Matthew - Chapter: 5

>
5:1And Jhesus, seynge the puple, wente vp in to an hil; and whanne he was set, hise disciplis camen to hym.
5:2And he openyde his mouth, and tauyte hem, and seide,
5:3Blessed ben pore men in spirit, for the kyngdom of heuenes is herne.
5:4Blessid ben mylde men, for thei schulen welde the erthe.
5:5Blessid ben thei that mornen, for thei schulen be coumfortid.
5:6Blessid ben thei that hungren and thristen riytwisnesse, for thei schulen be fulfillid.
5:7Blessid ben merciful men, for thei schulen gete merci.
5:8Blessid ben thei that ben of clene herte, for thei schulen se God.
5:9Blessid ben pesible men, for thei schulen be clepid Goddis children.
5:10Blessid ben thei that suffren persecusioun for riytfulnesse, for the kingdam of heuenes is herne.
5:11`Ye schulen be blessid, whanne men schulen curse you, and schulen pursue you, and shulen seie al yuel ayens you liynge, for me.
5:12Ioie ye, and be ye glad, for youre meede is plenteuouse in heuenes; for so thei han pursued `also profetis that weren bifor you.
5:13Ye ben salt of the erthe; that if the salt vanysche awey, whereynne schal it be saltid? To no thing it is worth ouere, no but that it be cast out, and be defoulid of men.
5:14Ye ben liyt of the world; a citee set on an hil may not be hid;
5:15ne me teendith not a lanterne, and puttith it vndur a busschel, but on a candilstike, that it yyue liyt to alle that ben in the hous.
5:16So schyne youre liyt befor men, that thei se youre goode werkis, and glorifie youre fadir that is in heuenes.
5:17Nil ye deme, that Y cam to vndo the lawe, or the profetis; Y cam not to vndo the lawe, but to fulfille.
5:18Forsothe Y seie to you, til heuene and erthe passe, o lettir or o titel shal not passe fro the lawe, til alle thingis be doon.
5:19Therfor he that brekith oon of these leeste maundementis, and techith thus men, schal be clepid the leste in the rewme of heuenes; `but he that doith, and techith, schal be clepid greet in the kyngdom of heuenes.
5:20And Y seie to you, that but your riytfulnesse be more plenteuouse than of scribis and of Farisees, ye schulen not entre into the kyngdom of heuenes.
5:21Ye han herd that it was seid to elde men, Thou schalt not slee; and he that sleeth, schal be gilti to doom.
5:22But Y seie to you, that ech man that is wrooth to his brothir, schal be gilti to doom; and he that seith to his brother, Fy! schal be gilti to the counseil; but he that seith, Fool, schal be gilti to the fier of helle.
5:23Therfor if thou offrist thi yifte `at the auter, and ther thou bithenkist, that thi brothir hath sum what ayens thee,
5:24leeue there thi yifte bifor the auter, and go first to be recounselid to thi brothir, and thanne thou schalt come, and schalt offre thi yifte.
5:25Be thou consentynge to thin aduersarie soone, while thou art in the weie with hym, lest perauenture thin aduersarie take thee to the domesman, and the domesman take thee to the mynystre, and thou be sent in to prisoun.
5:26Treuli Y seie to thee, thou shalt not go out fro thennus, til thou yelde the last ferthing.
5:27Ye han herd that it was seid to elde men, Thou schalt `do no letcherie.
5:28But Y seie to you, that euery man that seeth a womman for to coueite hir, hath now do letcherie bi hir in his herte.
5:29That if thi riyt iye sclaundre thee, pulle hym out, and caste fro thee; for it spedith to thee, that oon of thi membris perische, than that al thi bodi go in to helle.
5:30And if thi riyt hond sclaundre thee, kitte hym aweye, and caste fro thee; for it spedith to thee that oon of thi membris perische, than that al thi bodi go in to helle.
5:31And it hath be seyd, Who euere leeueth his wijf, yyue he to hir a libel of forsakyng.
5:32But Y seie to you, that euery man that leeueth his wijf, outtakun cause of fornycacioun, makith hir to do letcherie, and he that weddith the forsakun wijf, doith auowtrye.
5:33Eftsoone ye han herd, that it was seid to elde men, Thou schalt not forswere, but thou schalt yelde thin othis to the Lord.
5:34But Y seie to you, that ye swere not `for ony thing; nethir bi heuene, for it is the trone of God;
5:35nether bi the erthe, for it is the stole of his feet; nether bi Jerusalem, for it is the citee of a greet kyng; nether thou shalt not swere bi thin heed,
5:36for thou maist not make oon heere white, ne blacke;
5:37but be youre word, Yhe, yhe; Nay, nay; and that that is more than these, is of yuel.
