27:2And thei ledden him boundun, and bitoken to Pilat of Pounce, iustice.
27:3Thanne Judas that bitraiede hym, say that he was dampned, he repentide, and brouyte ayen the thretti pans to the princis of prestis, and to the elder men of the puple,
27:4and seide, Y haue synned, bitraiynge riytful blood. And thei seiden, What to vs? bise thee.
27:5And whanne he hadde cast forth the siluer in the temple, he passide forth, and yede, and hongide hym silf with a snare.
27:6And the princis of prestis token the siluer, and seide, It is not leueful to putte it in to the treserie, for it is the prijs of blood.
27:7And whanne thei hadden take counsel, thei bouyten with it a feeld of a potter, in to biryyng of pilgrymys.
27:8Herfor thilke feeld is clepid Acheldemac, that is, a feeld of blood, in to this dai.
27:9Thanne that was fulfillid, that was seid bi the prophete Jeremye, seiynge, And thei han takun thretti pans, the prijs of a man preysid, whom thei preiseden of the children of Israel;
27:10and thei yauen hem in to a feeld of a potter, as the Lord hath ordenyd to me.
27:11And Jhesus stood bifor the domesman; and the iustice axide him, and seide, Art thou king of Jewis?
27:12Jhesus seith to hym, Thou seist. And whanne he was accusid of the princis of prestis, and of the eldere men of the puple, he answeride no thing.
27:13Thanne Pilat seith to him, Herist thou not, hou many witnessyngis thei seien ayens thee?
27:14And he answeride not `to hym ony word, so that the iustice wondride greetli.
27:15But for a solempne dai the iustice was wont to delyuere to the puple oon boundun, whom thei wolden.
27:16And he hadde tho a famous man boundun, that was seid Barrabas.
27:17Therfor Pilate seide to hem, whanne thei weren to gidere, Whom wolen ye, that Y delyuere to you? whether Barabas, or Jhesu, that is seid Crist?
27:18For he wiste, that bi enuye thei bitraieden hym.
27:19And while he sat for domesman, his wijf sente to hym, and seide, No thing to thee and to that iust man; for Y haue suffrid this dai many thingis for hym, bi a visioun.
27:20Forsothe the prince of prestis, and the eldere men counseiliden the puple, that thei schulden axe Barabas, but thei schulden distrye Jhesu.
27:21But the iustice answeride, and seide to hem, Whom of the tweyn wolen ye, that be delyuerit to you? And thei seiden, Barabas.
27:22Pilat seith to hem, What thanne schal Y do of Jhesu, that is seid Crist?
27:23Alle seien, `Be he crucified. The iustice seith to hem, What yuel hath he doon? And thei crieden more, and seiden, Be he crucified.
27:24And Pilat seynge that he profitide no thing, but that the more noyse was maad, took watir, and waischide hise hondis bifor the puple, and seide, Y am giltles of the blood of this riytful man; bise you.
27:25And al the puple answeride, and seide, His blood be on vs, and on oure children.
27:26Thanne he deliuerede to hem Barabas, but he took to hem Jhesu scourgid, to be crucified.
27:27Thanne knyytis of the iustice token Jhesu in the moot halle, and gadriden to hym al the cumpeny `of knyytis.
27:28And thei vnclothiden hym, and diden aboute hym a reed mantil;
27:29and thei foldiden a coroun of thornes, and putten on his heed, and a rehed in his riyt hoond; and thei kneliden bifore hym, and scornyden hym, and seiden, Heil, kyng of Jewis.
27:30And thei speten on hym, and tooken a rehed, and smoot his heed.
27:31And aftir that thei hadden scorned him, thei vnclothiden hym of the mantil, and thei clothiden hym with hise clothis, and ledden hym to `crucifien hym.
27:32And as thei yeden out, thei founden a man of Cirenen comynge fro the toun, Symont bi name; thei constreyneden hym to take his cross.
27:33And thei camen in to a place that is clepid Golgatha, that is, the place of Caluarie.
27:34And thei yauen hym to drynke wyne meynd with galle; and whanne he hadde tastid, he wolde not drynke.
27:35And aftir that thei hadden crucified hym, thei departiden his clothis, and kesten lotte, to fulfille that is seid bi the prophete, seiynge, Thei partiden to hem my clothis, and on my clooth thei kesten lott.
27:36And thei seten, and kepten him;
27:37and setten aboue his heed his cause writun, This is Jhesu of Nazareth, kyng of Jewis.
27:38Thanne twey theues weren crucified with hym, oon on the riythalf, and oon on the lefthalf.
