John - Chapter: 5

>
5:1Aftir these thingis ther was a feeste dai of Jewis, and Jhesus wente vp to Jerusalem.
5:2And in Jerusalem is a waissynge place, that in Ebrew is named Bethsaida, and hath fyue porchis.
5:3In these lay a greet multitude of sike men, blynde, crokid, and drie, abidynge the mouyng of the watir.
5:4For the aungel `of the Lord cam doun certeyne tymes in to the watir, and the watir was moued; and he that first cam doun in to the sisterne, aftir the mouynge of the watir, was maad hool of what euer sijknesse he was holdun.
5:5And a man was there, hauynge eiyte and thritti yeer in his sikenesse.
5:6And whanne Jhesus hadde seyn hym liggynge, and hadde knowun, that he hadde myche tyme, he seith to hym, Wolt thou be maad hool?
5:7The sijk man answerde to hym, Lord, Y haue no man, that whanne the watir is moued, to putte me `in to the cisterne; for the while Y come, anothir goith doun bifor me.
5:8Jhesus seith to hym, Rise vp, take thi bed, and go.
5:9And anoon the man was maad hool, and took vp his bed, and wente forth. And it was sabat in that dai.
5:10Therfor the Jewis seiden to him that was maad hool, It is sabat, it is not leueful to thee, to take awei thi bed.
5:11He answeride to hem, He that made me hool, seide to me, Take thi bed, and go.
5:12Therfor thei axiden him, What man `is that, that seide to thee, Take vp thi bed, and go?
5:13But he that was maad hool, wiste not who it was. And Jhesus bowide awei fro the puple, that was set in the place.
5:14Aftirward Jhesus foond hym in the temple, and seide to hym, Lo! thou art maad hool; now nyle thou do synne, lest any worse thing bifalle to thee.
5:15Thilke man wente, and telde to the Jewis, that it was Jhesu that made hym hool.
5:16Therfor the Jewis pursueden Jhesu, for he dide this thing in the sabat.
5:17And Jhesus answeride to hem, My fadir worchith til now, and Y worche.
5:18Therfor the Jewis souyten more to sle hym, for not oneli he brak the sabat, but he seide that God was his fadir, and made hym euene to God.
5:19Therfor Jhesus answerde, and seide to hem, Treuli, treuli, Y seye to you, the sone may not of hym silf do ony thing, but that thing that he seeth the fadir doynge; for what euere thingis he doith, the sone doith in lijk maner tho thingis.
5:20For the fadir loueth the sone, and schewith to hym alle thingis that he doith; and he schal schewe to hym grettere werkis than these, that ye wondren.
5:21For as the fadir reisith deed men, and quykeneth, so the sone quykeneth whom he wole.
5:22For nethir the fadir iugith ony man, but hath youun ech doom to the sone,
5:23that alle men onoure the sone, as thei onouren the fadir. He that onourith not the sone, onourith not the fadir that sente hym.
5:24Treuli, treuli, Y seie to you, that he that herith my word, and bileueth to hym that sente me, hath euerlastynge lijf, and he cometh not in to doom, but passith fro deeth in to lijf.
5:25Treuli, treuli Y seie to you, for the our cometh, and now it is, whanne deed men schulen here the vois of `Goddis sone, and thei that heren, schulen lyue.
5:26For as the fadir hath lijf in hym silf, so he yaf to the sone, to haue lijf in him silf;
5:27and he yaf to hym power to make doom, for he is mannys sone.
5:28Nyle ye wondre this, for the our cometh, in which alle men that ben in birielis, schulen here the voice of Goddis sone.
5:29And thei that han do goode thingis, schulen go in to ayenrisyng of lijf; but thei that han done yuele thingis, in to ayenrisyng of doom.
5:30Y may no thing do of my silf, but as Y here, Y deme, and my doom is iust, for Y seke not my wille, but the wille of the fadir that sente me.
5:31If Y bere witnessing of my silf, my witnessyng is not trewe;
5:32another is that berith witnessyng of me, and Y woot that his witnessyng is trewe, that he berith of me.
