Matthew - Chapter: 26


26:1	And it came to passe, when Iesus had finyshed all these sayinges, he sayed vnto hys disciples.
26:2	Ye know that after two dayes shalbe easter, and the sonne of man shalbe delyuered to be crucifyed.
26:3	Then assembled together the chiefe priestes and the scrybes and the elders of the people to the palaice of the hye priest, called Cayphas,
26:4	and helde a counsell, howe they myghte take Iesus by sutteltie, and kyl hym.
26:5	But they sayed, not on the holy daye, lest any vproure aryse amonge the people.
26:6	When Iesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,
26:7	there came to him a woman, which had an alabaster boxe of precious oyntment, and poured it on hys heade, as he sate at the bourde.
26:8	When hys discyples sawe that, they had indignacyon, sayinge: what neded thys waste?
26:9	Thys oyntment myght haue bene wel solde, and geuen to the poore.
26:10	When Iesus vnderstode that, he sayed vnto them: why trouble ye the woman? she hath wrought a good worke vpon me.
26:11	For ye shall haue poore folke alwaies with you, but me shall ye not haue alwayes.
26:12	And in that she casted thys oyntmente on my bodye, she dyd it to burye me with al.
26:13	Verelye I saye vnto you, wheresoeuer thys gospell shalbe preached throughout al the world, there shal also thys that she hath done, be told for a memorial of her.
26:14	Then one of the twelue called Iudas Iscaryoth went vnto the chiefe priestes,
26:15	and sayd: What wyll ye geue me, and I wyll delyuer him vnto you? And they appoynted vnto him thyrtye peces of syluer.
26:16	And from that tyme he sought oportunite to betraye hym.
26:17	The fyrst day of swete bread the disciples came to Iesus sayinge vnto hym: where wylt thou that we prepare for the to eate the paschall lambe?
26:18	And he sayde: go into the cytye vnto suche a man, & saye to hym: the mayster sayth my tyme is at hande, I wyll kepe myne easter at thy house wyth my disciples.
26:19	And the discyples dyd as Iesus had appoynted them, and made redy the easter lambe.
26:20	When the euen was come, he sate doune with the .xij.
26:21	And as they dyd eate, he sayed: Verelye I saye vnto you, that one of you shal betraye me.
26:22	And they were excedynge sorowfull, and beganne euery one of them to saye vnto hym: is it I mayster?
26:23	He answered & sayed: he that deppeth hys hand wyth me in the dish the same shall betraye me.
26:24	The sonne of man goeth as it is written of hym: but wo be to that man, by whome the sonne of man shalbe betrayed. It had ben good for that man, yf he had neuer bene borne.
26:25	Then Iudas whiche betrayed him, answered and sayde: is it I mayster? He sayed vnto hym: thou hast sayed.
26:26	As they dyd eate, Iesus toke bread and gyue thankes, brake it and gaue it to the discyples and sayed: Take, eate, thys is my body.
26:27	And he toke the cup, & thanked, and gaue it them, saying: drynke of it euery one:
26:28	For thys is my bloude of the newe testament, that shalbe shedde for many, for the remissyon of synnes.
26:29	I saye vnto you: I wyll not drinke henceforth of this frute of the vyne tree, vntyll that daye, when I shall drinke it newe wyth you in my fathers kyngdome.
26:30	And when they had sayde grace, they went oute into mounte oliuete.
26:31	Then sayd Iesus vnto them: all ye shall be offended by me thys nyght. For it is written. I wyll smyte the shepehearde, and the shepe of the flocke shall be scattered abroade.
26:32	But after I am rysen agayne, I wyll goo before you into Galile.
26:33	Peter answered and sayd vnto hym, thoughe all men should be offended by the yet would I neuer be offended.
26:34	Iesus sayde vnto hym: Verelye I saye vnto the that thys same nyghte before the cocke crowe thou shalte denye me thryse.
26:35	Peter sayed vnto him: Yf I should dye with the, yet would I not denye the, lykewyse also sayed all the discyples.
26:36	Then went Iesus with them into a place whiche is called Gethsemane, and sayde vnto the disciples: sit ye here whyle I go and praye yonder.
26:37	And he toke with hym Peter and the two sonnes of Zebede, and began to waxe sorowful, and to be in an agonye.
