Matthew - Chapter: 27

>
27:1When the morning was come, all the chiefe Priests and Elders of the people, tooke counsell against Iesus to put him to death.
27:2And when they had bound him, they led him away, and deliuered him to Pontius Pilate the gouernour.
27:3Then Iudas, which had betraied him, when he saw that hee was condemned, repented himselfe, and brought againe the thirtie pieces of siluer to the chiefe Priests and Elders,
27:4Saying, I haue sinned, in that I haue betraied the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to vs? see thou to that.
27:5And hee cast downe the pieces of siluer in the Temple, and departed, and went and hanged himselfe.
27:6And the chiefe Priests tooke the siluer pieces, and said, It is not lawfull for to put them into the treasurie, because it is the price of blood.
27:7And they tooke counsell, and bought with them the potters field, to burie strangers in.
27:8Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood vnto this day.
27:9(Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Ieremie the Prophet, saying, And they tooke the thirtie pieces of siluer, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value:
27:10And gaue them for the potters field, as the Lord appointed me.)
27:11And Iesus stood before the gouernour, and the gouernour asked him, saying; Art thou the King of the Iewes? And Iesus sayd vnto him, Thou sayest.
27:12And when hee was accused of the chiefe Priests and Elders, he answered nothing.
27:13Then saith Pilate vnto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witnesse against thee?
27:14And he answered him to neuer a word: insomuch that the Gouernour marueiled greatly.
27:15Now at that feast the Gouernor was woont to release vnto the people a prisoner, whom they would.
27:16And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
27:17Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said vnto them, Whom will ye that I release vnto you? Barabbas, or Iesus, which is called Christ?
27:18For hee knew that for enuie they had deliuered him.
27:19When he was set downe on the Iudgement seate, his wife sent vnto him, saying, Haue thou nothing to doe with that iust man: for I haue suffered many things this day in a dreame, because of him.
27:20But the chiefe Priestes and Elders perswaded the multitude that they should aske Barabbas, & destroy Iesus.
27:21The Gouernour answered, and said vnto them, Whether of the twaine will ye that I release vnto you? They said, Barabbas.
27:22Pilate said vnto them, What shall I doe then with Iesus, which is called Christ? They all sayde vnto him, Let him be crucified.
27:23And the Gouernour said, Why, what euil hath he done? But they cried out ye more, saying, Let him be crucified.
27:24When Pilate saw that he could preuaile nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, hee tooke water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this iust person: see yee to it.
27:25Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on vs, and on our children.
27:26Then released hee Barabbas vnto them, and when he had scourged Iesus, he deliuered him to be crucified.
27:27Then the souldiers of the Gouernour tooke Iesus into the common hall, and gathered vnto him the whole band of souldiers.
27:28And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
27:29And when they had platted a crowne of thornes, they put it vpon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Haile king of the Iewes.
27:30And they spit vpon him, and tooke the reed, and smote him on the head.
27:31And after that they had mocked him, they tooke the robe off from him, and put his owne raiment on him, and led him away to crucifie him.
27:32And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to beare his Crosse.
27:33And when they were come vnto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,
27:34They gaue him vineger to drinke, mingled with gall: and when hee had tasted thereof, hee would not drinke.
27:35And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Prophet, They parted my garments among them, and vpon my vesture did they cast lots.
27:36And sitting downe, they watched him there:
27:37And set vp ouer his head, his accusation written, THIS IS IESVS THE KING OF THE IEWES.
27:38Then were there two theeues crucified with him: one on the right hand, and another on the left.
27:39And they that passed by, reuiled him, wagging their heads,
27:40And saying, Thou that destroyest the Temple, & buildest it in three dayes, saue thy selfe: If thou be the Sonne of God, come downe from the Crosse.
27:41Likewise also the chiefe Priests mocking him, with the Scribes and Elders, said,
27:42He saued others, himselfe he cannot saue: If he be the King of Israel, let him now come downe from the Crosse, and we will beleeue him.
27:43He trusted in God, let him deliuer him now if hee will haue him: for he said, I am the Sonne of God.
27:44The thieues also which were crucified with him, cast ye same in his teeth.
27:45Now from the sixth houre there was darkenesse ouer all the land vnto the ninth houre.
27:46And about the ninth houre, Iesus cried with a loud voyce, saying, Eli, Eli, Lamasabachthani, that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken mee?
27:47Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.
27:48And straightway one of them ran, and tooke a spunge, and filled it with vineger, and put it on a reede, and gaue him to drinke.
27:49The rest said, Let bee, let vs see whether Elias will come to saue him.
27:50Iesus, when hee had cried againe with a loud voice, yeelded vp the ghost.
27:51And behold, the vaile of the Temple was rent in twaine, from the top to the bottome, and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent.
27:52And the graues were opened, and many bodies of Saints which slept, arose,
27:53And came out of the graues after his resurrection, and went into the holy citie, and appeared vnto many.
27:54Now when the Centurion, and they that were with him, watching Iesus, saw the earthquake, & those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truely this was the Son of God.
27:55And many women were there (beholding afarre off) which followed Iesus from Galilee, ministring vnto him.
27:56Among which was Mary Magdalene, & Mary the mother of Iames and Ioses, and the mother of Zebedees children.
27:57When the Euen was come, there came a rich man of Arimathea, named Ioseph, who also himselfe was Iesus disciple:
27:58He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Iesus: then Pilate commanded the body to be deliuered.
27:59And when Ioseph had taken the body, hee wrapped it in a cleane linnen cloth,
27:60And laide it in his owne newe tombe, which he had hewen out in the rocke: and he rolled a great stone to the doore of the sepulchre, and departed.
27:61And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting ouer against the sepulchre.
27:62Now the next day that followed the day of the preparation, the chiefe Priests and Pharisees came together vnto Pilate,
27:63Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiuer said, while he was yet aliue, After three daies I wil rise againe.
27:64Command therfore that the sepulchre be made sure, vntill the third day, lest his disciples come by night, & steale him away, and say vnto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last errour shalbe worse then the first.
27:65Pilate said vnto them, Yee haue a watch, goe your way, make it as sure as you can.
27:66So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