5:38Ye han herd that it hath be seid, Iye for iye, and tothe for tothe.
5:39But Y seie to you, that ye ayenstonde not an yuel man; but if ony smyte thee in the riyt cheke, schewe to him also the tothir;
5:40and to hym that wole stryue with thee in doom, and take awey thi coote, leeue thou `to him also thi mantil;
5:41and who euer constreyneth thee a thousynde pacis, go thou with hym othir tweyne.
5:42Yyue thou to hym that axith of thee, and turne not awey fro hym that wole borewe of thee.
5:43Ye han herd that it was seid, Thou shalt loue thi neiybore, and hate thin enemye.
5:44But Y seie to you, loue ye youre enemyes, do ye wel to hem that hatiden you, and preye ye for hem that pursuen, and sclaundren you;
5:45that ye be the sones of your fadir that is in heuenes, that makith his sunne to rise vpon goode `and yuele men, and reyneth on iust men and vniuste.
5:46For if ye louen hem that louen you, what mede schulen ye han? whether pupplicans doon not this?
5:47And if ye greten youre britheren oonli, what schulen ye do more? ne doon not hethene men this?
5:48Therfore be ye parfit, as youre heuenli fadir is parfit.

5:1And when he sawe the multitude, he went vp into a mountaine: and when he was set, his disciples came to him.
5:2And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,
5:3Blessed are the poore in spirit, for theirs is the kingdome of heauen.
5:4Blessed are they that mourne: for they shall be comforted.
5:5Blessed are the meeke: for they shall inherite the earth.
5:6Blessed are they which hunger and thirst for righteousnes: for they shalbe filled.
5:7Blessed are the mercifull: for they shall obteine mercie.
5:8Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
5:9Blessed are the peace makers: for they shall be called the children of God.
5:10Blessed are they which suffer persecution for righteousnes sake: for theirs is the kingdome of heauen.
5:11Blessed shall ye be when men reuile you, and persecute you, and say all maner of euill against you for my sake, falsely.
5:12Reioyce and be glad, for great is your reward in heauen: for so persecuted they the Prophets which were before you.
5:13Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt haue lost his sauour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be troden vnder foote of men.
5:14Ye are the light of the world. A citie that is set on an hill, cannot be hid.
5:15Neither doe men light a candel, and put it vnder a bushel, but on a candlesticke, and it giueth light vnto all that are in the house.
5:16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good workes, and glorifie your Father which is in heauen.
5:17Think not that I am come to destroy the Lawe, or the Prophets. I am not come to destroy them, but to fulfill them.
5:18For truely I say vnto you, Till heauen, and earth perish, one iote or one title of the Law shall not scape, till all things be fulfilled.
5:19Whosoeuer therefore shall breake one of these least commandements, and teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdome of heauen: but whosoeuer shall obserue and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdome of heauen.
5:20For I say vnto you, except your righteousnes exceede the righteousnes of the Scribes and Pharises, ye shall not enter into the kingdome of heauen.
5:21Ye haue heard that it was sayd vnto them of the olde time, Thou shalt not kill: for whosoeuer killeth shalbe culpable of iudgement.
5:22But I say vnto you, whosoeuer is angry with his brother vnaduisedly, shalbe culpable of iudgment. And whosoeuer sayth vnto his brother, Raca, shalbe worthy to be punished by the Councill. And whosoeuer shall say, Foole, shalbe worthy to be punished with hell fire.
5:23If then thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there remembrest that thy brother hath ought against thee,
5:24Leaue there thine offring before the altar, and goe thy way: first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
5:25Agree with thine aduersarie quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him, lest thine aduersarie deliuer thee to the Iudge, and the Iudge deliuer thee to ye sergeant, and thou be cast into prison.
5:26Verely I say vnto thee, thou shalt not come out thence, till thou hast payed the vtmost farthing.
5:27Ye haue heard that it was sayd to them of olde time, Thou shalt not commit adulterie.
5:28But I say vnto you, that whosoeuer looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adulterie with her already in his heart.
5:29Wherefore if thy right eye cause thee to offend, plucke it out, and cast it from thee: for better it is for thee, that one of thy members perish, then that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
5:30Also if thy right hand make thee to offend, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for better it is for thee that one of thy members perish, then that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
5:31It hath bene sayd also, Whosoeuer shall put away his wife, let him giue her a bill of diuorcement.
