| 5:1 | And having seen the multitudes, he went up to the mount, and he having sat down, his disciples came to him, |
| 5:2 | and having opened his mouth, he was teaching them, saying: |
| 5:3 | `Happy the poor in spirit -- because theirs is the reign of the heavens. |
| 5:4 | `Happy the mourning -- because they shall be comforted. |
| 5:5 | `Happy the meek -- because they shall inherit the land. |
| 5:6 | `Happy those hungering and thirsting for righteousness -- because they shall be filled. |
| 5:7 | `Happy the kind -- because they shall find kindness. |
| 5:8 | `Happy the clean in heart -- because they shall see God. |
| 5:9 | `Happy the peacemakers -- because they shall be called Sons of God. |
| 5:10 | `Happy those persecuted for righteousness' sake -- because theirs is the reign of the heavens. |
| 5:11 | `Happy are ye whenever they may reproach you, and may persecute, and may say any evil thing against you falsely for my sake -- |
| 5:12 | rejoice ye and be glad, because your reward `is' great in the heavens, for thus did they persecute the prophets who were before you. |
| 5:13 | `Ye are the salt of the land, but if the salt may lose savour, in what shall it be salted? for nothing is it good henceforth, except to be cast without, and to be trodden down by men. |
| 5:14 | `Ye are the light of the world, a city set upon a mount is not able to be hid; |
| 5:15 | nor do they light a lamp, and put it under the measure, but on the lamp-stand, and it shineth to all those in the house; |
| 5:16 | so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and may glorify your Father who `is' in the heavens. |
| 5:17 | `Do not suppose that I came to throw down the law or the prophets -- I did not come to throw down, but to fulfill; |
| 5:18 | for, verily I say to you, till that the heaven and the earth may pass away, one iota or one tittle may not pass away from the law, till that all may come to pass. |
| 5:19 | `Whoever therefore may loose one of these commands -- the least -- and may teach men so, least he shall be called in the reign of the heavens, but whoever may do and may teach `them', he shall be called great in the reign of the heavens. |
| 5:20 | `For I say to you, that if your righteousness may not abound above that of the scribes and Pharisees, ye may not enter to the reign of the heavens. |
| 5:21 | `Ye heard that it was said to the ancients: Thou shalt not kill, and whoever may kill shall be in danger of the judgment; |
| 5:22 | but I -- I say to you, that every one who is angry at his brother without cause, shall be in danger of the judgment, and whoever may say to his brother, Empty fellow! shall be in danger of the sanhedrim, and whoever may say, Rebel! shall be in danger of the gehenna of the fire. |
| 5:23 | `If, therefore, thou mayest bring thy gift to the altar, and there mayest remember that thy brother hath anything against thee, |
| 5:24 | leave there thy gift before the altar, and go -- first be reconciled to thy brother, and then having come bring thy gift. |
| 5:25 | `Be agreeing with thy opponent quickly, while thou art in the way with him, that the opponent may not deliver thee to the judge, and the judge may deliver thee to the officer, and to prison thou mayest be cast, |
| 5:26 | verily I say to thee, thou mayest not come forth thence till that thou mayest pay the last farthing. |
| 5:27 | `Ye heard that it was said to the ancients: Thou shalt not commit adultery; |
| 5:28 | but I -- I say to you, that every one who is looking on a woman to desire her, did already commit adultery with her in his heart. |
| 5:29 | `But, if thy right eye doth cause thee to stumble, pluck it out and cast from thee, for it is good to thee that one of thy members may perish, and not thy whole body be cast to gehenna. |
| 5:30 | `And, if thy right hand doth cause thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast from thee, for it is good to thee that one of thy members may perish, and not thy whole body be cast to gehenna. |
| 5:31 | `And it was said, That whoever may put away his wife, let him give to her a writing of divorce; |
| 5:32 | but I -- I say to you, that whoever may put away his wife, save for the matter of whoredom, doth make her to commit adultery; and whoever may marry her who hath been put away doth commit adultery. |
| 5:33 | `Again, ye heard that it was said to the ancients: Thou shalt not swear falsely, but thou shalt pay to the Lord thine oaths; |
| 5:34 | but I -- I say to you, not to swear at all; neither by the heaven, because it is the throne of God, |
| 5:35 | nor by the earth, because it is His footstool, nor by Jerusalem, because it is a city of a great king, |
| 5:36 | nor by thy head mayest thou swear, because thou art not able one hair to make white or black; |
| 5:37 | but let your word be, Yes, Yes, No, No, and that which is more than these is of the evil. |
| 5:38 | `Ye heard that it was said: Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth; |
| 5:39 | but I -- I say to you, not to resist the evil, but whoever shall slap thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other; |