27:1When the mornyng was come, all the chiefe priestes, and the elders of the people, helde a councell agaynst Iesus to put hym to death.
27:2And brought hym bounde, and deliuered hym to Pontius Pilate the deputie.
27:3Then Iudas, whiche had betrayed hym, seyng that he was condempned, repented hym selfe, and brought agayne the thirtie peeces of syluer, to the chiefe priestes and elders,
27:4Saying: I haue synned, betraying the innocent blood. And they said: what is that to vs? see thou to that.
27:5And he cast downe the peeces of siluer in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged hym selfe.
27:6And the chiefe priestes toke the peeces of syluer, and sayde: It is not lawfull for to put the into the treasurie, because it is the price of blood.
27:7And they toke councell, and bought with them a potters fielde, to burye straungers in.
27:8Wherfore that fielde is called the fielde of blood, vntyll this day.
27:9(Then was fulfylled that, which was spoken by Ieremie the prophet, saying: And they toke thirtie siluer peeces, the price of hym that was valued, whom they bought of the children of Israel:
27:10And gaue them for the potters fielde, as the Lorde appoynted me.)
27:11Iesus stode before the deputie, and the deputie asked him, saying: Art thou the king of the Iewes? Iesus saith vnto hym: thou sayest.
27:12And when he was accused of the chiefe priestes and elders, he aunswered nothyng.
27:13Then sayth Pilate vnto him: hearest thou not how many witnesses they lay agaynst thee?
27:14And he aunswered hym to neuer a worde: insomuch, that the deputie marueyled greatly.
27:15At that feast, the deputie was wont to delyuer vnto the people a prysoner, whom they woulde desire.
27:16He had then a notable prysoner, called Barabbas.
27:17Therfore, when they were gathered together, Pilate saide vnto them: whether wyll ye that I geue loose vnto you Barabbas, or Iesus, whiche is called Christe?
27:18For he knewe, that for enuy they had delyuered hym.
27:19When he was set downe to geue iudgment, his wyfe sent vnto hym, saying: haue thou nothing to do with that iuste man: For I haue suffred many thynges this day in a dreame because of him.
27:20But the chiefe priestes & elders perswaded the people, that they shoulde aske Barabbas, and destroy Iesus.
27:21The deputie aunswered, and saide vnto them: Whether of the twayne wyll ye that I let loose vnto you? They saide, Barabbas.
27:22Pilate sayde vnto them: What shall I do then with Iesus, whiche is called Christe? They all sayde vnto hym: let hym be crucified.
27:23The deputie sayde: What euyll hath he done? But they cryed the more, saying: let hym be crucified.
27:24When Pilate sawe that he coulde preuayle nothyng, but that more busynesse was made, he toke water, and washed his handes before the people, saying: I am innocent of the blood of this iust person, see ye to it.
27:25Then aunswered all the people, and sayde: His blood be on vs, and on our chyldren.
27:26Then let he Barabbas loose vnto them, and scourged Iesus, and deliuered hym to be crucified.
27:27Then the souldiours of the deputie toke Iesus in the common hall, and gathered vnto hym all the bande [of souldiours.]
27:28And they stripped hym, and put on hym a skarlet robe:
27:29And platted a crowne of thornes, and put vppon his head, and a reede in his right hande, and bowed the knee before hym, and mocked hym, saying: Hayle kyng of the Iewes.
27:30And when they had spyt vpon hym, they toke the reede, and smote hym on the head.
27:31And after that they had mocked him, they toke the robe of hym agayne, and put his owne rayment on hym, and led hym away, to crucifie hym.
27:32And as they came out, they founde a man of Cyrene, named Simon: hym they compelled to beare his crosse.
27:33And they came vnto the place, which is called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of [dead mens] skulles.
27:34And gaue him vineger to drinke, mingled with gall: And when he had tasted therof, he woulde not drynke.
27:35When they had crucified hym, they parted his garmentes, & did cast lottes, that it myght be fulfylled whiche was spoken by the prophete: They departed my garmentes among them, & vpon my vesture dyd they cast lottes.
27:36And they sate, & watched him there.
27:37And set vp ouer his head, the cause [of his death] written: This is Iesus, the king of the Iewes.
27:38Then were there two thieues crucified with hym: one on the ryght hande, and another on the left.
27:39They that passed by, reuyled hym, waggyng their heades,
27:40And saying: Thou that destroyedst the temple, & buyldest it in three dayes, saue thy selfe. If thou be the sonne of God, come downe from the crosse.
27:41Lykewyse also the hye priestes, mockyng hym, with the scribes, and elders, [and pharisees] sayde:
27:42He saued other, hym selfe can he not saue. If he be the kyng of Israel, let him nowe come downe from the crosse, and we wyll beleue hym.
27:43He trusted in God, let hym delyuer hym nowe, yf he wyll haue hym: for he sayde, I am the sonne of God.
27:44The thieues also which were crucified with hym, cast the same in his teeth.
27:45Fro the sixth houre, was there darknesse ouer all the lande, vnto the nynth houre.
27:46And about the nynth houre, Iesus cried with a loude voyce, saying: Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani, that is to say: My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
27:47Some of them that stode there, when they hearde that, saide: This man calleth for Elias.
27:48And straightway one of them ranne, and toke a sponge, and when he had filled it full of vineger, he put it on a reede, and gaue hym to drynke.
27:49Other sayde, let be, let vs see whether Elias wyll come and saue hym.
27:50Iesus, when he had cryed agayne with a loude voyce, yeelded vp ye ghost.
27:51And beholde, the vayle of the temple dyd rent into two partes, fro the toppe to the bottome, and the earth did quake and the stones rent.
27:52And graues dyd open, and many bodyes of saintes which slept, arose:
27:53And went out of the graues, after his resurrection, and came into the holy citie, and appeared vnto many.
27:54When the Centurion, and they that were with hym watchyng Iesus, sawe the earthquake, and those thynges that were done, they feared greatly, saying: truely, this was the sonne of God.
27:55And many wome were there (beholdyng hym a farre of) whiche folowed Iesus fro Galilee, ministring vnto him.
27:56Among which, was Marie Magdalene, and Marie the mother of Iames and Ioses, & the mother of Zebedees chyldren.
27:57When the euen was come, there came a ryche man of Aramathia, named Ioseph, which also hym selfe was Iesus disciple.
27:58He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Iesus. Then Pilate comaunded the body to be delyuered.
27:59And when Ioseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a cleane lynnen cloth:
27:60And layde it in his newe tombe, which he had hewen out, euen in the rocke, and rolled a great stone to the dore of the sepulchre, and departed.
27:61And there was Marie Magdalene, & the other Marie, syttyng ouer against the sepulchre.
27:62The next day that folowed the day of preparyng, the hye priestes and pharisees came together vnto Pilate,
27:63Saying. Sir, we remember that this deceauer sayde whyle he was yet aliue: After three dayes I wil arise agayne.
27:64Commaunde therfore, that the sepulchre be made sure, vntyll the thirde day: lest his disciples come by nyght & steale hym away, and say vnto the people, he is rysen from the dead: & the last error shalbe worse then the first.
27:65Pilate sayde vnto them: Ye haue the watche, go your way, make it as sure as ye knowe.
27:66So they went, and made the sepulchre sure with the watch, and sealed the stone.