26:38	Then said Iesus vnto them: my soule is heauy euen to the death. Tary ye here & watche with me.
26:39	And he went a lytell aparte, and fell flat on hys face and prayed sayinge: O my father, yf it be possible, let thys cup passe from me: neuerthelesse not as I wyll, but as thou wilte.
26:40	And he came vnto the discyples, and founde them a slepe, & sayd to Peter: what, could ye not watche with me one houre:
26:41	watche and praye, that ye fall not into temptacion. The spirite is ready, & the fleshe is weake.
26:42	He wente awaye once more, & prayed, sayinge: O my father, yf thys cup can not passe awaye from me, but that I drinke of it, thy wyl be fulfylled.
26:43	And he came and founde them a slepe agayne. For theyr eyes were heauye.
26:44	And he lefte them, and went agayne and prayed the thyrde tyme, sayinge the same wordes.
26:45	Then came he to hys discyples and sayde vnto them: Slepe hence forth and take youre reste. For lo the houre is at hande, and the sonne of man shalbe delyuered into the handes of synners.
26:46	Ryse, let vs be goynge: beholde, he is at hand that shall betraye me.
26:47	Whyle he yet spake: lo Iudas one of the twelue came, and with hym a great multitude with sweardes and staues, sent from the chiefe priestes and elders of the people.
26:48	And he that betrayed hym, had geuen them a token, saying: whosoeuer I kysse, that same is he, laye handes on hym.
26:49	And forthe wt al he came to Iesus, and sayed: hayle mayster and kyssed hym.
26:50	And Iesus sayde vnto hym: frende, wherfore arte thou come? Then came they, and layed handes on Iesus, & toke him.
26:51	And behold, one of them which were with Iesus, stretched out hys hande, and drue hys swerde, and stroke a seruaunt of the hye priest and smote of hys eare.
26:52	Then sayed Iesus vnto hym: put vp thy swearde into hys place. For all that laye hand on the swearde, shal perysh with the swerd.
26:53	Eyther thynkest thou that I can not nowe praye to my father, and he shal geue me more then .xij. legyons of Angelles?
26:54	But how then shoulde the scriptures be fulfylled: for so must it be.
26:55	The same tyme sayde Iesus to the multitude: ye be come out as it were vnto a thief with sweardes and staues, for to take me. I sat daylye teachynge in the temple amonge you, and ye toke me not.
26:56	Al this was done that the scriptures of the Prophetes myght be fulfylled.
26:57	Then all the disciples forsoke hym and fled. And they toke Iesus, and ledde hym to Cayphas the hye Priest, where the Scribes & the Elders were assembled.
26:58	And Peter folowed him a farre of vnto the hye priestes palayce: and went in and sat with the seruauntes, to se the ende.
26:59	The chiefe priestes and the elders, and all the counsell, sought false wytnes agaynst Iesus, for to put hym to death,
26:60	but founde none in so muche that when manye false wytnesses came yet founde they none. At the laste came two false wytnesses,
26:61	and sayed: Thys fellowe sayed: I can destroye the temple of God and buylde it agayne in thre dayes.
26:62	And the chief priest arose, and sayd to hym: answerest thou nothynge? How is it that these beare wytnes agaynst the?
26:63	But Iesus held hys peace: And the chief Priest answered and sayed to hym: I charge the in the name of the liuynge God, that thou tell vs whyther thou be Christ the sonne of God.
26:64	Iesus sayd to him thou hast sayed. Neuertheles I say vnto you, hereafter shall ye se the sonne of men sittynge on the ryght hand of power, and come in the cloudes of the skye.
26:65	Then the hye Priest rent hys clothes sayinge: He hath blasphemed: what nede we of anye more wytnesses? Beholde nowe ye haue heard hys blasphemy
26:66	what thynke ye? They answered and said: he is worthy to dye.
26:67	Then spat they in hys face and boffeted hym wyth fistes. And other smot hym with the palme of theyr handes
26:68	on the face, sayinge tell vs thou Christ who is he that smote the?
26:69	Peter sate without in the palayce. And a damsell came to him saying: Thou also wast with Iesus of Galile:
26:70	but he denyed before them al sayinge: I wote not what thou sayst.