| 5:40 | and whoever is willing to take thee to law, and thy coat to take -- suffer to him also the cloak. |
| 5:41 | `And whoever shall impress thee one mile, go with him two, |
| 5:42 | to him who is asking of thee be giving, and him who is willing to borrow from thee thou mayest not turn away. |
| 5:43 | `Ye heard that it was said: Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and shalt hate thine enemy; |
| 5:44 | but I -- I say to you, Love your enemies, bless those cursing you, do good to those hating you, and pray for those accusing you falsely, and persecuting you, |
| 5:45 | that ye may be sons of your Father in the heavens, because His sun He doth cause to rise on evil and good, and He doth send rain on righteous and unrighteous. |
| 5:46 | `For, if ye may love those loving you, what reward have ye? do not also the tax-gatherers the same? |
| 5:47 | and if ye may salute your brethren only, what do ye abundant? do not also the tax-gatherers so? |
| 5:48 | ye shall therefore be perfect, as your Father who `is' in the heavens is perfect. |
| 5:1 | And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: |
| 5:2 | And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, |
| 5:3 | Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. |
| 5:4 | Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. |
| 5:5 | Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. |
| 5:6 | Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. |
| 5:7 | Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. |
| 5:8 | Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. |
| 5:9 | Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. |
| 5:10 | Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. |
| 5:11 | Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. |
| 5:12 | Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. |
| 5:13 | Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. |
| 5:14 | Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. |
| 5:15 | Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. |
| 5:16 | Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. |
| 5:17 | Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. |
| 5:18 | For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. |
| 5:19 | Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. |
| 5:20 | For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. |
| 5:21 | Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: |
| 5:22 | But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. |
| 5:23 | Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; |
| 5:24 | Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. |
| 5:25 | Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. |
| 5:26 | Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing. |
| 5:27 | Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: |
| 5:28 | But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. |
| 5:29 | And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. |
| 5:30 | And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. |
| 5:31 | It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: |
| 5:32 | But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery. |
| 5:33 | Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: |
| 5:34 | But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: |
| 5:35 | Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. |
| 5:36 | Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. |
| 5:37 | But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. |
| 5:38 | Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: |
| 5:39 | But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. |
| 5:40 | And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. |
| 5:41 | And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. |
| 5:42 | Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. |
| 5:43 | Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. |
| 5:44 | But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; |
| 5:45 | That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. |
| 5:46 | For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? |
| 5:47 | And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? |
| 5:48 | Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. |
| 5:1 | But seeing the crowds, He went up into the mountain, and seating Himself, His disciples came near to Him. |
| 5:2 | And opening His mouth, He taught them, saying: |
| 5:3 | Blessed are the poor in spirit! For theirs is the kingdom of the Heavens. |
| 5:4 | Blessed are they who mourn! For they shall be comforted. |
| 5:5 | Blessed are the meek! For they shall inherit the earth. Psa. 37:11 |
| 5:6 | Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness! For they shall be filled. |
| 5:7 | Blessed are the merciful! For they shall obtain mercy. |
| 5:8 | Blessed are the pure in heart! For they shall see God. |
| 5:9 | Blessed are the peacemakers! For they shall be called sons of God. |
| 5:10 | Blessed are they who have been persecuted for righteousness' sake! For theirs is the kingdom of Heaven. |
| 5:11 | Blessed are you when they shall reproach you, and persecute you , and shall say every evil word against you, lying, on account of Me. |
