Acts - Chapter: 19

>
19:1And it bifelle, whanne Apollo was at Corinthi, that Poul whanne he hadde go the hiyer coostis, he cam to Efesie, and foond summe of disciplis.
19:2And he seide to hem, Whethir ye that bileuen han resseyued the Hooli Goost? And thei seiden to hym, But nether `han we herd, if the Hooli Goost is.
19:3And he seide, Therfor in what thing ben ye baptisid? And thei seiden, In the baptym of Joon.
19:4And Poul seide, Joon baptiside the puple in baptym of penaunce, and tauyte, that thei schulden bileue in hym that was to comynge `after hym, that is, in Jhesu.
19:5Whanne thei herden these thingis, thei weren baptisid in the name of the Lord Jhesu.
19:6And whanne Poul hadde leid on hem his hoondis, the Hooli Goost cam in hem, and thei spaken with langagis, and profecieden.
19:7And alle weren almest twelue men.
19:8And he yede in to the synagoge, and spak with trist thre monethis, disputinge and tretinge of the kingdom of God.
19:9But whanne summe weren hardid, and bileueden not, and cursiden the weie of the Lord bifor the multitude, he yede awei fro hem, and departide the disciplis, and disputide in the scole of a myyti man eche dai.
19:10This was doon bi twei yeeris, so that alle that dwelliden in Asie herden the word of the Lord, Jewis and hethene men.
19:11And God dide vertues not smale bi the hoond of Poul,
19:12so that on sijk men the sudaries weren borun fro his bodye, and sijknessis departiden fro hem, and wickid spiritis wenten out.
19:13But also summe of the Jewis exorsisists yeden aboute, and assaieden to clepe the name of the Lord Jhesu Crist on hem that hadden yuele spiritis, and seiden, Y coniure you bi Jhesu, whom Poul prechith.
19:14And ther weren seuene sones of a Jewe, Steuen, a prince of preestis, that diden this thing.
19:15But the yuel spirit answeride, and seide to hem, Y knowe Jhesu, and Y knowe Poul; but who ben ye?
19:16And the man in which was the worste deuel, lippide on hem, and hadde victorie of bothe, and was stronge ayens hem, that thei nakid and woundid fledden awei fro that hous.
19:17And this thing was maad knowun to alle the Jewis and to hethene men, that dwelliden at Effesie; and drede felle doun on hem alle, and thei magnyfieden the name of the Lord Jhesu.
19:18And many men bileueden, and camen, knowlechinge and tellynge her dedis.
19:19And manye of them that sueden curiouse thingis, brouyten togidere bookis, and brenneden hem bifor alle men; and whanne the prices of tho weren acountid, thei founden monei of fifti thousynd pens;
19:20so strongli the word of God wexide, and was confermyd.
19:21And whanne these thingis weren fillid, Poul purposide in spirit, aftir that Macedony was passid and Acaie, to go to Jerusalem, and seide, For aftir that Y schal be there, it bihoueth me `to se also Rome.
19:22And he sente in to Macedonye twey men, that mynystriden to hym, Tymothe, and Eraste, and he dwellide for a tyme in Asie.
19:23And a greet troubling was maad in that dai, of the weie of the Lord.
19:24For a man, Demetrie bi name, a worcher in siluer, makide siluer housis to Diane, and yaf to crafti men myche wynnyng;
19:25which he clepide togidere `hem that weren suche maner werkmen, and seide, Men, ye witen that of this craft wynnyng is to vs;
19:26and ye seen and heren, that this Poul counseilith and turneth awei myche puple, not oonli of Effesie, but almest of al Asie, and seith, that thei ben not goddis, that ben maad with hoondis.
19:27And not oonli this part schal be in perel to vs, to come in to repreef, but also the temple of the greet Dian schal be acountid in to nouyt; yhe, and the maieste of hir schal bigynne to be destried, whom al Asie and the world worschipith.
19:28Whanne these thingis weren herd, thei weren fillid with ire, and crieden, and seiden, Greet is the Dian of Effesians.