26:71	When he was gone oute into the poorche, another wenche sawe hym, and sayde vnto them that were there. Thys felowe was also with Iesus of Nazareth,
26:72	and agayne he denyed with an oth that he knew not the man.
26:73	And after a whyle came vnto hym they that stode by & sayde vnto Peter: surely thou art euen one of them, for thy speache bewrayeth the.
26:74	Then beganne he to corse and to sweare that he knew not the man. And immediatly the cocke crewe.
26:75	And Peter remembred the wordes of Iesu whiche sayed vnto hym: before the cocke crowe, thou shalt deny me thryse. And went out at the dores and wept bitterlye.


26:1	And it came to passe, when Iesus had finished all these sayings, he saide vnto his disciples,
26:2	Ye know that after two dayes is ye Passeouer, and the Sonne of man shalbe deliuered to be crucified.
26:3	Then assembled together the chiefe Priests, and the Scribes, and the Elders of ye people into the hall of the high Priest called Caiaphas:
26:4	And consulted together that they might take Iesus by subtiltie, and kill him.
26:5	But they sayd, Not on the feast day, least any vprore be among the people.
26:6	And when Iesus was in Bethania, in the house of Simon the leper,
26:7	There came vnto him a woman, which had a boxe of very costly oyntment, and powred it on his head, as he sate at the table.
26:8	And when his disciples sawe it, they had indignation, saying, What needed this waste?
26:9	For this oyntment might haue bene solde for much, and bene giuen to the poore.
26:10	And Iesus knowing it, sayde vnto them, Why trouble yee the woman? for shee hath wrought a good woorke vpon me.
26:11	For yee haue the poore alwayes with you, but me shall yee not haue alwaies.
26:12	For in that shee powred this oyntment on my bodie, shee did it to burie me.
26:13	Verely I say vnto you, wheresoeuer this Gospel shall bee preached throughout all the worlde, there shall also this that shee hath done, be spoken of for a memoriall of her.
26:14	Then one of the twelue, called Iudas Iscariot, went vnto the chiefe Priestes,
26:15	And said, What will ye giue me, and I will deliuer him vnto you? and they appoynted vnto him thirtie pieces of siluer.
26:16	And from that time, he sought opportunitie to betraie him.
26:17	Nowe on the first day of the feast of vnleauened bread the disciples came to Iesus, saying vnto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eate the Passeouer?
26:18	And he said, Goe yee into the citie to such a man, and say to him, The master saieth, My time is at hande: I will keepe the Passeouer at thine house with my disciples.
26:19	And the disciples did as Iesus had giuen them charge, and made readie the Passeouer.
26:20	So when the Euen was come, hee sate downe with the twelue.
26:21	And as they did eate, he sayde, Verely I say vnto you, that one of you shall betraie me.
26:22	And they were exceeding sorowfull, and began euery one of them to say vnto him, Is it I, Master?
26:23	And hee answered and sayde, Hee that dippeth his hande with me in the dish, hee shall betraie me.
26:24	Surely the Sonne of man goeth his way, as it is written of him: but woe be to that man, by whom the Sonne of man is betrayed: it had bene good for that man, if hee had neuer bene borne.
26:25	Then Iudas which betraied him, answered and sayde, Is it I, Master? He sayde vnto him, Thou hast sayd it.
26:26	And as they did eate, Iesus tooke the bread, and when he had blessed, he brake it, and gaue it to the disciples, and sayd, Take, eate: this is my bodie.
26:27	Also he tooke the cuppe, and when he had giuen thankes, he gaue it them, saying, Drinke ye all of it.
26:28	For this is my blood of the Newe Testament, that is shedde for many, for the remission of sinnes.
26:29	I say vnto you, that I will not drinke henceforth of this fruit of the vine vntil that day, when I shall drinke it new with you in my Fathers kingdome.
26:30	And when they had sung a Psalme, they went out into the mount of Oliues.
26:31	Then saide Iesus vnto them, All yee shall be offended by me this night: for it is written, I wil smite the shepheard, and the sheepe of the flocke shalbe scattered.
26:32	But after I am risen againe, I will go before you into Galile.
26:33	But Peter aunswered, and sayde vnto him, Though that al men should be offended by thee, yet will I neuer be offended.
