| 20:1 | And it came to passe, that on one of those dayes, as he taught the people in the Temple, and preached the Gospel, the chiefe Priests and the Scribes came vpon him, with the Elders, |
| 20:2 | And spake vnto him, saying, Tell vs, by what authoritie doest thou these things? or who is hee that gaue thee this authoritie? |
| 20:3 | And hee answered, and said vnto them, I will also aske you one thing, and answere me. |
| 20:4 | The Baptisme of Iohn, was it from heauen, or of men? |
| 20:5 | And they reasoned with themselues, saying, If wee shall say, From heauen, he will say, Why then beleeued yee him not? |
| 20:6 | But and if we say, Of men, all the people will stone vs: for they be perswaded that Iohn was a Prophet. |
| 20:7 | And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was. |
| 20:8 | And Iesus said vnto them, Neither tell I you by what authoritie I doe these things. |
| 20:9 | Then began hee to speake to the people this parable: A certaine man planted a vineyard, and let it foorth to husbandmen, and went into a farre countrey for a long time. |
| 20:10 | And at the season, hee sent a seruant to the husbandmen, that they should giue him of the fruit of the vineyard, but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away emptie. |
| 20:11 | And againe hee sent another seruant, and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away emptie. |
| 20:12 | And againe he sent the third, and they wounded him also, & cast him out. |
| 20:13 | Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I doe? I will send my beloued sonne: it may be they will reuerence him when they see him. |
| 20:14 | But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselues, saying, This is ye heire, come, let vs kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. |
| 20:15 | So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard doe vnto them? |
| 20:16 | Hee shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall giue the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid. |
| 20:17 | And hee beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders reiected, the same is become the head of the corner? |
| 20:18 | Whosoeuer shall fall vpon that stone, shalbe broken: but on whomsoeuer it shall fall, it will grinde him to powder. |
| 20:19 | And the chiefe Priests and the Scribes the same houre sought to lay hands on him, and they feared the people: for they perceiued that he had spoken this parable against them. |
| 20:20 | And they watched him, and sent foorth spies, which should faine themselues iust men, that they might take holde of his words, that so they might deliuer him vnto the power and authoritie of the gouernour. |
| 20:21 | And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truely. |
| 20:22 | Is it lawfull for vs to giue tribute vnto Cesar, or no? |
| 20:23 | But he perceiued their craftines, and said vnto them, Why tempt ye me? |
| 20:24 | Shew me a peny: whose image and superscription hath it? They answered, and said, Cesars. |
| 20:25 | And he said vnto them, Render therefore vnto Cesar the things which be Cesars, and vnto God the things which be Gods. |
| 20:26 | And they could not take holde of his wordes before the people, and they marueiled at his answere, and helde their peace. |
| 20:27 | Then came to him certaine of the Sadduces (which denie that there is any resurrection) and they asked him, |
| 20:28 | Saying, Master, Moses wrote vnto vs, If any mans brother die, hauing a wife, and hee die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise vp seede vnto his brother. |
| 20:29 | There were therefore seuen brethren, and the first tooke a wife, and died without children. |
| 20:30 | And the second tooke her to wife, and he died childlesse. |
| 20:31 | And the third tooke her, and in like maner the seuen also. And they left no children, and died. |
| 20:32 | Last of all the woman died also. |
| 20:33 | Therefore in the resurrection, whose wife of them is she? for seuen had her to wife. |
| 20:34 | And Iesus answering, said vnto them, The children of this world, marrie, and are giuen in marriage: |
| 20:35 | But they which shall be accompted worthy to obtaine that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marrie, nor are giuen in marriage. |