27:39And men that passiden forth blasfemeden hym,
27:40mouynge her heedis, and seiynge, Vath to thee, that distriest the temple of God, and in the thridde dai bildist it ayen; saue thou thi silf; if thou art the sone of God, come doun of the cross.
27:41Also and princis of prestis scornynge, with scribis and elder men,
27:42seiden, He made othere men saaf, he may not make hym silf saaf; if he is kyng of Israel, come he now doun fro the crosse, and we bileuen to hym;
27:43he tristide in God; delyuer he hym now, if he wole; for he seide, That Y am Goddis sone.
27:44And the theues, that weren crucified with hym, vpbreididen hym of the same thing.
27:45But fro the sixte our derknessis weren maad on al the erthe, to the nynthe our.
27:46And aboute the nynthe our Jhesus criede with a greet vois, and seide, Heli, Heli, lamazabatany, that is, My God, my God, whi hast thou forsake me?
27:47And summen that stoden there, and herynge, seiden, This clepith Helye.
27:48And anoon oon of hem rennynge, took and fillide a spounge with vynegre, and puttide on a rehed, and yaf to hym to drynke.
27:49But othir seiden, Suffre thou; se we whether Helie come to deliuer hym.
27:50Forsothe Jhesus eftsoone criede with a greet voyce, and yaf vp the goost.
27:51And lo! the veil of the temple was to-rent in twey parties, fro the hiest to the lowest. And the erthe schoke, and stoonus weren cloue; and birielis weren openyd,
27:52and many bodies of seyntis that hadden slepte, rysen vp.
27:53And thei yeden out of her birielis, and aftir his resurreccioun thei camen in to the holi citee, and apperiden to many.
27:54And the centurien and thei that weren with hym kepinge Jhesu, whanne thei saien the erthe schakynge, and tho thingis that weren doon, thei dredden greetli,
27:55and seiden, Verili this was Goddis sone. And ther weren there many wymmen afer, that sueden Jhesu fro Galilee, and mynystriden to hym.
27:56Among whiche was Marie Magdalene, and Marie, the modir of James, and of Joseph, and the modir of Zebedees sones.
27:57But whanne the euenyng was come, ther cam a riche man of Armathi, Joseph bi name, and he was a disciple of Jhesu.
27:58He wente to Pilat, and axide the bodi of Jhesu.
27:59Thanne Pilat comaundide the bodie to be youun. And whanne the bodi was takun, Joseph lappide it in a clene sendel,
27:60and leide it in his newe biriel, that he hadde hewun in a stoon; and he walewide a greet stoon to the dore of the biriel, and wente awei.
27:61But Marie Maudelene and anothir Marie weren there, sittynge ayens the sepulcre.
27:62And on `the tother dai, that is aftir pask euen, the princis of prestis and the Farisees camen togidere to Pilat,
27:63and seiden, Sir, we han mynde, that thilke giloure seide yit lyuynge, Aftir thre daies Y schal rise ayen to lijf.
27:64Therfor comaunde thou, that the sepulcre be kept in to the thridde dai; lest hise disciplis comen, and stelen hym, and seie to the puple, He hath rise fro deeth; and the laste errour schal be worse than the formere.
27:65Pilat seide to hem, Ye han the kepyng; go ye, kepe ye as ye kunnen.
27:66And thei yeden forth, and kepten the sepulcre, markynge the stoon, with keperis.

27:1When the mornynge was come all ye chefe prestes and the elders of ye people helde a counsayle agenst Iesu to put him to deeth
27:2and brought him bounde and delivered him vnto Poncius Pilate the debite.
27:3Then when Iudas which betrayed him sawe that he was condempned he repented him sylfe and brought ageyne the .xxx. plattes of sylver to ye chefe prestes and elders
27:4sayinge: I have synned betrayinge the innocent bloud. And they sayde: what is that to vs? Se thou to that.
27:5And he cast doune the sylver plattes in the temple and departed and went and hounge him sylfe.
27:6And the chefe prestes toke the sylver plattes and sayd: it is not lawfull for to put them in to the treasury because it is the pryce of bloud.
27:7And they toke counsell and bought with them a potters felde to bury strangers in.
27:8Wherfore that felde is called the felde of bloud vntyll this daye.
27:9Then was fulfylled that which was spoken by Ieremy the Prophet sayinge: and they toke .xxx. sylver plattes the prise of him that was valued whom they bought of the chyldren of Israel
27:10and they gave them for the potters felde as the Lorde appoynted me.