19:29And the citee was fillid with confusioun, and thei maden an asaut with oon wille in to the teaatre, and tooken Gayus and Aristark, men of Macedonye, felawis of Poul.
19:30And whanne Poul would haue entrid in to the peple, the disciplis suffriden not.
19:31And also summe of the princis of Asie, that weren hise freendis, senten to him. and preieden, that he schulde not yyue hym silf in to the teatre.
19:32And othere men crieden othir thing; for the chirche was confusid, and many wisten not for what cause thei weren come togidere.
19:33But of the puple thei drowen awei oon Alisaundre, while Jewis puttiden hym forth. And Alisaundre axide with his hoond silence, and wolde yelde a resoun to the puple.
19:34And as thei knewen that he was a Jew, o vois of alle men was maad, criynge as bi tweyn ouris, Greet Dian of Effesians.
19:35And whanne the scribe hadde ceessid the puple, he seide, Men of Effesie, what man is he, that knowith not, that the citee of Effesians is the worschipere of greet Dian, and of the child of Jubiter?
19:36Therfor whanne it may not be ayenseid to these thingis, it behoueth you to be ceessid, and to do no thing folili;
19:37for ye han brouyt these men, nethir sacrilegeris, nethir blasfemynge youre goddesse.
19:38That if Demetrie, and the werk men that ben with hym, han cause ayens ony man, there ben courtis, and domes, and iugis; accusen thei eche other.
19:39If ye seken ouyt of ony othir thing, it may be assoylid in the lawful chirche.
19:40For whi we ben in perel to be repreuyd of this daies dissencioun, sithen no man is gilti, of whom we moun yelde resoun of this rennyng togidre.
19:41whanne he hadde seid this thing, he lete the puple go.

19:1It fortuned whyll Appollo was at Corinthum that Paul passed thorow the vpper costes and came to Ephesus and foude certayne disciples
19:2and sayd vnto them: have ye receaved the holy gost sence ye beleved? And they sayde vnto him: no we have not hearde whether ther be eny holy goost or no.
19:3And he sayd vnto them: wher wt were ye then baptised? And they sayd: with Iohns baptim
19:4Then sayde Paul: Iohn verely bapiised with the baptim of repentaunce sayinge vnto the people that they shuld beleve on him which shuld come after him: that is on Christ Iesus.
19:5When they hearde that they were baptised in the name of the lorde Iesu.
19:6And Paul layde his hondes apon them and the holy gost came on them and they spake with tonges and prophesied
19:7and all the men were aboute .xii.
19:8And he went into the synagoge and behaved him selfe boldely for the space of thre monethes disputynge and gevynge them exhortacions of the kyngdome of God.
19:9When dyvers wexed harde herted and beleved not but spake evyll of the waye and that before the multitude: he departed from them and seperated the disciples. And disputed dayly in ye scole of one called Tyranus.
19:10And this contynued by the space of two yeares: so yt all they which dwelt in Asia hearde the worde of the lorde Iesu bothe Iewes and Grekes.
19:11And god wrought no small miracles by the hondes of Paul:
19:12so that from his body were brought vnto the sicke napkyns or partlettes and the diseases departed from the and the evyll spretes went out of them.
19:13Then certayne of the vagabounde Iewes exorcistes toke apon them to call over them which had evyll spretes the name of the lorde Iesus sayinge: We adiure you by Iesu who Paul preacheth.
19:14And ther were seven sonnes of one Sceva a Iewe and chefe of the prestes which dyd so.
19:15And the evyll sprete answered and sayde: Iesus I knowe and Paul I knowe: but who are ye?
19:16And ye man in who the evyll sprete was ranne on the and overcame the and prevayled agaynst them so that they fledde out of that housse naked and wouded.
19:17And this was knowen to all ye Iewes and Grekes also which dwelt at Ephesus and feare came on them all and they magnified the name of ye lorde Iesus.
19:18And many yt beleved came and confessed and shewed their workes.
19:19Many of the which vsed curious craftes brought their bokes and burned the before all men and they counted the price of the and foude it fifty thousande silverlynges.
19:20So myghtely grewe ye worde of god and prevayled.
