Luke - Chapter: 1

>
1:1Seeing that many did take in hand to set in order a narration of the matters that have been fully assured among us,
1:2as they did deliver to us, who from the beginning became eye-witnesses, and officers of the Word, --
1:3it seemed good also to me, having followed from the first after all things exactly, to write to thee in order, most noble Theophilus,
1:4that thou mayest know the certainty of the things wherein thou wast instructed.
1:5There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the course of Abijah, and his wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elisabeth;
1:6and they were both righteous before God, going on in all the commands and righteousnesses of the Lord blameless,
1:7and they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and both were advanced in their days.
1:8And it came to pass, in his acting as priest, in the order of his course before God,
1:9according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot was to make perfume, having gone into the sanctuary of the Lord,
1:10and all the multitude of the people were praying without, at the hour of the perfume.
1:11And there appeared to him a messenger of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of the perfume,
1:12and Zacharias, having seen, was troubled, and fear fell on him;
1:13and the messenger said unto him, `Fear not, Zacharias, for thy supplication was heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear a son to thee, and thou shalt call his name John,
1:14and there shall be joy to thee, and gladness, and many at his birth shall joy,
1:15for he shall be great before the Lord, and wine and strong drink he may not drink, and of the Holy Spirit he shall be full, even from his mother's womb;
1:16and many of the sons of Israel he shall turn to the Lord their God,
1:17and he shall go before Him, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn hearts of fathers unto children, and disobedient ones to the wisdom of righteous ones, to make ready for the Lord, a people prepared.'
1:18And Zacharias said unto the messenger, `Whereby shall I know this? for I am aged, and my wife is advanced in her days?'
1:19And the messenger answering said to him, `I am Gabriel, who have been standing near before God, and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to proclaim these good news to thee,
1:20and lo, thou shalt be silent, and not able to speak, till the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou didst not believe my words, that shall be fulfilled in their season.'
1:21And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and wondering at his tarrying in the sanctuary,
1:22and having come out, he was not able to speak to them, and they perceived that a vision he had seen in the sanctuary, and he was beckoning to them, and did remain dumb.
1:23And it came to pass, when the days of his service were fulfilled, he went away to his house,
1:24and after those days, his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying --
1:25`Thus hath the Lord done to me, in days in which He looked upon `me', to take away my reproach among men.'
1:26And in the sixth month was the messenger Gabriel sent by God, to a city of Galilee, the name of which `is' Nazareth,
1:27to a virgin, betrothed to a man, whose name `is' Joseph, of the house of David, and the name of the virgin `is' Mary.
1:28And the messenger having come in unto her, said, `Hail, favoured one, the Lord `is' with thee; blessed `art' thou among women;'
1:29and she, having seen, was troubled at his word, and was reasoning of what kind this salutation may be.
1:30And the messenger said to her, `Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God;
1:31and lo, thou shalt conceive in the womb, and shalt bring forth a son, and call his name Jesus;
1:32he shall be great, and Son of the Highest he shall be called, and the Lord God shall give him the throne of David his father,
1:33and he shall reign over the house of Jacob to the ages; and of his reign there shall be no end.'
1:34And Mary said unto the messenger, `How shall this be, seeing a husband I do not know?'
1:35And the messenger answering said to her, `The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee, therefore also the holy-begotten thing shall be called Son of God;
1:36and lo, Elisabeth, thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month to her who was called barren;
1:37because nothing shall be impossible with God.'
1:38And Mary said, `Lo, the maid-servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to thy saying,' and the messenger went away from her.
1:39And Mary having arisen in those days, went to the hill-country, with haste, to a city of Judea,
1:40and entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
1:41And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe did leap in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,
1:42and spake out with a loud voice, and said, `Blessed `art' thou among women, and blessed `is' the fruit of thy womb;
1:43and whence `is' this to me, that the mother of my Lord might come unto me?
1:44for, lo, when the voice of thy salutation came to my ears, leap in gladness did the babe in my womb;
1:45and happy `is' she who did believe, for there shall be a completion to the things spoken to her from the Lord.'
1:46And Mary said, `My soul doth magnify the Lord,
1:47And my spirit was glad on God my Saviour,
1:48Because He looked on the lowliness of His maid-servant, For, lo, henceforth call me happy shall all the generations,
1:49For He who is mighty did to me great things, And holy `is' His name,
1:50And His kindness `is' to generations of generations, To those fearing Him,
1:51He did powerfully with His arm, He scattered abroad the proud in the thought of their heart,
1:52He brought down the mighty from thrones, And He exalted the lowly,
1:53The hungry He did fill with good, And the rich He sent away empty,
1:54He received again Israel His servant, To remember kindness,
1:55As He spake unto our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed -- to the age.'
1:56And Mary remained with her about three months, and turned back to her house.
1:57And to Elisabeth was the time fulfilled for her bringing forth, and she bare a son,
1:58and the neighbours and her kindred heard that the Lord was making His kindness great with her, and they were rejoicing with her.
1:59And it came to pass, on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child, and they were calling him by the name of his father, Zacharias,
1:60and his mother answering said, `No, but he shall be called John.'
1:61And they said unto her -- `There is none among thy kindred who is called by this name,'
1:62and they were making signs to his father, what he would wish him to be called,
1:63and having asked for a tablet, he wrote, saying, `John is his name;' and they did all wonder;
1:64and his mouth was opened presently, and his tongue, and he was speaking, praising God.
1:65And fear came upon all those dwelling around them, and in all the hill-country of Judea were all these sayings spoken of,
1:66and all who heard did lay them up in their hearts, saying, `What then shall this child be?' and the hand of the Lord was with him.
1:67And Zacharias his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and did prophesy, saying,
1:68`Blessed `is' the Lord, the God of Israel, Because He did look upon, And wrought redemption for His people,
1:69And did raise an horn of salvation to us, In the house of David His servant,
1:70As He spake by the mouth of His holy prophets, Which have been from the age;
1:71Salvation from our enemies, And out of the hand of all hating us,
1:72To do kindness with our fathers, And to be mindful of His holy covenant,
1:73An oath that He sware to Abraham our father,
1:74To give to us, without fear, Out of the hand of our enemies having been delivered,
1:75To serve Him, in holiness and righteousness Before Him, all the days of our life.
1:76And thou, child, Prophet of the Highest Shalt thou be called; For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord, To prepare His ways.
1:77To give knowledge of salvation to His people In remission of their sins,
1:78Through the tender mercies of our God, In which the rising from on high did look upon us,
1:79To give light to those sitting in darkness and death-shade, To guide our feet to a way of peace.'
1:80And the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit, and he was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

