Luke - Chapter: 1

>
1:1Seeing that many did take in hand to set in order a narration of the matters that have been fully assured among us,
1:2as they did deliver to us, who from the beginning became eye-witnesses, and officers of the Word, --
1:3it seemed good also to me, having followed from the first after all things exactly, to write to thee in order, most noble Theophilus,
1:4that thou mayest know the certainty of the things wherein thou wast instructed.
1:5There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the course of Abijah, and his wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elisabeth;
1:6and they were both righteous before God, going on in all the commands and righteousnesses of the Lord blameless,
1:7and they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and both were advanced in their days.
1:8And it came to pass, in his acting as priest, in the order of his course before God,
1:9according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot was to make perfume, having gone into the sanctuary of the Lord,
1:10and all the multitude of the people were praying without, at the hour of the perfume.
1:11And there appeared to him a messenger of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of the perfume,
1:12and Zacharias, having seen, was troubled, and fear fell on him;
1:13and the messenger said unto him, `Fear not, Zacharias, for thy supplication was heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear a son to thee, and thou shalt call his name John,
1:14and there shall be joy to thee, and gladness, and many at his birth shall joy,
1:15for he shall be great before the Lord, and wine and strong drink he may not drink, and of the Holy Spirit he shall be full, even from his mother's womb;
1:16and many of the sons of Israel he shall turn to the Lord their God,
1:17and he shall go before Him, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn hearts of fathers unto children, and disobedient ones to the wisdom of righteous ones, to make ready for the Lord, a people prepared.'
1:18And Zacharias said unto the messenger, `Whereby shall I know this? for I am aged, and my wife is advanced in her days?'
1:19And the messenger answering said to him, `I am Gabriel, who have been standing near before God, and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to proclaim these good news to thee,
1:20and lo, thou shalt be silent, and not able to speak, till the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou didst not believe my words, that shall be fulfilled in their season.'
1:21And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and wondering at his tarrying in the sanctuary,
1:22and having come out, he was not able to speak to them, and they perceived that a vision he had seen in the sanctuary, and he was beckoning to them, and did remain dumb.
1:23And it came to pass, when the days of his service were fulfilled, he went away to his house,
1:24and after those days, his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying --
1:25`Thus hath the Lord done to me, in days in which He looked upon `me', to take away my reproach among men.'
1:26And in the sixth month was the messenger Gabriel sent by God, to a city of Galilee, the name of which `is' Nazareth,
1:27to a virgin, betrothed to a man, whose name `is' Joseph, of the house of David, and the name of the virgin `is' Mary.
1:28And the messenger having come in unto her, said, `Hail, favoured one, the Lord `is' with thee; blessed `art' thou among women;'
1:29and she, having seen, was troubled at his word, and was reasoning of what kind this salutation may be.
1:30And the messenger said to her, `Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God;
1:31and lo, thou shalt conceive in the womb, and shalt bring forth a son, and call his name Jesus;
1:32he shall be great, and Son of the Highest he shall be called, and the Lord God shall give him the throne of David his father,
1:33and he shall reign over the house of Jacob to the ages; and of his reign there shall be no end.'
1:34And Mary said unto the messenger, `How shall this be, seeing a husband I do not know?'
1:35And the messenger answering said to her, `The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee, therefore also the holy-begotten thing shall be called Son of God;
1:36and lo, Elisabeth, thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month to her who was called barren;
1:37because nothing shall be impossible with God.'
1:38And Mary said, `Lo, the maid-servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to thy saying,' and the messenger went away from her.
1:39And Mary having arisen in those days, went to the hill-country, with haste, to a city of Judea,
1:40and entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
1:41And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe did leap in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,
1:42and spake out with a loud voice, and said, `Blessed `art' thou among women, and blessed `is' the fruit of thy womb;
1:43and whence `is' this to me, that the mother of my Lord might come unto me?
1:44for, lo, when the voice of thy salutation came to my ears, leap in gladness did the babe in my womb;
1:45and happy `is' she who did believe, for there shall be a completion to the things spoken to her from the Lord.'
1:46And Mary said, `My soul doth magnify the Lord,
1:47And my spirit was glad on God my Saviour,
1:48Because He looked on the lowliness of His maid-servant, For, lo, henceforth call me happy shall all the generations,
1:49For He who is mighty did to me great things, And holy `is' His name,
1:50And His kindness `is' to generations of generations, To those fearing Him,
1:51He did powerfully with His arm, He scattered abroad the proud in the thought of their heart,
1:52He brought down the mighty from thrones, And He exalted the lowly,
1:53The hungry He did fill with good, And the rich He sent away empty,
1:54He received again Israel His servant, To remember kindness,
1:55As He spake unto our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed -- to the age.'