5:33Ye senten to Joon, and he bar witnessyng to treuthe.
5:34But Y take not witnessyng of man; but Y seie these thingis, that ye be saaf.
5:35He was a lanterne brennynge and schynynge; but ye wolden glade at an our in his liyt.
5:36But Y haue more witnessyng than Joon, for the werkis that my fadir yaf to me to perfourme hem, thilke werkis that Y do beren witnessyng of me, that the fadir sente me.
5:37And the fadir that sente me, he bar witnessyng of me. Nether ye herden euere his vois, nether ye seien his licnesse.
5:38And ye han not his word dwellynge in you; for ye byleuen not to hym, whom he sente.
5:39Seke ye scripturis, in which ye gessen to haue euerlastynge lijf; and tho it ben, that beren witnessyng of me.
5:40And ye wolen not come to me, that ye haue lijf.
5:41Y take not clerenesse of men;
5:42but Y haue knowun you, that ye han not the loue of God in you.
5:43Y cam in the name of my fadir, and ye token not me. If another come in his owne name, ye schulen resseyue hym.
5:44Hou moun ye bileue, that resseyuen glorie ech of othere, and ye seken not the glorie `that is of God aloone?
5:45Nyle ye gesse, that Y am to accuse you anentis the fadir; it is Moises that accusith you, in whom ye hopen.
5:46For if ye bileueden to Moises, perauenture ye schulden bileue also to me; for he wroot of me.
5:47But if ye bileuen not to hise lettris, hou schulen ye bileue to my wordis?

5:1After that ther was a feast of the Iewes and Iesus went vp to Ierusalem.
5:2And ther is at Ierusalem by ye slaughterhousse a pole called in ye Ebrue toge Bethseda havinge five porches
5:3in which laye a greate multitude of sicke folke of blinde halt and wyddered waytinge for the movinge of the water.
5:4For an angell wet doune at a certayne ceason into ye pole and troubled ye water. Whosoever then fyrst after the steringe of the water stepped in was made whoale of what soever disease he had.
5:5And a certayne ma was theare which had bene diseased .xxxviii. yeares
5:6When Iesus sawe him lye and knewe that he now longe tyme had bene diseased he sayde vnto him. Wilt thou be made whoale?
5:7The sicke answered him: Syr I have no man whe the water is troubled to put me into the pole. But in the meane tyme whill I am about to come another steppeth doune before me.
5:8And Iesus sayde vnto him: ryse take vp thy beed and walke.
5:9And immediatly the man was made whole and toke vp his beed and went. And the same daye was the Saboth daye
5:10The Iewes therfore sayde vnto him that was made whole. It is ye Saboth daye it is not laufull for the to cary thy beed
5:11He answered them: he that made me whole sayde vnto me: take vp thy beed and get the hence.
5:12Then axed they him: what man is that which sayde vnto the take vp thy beed and walke.
5:13And he yt was healed wist not who it was. For Iesus had gotte him selfe awaye be cause yt ther was preace of people in ye place.
5:14And after that Iesus founde him in the teple and sayd vnto him: beholde thou arte made whole synne no moore lest a worsse thinge happe vnto the.
5:15The man departed and tolde ye Iewes that yt was Iesus whiche had made him whole.
5:16And therfore the Iewes dyd persecute Iesus and sought the meanes to slee him because he had done these thinges on the Saboth daye.
5:17And Iesus answered them: my father worketh hidder to and I worke.
5:18Therfore the Iewes sought the moare to kill him not only because he had broken the Saboth: but sayde also that God was his father and made him selfe equall with God.
5:19Then answered Iesus and sayde vnto them: verely verely I saye vnto you: the sonne can do no thinge of him selfe but that he seeth ye father do. For whatsoever he doeth yt doeth the sonne also.
5:20For the father loveth ye sonne and sheweth him all thinges whatsoever he him selfe doeth. And he will shewe him greter workes then these because ye shoulde marvayle.
5:21For lykwyse as the father rayseth vp ye deed and quickeneth them even so the sonne quyckeneth whom he will.
