Luke - Chapter: 1

>
1:1Forasmuch as many haue taken in hande to set foorth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely beleeued among vs,
1:2Euen as they deliuered them vnto vs, which from the beginning were eye-witnesses, & ministers of the word:
1:3It seemed good to me also, hauing had perfect vnderstanding of things from the very first, to write vnto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
1:4That thou mightest know the certainetie of those things wherein thou hast bene instructed.
1:5There was in the dayes of Herode the king of Iudea, a certaine Priest, named Zacharias, of the course of Abia, and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
1:6And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the Commandements and ordinances of the Lord, blamelesse.
1:7And they had no childe, because that Elizabeth was barren, and they both were now well striken in yeeres.
1:8And it came to passe, that while he executed the Priests office before God in the order of his course,
1:9According to the custome of the Priests office, his lot was to burne incense when he went into the Temple of the Lord.
1:10And the whole multitude of the people were praying without, at the time of incense.
1:11And there appeared vnto him an Angel of the Lord, standing on the right side of the Altar of incense.
1:12And when Zacharias sawe him, hee was troubled, and feare fell vpon him.
1:13But the Angel said vnto him, Feare not, Zacharias, for thy prayer is heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall beare thee a sonne, and thou shalt call his name Iohn.
1:14And thou shalt haue ioy and gladnesse, and many shall reioyce at his birth:
1:15For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shal drinke neither wine, nor strong drinke, and he shall bee filled with the holy Ghost, euen from his mothers wombe.
1:16And many of the children of Israel shall hee turne to the Lord their God.
1:17And hee shall goe before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turne the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisedome of the iust, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
1:18And Zacharias said vnto the Angel, Whereby shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife well striken in yeeres.
1:19And the Angel answering, said vnto him, I am Gabriel that stand in the presence of God, and am sent to speake vnto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
1:20And behold, thou shalt be dumbe, and not able to speake, vntill the day that these things shall bee performed, because thou beleeuest not my words, which shall bee fulfilled in their season.
1:21And the people waited for Zacharias, and maruelled that hee taried so long in the temple.
1:22And when he came out, he could not speake vnto them: and they perceiued that he had seene a vision in the temple: for he beckened vnto them, and remained speechlesse.
1:23And it came to passe, that as soone as the dayes of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his owne house.
1:24And after those dayes his wife Elizabeth conceiued, and hid her selfe fiue moneths, saying,
1:25Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the dayes wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproch among men.
1:26And in the sixt moneth, the Angel Gabriel was sent from God, vnto a citie of Galilee, named Nazareth,
1:27To a virgine espoused to a man whose name was Ioseph, of the house of Dauid, and the virgins name was Marie.
1:28And the Angel came in vnto her, and said, Haile thou that art highly fauoured, the Lord is with thee: Blessed art thou among women.
1:29And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her minde what maner of salutation this should be.
1:30And the Angel said vnto her, Feare not, Marie, for thou hast found fauour with God.
1:31And behold, thou shalt conceiue in thy wombe, and bring forth a sonne, and shalt call his name Iesus.
1:32He shall be great, and shall be called the sonne of the Highest, and the Lord God shall giue vnto him the throne of his father Dauid.
1:33And hee shall reigne ouer the house of Iacob for euer, and of his kingdome there shall be no end.
1:34Then said Marie vnto the Angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
1:35And the Angel answered and said vnto her, The holy Ghost shall come vpon thee, and the power of the Highest shall ouershadow thee. Therefore also that holy thing which shall bee borne of thee, shall bee called the sonne of God.
1:36And behold, thy cousin Elizabeth, she hath also conceiued a sonne in her old age, and this is the sixt moneth with her, who was called barren.
1:37For with God no thing shall be vnpossible.
1:38And Marie said, Behold the handmaide of the Lord, be it vnto me according to thy word: and the Angel departed from her.
1:39And Marie arose in those dayes, and went into the hill countrey with haste, into a citie of Iuda,
1:40And entred into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elizabeth.
1:41And it came to passe that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Marie, the babe leaped in her wombe, and Elizabeth was filled with the holy Ghost.
1:42And she spake out with a loud voyce, and saide, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruite of thy wombe.
1:43And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to mee?
1:44For loe, assoone as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine eares, the babe leaped in my wombe for ioy.
1:45And blessed is she that beleeued, for there shalbe a performance of those things, which were told her from the Lord.
1:46And Marie said, My soule doth magnifie the Lord.
1:47And my spirit hath reioyced in God my sauiour.
1:48For hee hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for behold, from hencefoorth all generations shall call me blessed.
1:49For he that is mighty hath done to mee great things, and holy is his Name.