1:56And Mary remained with her about three months, and turned back to her house.
1:57And to Elisabeth was the time fulfilled for her bringing forth, and she bare a son,
1:58and the neighbours and her kindred heard that the Lord was making His kindness great with her, and they were rejoicing with her.
1:59And it came to pass, on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child, and they were calling him by the name of his father, Zacharias,
1:60and his mother answering said, `No, but he shall be called John.'
1:61And they said unto her -- `There is none among thy kindred who is called by this name,'
1:62and they were making signs to his father, what he would wish him to be called,
1:63and having asked for a tablet, he wrote, saying, `John is his name;' and they did all wonder;
1:64and his mouth was opened presently, and his tongue, and he was speaking, praising God.
1:65And fear came upon all those dwelling around them, and in all the hill-country of Judea were all these sayings spoken of,
1:66and all who heard did lay them up in their hearts, saying, `What then shall this child be?' and the hand of the Lord was with him.
1:67And Zacharias his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and did prophesy, saying,
1:68`Blessed `is' the Lord, the God of Israel, Because He did look upon, And wrought redemption for His people,
1:69And did raise an horn of salvation to us, In the house of David His servant,
1:70As He spake by the mouth of His holy prophets, Which have been from the age;
1:71Salvation from our enemies, And out of the hand of all hating us,
1:72To do kindness with our fathers, And to be mindful of His holy covenant,
1:73An oath that He sware to Abraham our father,
1:74To give to us, without fear, Out of the hand of our enemies having been delivered,
1:75To serve Him, in holiness and righteousness Before Him, all the days of our life.
1:76And thou, child, Prophet of the Highest Shalt thou be called; For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord, To prepare His ways.
1:77To give knowledge of salvation to His people In remission of their sins,
1:78Through the tender mercies of our God, In which the rising from on high did look upon us,
1:79To give light to those sitting in darkness and death-shade, To guide our feet to a way of peace.'
1:80And the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit, and he was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

1:1Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
1:2Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;
1:3It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
1:4That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
1:5There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
1:6And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
1:7And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.
1:8And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,
1:9According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.
1:10And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.
1:11And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
1:12And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
1:13But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
1:14And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
1:15For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
1:16And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
1:17And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
1:18And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
1:19And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
1:20And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
1:21And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
1:22And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
1:23And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
1:24And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
1:25Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
1:26And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
1:27To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
1:28And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
1:29And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
1:30And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
1:31And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
1:32He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
1:33And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
1:34Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
1:35And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
1:36And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
1:37For with God nothing shall be impossible.
1:38And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
1:39And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
1:40And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
1:41And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
1:42And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
1:43And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
1:44For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
1:45And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
1:46And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
1:47And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
1:48For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
1:49For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
1:50And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
1:51He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
1:52He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
1:53He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
1:54He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
1:55As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.
1:56And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
1:57Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
1:58And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.
1:59And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
1:60And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
1:61And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
1:62And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
1:63And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
1:64And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.
1:65And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.
1:66And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
1:67And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
1:68Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
1:69And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
1:70As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
1:71That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
1:72To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
1:73The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
1:74That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
1:75In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
1:76And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
1:77To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
1:78Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
1:79To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
1:80And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

1:1Since many took in hand to draw up an account concerning the matters having been borne out among us,
1:2as those from the beginning delivered to us, becoming eye-witnesses and ministers of the word,
1:3it seemed good also to me, having traced out all things accurately from the first, to write in order to you, most excellent Theophilus,
1:4that you may know the certainty concerning the words which you were taught.
1:5In the days of Herod the king of Judea, there was a certain priest named Zacharias, of the daily course of Abijah. And his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
1:6And they were both righteous before God, walking blameless in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.
1:7And no child was born to them, because Elizabeth was barren. And both were advanced in their days.
1:8And it happened in his serving as priest in the order of his course before God,
1:9according to the custom of the priests, entering into the Holy Place of the Lord, it was Zacharias' lot to burn incense.
1:10And all the multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense.
1:11And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right of the altar of incense.
1:12And seeing this , Zacharias was troubled, and fear fell on him.
1:13But the angel said to him, Do not fear, Zacharias, because your prayer was heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear a son to you, and you shall call his name John.
1:14And he will be joy and exultation to you, and many will rejoice over his birth.
1:15For he shall be great in the eyes of the Lord, and he shall not drink wine or strong drink. And he will be filled of the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.
1:16And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God.
