geve to him that axeth and fro him that wolde borowe tourne not awaye.
5:43Ye have hearde how it is sayde: thou shalt love thyne neghbour and hate thine enimy.
5:44But I saye vnto you love youre enimies. Blesse the that coursse you. Do good to them that hate you. Praye for them which doo you wronge and persecute you
5:45that ye maye be ye chyldern of youre father that is in heauen: for he maketh his sunne to aryse on ye yvell and on the good and sendeth his reyn on the iuste and vniuste.
5:46For yf ye love them which love you: what rewarde shall ye have? Doo not the Publicans euen so?
5:47And yf ye be frendly to youre brethren onlye: what singuler thynge doo ye? Do not the Publicans lyke wyse?
5:48ye shall therfore be perfecte eve as youre father which is in heauen is perfecte.