1:1For as moche as many have take in hand to compyle a treates of thoo thinges which are surely knowen amonge vs
1:2even as they declared them vnto vs which from the beginnynge sawe them their selves and were ministers at the doyng:
1:3I determined also assone as I had searched out diligently all thinges from the beginnynge that then I wolde wryte vnto the good Theophilus:
1:4that thou myghtest knowe the certente of thoo thinges wher of thou arte informed.
1:5There was in the dayes of Herode kynge of Iurie a certayne prest named Zacharias of ye course of Abia. And his wyfe was of ye doughters of Aaron: And her name was Elizabeth.
1:6Booth were perfect before God and walked in all the lawes and ordinaces of the Lorde that no man coulde fynde fawte with them.
1:7And they had no chylde because that Elizabeth was barre and booth were well stricken in age.
1:8And it cam to passe as he executed the prestes office before god as his course came
1:9(accordinge to the custome of the prestes office) his lot was to bourne incece.
1:10And wet into ye teple of ye Lorde and the whoale multitude of ye people were with out in prayer whill the incense was aburnynge.
1:11And ther appered vnto him an angell of the lorde stondinge on the ryght syde of the altare of incense.

1:13And the angell sayde vnto him: feare not Zachary for thy prayer is hearde: And thy wyfe Elizabeth shall beare ye a sonne and thou shalt call his name Iohn
1:14and thou shalt have ioye and gladnes and many shall reioyce at his birth.
1:15For he shalbe greate in the sight of the lorde and shall nether drinke wyne ner stronge drinke. And he shalbe filled with the holy goost even in his mothers wombe:
1:16and many of the chyldren of Israel shall he tourne to their Lorde God.
1:17And he shall goo before him in the sprete and power of Helyas to tourne the hertes of the fathers to the chyldren and the vnbelevers to the wysdom of the iuste men: to make the people redy for the Lorde.
1:18And Zacharias sayde vnto ye angell: Wher by shall I knowe this? seinge that I am olde and my wyfe well stricken in yeares.
1:19And the angell answered and sayde vnto him: I am Gabriell that stonde in the presens of God and am sent to speake vnto the: and to shewe the these glad tydinges.
1:20And beholde thou shalt be domme and not able to speake vntyll the tyme that these thinges be performed because thou belevedst not my wordes which shalbe fulfilled in their season.
1:21And the people wayted for Zacharias and mervelled that he taryed in the temple.
1:22And whe he cam oute he could not speake vnto them. Wherby they perceaved that he had sene some vision in the temple. And he beckened vnto them and remayned speachlesse.
1:23And it fortuned assone as ye tyme of his office was oute he departed home into his awne housse.
1:24And after thoose dayes his wyfe Elizabeth coceaved and hyd her sylfe .v. monethes sayinge:
1:25This wyse hath God dealte wt me in ye dayes when he loked on me to take from me the rebuke yt I suffred amonge men.
1:26And in ye .vi. moneth ye angell Gabriel was sent fro god vnto a cite of Galile named Nazareth