1:50And his mercy is on them that feare him, from generation to generation.
1:51Hee hath shewed strength with his arme, he hath scattered the proud, in the imagination of their hearts.
1:52He hath put downe the mighty from their seates, and exalted them of low degree.
1:53Hee hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich hee hath sent emptie away.
1:54Hee hath holpen his seruant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,
1:55As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for euer.
1:56And Mary abode with her about three moneths, and returned to her owne house.
1:57Now Elizabeths full time came, that shee should be deliuered, and shee brought foorth a sonne.
1:58And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy vpon her, and they reioyced with her.
1:59And it came to passe that on the eight day they came to circumcise the childe, and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
1:60And his mother answered, and said, Not so, but he shalbe called Iohn.
1:61And they said vnto her, There is none of thy kinred that is called by this name.
1:62And they made signes to his father, how he would haue him called.
1:63And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is Iohn: and they marueiled all.
1:64And his mouth was opened immediatly, and his tongue loosed, and hee spake, and praised God.
1:65And feare came on all that dwelt round about them, and all these sayings were noised abroad thorowout all the hill countrey of Iudea.
1:66And all they that had heard them, layde them vp in their hearts, saying, What maner of childe shal this be? And the hand of the Lord was with him.
1:67And his father Zacharias was filled with the holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
1:68Blessed bee the Lord God of Israel, for hee hath visited and redeemed his people,
1:69And hath raised vp an horne of saluation for vs, in the house of his seruant Dauid,
1:70As he spake by the mouth of his holy Prophets, which haue bene since the world began:
1:71That wee should be saued from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate vs,
1:72To performe the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy Couenant,
1:73The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
1:74That hee would grant vnto vs, that wee beeing deliuered out of the hands of our enemies, might serue him without feare,
1:75In holinesse and righteousnesse before him, all the dayes of our life.
1:76And thou childe shalt bee called the Prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt goe before the face of the Lord to prepare his wayes.
1:77To giue knowledge of saluation vnto his people, by the remission of their sinnes,
1:78Through the tender mercy of our God, whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited vs,
1:79To giue light to them that sit in darknes, and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
1:80And the childe grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts, till the day of his shewing vnto Israel.

1:1Forasmuch as many haue taken in hand to set foorth the storie of those things, whereof we are fully persuaded,
1:2As they haue deliuered them vnto vs, which from the beginning saw them their selues, and were ministers of ye word,
1:3It seemed good also to me (most noble Theophilus) assoone as I had searched out perfectly all things from the beginning, to write vnto thee thereof from point to point,
1:4That thou mightest acknowledge the certaintie of those things, whereof thou hast bene instructed.
1:5In the time of Herod King of Iudea, there was a certaine Priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabet.
1:6Both were iust before God, and walked in all the commandements and ordinances of the Lord, without reproofe.
1:7And they had no childe, because that Elisabet was barren: and both were well stricken in age.
1:8And it came to passe, as he executed the Priestes office before God, as his course came in order,
1:9According to the custome of the Priests office, his lot was to burne incense, when he went into the Temple of the Lord.
1:10And the whole multitude of the people were without in prayer, while the incense was burning.
1:11Then appeared vnto him an Angel of the Lord standing at the right side of the altar of incense.
1:12And when Zacharias sawe him, he was troubled, and feare fell vpon him.
1:13But the Angel saide vnto him, Feare not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard, and thy wise Elisabet shall beare thee a sonne, and thou shalt call his name Iohn.
1:14And thou shalt haue ioy and gladnes, and many shall reioyce at his birth.
1:15For he shalbe great in the sight of the Lord, and shall neither drinke wine, nor strong drinke: and he shalbe filled with the holy Ghost, euen from his mothers wombe.
1:16And many of the children of Israel shall he turne to their Lord God.
1:17For he shall goe before him in the spirite and power of Elias, to turne the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisedome of the iust men, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
1:18Then Zacharias said vnto ye Angel, Whereby shall I knowe this? for I am an olde man, and my wife is of a great age.
1:19And the Angell answered, and sayde vnto him, I am Gabriel that stand in the presence of God, and am sent to speake vnto thee, and to shew thee these good tidings.
1:20And beholde, thou shalt be domme, and not be able to speake, vntill the day that these things be done, because thou beleeuedst not my words, which shalbe fulfilled in their season.
1:21Now the people waited for Zacharias, and marueiled that he taried so long in the Temple.
1:22And when hee came out, hee coulde not speake vnto them: then they perceiued that hee had seene a vision in the Temple: For he made signes vnto them, and remained domme.
1:23And it came to passe, when the daies of his office were fulfilled, that he departed to his owne house.