27:11Iesus stode before the debite: and the debite axed him sayinge: Arte thou the kynge of ye Iues? Iesus sayd vnto him: Thou sayest
27:12and when he was accused of ye chefe prestes and elders he answered nothinge.
27:13Then sayd Pilate vnto him: hearest thou not how many thinges they laye ageynste ye?
27:14And he answered him to never a worde: in so moche that the debite marveylled greatlie.
27:15At that feest the debite was wonte to deliver vnto ye people a presoner whom they wolde desyer.
27:16He had then a notable presoner called Barrabas.
27:17And when they were gadered together Pilate sayde vnto the: whether wyll ye that I geve losse vnto you Barrabas or Iesus which is called Christ?
27:18For he knewe well that for envie they had delivred him.
27:19When he was set doune to geve iudgemet his wyfe sent to him sayinge: have thou nothinge to do with that iuste man. For I have suffered many thinges this daye in a dreame about him.
27:20But the chefe preestes and the elders had parswaded the people that they shulde axe Barrabas and shulde destroye Iesus.
27:21Then the debite answered and sayde vnto them: whether of the twayne wyll ye that I let loosse vnto you? And they sayde Barrabas.
27:22Pilate sayde vnto them: what shall I do then with Iesus which is called Christ? They all sayde to him: let him be crucified.
27:23Then sayde the debite: what evyll hath he done? And they cryed the more sayinge: let him be crucified.
27:24When Pilate sawe that he prevayled nothinge but that moare busines was made he toke water and wasshed his hondes before ye people sayinge: I am innocent of the bloud of this iuste person and that ye shall se.
27:25Then answered all the people and sayde: his bloud be on vs and on oure chyldren.
27:26Then let he Barrabas loose vnto them and scourged Iesus and delivered him to be crucified.
27:27Then the soudeours of the debite toke Iesus vnto the comen hall and gaddered vnto him all the company.
27:28And they stripped him and put on him a purpyll roobe
27:29and platted a croune of thornes and put vpon his heed and a rede in his ryght honde: and bowed their knees before him and mocked him saying: hayle kinge of the Iewes:
27:30and spitted vpon him and toke the rede and smoote him on the heed.
27:31And when they had mocked him they toke the robe of him ageyne and put his awne reymet on him and leed him awaye to crucify him.
27:32And as they came out they fonnde a man of Cyren named Simon: him they compelled to beare his crosse.
27:33And whe they cam vnto ye place called Golgotha (that is to saye a place of deed mens sculles)
27:34they gave him veneger to drinke mengled with gall. And when he had tasted therof he wolde not drinke.
27:35When they had crucified him they parted his garmentes and did cast lottes: to fulfyll that was spoken by the prophet. They deuyded my garmetes amonge them: and apon my vesture did cast loottes.
27:36And they sate and watched him there.
27:37And they set vp over his heed the cause of his deeth written. This is Iesus the kynge of the Iewes.
27:38And ther were two theves crucified with him one on ye right honde and another on the lyfte.
27:39They that passed by revyled him waggynge ther heeddes
27:40and sayinge: Thou that destroyest the temple of God and byldest it in thre dayes save thy sylfe. If thou be ye sonne of God come doune from the crosse.
27:41Lykwyse also the hye prestes mockinge him with the scribes aud elders sayde:
27:42He saved other him sylfe he can not save. If he be ye kynge of Israel: let him now come doune from the crosse and we will beleve him.
27:43He trusted in God let him deliver him now yf he will have him: for he sayde I am the sonne of God.
27:44That same also the theves which were crucified with him cast in his tethe.
27:45From the sixte houre was there dercknes over all the londe vnto the nynth houre.
27:46And about ye nynth houre Iesus cryed with a loude voyce sayinge: Eli Eli lama asbathani. That is to saye my God my God why hast thou forsaken me?
27:47Some of them that stode there when they herde that sayde: This man calleth for Helyas.
27:48And streyght waye one of them ranne and toke a sponge and filled it full of veneger and put it on a rede and gave him to drinke.
27:49Other sayde let be: let vs se whyther Helyas will come and deliver him.
27:50Iesus cryed agayne with a lowde voyce and yelded vp the goost.
27:51And beholde the vayle of the temple dyd rent in twayne from ye toppe to the bottome and the erth dyd quake and the stones dyd rent
27:52and graves dyd open: and the bodies of many sainctes which slept arose
27:53and came out of ye graves after his resurreccion and came into the holy cite and appered vnto many.