| 20:36 | Neither can they die any more; for they are equall vnto the Angels, and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. |
| 20:37 | Now that the dead are raised, euen Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isahac, and the God of Iacob. |
| 20:38 | For he is not a God of the dead, but of the liuing for all liue vnto him. |
| 20:39 | Then certaine of the Scribes answering, said, Master, Thou hast well said. |
| 20:40 | And after that, they durst not aske him any question at all. |
| 20:41 | And he said vnto them, How say they that Christ is Dauids sonne? |
| 20:42 | And Dauid himselfe saith in the booke of Psalmes, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, |
| 20:43 | Till I make thine enemies thy footestoole. |
| 20:44 | Dauid therefore calleth him, Lord, how is he then his sonne? |
| 20:45 | Then in the audience of all the people, he said vnto his disciples, |
| 20:46 | Beware of the Scribes, which desire to walke in long robes, and loue greetings in the markets, and the highest seates in the Synagogues, and the chiefe roumes at feasts: |
| 20:47 | Which deuoure widowes houses and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receiue greater damnation. |
| 20:1 | And it came to passe, that on one of those dayes, as he taught ye people in the temple, & preached the Gospell, the hie priestes and the scribes came vpo hym, with the elders. |
| 20:2 | And spake vnto him, saying: Tell vs by what aucthoritie doest thou these thynges? Eyther who is he that gaue thee this aucthoritie? |
| 20:3 | Iesus aunswered, & sayde vnto them: I also wyll aske you one thyng, & aunswere me. |
| 20:4 | The baptisme of Iohn, was it from heauen, or of men? |
| 20:5 | And they reasoned within the selues, saying, Yf we say from heauen, he wyll say, why then beleued ye hym not? |
| 20:6 | But and yf we say of men, all the people wyll stone vs: For they be perswaded that Iohn is a prophete. |
| 20:7 | And they aunswered, that they coulde not tell whence it was. |
| 20:8 | And Iesus saide vnto them: Neither tell I you by what aucthoritie I do these thynges. |
| 20:9 | Then began he to put foorth to the people this parable. A certayne man planted a vineyarde, and let it foorth to husbande men, and went hym selfe into a straunge countrey for a great season. |
| 20:10 | And when the time was come, he sent a seruaunt to the husbande men, that they shoulde geue hym of the fruite of the vineyarde. And they beat hym, and sent hym away emptie. |
| 20:11 | And agayne, he sent yet another seruaunt: and hym they did beate, and entreated hym shamefully, and sent hym away emptie. |
| 20:12 | Agayne, he sent the thirde also: and hym they wounded, and cast hym out. |
| 20:13 | Then said the Lord of the vineyarde: What shal I do? I wyl send my deare sonne, it may be they wyll reuerence hym, when they see hym. |
| 20:14 | But when the husbande men sawe him, they reasoned within them selues, saying: This is the heyre, come, let vs kyll hym, that the inheritaunce may be ours. |
| 20:15 | And they cast him out of the vineyard, and kylled hym. What shall the Lorde of the vineyarde therfore do vnto them? |
| 20:16 | He shall come and destroye these husbande men, & shall let out his vineyarde to other. When they hearde this, they sayde, God forbyd. |
| 20:17 | And he behelde them, & sayde: What is this then that is written, The stone that the buylders refused, the same is become the head of the corner. |
| 20:18 | Whosoeuer doth stumble vppon that stone, shalbe broken: but on whosoeuer it falleth, it wyll grinde hym to powder. |
| 20:19 | And the hye priestes & the scribes, the same houre went about to laye handes on hym: and they feared the people. For they perceaued that he had spoken this similitude agaynst them. |
| 20:20 | And they watched hym, & sent foorth spyes, which shoulde fayne them selues ryghteous men, to take hym in his wordes, and to delyuer hym vnto the power and aucthoritie of the deputie. |
| 20:21 | And they asked him, saying: Maister, we knowe that thou sayest and teachest ryght, neither considerest thou the outwarde appearaunce of any man, but teachest the way of God truely: |