1:24And after those daies, his wife Elisabet conceiued, and hid her selfe fiue moneths, saying,
1:25Thus hath the Lord dealt with me, in the daies wherein he looked on me, to take from me my rebuke among men.
1:26And in the sixth moneth, the Angell Gabriel was sent from God vnto a citie of Galile, named Nazareth,
1:27To a virgin affianced to a man whose name was Ioseph, of the house of Dauid, and the virgins name was Marie.
1:28And the Angel went in vnto her, and said, Haile thou that art freely beloued: the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
1:29And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and thought what maner of salutation that should be.
1:30Then the Angel saide vnto her, Feare not, Marie: for thou hast found fauour with God.
1:31For loe, thou shalt conceiue in thy wobe, and beare a sonne, and shalt call his name Iesus.
1:32He shall be great, and shall be called the Sonne of the most High, and the Lord God shall giue vnto him the throne of his father Dauid.
1:33And hee shall reigne ouer the house of Iacob for euer, and of his kingdome shall bee none ende.
1:34Then sayde Marie vnto the Angel, How shall this be, seeing I knowe not man?
1:35And the Angel answered, and said vnto her, The holy Ghost shall come vpon thee, and the power of the most High shall ouershadowe thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall bee borne of thee, shall be called the Sonne of God.
1:36And behold, thy cousin Elisabet, she hath also conceiued a sonne in her olde age: and this is her sixt moneth, which was called barren.
1:37For with God shall nothing be vnpossible.
1:38Then Marie said, Behold the seruant of the Lord: be it vnto me according to thy woorde. So the Angel departed from her.
1:39And Marie arose in those daies, and went into ye hil countrey with hast to a citie of Iuda,
1:40And entred into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabet.
1:41And it came to passe, as Elisabet heard the salutation of Marie, the babe sprang in her bellie, and Elisabet was filled with the holy Ghost.
1:42And she cried with a loud voice, and saide, Blessed art thou among women, because the fruit of thy wombe is blessed.
1:43And whence commeth this to mee, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
1:44For loe, assoone as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine eares, the babe sprang in my bellie for ioye,
1:45And blessed is shee that beleeued: for those things shall be perfourmed, which were tolde her from the Lord.
1:46Then Marie sayde, My soule magnifieth the Lord,
1:47And my spirite reioyceth in God my Sauiour.
1:48For hee hath looked on the poore degree of his seruaunt: for beholde, from henceforth shall all ages call me blessed,
1:49Because hee that is mightie, hath done for me great things, and holy is his Name.
1:50And his mercie is from generation to generation on them that feare him.
1:51Hee hath shewed strength with his arme: hee hath scattered the proude in the imagination of their hearts.
1:52Hee hath put downe the mighty from their seates, and exalted them of lowe degree.
1:53Hee hath filled the hungrie with good things, and sent away the rich emptie.
1:54Hee hath vpholden Israel his seruaunt to be mindefull of his mercie
1:55(As hee hath spoken to our fathers, to wit, to Abraham, and his seede) for euer.
1:56And Marie abode with her about three moneths: after, shee returned to her owne house.
1:57Nowe Elisabets time was fulfilled, that shee should be deliuered, and shee brought foorth a sonne.
1:58And her neighbours, and cousins heard tell howe the Lord had shewed his great mercie vpon her, and they reioyced with her.
1:59And it was so that on the eight day they came to circumcise the babe, and called him Zacharias after the name of his father.
1:60But his mother answered, and saide, Not so, but he shalbe called Iohn.
1:61And they saide vnto her, There is none of thy kindred, that is named with this name.
1:62Then they made signes to his father, howe he would haue him called.
1:63So hee asked for writing tables, and wrote, saying, His name is Iohn, and they marueiled all.
1:64And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue, and he spake and praised God.
1:65Then feare came on all them that dwelt neere vnto them, and all these woordes were noised abroade throughout all the hill countrey of Iudea.
1:66And al they that heard them, laid them vp in their hearts, saying, What maner childe shall this be! and the hand of the Lord was with him.
1:67Then his father Zacharias was filled with the holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
1:68Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, because he hath visited and redeemed his people,
1:69And hath raised vp the horne of saluation vnto vs, in the house of his seruant Dauid,
1:70As he spake by ye mouth of his holy Prophets, which were since the world began, saying,
1:71That he would sende vs deliuerance from our enemies, and from the hands of all that hate vs,
1:72That he might shewe mercie towards our fathers, and remember his holy couenant,
1:73And the othe which he sware to our father Abraham.
