Acts - Chapter: 1

>
1:1The former account, indeed, I made concerning all things, O Theophilus, that Jesus began both to do and to teach,
1:2till the day in which, having given command, through the Holy Spirit, to the apostles whom he did choose out, he was taken up,
1:3to whom also he did present himself alive after his suffering, in many certain proofs, through forty days being seen by them, and speaking the things concerning the reign of God.
1:4And being assembled together with them, he commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, `saith he,' `Ye did hear of me;
1:5because John, indeed, baptized with water, and ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit -- after not many days.'
1:6They, therefore, indeed, having come together, were questioning him, saying, `Lord, dost thou at this time restore the reign to Israel?'
1:7and he said unto them, `It is not yours to know times or seasons that the Father did appoint in His own authority;
1:8but ye shall receive power at the coming of the Holy Spirit upon you, and ye shall be witnesses to me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and unto the end of the earth.'
1:9And these things having said -- they beholding -- he was taken up, and a cloud did receive him up from their sight;
1:10and as they were looking stedfastly to the heaven in his going on, then, lo, two men stood by them in white apparel,
1:11who also said, `Men, Galileans, why do ye stand gazing into the heaven? this Jesus who was received up from you into the heaven, shall so come in what manner ye saw him going on to the heaven.'
1:12Then did they return to Jerusalem from the mount that is called of Olives, that is near Jerusalem, a sabbath's journey;
1:13and when they came in, they went up to the upper room, where were abiding both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James, of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zelotes, and Judas, of James;
1:14these all were continuing with one accord in prayer and supplication, with women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
1:15And in these days, Peter having risen up in the midst of the disciples, said, (the multitude also of the names at the same place was, as it were, an hundred and twenty,)
1:16`Men, brethren, it behoved this Writing that it be fulfilled that beforehand the Holy Spirit spake through the mouth of David, concerning Judas, who became guide to those who took Jesus,
1:17because he was numbered among us, and did receive the share in this ministration,
1:18this one, indeed, then, purchased a field out of the reward of unrighteousness, and falling headlong, burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed forth,
1:19and it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem, insomuch that that place is called, in their proper dialect, Aceldama, that is, field of blood,
1:20for it hath been written in the book of Psalms: Let his lodging-place become desolate, and let no one be dwelling in it, and his oversight let another take.
1:21`It behoveth, therefore, of the men who did go with us during all the time in which the Lord Jesus went in and went out among us,
1:22beginning from the baptism of John, unto the day in which he was received up from us, one of these to become with us a witness of his rising again.'
1:23And they set two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias,
1:24and having prayed, they said, `Thou, Lord, who art knowing the heart of all, shew which one thou didst choose of these two
1:25to receive the share of this ministration and apostleship, from which Judas, by transgression, did fall, to go on to his proper place;'
1:26and they gave their lots, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

1:1The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
1:2Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
1:3To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
1:4And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
1:5For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
1:6When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
1:7And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
1:8But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
1:9And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
1:10And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
1:11Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
1:12Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.
1:13And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
1:14These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
1:15And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)
1:16Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.
1:17For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.
1:18Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
1:19And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.
1:20For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.
1:21Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
1:22Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.
1:23And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
1:24And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,
1:25That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.
1:26And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

1:1Indeed, O Theophilus, I made the first report concerning all things which Jesus began both to do and to teach,
1:2until the day He was taken up, having given directions to the apostles whom He chose, through the Holy Spirit,
1:3to whom also He presented Himself living after His suffering, by many infallible proofs, being seen by them through forty days, and speaking the things concerning the kingdom of God.
1:4And having met with them , He charged them not to leave Jerusalem, but to await the promise of the Father, "which you heard of Me;
1:5for John indeed baptized in water, but you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days after."
1:6Then, indeed, coming together they questioned Him, saying, Lord, do You restore the kingdom to Israel at this time?
1:7And He said to them, It is not yours to know times or seasons which the Father placed in His own authority;
1:8but you will receive power, the Holy Spirit coming upon you, and you will be witnesses of Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
1:9And saying these things, as they looked on, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him from their eyes.
1:10And as they were intently looking into the heaven, He having gone, even behold, two men in white clothing stood by them,
1:11who also said, Men, Galileans, why do you stand looking up to the heaven? This Jesus, the One being taken from you into the heaven, will come in the way you saw Him going into the heaven.
1:12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount being called Of Olive Grove, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath's journey away.
1:13And when they went in, they went up to the upper room where they were waiting: both Peter and James, and John and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alpheus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the brother of James.
1:14These all were continuing steadfastly in prayer and in supplication with one mind, with the women, and with Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.
1:15And in these days, standing up in the middle of the disciples, (and the number of names together being about a hundred and twenty), Peter said,
1:16Men, brothers, it was necessary for this Scripture to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke before by David's mouth concerning Judas, the one having become guide to those seizing Jesus;
1:17for he was numbered with us, and obtained a portion of this ministry.
1:18Indeed, then, this one bought a field out of the reward of unrighteousness; and falling headlong, he burst in the middle, and poured out all his bowels.
1:19And it became known to all those living in Jerusalem, so as that field to be called in their own dialect, Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.
1:20For it has been written in the scroll of Psalms, Let his estate become forsaken, and he not be living in it. And, "Let another take his overseership." LXX-Psa. 68:26; Psa. 108:8; MT-Psa. 69:25; Psa. 109:8
1:21Therefore, it is right that one of these men being together with us all the time in which the Lord Jesus came in and went out among us,
1:22beginning from the baptism of John until the day when He was taken from us, one of these to become a witness of His resurrection with us.
1:23And they set out two: Joseph, he being called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
1:24And having prayed, they said, You, Lord, knower of all hearts, show which one You chose from these two,
1:25to take the share of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas fell, to go to his own place.
1:26And they gave their lots. And the lot fell on Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