1:29When she sawe him she was abasshed at his sayinge: and cast in her mynde what maner of salutacion yt shuld be.
1:30And ye angell sayde vnto her: feare not Mary: for thou hast founde grace wt god.

1:33and he shall raygne over ye housse of Iacob forever and of his kyngdome shalbe none ende.
1:34Then sayd Mary vnto ye angell: How shall this be seinge I knowe not a man?
1:35And ye angell answered and sayd vnto her: The holy goost shall come apon the and ye power of ye hyest shall over shaddowe ye. Therfore also yt holy thinge which shalbe borne shalbe called ye sonne of god.
1:36And beholde thy cosen Elizabeth she hath also conceaved a sonne in her age. And this is hyr sixte moneth though she be called barren:
1:37for wt god can nothinge be vnpossible.
1:38And Mary sayd: beholde ye honde mayden of ye lorde be it vnto me even as thou hast sayde. And the angell departed from her.

1:43And whence hapeneth this to me that the mother of my Lorde shuld come to me?
1:44For loo assone as the voyce of thy salutacion sownded in myne eares the babe sprange in my belly for ioye.
1:45And blessed arte thou that belevedst: for thoose thinges shalbe performed wich were tolde ye from the lorde.
1:46And Mary sayde. My soule magnifieth the Lorde.
1:47And my sprete reioyseth in god my savioure
1:48For he hath loked on the povre degre of his honde mayde. Beholde now from hence forth shall all generacions call me blessed.
1:49For he that is myghty hath done to me greate thinges and holye is his name.
1:50And his mercy is on them that feare him thorow oute all generacions.
1:51He sheweth strength with his arme he scattereth them that are proude in the ymaginacion of their hertes.
1:52He putteth doune the myghty from their seates and exalteth them of lowe degre.
1:53He filleth the hongry with good thinges: and sendeth awaye the ryche emptye.
1:54He remenbreth mercy: and helpeth his servaunt Israel.
1:55Even as he promised to oure fathers Abraham and to his seede for ever.
1:56And mary aboode with hyr aboute a .iii. monethes and retourned agayne to hyr awne housse.
1:57Elizabethes tyme was come that she shuld be delyvered and she brought forth a sonne.

1:59And it fortuned ye eyght daye: they cam to circumcise the chylde: and called his name zacharias after the name of his father.
1:60How be it his mother answered and sayd: not so but he shalbe called Ihon.
1:61And they sayd vnto hyr: Ther is none of thy kynne that is named wt this name.
1:62And they made signes to his father how he wolde have him called.
1:63And he axed for wrytynge tables and wroote saying: his name is Iohn. And they marvelled all.
1:64And his mouthe was opened immediatly and his tonge also and he spake lawdynge God.

1:1For so moch as many haue taken in hande, to set forth ye wordes of the actes that are come to passe amonge vs,
1:2like as they delyuered the vnto vs, which from the begynnynge sawe them their selues, and were mynisters of the worde,

1:5In the tyme of Herode kynge of Iewry, there was a prest named Zachary of the course of Abia: and his wife of the doughters of Aaron, & hir name Elizabeth.
1:6They were both righteous before God, and walked in all the commaundementes and statutes of the LORDE vnreproueably.

1:16And many of the children of Israel shal he turne vnto the LORDE their God.
1:17And he shal go before him in the sprete and power of Elias, to turne the hertes of ye fathers vnto the children, and the vnfaithfull vnto the wyssdome of the righteous, to make the people ready for the LORDE.
1:18And Zachary sayde vnto the Angel: Wherby shal I knowe this? For I am olde, and my wife well stricken in age.
1:19The angell answered, and sayde vnto him: I am Gabriell that stonde before God, and am sent to speake vnto the, and to shewe the these glad tydinges.