| 20:22 | Is is lawfull for vs to geue tribute vnto Caesar, or no? |
| 20:23 | He perceaued their craftynesse, & saide vnto them: why tempt ye me? |
| 20:24 | Shewe me a penie, whose image and superscription hath it? They aunswered and sayde, Caesars. |
| 20:25 | And he sayde vnto them: Geue then vnto Caesar, the thynges which belong vnto Caesar, and to God the thynges that perteyne vnto God. |
| 20:26 | And they coulde not reproue his saying before the people: and they marueyled at his aunswere, & helde their peace. |
| 20:27 | Then came to hym certayne of the saducees, which denie that there is any resurrection, and they asked hym, |
| 20:28 | Saying: Maister, Moyses wrote vnto vs, yf any mans brother dye, hauyng a wyfe, and he dye without chyldren: that then his brother shoulde take his wyfe, & rayse vp seede vnto his brother. |
| 20:29 | There were therfore seuen brethren, and the first toke a wyfe, & dyed without chyldren. |
| 20:30 | And the seconde toke her, and he dyed chyldlesse. |
| 20:31 | And the thirde toke her, & in lykewise the residue of the seuen, and left no chyldren behynde them, and dyed. |
| 20:32 | Last of all, the woman dyed also. |
| 20:33 | Nowe in the resurrection, whose wife of them shall she be? For seuen had her to wyfe. |
| 20:34 | Iesus aunswered and saide vnto the: The chyldren of this worlde marrye wyues, and are marryed: |
| 20:35 | But they which shalbe counted worthy to enioy that worlde, and the resurrection from the dead, do not marrye wyues, neither are marryed, |
| 20:36 | Nor yet can dye any more: For they are equall vnto the angels, and are the sonnes of God, inasmuche as they are chyldren of the resurrection. |
| 20:37 | And that the dead shall ryse agayne, Moyses also sheweth besides the bushe, when he calleth the Lorde the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, & the God of Iacob. |
| 20:38 | For he is not a God of dead, but of lyuyng: For all lyue vnto hym. |
| 20:39 | Then certayne of the pharisees aunswered, and sayde? Maister, thou hast well sayde. |
| 20:40 | And after that, durst they not aske him any question at all. |
| 20:41 | And he sayde vnto them: Howe saye they that Christe is Dauids sonne: |
| 20:42 | And Dauid hym selfe sayeth in the booke of the psalmes: The Lord saide to my Lord, syt thou on my right hand, |
| 20:43 | Tyll I make thine enemies thy footestoole? |
| 20:44 | Dauid therfore calleth hym Lorde, & howe is he then his sonne? |
| 20:45 | Then in the audience of all the people, he saide vnto his disciples. |
| 20:46 | Beware of the scribes, whiche wyll go in long robes, and loue greetinges in the markets, and the hyest seates in the synagogues, and the chiefe rowmes at feastes: |
| 20:47 | Which deuour widowes howses vnder colour of longe prayers: The same shall receaue greater dampnation. |
| 20:1 | And it came to passe, that on one of those dayes, as he taught the people in the Temple, and preached the Gospel, the hie Priests and the Scribes came vpon him with the Elders, |
| 20:2 | And spake vnto him, saying, Tell vs by what authoritie thou doest these things, or who is hee that hath giuen thee this authoritie? |
| 20:3 | And he answered, and sayde vnto them, I also will aske you one thing: tell me therefore: |
| 20:4 | The baptisme of Iohn, was it from heauen, or of men? |
| 20:5 | And they reasoned within themselues, saying, If we shall say, From heauen, he will say, Why then beleeued ye him not? |
| 20:6 | But if we shall say, Of men, all the people will stone vs: for they be perswaded that Iohn was a Prophet. |
| 20:7 | Therefore they answered, that they could not tell whence it was. |
| 20:8 | Then Iesus sayd vnto them, Neither tell I you, by what authoritie I doe these things. |
| 20:9 | Then began he to speake to ye people this parable, A certaine man planted a vineyarde, and let it forth to husbandmen: and went into a strange countrey, for a great time. |
| 20:10 | And at the time conuenient he sent a seruant to the husbandmen, that they should giue him of the fruite of the vineyard: but the husbandmen did beate him, and sent him away emptie. |
| 20:11 | Againe he sent yet another seruant: and they did beate him, and foule entreated him, and sent him away emptie. |