27:1When the morning was come, all the chiefe Priests, and the elders of the people tooke counsell against Iesus, to put him to death,
27:2And led him away bounde, and deliuered him vnto Pontius Pilate the gouernour.
27:3Then when Iudas which betraied him, sawe that hee was condemned, hee repented himselfe, and brought againe the thirtie pieces of siluer to the chiefe Priestes, and Elders,
27:4Saying, I haue sinned, betraying the innocent bloud. But they sayde, What is that to vs? see thou to it.
27:5And when hee had cast downe the siluer pieces in the Temple, hee departed, and went, and hanged himselfe.
27:6And the chiefe Priestes tooke the siluer pieces, and sayde, It is not lawfull for vs to put them into the treasure, because it is the price of bloud.
27:7And they tooke counsell, and bought with them a potters fielde, for the buriall of strangers.
27:8Wherefore that field is called, The field of bloud, vntill this day.
27:9(Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Ieremias the Prophet, saying, And they tooke thirtie siluer pieces, ye price of him that was valued, whom they of ye children of Israel valued.
27:10And they gaue them for the potters fielde, as the Lord appointed me.)
27:11And Iesus stood before ye gouernour, and the gouernour asked him, saying, Art thou that King of the Iewes? Iesus said vnto him, Thou sayest it.
27:12And when he was accused of the chiefe Priestes, and Elders, he answered nothing.
27:13Then saide Pilate vnto him, Hearest thou not howe many things they lay against thee?
27:14But he answered him not to one worde, in so much that the gouernour marueiled greatly.
27:15Nowe at the feast, the gouernour was wont to deliuer vnto the people a prisoner whom they would.
27:16And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
27:17When they were then gathered together, Pilate said vnto the, Whether will ye that I let loose vnto you Barabbas, or Iesus which is called Christ?
27:18(For he knewe well, that for enuie they had deliuered him.