1:23And it fortuned wha the tyme of his office was out, he wente home in to his house.
1:24And after those dayes Elizabeth his wife conceaued, and hyd hir self fyue monethes, & sayde:
1:25Thus hath ye LORDE done vnto me in ye dayes, wherin he hath loked vpo me, to take awaye fro me my rebuke amoge men.
1:26And in the sixte moneth was the angell Gabriel sent from God in to a cite of Galile, called Nazareth,

1:28And the angell came in vnto her, and sayde: Hayle thou full of grace, the LORDE is with the: blessed art thou amonge wemen.
1:29Wha she sawe him, she was abasshed at his sayenge, and thought: What maner of salutacion is this?
1:30And the angell sayde vnto her: Feare not Mary, for thou hast foude grace with God.
1:31Beholde, thou shalt coceaue in thy wobe, & beare a sonne & shalt call his name Iesus:
1:32he shalbe greate, & shalbe called ye sonne of the Hyest. And the LORDE God shal geue him ye seate of Dauid his father,
1:33& he shal be kinge ouer ye house of Iacob for euer & there shalbe no ende of his kyngdome.
1:34Then sayde Mary vnto the angell: How shal this be, seinge I knowe not a ma?
1:35The angell answered, & sayde vnto her: The holy goost shal come vpon the, & the power of the Hyest shal ouershadowe the. Therfore that Holy also which shalbe borne (of the) shalbe called the sonne of God.
1:36And beholde, thy cosen Elizabeth she also hath coceaued a sonne in hir olde age, & this is the sixte moneth of her, which is reported to be baren:
1:37for wt God is nothinge vnpossyble.
1:38And Mary sayde: Beholde, here am I the handmayde of the LORDE: be it vnto me, as thou hast sayde. And the angell departed fro her.
1:39And Mary arose in those dayes,and wente in to the moutaynes with haist, into ye cite of Iewry,
1:40and came in to ye house of Zachary, and saluted Elizabeth.
1:41And it fortuned as Elizabeth herde the salutacion of Mary, the babe sprange in hir wombe. And Elizabeth was fylled with the holy goost,

1:43And how happeneth this to me, that ye mother of my LORDE commeth vnto me?
1:44Beholde, whan I herde the voyce of thy salutacion, the babe sprange in my wombe wt ioye,
1:45And blessed art thou that hast beleued, for ye thinges shalbe perfourmed, which were tolde ye fro ye LORDE.
1:46And Mary sayde:My soule magnifieth the LORDE.
1:47And my sprete reioyseth i God my Sauioure.
1:48For he hath loked vpo the lowe degre of his hande mayde. Beholde, fro hence forth shal all generacions call me blessed.
1:49For he that is Mightie, hath done greate thinges vnto me, and holy is his name.
1:50And his mercy endureth thorow out all generacions, vpon them that feare him.
1:51He sheweth strength with his arme, and scatreth them that are proude in the ymaginacion of their hert.
1:52He putteth downe the mightie from the seate, and exalteth them of lowe degre.

1:56And Mary abode with her aboute thre monethes, and then returned home agayne.

1:61And they sayde vnto her: There is none in yi kynne, yt is so called.
1:62And they made signes vnto his father, how he wolde haue him called.
1:63And he axed for wrytinge tables, wrote & sayde: His name is Ihon. And they marueyled all.
1:64And immediatly was his mouth and his toge opened, and he spake, & praysed God.

1:68Blessed be ye LORDE God of Israel, for he hath vysited and redemed his people.
1:69And hath set vp an horne of saluacion in the house of his seruaunt Dauid.
1:70Euen as he promysed afore tyme, by the mouth of his holy prophetes.

1:72And yt he wolde shewe mercy vnto oure fathers, & thynke vpo his holy couenaut.
1:73Euen the ooth yt he sware vnto oure father Abraham,
1:74for to geue vs.That we delyuered out of ye hade of or enemies, might serue him without feare

1:76And thou childe shalt be called a prophet of the Hyest: for thou shalt go before ye LORDE, to prepare his wayes.
1:77And to geue knowlege of saluacion vnto his people, for the remyssion of their synnes.
1:78Thorow the tender mercy of oure God, wherby the daye sprynge from an hye hath vysited vs.
1:79That he might geue light vnto them yt syt in darcknesse and shadowe of death, and to gyde oure fete in to the waye of peace.
1:80And the childe grew, and waxed stronge in sprete, and was in the wyldernes, tyll the tyme that he shulde shewe him self vnto the people of Israel.