27:54When the Centurion and they that were with him watchinge Iesus sawe ye erth quake and those thinges which hapened they feared greatly sayinge. Of a surete this was the sonne of God.
27:55And many wemen were there beholdinge him a farre of which folowed Iesus fro Galile ministringe vnto him.
27:56Amonge which was Mary Magdalen and Mary the mother of Iames and Ioses and ye mother of zebedes chyldren.
27:57When the even was come there came a ryche man of Aramathia named Ioseph which same also was Iesus disciple.
27:58He went to Pilate and begged the body of Iesus. Then Pilate commaunded the body to be delivered.
27:59And Ioseph toke the body and wrapped it in a clene lynnyn clooth
27:60and put it in his newe tombe which he had hewen out even in the roke and rolled a greate stone to the dore of ye sepulcre and departed.
27:61And there was Mary Magdalene and the other Mary sittynge over ageynste the sepulcre.
27:62The nexte daye that foloweth good frydaye the hye prestes and pharises got them selves to Pilate
27:63and sayde: Syr we remember yt this deceaver sayde whyll he was yet alyve After thre dayes I will aryse agayne.
27:64Commaunde therfore that the sepulcre be made sure vntyll ye thyrd daye lest paraventure his disciples come and steale him awaye and saye vnto the people he is rysen from deeth and the laste erroure be worsse then the fyrst.
27:65Pilate sayde vnto them. Take watche men: Go and make it as sure as ye can.
27:66And they went and made the sepulcre sure with watche men and sealed the stone.

27:1Vpon the morow, all the hye prestes and elders of the people helde a councell agaynst Iesus, that they might put him to death,
27:2and bounde him, and led him forth, and delyuered him vnto Pontius Pilate the debyte.
27:3When Iudas which betrayed him, sawe this that he was condemned vnto death, it repented him, and brought agayne the thirtie syluer pens to the hye prestes and the elders,
27:4and sayde: I haue done euell, in that I haue betrayed innocet bloude. They sayde: What haue we to do with yt? Se thou therto.
27:5And he cast the syluer pens in the teple, and gat him awaye, and wente and hanged him self.
27:6So the hye prestes toke the syluer pens, and sayde: It is not laufull to put them in to the Gods chest, for it is bloudmoney.
27:7Neuertheles they helde a councell, and bought with the a potters felde, for to burye straugers in.
27:8Wherfore the same felde is called the bloudfelde vnto this daye.
27:9Then was that fulfylled, which was spoken by Ieremy the prophet sayenge: And they toke thirtie syluer pens, the pryce of him that was solde, whom they bought of the children of Israell:
27:10and these they gaue for a potters felde, as the LORDE commaunded me.
27:11As for Iesus, he stode before the debyte, and the debyte axed him, and sayde: Art thou the kynge of the Iewes? And Iesus sayde vnto him: Thou sayest it.
27:12And wha he was accused of the hye prestes and elders, he answered nothinge.
27:13Then sayde Pylate vnto him: Hearest thou not, how sore they accuse the?
27:14And he answered him not one worde: in so moch that the debyte marueled exceadingly.
27:15At that feast, the debyte was wote to delyuer a presoner fre vnto the people, whom they wolde.
27:16And at the same tyme he had a notable presoner called Barrabas.
27:17And whan they were gathered together, Pylate sayde vnto them: Whether wil ye, that I geue lowse vnto you? Barrabas, or Iesus which is called Christ?
27:18For he knewe well that they had delyuered him of enuye.
27:19And wha he sat vpo the iudgmet seate, his wife sent vnto him, sayenge: Haue thou nothinge to do with that righteous man, for I haue suffred many thinges this daye in a dreame because of him.
27:20But the hye prestes and the elders persuaded the people, that they shulde axe Barrabas, and destroye Iesus.
27:21Then answered the debyte, & sayde vnto the: Whether of these two wyl ye yt I geue lowse vnto you? They sayde: Barrabas:
27:22Pylate sayde vnto them: What shal I do then with Iesus, which is called Christ? They sayde all: let him be crucified.
27:23The debyte saide: What euell hath he done the? Neuertheles they cried yet more and sayde, let him be crucified.
27:24So whan Pilate sawe, that he coude not helpe, but that there was a greater vproure, he toke water, and wasshed his handes before the people, and sayde: I am vngiltie of ye bloude of this righteous man. Se ye therto.
27:25Then answered all the people, and sayde: His bloude come vpon vs, and vpon oure children.
27:26Then gaue he Barrabas lowse vnto the, but caused Iesus be scourged, and delyuered him to be crucified.