27:20But the chiefe Priestes and the Elders had persuaded the people that they shoulde aske Barabbas, and should destroy Iesus.
27:21Then the gouernour answered, and said vnto them, Whether of the twaine will ye that I let loose vnto you? And they said, Barabbas.
27:22Pilate said vnto them, What shall I do then with Iesus, which is called Christ? They all said to him, Let him be crucified.
27:23Then saide the gouernour, But what euill hath he done? Then they cryed the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
27:24When Pilate saw that he auailed nothing, but that more tumult was made, he tooke water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this iust man: looke you to it.
27:25Then answered all the people, and saide, His bloud be on vs, and on our children.
27:26Thus let he Barabbas loose vnto them, and scourged Iesus, and deliuered him to be crucified.
27:27Then the souldiers of the gouernour tooke Iesus into the common hall, and gathered about him the whole band,
27:28And they stripped him, and put about him a skarlet robe,

27:36And they sate, and watched him there.
27:37They set vp also ouer his head his cause written, THIS IS IESVS THE KING OF THE IEVVES.
27:38And there were two theeues crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
27:39And they that passed by, reuiled him, wagging their heades,
27:40And saying, Thou that destroyest ye Temple, and buildest it in three dayes, saue thy selfe: if thou be ye Sonne of God, come downe from ye crosse.

27:43He trusted in God, let him deliuer him nowe, if he will haue him: for he saide, I am the Sonne of God.
27:44The selfe same thing also ye theeues which were crucified with him, cast in his teeth.
27:45Now from ye sixt houre was there darkenesse ouer all the land, vnto the ninth houre.
27:46And about ye ninth houre Iesus cryed with a loud voyce, saying, Eli, Eli, lamasabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
27:47And some of them that stoode there, when they heard it, said, This man calleth Elias.
27:48And straightway one of them ran, and tooke a spondge, and filled it with vineger, and put it on a reede, and gaue him to drinke.
27:49Other said, Let be: let vs see, if Elias wil come and saue him.
27:50Then Iesus cryed againe with a loude voyce, and yeelded vp the ghost.
27:51And behold, the vayle of the Temple was rent in twaine, from the top to the bottome, and the earth did quake, and the stones were cloue.
27:52And the graues did open themselues, and many bodies of the Saintes, which slept, arose,
27:53And came out of the graues after his resurrection, and went into the holy citie, and appeared vnto many.
27:54When the Centurion, and they that were with him watching Iesus, saw the earthquake, and the thinges that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truely this was the Sonne of God.

27:56Among whom was Marie Magdalene, and Marie the mother of Iames, and Ioses, and the mother of Zebedeus sonnes.
27:57And when the euen was come, there came a riche man of Arimathea, named Ioseph, who had also himselfe bene Iesus disciple.
27:58He went to Pilate, and asked ye body of Iesus. Then Pilate commanded ye body to be deliuered.
27:59So Ioseph tooke the body, and wrapped it in a cleane linnen cloth,
27:60And put it in his new tombe, which he had hewen out in a rocke, and rolled a great stone to the doore of the sepulchre, and departed.
27:61And there was Marie Magdalene, and the other Marie sitting ouer against the sepulchre.
27:62Nowe the next day that followed the Preparation of the Sabbath, the hie Priestes and Pharises assembled to Pilate,
27:63And said, Syr, we remember that that deceiuer saide, while he was yet aliue, Within three dayes I will rise.
27:64Command therefore, that the sepulchre be made sure vntill the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steale him away, and say vnto the people, He is risen from the dead: so shall the last errour be worse then the first.
27:65Then Pilate saide vnto them, Ye haue a watch: goe, and make it sure as ye knowe.
27:66And they went, and made the sepulchre sure with the watch, and sealed the stone.