5:32But I say vnto you, whosoeuer shall put away his wife (except it be for fornication) causeth her to commit adulterie: and whosoeuer shall marrie her that is diuorced, committeth adulterie.
5:33Againe, ye haue heard that it was sayd to them of old time, Thou shalt not forsweare thy selfe, but shalt performe thine othes to the Lord.
5:34But I say vnto you, Sweare not at all, neither by heauen, for it is the throne of God:
5:35Nor yet by the earth: for it is his footestoole: neither by Hierusalem: for it is the citie of the great King.
5:36Neither shalt thou sweare by thine head, because thou canst not make one heare white or blacke.
5:37But let your communication be Yea, yea: Nay, nay. For whatsoeuer is more then these, commeth of euill.
5:38Ye haue heard that it hath bene sayd, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.
5:39But I say vnto you, Resist not euill: but whosoeuer shall smite thee on thy right cheeke, turne to him the other also.
5:40And if any man wil sue thee at the law, and take away thy coate, let him haue thy cloke also.
5:41And whosoeuer will compell thee to goe a mile, goe with him twaine.
5:42Giue to him that asketh, and from him that would borowe of thee, turne not away.
5:43Ye haue heard that it hath bin said, Thou shalt loue thy neighbour, and hate your enemie.
5:44But I say vnto you, Loue your enemies: blesse them that curse you: doe good to them that hate you, and pray for them which hurt you, and persecute you,
5:45That ye may be the children of your father that is in heauen: for he maketh his sunne to arise on the euill, and the good, and sendeth raine on the iust, and vniust.
5:46For if ye loue them, which loue you, what rewarde shall you haue? Doe not the Publicanes euen the same?
5:47And if ye be friendly to your brethren onely, what singular thing doe ye? doe not euen the Publicanes likewise?
5:48Ye shall therefore be perfit, as your Father which is in heauen, is perfite.

5:1And seeing the crowds, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him.
5:2Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:
5:3"Blessed are the poor in spirit, because theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
5:4Blessed are those who mourn, because they will be comforted."
5:5Blessed are the meek, because they will inherit the earth."
5:6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, because they will be filled."
5:7Blessed are the merciful, because they will obtain mercy."
5:8Blessed are the pure in heart, because they will see God."
5:9Blessed are the peacemakers, because they will be called the children of God."
5:10Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, because theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
5:11"Blessed are you when men revile you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for My sake."
5:12Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, because great is your reward in heaven, because they also persecuted the prophets who were before you."
5:13"You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how will it be salted? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and to be trampled underfoot by men."
5:14"You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden."
5:15Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house."
5:16Let your light shine like this before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven."
5:17"Do not think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill."
5:18Because, truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law, until all is fulfilled."
5:19Whoever therefore breaks one of these least commandments, but teaches men so, he will be called the least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, they will be called great in the kingdom of heaven."
5:20Because, I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter into the kingdom of heaven."
5:21"You have heard that it was said by those of old times, 'You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.'"
5:22But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause will be in danger of the judgment. And whoever shall say to his brother, 'Raca!' will be in danger of the council. But whoever says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of hell fire."
5:23Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,"
5:24leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift."
5:25Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest at any time your adversary deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be thrown into prison."
5:26Truly, I say to you, you will by no means come out of there until you have paid the last penny."
5:27"You have heard that it was said by those of old times, 'You shall not commit adultery.'"
5:28But I say to you that whoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart."
5:29And if your right eye offends you, pluck it out, and cast it from you; because, it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than your entire body to be thrown into hell."
5:30And if your right hand offends you, cut it off and cast it from you; because, it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your entire body be cast into hell."
5:31"It has been said, 'whoever puts away his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.'"
5:32But I say to you, that whoever puts away his wife for any reason except sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery."
5:33"Again, you have heard that it has been said to those of old times, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.'"
5:34But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, because it is God's throne;"
5:35nor by the earth, because it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King."
5:36Neither shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black."
5:37But let your communication be, 'yes,' 'yes,' or 'no,' 'no.' Because whatever goes beyond these is from evil."
5:38"You have heard that it has been said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.'"
5:39But I tell you that you should not resist a wicked person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also."
5:40And if anyone wants to sue you at the law and take away your coat, let him have your cloak also."
5:41And whoever compels you to go one mile, go two with him."
5:42Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away."
5:43"You have heard that it has been said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'"
5:44But I say to you, Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,"
5:45that you may be the children of your Father who is in heaven; because, He makes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust."
5:46Because, if you love those who love you, what reward do you gain? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?"
5:47And if you only greet your brethren, what do you do more than others? Do not even tax collectors do so?"
5:48Therefore be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect."