19:21After these thinges were ended Paul purposed in the sprete to passe over Macedonia and Achaia and to goo to Ierusalem saying: After I have bene there I must also se Rome.
19:22So sent he into Macedonia two of the that ministred vnto him Timotheus and Erastus: but he him selfe remayned in Asia for a season.
19:23The same tyme ther arose no lytell a do aboute that waye.
19:24For a certayne man named Demetrius a silvermyth which made silver schrynes for Diana was not a lytell beneficiall vnto the craftes men.
19:25Which he called to geder with the worke men of lyke occupacion and sayd: Syrs ye knowe that by this crafte we have vauntage.
19:26Moreover ye se and heare that not alone at Ephesus but almost thorowe oute all Asia this Paul hath persuaded and turned awaye moche people saying yt they be not goddes which are made wt hondes.
19:27So that not only this oure crafte cometh into parell to be set at nought: but also that ye temple of ye greate goddas Diana shuld be despysed and her magnificence shuld be destroyed which all Asia and the worlde worshippeth.
19:28When they hearde these sayinges they were full of wrathe and cryed out saying: Greate is Diana of the Ephesians.
19:29And all the cite was on a roore and they russhed in to the comen hall with one assent and caught Gayus and Aristarcus men of Macedonia Pauls companios.
19:30When Paul wolde have entred in vnto the people ye disciples suffered him not.
19:31Certayne also of ye chefe of Asia which were his frendes sent vnto him desyrynge him that he wolde not preace into the comen hall.
19:32Some cryed one thinge and some another and the congregacion was all out of quiet and ye moare parte knewe not wherfore they were come togeder.
19:33Some of the company drue forth Alexander the Iewes thrustynge him forwardes. Alexander beckened with the honde and wolde have geven ye people an answer.
19:34When they knewe ye he was a Iewe ther arose a shoute almost for the space of two houres of all men cryinge greate is Diana of the Ephesians.
19:35When the toune clarcke had ceased the people he sayd: ye men of Ephesus what man is it that knoweth not how that the cite of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddas Diana and of ye ymage which came fro heven.
19:36Seinge then yt no man sayth here agaynst ye ought to be content and to do nothinge rasshly:
19:37For ye have brought hyther these me whiche are nether robbers of churches nor yet despisers of youre goddes.
19:38Wherfore yf Demetrius and the craftes men which are wt him have eny sayinge to eny man the lawe is open and ther are ruelars let the accuse one another.
19:39Yf ye goo about eny other thinge it maye be determined in a lawfull cogregacion
19:40For we are in ieoperdy to be accused of this dayes busines: for as moche as ther is no cause wherby we maye geve a rekenynge of this concourse of people.
19:41And when he had thus spoken he let the congregacion departe.

19:1Bvt it fortuned whan Apollo was at Corinthum, that Paul walked thorow the vpper coastes, and came to Ephesus, and founde certayne disciples,
19:2vnto whom he sayde: Haue ye receaued ye holy goost, sence ye beleued? They sayde vnto hi: We haue not herde, whether there be an holy goost.
19:3He sayde vnto them: Where with then were ye baptysed? They sayde: With the baptyme of Ihon.
19:4Paul sayde: Ihon baptysed with the baptyme of repentaunce, and spake vnto ye people, that they shulde beleue on him, which shulde come after him, that is, on Iesus, that the same is Christ.
19:5Whan they herde that, they were baptysed in the name of the LORDE Iesu.
19:6And whan Paul layed the hades on the, the holy goost came vpon them, and they spake with tunges, and prophecied.
19:7And all the men were aboute twolue.
19:8He wete in to ye synagoge, and preached boldly thre monethes longe, teachinge, and geuynge them exortacions of the kyngdome of God.
19:9But whan dyuerse waxed herde herted, and beleued not, and spake euell of the waye of the LORDE before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, and disputed daylye in the scole of one called Tyrannus.
19:10And this was done two yeares loge, so that all they which dwelt in Asia, herde the worde of the LORDE Iesu, both Iewes & Grekes.