| 20:12 | Moreouer he sent the third, and him they wounded, and cast out. |
| 20:13 | Then sayd the Lord of the vineyard, What shall I doe? I will send my beloued sonne: it may be that they will doe reuerence, when they see him. |
| 20:14 | But when the husbandmen sawe him, they reasoned with themselues, saying, This is the heire: come, let vs kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. |
| 20:15 | So they cast him out of the vineyarde, and killed him. What shall the Lord of the vineyarde therefore doe vnto them? |
| 20:16 | He will come and destroy these husbandmen, and wil giue out his vineyard to others. But when they heard it, they sayd, God forbid. |
| 20:17 | And he beheld them, and said, What meaneth this then that is written, The stone that the builders refused, that is made the head of the corner? |
| 20:18 | Whosoeuer shall fall vpon that stone, shall be broken: and on whomsoeuer it shall fall, it will grinde him to pouder. |
| 20:19 | Then the hie Priests, and the Scribes the same houre went about to lay hands on him: (but they feared the people) for they perceiued that he had spoken this parable against them. |
| 20:20 | And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should faine themselues iust men, to take him in his talke, and to deliuer him vnto the power and authoritie of the gouernour. |
| 20:21 | And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest, and teachest right, neither doest thou accept mans person, but teachest the way of God truely. |
| 20:22 | Is it lawfull for vs to giue Cesar tribute or no? |
| 20:23 | But he perceiued their craftines, and sayd vnto them, Why tempt ye me? |
| 20:24 | Shew me a penie. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered, and sayd, Cesars. |
| 20:25 | Then he sayd vnto them, Giue then vnto Cesar the things which are Cesars, and to God those which are Gods. |
| 20:26 | And they could not reproue his saying before the people: but they marueiled at his answere, and helde their peace. |
| 20:27 | Then came to him certaine of the Sadduces (which denie that there is any resurrection) and they asked him, |
| 20:28 | Saying, Master, Moses wrote vnto vs, If any mans brother die hauing a wife, and hee die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise vp seede vnto his brother. |
| 20:29 | Now there were seuen brethren, and the first tooke a wife, and he dyed without children. |
| 20:30 | And the second tooke the wife, and he dyed childelesse. |
| 20:31 | Then the third tooke her: and so likewise the seuen dyed, and left no children. |
| 20:32 | And last of all the woman dyed also. |
| 20:33 | Therefore at the resurrection, whose wife of them shall she be? for seuen had her to wife. |
| 20:34 | Then Iesus answered, and sayd vnto them, The children of this world marry wiues, and are married. |
| 20:35 | But they which shalbe counted worthy to enioy that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry wiues, neither are married. |
| 20:36 | For they can die no more, forasmuch as they are equall vnto the Angels, and are the sonnes of God, since they are the children of the resurrection. |
| 20:37 | And that the dead shall rise againe, euen Moses shewed it besides the bush, when he said, The Lord is the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Iacob. |
| 20:38 | For he is not the God of the dead, but of them which liue: for all liue vnto him. |
| 20:39 | Then certaine of the Scribes answered, and sayd, Master, thou hast well sayd. |
| 20:40 | And after that, durst they not aske him any thing at all. |
| 20:41 | Then sayd he vnto them, Howe say they that Christ is Dauids sonne? |
| 20:42 | And Dauid himselfe sayth in the booke of the Psalmes, The Lord sayd vnto my Lord, Sit at my right hand, |
| 20:43 | Till I shall make thine enemies thy footestoole. |
| 20:44 | Seeing Dauid called him Lord, howe is he then his sonne? |
| 20:45 | Then in the audience of all the people he sayd vnto his disciples, |
| 20:46 | Beware of the Scribes, which willingly go in long robes, and loue salutations in the markets, and the highest seates in the assemblies, and the chiefe roomes at feastes: |
| 20:47 | Which deuoure widowes houses, and in shewe make long prayers: These shall receiue greater damnation. |