5:22Nether iudgeth ye father eny ma: but hath comitted all iudgemet vnto the sonne
5:23because that all men shuld honoure the sonne eve as they honoure the father. He that honoureth not ye sonne the same honoureth not the father which hath sent him.
5:24Verely verely I saye vnto you: He that heareth my wordes and beleveth on him that sent me hath everlastinge lyfe and shall not come into damnacion: but is scaped fro deth vnto lyfe.
5:25Verely verely I saye vnto you: the tyme shall come and now is when the deed shall heare the voyce of the sonne of God. And they yt heare shall live.
5:26For as the father hath life in him silfe: so lyke wyse hath he geven to ye sonne to have lyfe in him silfe:
5:27and hath geven him power also to iudge in that he is the sonne of man.
5:28Marvayle not at this ye houre shall come in the which all yt are in the graves shall heare his voice
5:29and shall come forthe: they that have done good vnto the resurreccion of lyfe: and they that have done evyll vnto the resurreccion of dampnacion.
5:30I can of myne awne selfe do nothinge at all. As I heare I iudge and my iudgemet is iust because I seke not myne awne will but the will of ye father which hath sent me.
5:31Yf I beare witnes of my selfe my witnes is not true.
5:32Ther is a nother that beareth witnes of me and I am sure that the witnes whiche he beareth of me is true.
5:33Ye sent vnto Iohn and he bare witnes vnto the truthe.
5:34But I receave not the recorde of man. Neverthelesse these thinges I saye that ye might be safe.
5:35He was a burninge and a shyninge light and ye wolde for a season have reioysed in his light.
5:36But I have greater witnes then the witnes of Iohn. For ye workes which ye father hath geve me to fynisshe: the same workes which I do beare witnes of me that ye father sent me.
5:37And the father him silfe which hath sent me beareth witnes of me. Ye have not hearde his voyce at eny tyme nor ye have sene his shape:
5:38therto his wordes have ye not abydinge in you. For whome he hath sent: him ye beleve not.
5:39Searche the scriptures for in them ye thinke ye have eternall lyfe: and they are they which testify of me.
5:40And yet will ye not come to me that ye might have lyfe.
5:41I receave not prayse of men.
5:42But I knowe you that ye have not the love of God in you
5:43I am come in my fathers name and ye receave me not. Yf another shall come in his awne name him will ye receave.
5:44How can ye beleve which receave honoure one of another and seke not the honoure that commeth of God only?
5:45Doo not thinke that I wyll accuse you to my father. Ther is one that accuseth you eve Moses in whom ye trust.
5:46For had ye beleved Moses ye wold have beleved me: for he wrote of me.
5:47But now ye beleve not his writinge: how shall ye beleve my wordes.

5:1Afterwarde, there was a feast of the Iewes, and Iesus wente vpto Ierusalem.
5:2There is at Ierusalem by the slaughter house a pole, which in Hebrue is called Bethseda, & hath fyue porches,
5:3wherin laye many sicke, blynde, lame, wythred, which wayted, whan the water shulde moue.
5:4For the angell wente downe at his tyme in to the pole, and stered the water. Who so euer now wente downe first, after that the water was stered, ye same was made whole, what soeuer disease he had.
5:5And there was a man, which had lyen sicke eight and thirtie yeares.
5:6Whan Iesus sawe him lye, & knewe that he had lyen so longe, he saide vnto him: Wilt thou be made whole?
5:7The sicke answered him: Syr, I haue no man, whan the water is moued, to put me in to the pole. And whan I come, another steppeth downe in before me.
5:8Iesus sayde vnto him: Aryse, take vp thy bed, and go thy waye.
5:9And immediatly the man was made whole, and toke vp his bed and wente his waye. But vpon the same daye it was the Sabbath.
5:10Then sayde the Iewes vnto him that was made whole: To daye is ye Sabbath, it is not laufull for the to cary the bed.
5:11He answered them: He that made me whole, sayde vnto me: Take vp thy bed, and go yi waye.
5:12Then axed they him: What man is that, which sayde vnto the: Take vp thy bed, and go yi waye?