1:17And he will go out before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah "to turn the hearts of fathers to their children," and disobedient ones to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people having been prepared for the Lord. Mal. 4:5, 6
1:18And Zacharias said to the angel, By what shall I know this? For I am old and my wife is advanced in her days.
1:19And answering, the angel said to him, I am Gabriel, who stands before God, and I was sent to speak to you and to announce to you the good news of these things.
1:20And behold, you shall be silent and not able to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words which shall be fulfilled in their season.
1:21And the people were expecting Zacharias, and they wondered at his delay in the Holy Place.
1:22But coming out, he was not able to speak to them, and they recognized that he had seen a vision in the Holy Place. And he was making signs to them and continued dumb.
1:23And it happened when the days of his service were fulfilled, he went away to his house.
1:24And after these days his wife Elizabeth conceived. And she hid herself five months, saying,
1:25So has the Lord done to me in the days in which He looked on me to take away my reproach among men.
1:26And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
1:27to a virgin who had been betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mariam.
1:28And entering, the angel said to her, Hail, one having received grace! The Lord is with you. You are blessed among women!
1:29And seeing this , she was disturbed at his word, and considered what kind of greeting this might be.
1:30And the angel said to her, Do not fear, Mariam, for you have found favor from God.
1:31And behold! You will conceive in your womb and bear a Son, and you will call His name Jesus.
1:32This One will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.
1:33And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of His kingdom there will be no end.
1:34But Mariam said to the angel, How will this be since I do not know a man?
1:35And answering, the angel said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you, and for this reason that Holy One being born of you will be called Son of God.
1:36And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth! She also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month to her who was called barren;
1:37for nothing shall be impossible with God.
1:38And Mariam said, Behold, the slave of the Lord! May it be to me according to your word. And the angel departed from her.
1:39And rising up in these days, Mariam went into the hill country with haste to a city of Judah.
1:40And she entered into the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.
1:41And it happened, as Elizabeth heard Mariam's greeting, the babe in her womb leaped, and Elizabeth was filled of the Holy Spirit.
1:42And she cried out with a loud voice and said, Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
1:43And why is this to me that the mother of my Lord comes to me?
1:44For behold, as the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped in exultation.
1:45And blessed is she believing, because there will be a completion to the things spoken to her from the Lord.
1:46And Mariam said, My soul magnifies the Lord,
1:47and my spirit exulted in God My Savior.
1:48For He looked upon the humiliation of His slave woman. For, behold, from now on all generations will count me blessed. 1 Sam. 1:11
1:49For the Mighty One did great things to me, and holy is His name.
1:50And His mercy is to generations of generations to those fearing Him. Psa. 103:17
1:51He performed mightily with His arm; He scattered proud ones in the thought of their heart.
1:52He put down powerful ones from thrones, and exalted lowly ones.
1:53He filled the hungry with good things, and He sent the rich away empty.
1:54He helped His servant Israel in order to remember mercy,
1:55even as He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed forever.
1:56And Mariam remained with her about three months, and returned to her house.
1:57And the time was fulfilled to Elizabeth for her to bear, and she bore a son.
1:58And the neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord magnified His mercy with her, and they rejoiced with her.
1:59And it happened on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child and were calling it by his father's name, Zacharias.
1:60And his mother answered, saying, Not so, but he shall be called John.
1:61And they said to her, No one is among your kindred who is called by this name.
1:62And they signaled to his father, what he might desire him to be called.
1:63And asking for a writing tablet, he wrote, saying, John is his name. And all marveled.
1:64And instantly his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed , and he spoke, blessing God.
1:65And fear came on all those living around them. And in all the hill country of Judea all these things were talked about.
1:66And all who heard laid them up in their hearts, saying, What then will this child be? And the hand of the Lord was with him.
1:67And his father Zacharias was filled of the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying,
1:68Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, because He visited and worked redemption for His people.
1:69And He raised up a Horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David;
1:70even as He spoke through the mouth of His holy prophets from the age before :
1:71Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all those hating us,
1:72to execute mercy with our fathers, and to remember His holy covenant,
1:73the oath which He swore to our father Abraham,
1:74to give to us, that we being delivered out of our enemies' hand, in order to serve Him without fear,
1:75in consecration and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.
1:76And you, child, will be called Prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways, Mal. 3:1
1:77to give a knowledge of salvation to His people by remission of their sins,
1:78through the tender bowels of mercy of our God, in which the Dayspring from on high will visit us,
1:79to appear to those sitting in darkness and in shadow of death, to direct our feet into the way of peace. Isa. 9:2
1:80And the child grew, and became strong in spirit. And he was in the deserts until the day of his showing to Israel.