26:34	Iesus sayde vnto him, Verely I say vnto thee, that this night, before the cocke crow, thou shalt denie me thrise.
26:35	Peter saide vnto him, Though I should die with thee, I will in no case denie thee. Likewise also sayd all the disciples.
26:36	Then went Iesus with them into a place which is called Gethsemane, and said vnto his disciples, Sit ye here, while I goe, and pray yonder.
26:37	And hee tooke vnto him Peter, and the two sonnes of Zebedeus, and began to waxe sorowfull, and grieuously troubled.
26:38	Then sayde Iesus vnto them, My soule is very heauie, euen vnto the death: tarie yee here, and watch with me.
26:39	So hee went a litle further, and fell on his face, and praied, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup passe from me: neuerthelesse, not as I will, but as thou wilt.
26:40	After, hee came vnto the disciples, and founde them a sleepe, and sayde to Peter, What? coulde yee not watch with me one houre?
26:41	Watch, and praie, that yee enter not into tentation: the spirit in deede is readie, but the flesh is weake.
26:42	Againe he went away the second time, and praied, saying, O my Father, if this cuppe can not passe away from mee, but that I must drinke it, thy will be done.
26:43	And he came, and founde them a sleepe againe, for their eyes were heauie.
26:44	So he left them and went away againe, and praied the third time, saying the same woordes.
26:45	Then came he to his disciples, and said vnto them, Sleepe henceforth, and take your rest: behold, the houre is at hand, and the Sonne of man is giuen into the hands of sinners.
26:46	Rise, let vs goe: beholde, hee is at hande that betraieth me.
26:47	And while hee yet spake, loe Iudas, one of the twelue, came, and with him a great multitude with swordes and staues, from the high Priests and Elders of the people.
26:48	Now he that betraied him, had giuen them a token, saying, Whomesoeuer I shall kisse, that is he, laie holde on him.
26:49	And forthwith he came to Iesus, and sayd, God saue thee, Master, and kissed him.
26:50	Then Iesus sayde vnto him, Friende, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laide hands on Iesus, and tooke him.
26:51	And behold, one of them which were with Iesus, stretched out his hand, and drewe his sworde, and strooke a seruaunt of the high Priest, and smote off his eare.
26:52	Then sayde Iesus vnto him, Put vp thy sworde into his place: for all that take the sworde, shall perish with the sworde.
26:53	Either thinkest thou, that I can not now pray to my Father, and he will giue me moe then twelue legions of Angels?
26:54	Howe then shoulde the Scriptures bee fulfilled, which say, that it must be so?
26:55	The same houre sayde Iesus to the multitude, Ye be come out as it were against a thiefe, with swordes and staues to take mee: I sate daily teaching in the Temple among you, and yee tooke me not.
26:56	But all this was done, that the Scriptures of the Prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsooke him, and fled.
26:57	And they tooke Iesus, and led him to Caiaphas the hie Priest, where the Scribes and the Elders were assembled.
26:58	And Peter followed him a farre off vnto the hie Priestes hall, and went in, and sate with the seruants to see the ende.
26:59	Nowe the chiefe Priestes and the Elders, and all the whole councill sought false witnesse against Iesus, to put him to death.
26:60	But they founde none, and though many false witnesses came, yet founde they none: but at the last came two false witnesses,
26:61	And saide, This man saide, I can destroie the Temple of God, and build it in three daies.
26:62	Then the chiefe Priest arose, and sayde to him, Answerest thou nothing? What is the matter that these men witnesse against thee?
26:63	But Iesus helde his peace. Then the chiefe Priest answered, and saide to him, I charge thee sweare vnto vs by the liuing God, to tell vs, If thou be that Christ the Sonne of God, or no.
26:64	Iesus saide to him, Thou hast saide it: neuerthelesse I say vnto you, hereafter shall ye see the Sonne of man, sitting at the right hande of the power of God, and come in the cloudes of the heauen.
26:65	Then the hie Priest rent his clothes, saying, Hee hath blasphemed, what haue wee any more neede of witnesses? beholde: nowe yee haue heard his blasphemie.
26:66	What thinke yee? They answered, and said, He is guiltie of death.
26:67	Then spet they in his face, and buffeted him, and other smote him with roddes,
26:68	Saying, Prophecie to vs, O Christ, Who is he that smote thee?