| 5:12 | Rejoice and leap for joy, for your reward is great in Heaven; for in this way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. |
| 5:13 | You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt becomes tasteless, with what shall it be salted? For it has strength for nothing any more but to be thrown out and to be trampled under by men. |
| 5:14 | You are the light of the world. A city situated on a mountain cannot be hidden. |
| 5:15 | Nor do they light a lamp and put it under the grain measure, but on the lampstand; and it shines for all who are in the house. |
| 5:16 | So let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works, and may glorify your Father in Heaven. |
| 5:17 | Do not think that I came to annul the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to annul, but to fulfill. |
| 5:18 | Truly I say to you, Until the heaven and the earth pass away, in no way shall one iota or one tittle pass away from the law until all comes to pass. |
| 5:19 | Therefore, whoever relaxes one of these commandments, the least, and shall teach men so, he shall be called least in the kingdom of Heaven. But whoever does and teaches them , this one shall be called great in the kingdom of Heaven. |
| 5:20 | For I say to you, If your righteousness shall not exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, in no way shall you go into the kingdom of Heaven. |
| 5:21 | You have heard that it was said to the ancients: "Do not commit murder!" And, Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the Judgment. Ex. 20:13; Deut. 5:17 |
| 5:22 | But I say to you, Everyone who is angry with his brother without a cause shall be liable to the Judgment. And whoever says to his brother, Raca, shall be liable to the sanhedrin; but whoever says, Fool! shall be liable to be thrown into the fire of Hell. |
| 5:23 | Therefore, if you offer your gift on the altar, and remember there that your brother has something against you, |
| 5:24 | leave your gift there before the altar, and go. First, be reconciled to your brother, and then coming, offer your gift. |
| 5:25 | Be well intentioned toward your opponent quickly, while you are in the way with him, that the opponent not deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. |
| 5:26 | Truly, I say to you, In no way shall you come out from there until you pay the last kodrantes. |
| 5:27 | You have heard that it was said to the ancients: "Do not commit adultery." Ex. 20:14; Deut. 5:18 |
| 5:28 | But I say to you, Everyone looking at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. |
| 5:29 | But if your right eye offends you, take it out and throw it from you, for it is profitable to you that one of your members should perish and all your body not be thrown into Hell. |
| 5:30 | And if your right hand causes you to offend, cut it off and throw it from you, for it is profitable to you that one of your members should perish and all your body not be thrown into Hell. |
| 5:31 | It was also said, Whoever puts away his wife, "let him give her a bill of divorce." Deut. 24:1 |
| 5:32 | But I say to you, Whoever puts away his wife, apart from a matter of fornication, causes her to commit adultery. And who ever shall marry the one put away commits adultery. |
| 5:33 | Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients: "You shall not swear falsely, but shall give your oaths to the Lord." Lev. 19:12; Num. 30:2 |
| 5:34 | But I say to you, Do not swear at all, neither by Heaven, because it is God's throne; Isa. 66:1 |
| 5:35 | nor by the earth, because it is the footstool of His feet; nor by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King. Isa. 66:1; Psa. 48:2 |
| 5:36 | Nor shall you swear by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black. |
| 5:37 | But let your word be Yes, yes; No, no. For whatever is more than these is from evil. |
| 5:38 | You have heard that it was said: "An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth;" Ex. 21:24; Lev. 24:20; Deut. 19:21 |
| 5:39 | but I say to you, Do not resist the evil; but whoever strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other to him also. |
| 5:40 | And to him desiring to sue you, and to take your tunic, allow him also to have the coat. |
| 5:41 | And whoever shall compel you to go one mile, go two with him. |
| 5:42 | He asking you to give, and he wishing to borrow from you, do not turn away. |
| 5:43 | You have heard that it was said, "You shall love your neighbor" and hate your enemy; Lev. 19:18 |
| 5:44 | but I say to you, Love your enemies; bless those cursing you, do well to those hating you; and pray for those abusing and persecuting you, |
| 5:45 | so that you may become sons of your Father in Heaven. Because He causes the sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and unjust. |
| 5:46 | For if you love those loving you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax-collectors do the same? |
| 5:47 | And if you only greet your brothers, what exceptional thing do you do? Do not the tax-collectors do so? |
| 5:48 | Therefore, you be perfect even as your Father in Heaven is perfect. |