27:27Then the debites soudyers toke Iesus, in to the comon hall, and gathered the whole multitude ouer him,
27:28and stryped him out of his clothes, and put a purple robe vpo him,
27:29and plated a crowne of thorne, & set it vpon his heade, and a rede in his hade, and kneled before him, and mocked him, and sayde: hayle kynge of the Iewes.
27:30And spytted vpon him, and toke ye rede, & smote him vpon the heade.
27:31And wha they had mocked hi, they toke the robe of him ageyne, & put his owne clothes vpon him, and led him forth, yt they might crucifie hi.
27:32And as they were goinge out, they founde a man of Cyren called Symon: him they compelled to beare his crosse.
27:33And when they came vnto the place called Golgatha (that is to saye by interpretacio a place of deed mens sculles)
27:34they gaue him to drynke, veneger myxte wt gall. And whan he had tasted therof, he wolde not drynke.
27:35So whan they had crucified him, they parted his garmetes, and cast lottes therfore: that the thinge might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the prophet: They haue parted my garmetes amonge the, & cast lottes vpon my vesture.
27:36And there they sat, and watched hi.
27:37And aboue ouer his heade, they put vp the cause of his death in wrytinge: namely: This is the kynge of the Iewes.
27:38Then were there two murthurers crucified with him, the one of the right hande, and the other on the left.
27:39They that wente by, reuyled him, and wagged their heades
27:40and sayde: Thou that breakest downe the teple of God, and buyldest it in thre dayes, helpe thyself. Yf thou be the sonne of God, come downe from the crosse.
27:41The hye prestes also in like maner with the scrybes & elders, laughed him to scorne, and sayde:
27:42he hath helped other, and can not helpe himself: Yf he be the kynge of Israel, let him come downe now from the crosse, and we wil beleue him
27:43He trusted in God, let him delyuer him now, yf he wil haue him. For he hath sayde: I am the sonne of God.
27:44The murtherers also that were crucified with him, cast the same in his tethe.
27:45And from ye sixte houre there was darcknes ouer the whole earth vnto the nyenth houre.
27:46And aboute the nyenth houre, Iesus cried with a loude voyce, and sayde: Eli, Eli, Lamma asabthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
27:47But some of the that stode there, when they herde yt sayde: He calleth Elias.
27:48And immediatly one of them ranne, and toke a spoge, and fylled it with veneger, and put it vpon a rede, and gaue him to dryncke.
27:49But ye other sayde: holde, let se whether Elias wyl come, and delyuer him.
27:50Iesus cried agayne with a loude voyce, and gaue vp the goost.
27:51And beholde, the vale of the temple was rente in two peces, from aboue tyll beneth, and the earth quaked, and the stones rent,
27:52and the graues opened, and many bodies of the sayntes that slepte, arose,
27:53and wete out of the graues after his resurreccion, and came in to the holy cite, and appeared vnto many.
27:54But the captayne and they that were with him, and kepte Iesus, when they sawe the earthquake and the thinges that were done, they were sore afrayed, and sayde: Verely this was Gods sonne.
27:55And there were many wemen there lokynge to afarre of, which had folowed Iesus from Galile, and had mynistred vnto him:
27:56amonge whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of Iames and Ioses, and the mother of the children of Zebede.
27:57At euen there came a rich man of Arimathia, called Ioseph, which was also a disciple of Iesus.
27:58He wete vnto Pylate, and axed the body of Iesus. Then commaunded Pylate that the body shulde be geue him.
27:59And Ioseph toke the body, and wrapped it in a cleane lynnen cloth,
27:60and layed it in his owne new sepulcre, which he had hewen out in a rocke, and rolled a greate stone to the dore of the sepulcre, and wente his waye.
27:61And there was Mary Magdalene and ye other Mary, syttinge ouer agaynst the sepulcre.
27:62The next daye that foloweth the daye of preparynge, the hye prestes and Pharises came together vnto Pylate,
27:63and saide: Syr, we haue called to remembraunce, that this disceauer sayde whyle he was yet alyue: After thre dayes I wyl ryse agayne.
27:64Comaunde therfore that the sepulcre be kepte vnto the thirde daye, lest peraduenture his disciples come, and steale him awaye, and saye vnto the people: He is rysen from the deed, and so shal the last errour be worse the the first.
27:65Pylate sayde vnto them: There haue ye watchme, go youre waye, and kepe it as ye can.
27:66They wete and kepte the sepulcre wt watchmen, and sealed the stone.