5:13But he that was healed, wyst not who he was: for Iesus had gotte him self awaye, because there was moch people.
5:14Afterwarde founde Iesus him in the teple, and sayde vnto him: Beholde, thou art made whole, synne no more, lest a worse thinge happen vnto the.
5:15The ma departed, and tolde the Iewes, that it was Iesus, which had made hi whole.
5:16Therfore dyd ye Iewes persecute Iesus, and sought to slaye him, because he had done this vpo ye Sabbath.
5:17But Iesus answered them: My father worketh hither to, and I worke also.
5:18Therfore sought the Iewes the more to slaye hi: because he brake not onely ye Sabbath, but saide also, that God was his father, and made him self equall with God.
5:19The answered Iesus, and sayde vnto them: Verely verely I saye vnto you: The sonne can do nothinge of himself, but that he seyth the father do. For what soeuer he doeth, that doeth ye sonne also.
5:20The father loueth the sonne, & sheweth him all that he doth, and wyll shewe him yet greater workes, so that ye shal marueyle.
5:21For as the father rayseth vp the deed, and maketh them lyue, eue so the sonne also maketh lyuynge whom he wyll.
5:22For the father iudgeth no man, but hath geuen all iudgmet vnto the sonne,
5:23that they all might honoure the sonne, euen as they honoure ye father. Who so honoureth not the sonne, the same honoureth not the father, which hath sent him.
5:24Verely verely I saye vnto you: Who so heareth my worde, and beleueth him that sent me, hath euerlastinge life, and cometh not in to damnacion, but is passed thorow from death vnto life.
5:25Verely verely I saye vnto you: The houre cometh, & is now allready, yt the deed shal heare ye voyce of ye sonne of God: and they that heare it, shal lyue.
5:26For as the father hath life in him self, so likewyse hath he geuen vnto the sonne, to haue life in himself:
5:27& hath geue hi power also to execute iudgmet because he is the sonne of ma.
5:28Maruayle not ye at this: for ye houre cometh, in ye which all that are in ye graues, shal heare his voyce,
5:29and shal go forth, they that haue done good, vnto the resurreccion of life: but they that haue done euell, vnto the resurreccion of damnacion.
5:30I can do nothinge of my self. As I heare, so I iudge: & my iudgmet is iust. For I seke not myne owne wyll, but the wyll of the father which hath sent me.
5:31Yf I beare wytnesse of my self, my wytnesse is not true.
5:32There is another that beareth wytnesse of me, and I am sure, that the wytnesse which he beareth of me, is true.
5:33Ye sent vnto Ihon, and he bare wytnes of the trueth.
5:34As for me, I take no recorde of ma, but these thinges I saye, that ye might be saued.
5:35He was a burnynge and shyninge light, but ye wolde haue reioysed a litle whyle in his light.
5:36Neuertheles I haue a greater wytnesse then the wytnesse of Ihon. For the workes which the father hath geue me to fynish, the same workes which I do, beare wytnesse of me, that the father hath sent me.
5:37And ye father him self which hath sent me, beareth wytnesse of me. Ye haue nether herde his voyce at eny tyme, ner sene his shappe:
5:38and his worde haue ye not abydinge in you, for ye beleue not him, whom he hath sent.
5:39Searche the scripture, for ye thinke ye haue euerlastinge life therin: and the same is it that testifyeth of me,
5:40and ye wil not come vnto me, that ye might haue life.
5:41I receaue not prayse of men.
5:42But I knowe you, that ye haue not the loue of God in you.
5:43I am come in my fathers name, and ye receaue me not. Yf another shal come in his awne name, him wil ye receaue.
5:44How can ye beleue which receaue prayse one of another, and seke not the prayse, that is of God onely?
5:45Ye shall not thynke that I wyll accuse you before ye father: there is one yt accuseth you, euen Moses, in who ye trust.
5:46Yf ye beleued Moses, ye shulde beleue me also: For he hath wrytte of me.
5:47But yf ye beleue not his wrytinges, how shal ye beleue my wordes?