19:11And God wroughte no small miracles by the handes of Paul,
19:12so that from his body there were broughte napkyns or partlettes vnto the sicke, and the diseases departed from them, and the euell spretes wente out of them.
19:13But certayne of the vagabounde Iewes which were coniurers, vndertoke to name ye name of the LORDE Iesus, ouer those that had euell spretes, and sayde: We charge you by Iesus whom Paul preacheth.
19:14They were seuen sonnes of one Sceua a Iewe the hye prest, which dyd so.
19:15The euell sprete answered, and sayde: Iesus I knowe, and Paul I knowe, but who are ye?
19:16And the ma in who the euell sprete was, ranne vpon them, and ouercame them, and cast them vnder him, so that they fled out of the same house naked and wounded.
19:17This was knowne vnto all the Iewes and Grekes which dwelt at Ephesus, and there fell a feare vpon them all. And ye name of the LORDE Iesus was magnified.
19:18Many of the also that beleued, came and cofessed, and shewed their workes.
19:19But many of them that had vsed curious craftes, broughte the bokes together, and burnte them openly: and they counted the pryce of them, and founde it of money fiftye thousande pens.
19:20So mightely grewe ye worde of the LORDE, and preuayled.
19:21Whan this was done, Paul purposed in sprete to take his iourney thorow Macedonia and Achaia, and to go to Ierusale, and sayde: After that I haue bene there, I must se Rome also.
19:22And he sent into Macedonia two that mynistred vnto him, Timotheus and Erastus. But he himselfe remayned in Asia for a season.
19:23At the same tyme there rose no litle a doo aboute that waye.
19:24For a certayne man named Demetrius a goldsmyth, which made syluer shrynes for Diana, and broughte them of the crafte no small vauntage.
19:25Them he gathered together, and the feloweworkme of the same occupacion, and sayde: Syrs, ye knowe that by this crafte we haue vauntage,
19:26and ye se and heare, that not onely at Ephesus, but almost also thorow out all Asia, this Paul turneth awaye moch people with his persuadynge, and sayeth: They be not goddes that are made with hondes.
19:27Howbeit it shal not onely brynge oure occupacion to this poynte to be set at naught, but also the temple of greate Diana shal from hence forth be despysed, and hir maiestye also shalbe destroyed, who neuertheles all Asia and the worlde worshippeth.
19:28Whan they herde this, they were full of wrath, cried out, and sayde: Greate is Diana of the Ephesians.
19:29And all ye cite was on a roore, and they russhed in with one assent in to the open place, and toke Gaius and Aristarchus of Macedonia, Pauls companyons.
19:30Whan Paul wolde haue gone in amonge the people, the disciples suffred him not.
19:31Certayne also of ye chefe of Asia which were Pauls good frendes, sent vnto him, and desyred him, that he shulde not preasse in to the open place.
19:32Some cried one thinge, some another. And the congregacion was out of quyete, and the more parte knewe not wherfore they were come together.
19:33Some of the people drue forth Alexander, whan ye Iewes thrust him forwarde. Alexader beckened with the hande, and wolde haue geuen the people an answere.
19:34But whan they knewe that he was a Iewe, there arose a shoute of all, and cried the space of two houres: Greate is Diana of the Ephesians.
19:35Whan the towne clarke had stylled the people, he sayde: Ye men of Ephesus, what man is it which knoweth not, that the cite of ye Ephesias is a worshipper of the greate goddesse Diana, and of the heauenly ymage?
19:36Seinge now that this can not be sayde agaynst, ye ought to be contente, and to do nothinge without aduysement.
19:37Ye haue broughte hither these men, which are nether churchrobbers ner blasphemers off youre goddesse.
19:38But yff Demetrius and they that are craftesmen with him, haue ought to saye vnto eny man, the lawe is open, and there are rulers, let them accuse one another.
19:39But yf ye wil go aboute eny other thinge, it maye be determyned in a laufull congregacion.
19:40For we stonde in ioperdy to be accused of this dayes vproure: and yet is there no man giltye, of whom we mighte geue a rekenynge of this vproure.
19:41And whan he had sayde this, he let the congregacion departe.