26:69	Peter sate without in the hall, and a maide came to him, saying, Thou also wast with Iesus of Galile:
26:70	But hee denied before them all, saying, I wote not what thou saiest.
26:71	And when hee went out into the porche, another maide sawe him, and sayde vnto them that were there, This man was also with Iesus of Nazareth.
26:72	And againe he denied with an othe, saying, I knowe not the man.
26:73	So after a while, came vnto him they that stoode by, and sayde vnto Peter, Surely thou art also one of them: for euen thy speache bewraieth thee.
26:74	Then began hee to curse himselfe, and to sweare, saying, I knowe not the man. And immediately the cocke crewe.
26:75	Then Peter remembred the wordes of Iesus, which had sayde vnto him, Before the cocke crowe thou shalt denie me thrise. So he went out, and wept bitterly.

26:42	He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my father, if this cup may not passe away from me, except I drinke it, thy will be done.
26:43	And he came and found them asleep againe: For their eies were heauie.
26:44	And he left them, and went away againe, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.
26:45	Then commeth he to his Disciples, and saith vnto them, Sleepe on now, and take your rest, behold, the houre is at hand, and the sonne of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
26:46	Rise, let vs be going: behold, he is at hand that doeth betray me.
26:47	And while yet spake, loe, Iudas one of the twelue came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staues from the chiefe Priests and Elders of the people.
26:48	Now he that betrayed him, gaue them a signe, saying, Whomsoeuer I shall kisse, that same is he, hold him fast.
26:49	And forthwith hee came to Iesus, and said, Haile master, and kissed him.
26:50	And Iesus said vnto him, Friend, Wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid handes on Iesus, and tooke him.
26:51	And behold, one of them which were with Iesus, stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and stroke a seruant of the high Priests, and smote off his eare.
26:52	Then said Iesus vnto him, Put vp againe thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword, shall perish with the sword.
26:53	Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my father, and he shall presently giue me more then twelue legions of Angels?
26:54	But how then shall the Scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?
26:55	In that same houre said Iesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thiefe with swords and staues for to take mee? I sate daily with you teaching in the Temple, and ye laide no hold on me.
26:56	But all this was done, that the Scriptures of the Prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the Disciples forsooke him, and fled:
26:57	And they that had laid hold on Iesus, led him away to Caiaphas the high Priest, where the Scribes and the Elders were assembled.
26:58	But Peter followed him afarre off, vnto the high Priests palace, and went in, and sate with the seruants to see the end.
26:59	Now the chiefe Priests and Elders, and all the councell, sought false witnesse against Iesus to put him to death,
26:60	But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses,
26:61	And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the Temple of God, and to build it in three dayes.
26:62	And the high Priest arose, and said vnto him, Answerest thou nothing? What is it, which these witnesse against thee?
26:63	But Iesus held his peace. And the high Priest answered, and said vnto him, I adiure thee by the liuing God, that thou tell vs, whether thou bee the Christ the Sonne of God.
26:64	Iesus saith vnto him, Thou hast saide: Neuerthelesse I say vnto you, Hereafter shall yee see the Sonne of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heauen.
26:65	Then the high Priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemie: what further need haue wee of witnesses? Behold, now ye haue heard his blasphemie.
26:66	What thinke ye? They answered and said, He is guiltie of death.
26:67	Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him, and others smote him with the palmes of their hands,
26:68	Saying, Prophecie vnto vs, thou Christ, who is he that smote thee?
26:69	Now Peter sate without in the palace: and a damosell came vnto him, saying, Thou also wast with Iesus of Galilee.
26:70	But hee denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou saiest.
26:71	And when he was gone out into the porch, another maide saw him, and saide vnto them that were there, This fellow was also with Iesus of Nazareth.
26:72	And againe hee denied with an oath, I doe not know the man.
26:73	And after a while came vnto him they that stood by, and saide to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them, for thy speech bewrayeth thee.
26:74	Then beganne hee to curse and to sweare, saying, I know not the man. And immediatly the cocke crew.
26:75	And Peter remembred the words of Iesus, which said vnto him, Before the cocke crow, thou shalt denie mee thrice. And hee went out, and wept bitterly.