1:74Which was, that he would graunt vnto vs, that we being deliuered out of the handes of our enemies, should serue him without feare,
1:75All the daies of our life, in holinesse and righteousnesse before him.
1:76And thou, babe, shalt be called the Prophet of the most High: for thou shalt goe before the face of the Lord, to prepare his waies,
1:77And to giue knowledge of saluation vnto his people, by the remission of their sinnes,
1:78Through ye tender mercy of our God, wherby the day spring from an hie hath visited vs,
1:79To giue light to them that sit in darknes, and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feete into the way of peace.
1:80And the childe grewe, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the wildernesse, til the day came that he should shewe him selfe vnto Israel.

1:1For as moche as many haue taken in hande to set forth the declaracion of those thinges, which are most surely to be beleued amonge vs,
1:2euen as they delyuered them vnto vs, whych from the begyndyng sawe them them selues with their eyes, and were ministers of the thinges that they declared:
1:3I determyned also (as sone as I had searched out dyligently all thinges from the begynnyng) that then I wolde wryte vnto the, good Theophilus:
1:4that thou myghtest knowe the certente of those thinges wherof thou hast bene infourmed.
1:5There was in the dayes of Herode the Kynge of Iurie, a certayne Preste named Zacharias of the course of Abia. And his wyfe was of the daughters of Aaron: and her name was Elizabeth:
1:6they were, both ryghteous before God, and walked in all the lawes and ordynaunces of the Lorde, that no man coulde fynde fawte with them.
1:7And they had no chylde, because that Elizabeth was barren, and they booth were now well stricken in age.
1:8And it came to passe, that whan Zachary executed the Preastes offyce before God, as hys course came
1:9(accordyng to the custome of the prestes office) hys lot fell to burne incence.
1:10And he went into the temple of the Lorde, & the whoale multitude of the people were without in prayer, whill the incense was a burninge.
1:11And ther appeared vnto him an Angell of the Lorde, standynge on the ryght syde of the aultare of incense.
1:12And when Zacharias sawe him, he was abashed, & feare cam on him.
1:13But the Angell sayde vnto him: feare not Zachary, for thy prayer is hearde. And thy wyfe Elizabeth shall beare the a sonne, and thou shalt call his name Iohn,
1:14and thou shalt haue ioye and gladnes, and many shall reioyce at his byrth.
1:15For he shalbe greate in the syght of the Lorde, and shall nether drincke wyne ner stronge drincke. And he shalbe fylled with the holy goost, euen from his mothers wombe:
1:16and many of the chyldren of Israel shall tourne to their Lord God.
1:17And he shall go before him in the sprite & power of Helias to tourne the hertes of the fathers to the children, and the vnbeleuers to the wysdome of the iuste men, to make readye a perfecte people for the Lorde.
1:18And Zacharias sayde vnto the angell: by what token shall I knowe this? For I am olde, and my wyfe well strycken in yeres.
1:19And the angell answered, and sayd vnto him. I am Gabriel, that stande in the presens of God, and am sent to speake vnto the: and to shewe the these glad tydinges.
1:20And beholde it shall come to passe, that thou shalt be domme, and not be hable to speake, vntill the daye that these thinges be performed, because thou beleuedst not my wordes, which shalbe fulfylled in their season.
1:21And the people wayted for Zacharias, and merueyled that he taryed in the temple.
1:22And when he came out, he coulde not speke vnto them. And they perceaued, that he had sene a visyon in the temple. And he beckened vnto them, and remayned speachlesse.
1:23And it fortuned, that as sone as the dayes of his office were out, he departed into his awne house.
1:24And after those dayes, his wyfe Elizabeth conceaued, & hid her selfe fyue monethes, sayinge:
1:25Thys wyse hath God dealte with me, in the dayes wherin he hath loked on me, to take from me my rebuke amonge men.
1:26And in the syxt moneth the angell Gabriel was sent from God vnto a cytie of Galile, named Nazareth,
1:27to a virgin spoused to a man, whose name was Ioseph, of the house of Dauid, and the virgins name was Mary.
1:28And the angell went in vnto her, and sayde. Hayle full of grace, the Lorde is with the: blessed art thou amonge wemen.
1:29When she sawe him, she was abasshed at his sayinge: and cast in her mynde, what maner of salutacion that shulde be.
1:30And the angell sayde vnto her: feare not Mary: for thou hast founde grace with God.
1:31Behold, thou shalt conceaue in thy wombe, & beare a sonne, & shalt call his name Iesus.
1:32He shalbe greate, & shalbe called the sonne of the hyest. And the Lorde God shall geue vnto him the seate of his father Dauid
1:33and he shall raygne ouer the house of Iacob for euer, and of his kyngdome there shalbe none ende.
1:34Then sayde Mary vnto the angell: How shall this be, seynge I knowe not a man?
1:35And the angell answered, & sayde vnto her. The holy goost shall come vpon the, and the power of the hyest shall ouer shaddowe the. Therfore also that holy thynge which shalbe borne, shalbe called the sonne of God.
1:36And beholde, thy cosyn Elizabeth, she hath also conceaued a sonne in her age. And this is her syxt moneth, which was called barren:
1:37for with God shall nothinge be vnpossible.
1:38And Mary sayde: beholde the hande mayden of the Lorde, be it vnto me according to thy worde, And the angell departed from her.
1:39And Mary arose in those dayes, & went into the mountayns with haste into the cytie of Iewrie,
1:40and entred into the house of Zachary, and saluted Elizabeth.
1:41And it fortuned, that whan Elizabeth hearde the salutacyon of Mary, the babe sprange in her wombe. And Elizabeth was fylled with the holy ghost,
1:42& cried with a loude voyce, and sayde: Blessed art thou among wemen, and blessed is the frute of thy wombe.
1:43And whence happeneth this to me, that the mother of my Lorde shulde come to me?
1:44For lo, as sone as the voyce of thy salutacion sownded in myne eares, the babe sprange in my wombe for ioye.
1:45And blessed art thou that hast beleued: for those thinges shalbe performed, which were tolde the from the Lorde.
1:46And Mary sayde. My soule magnifieth the Lord.
1:47And my sprete hath reioysed in God my sauyour
1:48For he hath loked on the lowe degre of hys hande mayden: for lo: now from hence forth shall all generacions call me blessed.
1:49Because he that is myghty, hath done to me greate thinges, & holye is his name.
1:50And his mercy is on them that feare him, from generacion to generacion.
1:51He hath shewed strength with his arme, he hath scattered them that are proude in the ymaginacyon of their herte.
1:52He hath putte downe the myghty from theyr seates, and exalted them of lowe degre.
1:53He hath fylled the hongrye with good thynges: and sent awaye the ryche emptye.
1:54He hath helped hys seruaunt Israel, in remembraunce of hys mercye.
1:55Euen as he promysed to oure fathers, Abraham, and to his seede for euer.
1:56And Mary abode with her aboute a .iij. monethes, and retourned agayne to her awne house.
1:57Elizabeths tyme came that she shulde be delyuered, and she brought forth a sonne.
1:58And her neyghboures and her cosyns hearde howe the Lorde had shewed greate mercy vpon her, and they reioysed with her.
1:59And it fortuned that in the eyght daye, they came to circumcyse the chylde: and called his name Zacharias, after the name of hys father.
1:60And his mother answered and sayde: not so but he shalbe called Iohn.
1:61And they sayd vnto her: Ther is none in thy kynred, that is named with this name:
1:62And they made sygnes to his father, howe he wolde haue him called.
1:63And he asked for wrytinge tables, and wrote, saying: his name is Iohn. And they maruelled all.
1:64And hys mouth was opened immediatly, & his tonge also, & he spake, and praysed God.
1:65And feare came on all them that dwelt nye vnto them. And all these sayinges were noysed abroade throughout all the hyll countre of Iurie:
1:66and all they that herde them layde them vp in their hertes, saying: What maner of chylde shall this be? And the hande of the Lorde was with him:
1:67And his father Zacharias was filled with the holy goost, and prophisyed sayinge?
1:68Praysed be the Lord God of Israel, for he hath visited and redemed his people:
1:69And hath raysed vp an horne of saluacion vnto vs, in the house of his seruaunt Dauid.
1:70Euen as he promysed by the mouth of his holy prophetes, which were sens the worlde began.
1:71That we shulde be saued from oure enemies, and from the hande of all that hate vs.
1:72That he wolde deale mercifully with oure fathers, and remember his holy couenaunt.
1:73And that he wolde performe the oothe, which he sware to oure father Abraham,
1:74for to geue vs. That we deliuered oute of the handes of oure enemies, might serue him with out feare,
1:75all the dayes of oure lyfe, in such holynes and rightewesnes as are accept before him
1:76And thou chylde shalt be called the Prophet of the hiest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lorde, to prepare his wayes:
1:77to geue knowlege of saluacyon vnto his people for the remission of synnes.
1:78Through the tender mercy of oure God, wherby the daye springe from an hye hath visited vs.
1:79To geue light to them that sate in darcknes & in the shadowe of deathe, to gyde oure fete into the waye of peace.
1:80And the child grewe and wexed strong in sprete, and was in wildernes, tyll the daye came, when he shulde shewe him selfe vnto the Israelites.
