| 19:1 | And it came to pass, in Apollos' being in Corinth, Paul having gone through the upper parts, came to Ephesus, and having found certain disciples, |
| 19:2 | he said unto them, `The Holy Spirit did ye receive -- having believed?' and they said unto him, `But we did not even hear whether there is any Holy Spirit;' |
| 19:3 | and he said unto them, `To what, then, were ye baptized?' and they said, `To John's baptism.' |
| 19:4 | And Paul said, `John, indeed, did baptize with a baptism of reformation, saying to the people that in him who is coming after him they should believe -- that is, in the Christ -- Jesus;' |
| 19:5 | and they, having heard, were baptized -- to the name of the Lord Jesus, |
| 19:6 | and Paul having laid on them `his' hands, the Holy Spirit came upon them, they were speaking also with tongues, and prophesying, |
| 19:7 | and all the men were, as it were, twelve. |
| 19:8 | And having gone into the synagogue, he was speaking boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading the things concerning the reign of God, |
| 19:9 | and when certain were hardened and were disbelieving, speaking evil of the way before the multitude, having departed from them, he did separate the disciples, every day reasoning in the school of a certain Tyrannus. |
| 19:10 | And this happened for two years so that all those dwelling in Asia did hear the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks, |
| 19:11 | mighty works also -- not common -- was God working through the hands of Paul, |
| 19:12 | so that even unto the ailing were brought from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the sicknesses departed from them; the evil spirits also went forth from them. |
| 19:13 | And certain of the wandering exorcist Jews, took upon `them' to name over those having the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, `We adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul doth preach;' |
| 19:14 | and there were certain -- seven sons of Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest -- who are doing this thing; |
| 19:15 | and the evil spirit, answering, said, `Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with; and ye -- who are ye?' |
| 19:16 | And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaping upon them, and having overcome them, prevailed against them, so that naked and wounded they did flee out of that house, |
| 19:17 | and this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who are dwelling at Ephesus, and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified, |
| 19:18 | many also of those who did believe were coming, confessing and declaring their acts, |
| 19:19 | and many of those who had practised the curious arts, having brought the books together, were burning `them' before all; and they reckoned together the prices of them, and found `it' five myriads of silverlings; |
| 19:20 | so powerfully was the word of God increasing and prevailing. |
| 19:21 | And when these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in the Spirit, having gone through Macedonia and Achaia, to go on to Jerusalem, saying -- `After my being there, it behoveth me also to see Rome;' |
| 19:22 | and having sent to Macedonia two of those ministering to him -- Timotheus and Erastus -- he himself stayed a time in Asia. |
| 19:23 | And there came, at that time, not a little stir about the way, |
| 19:24 | for a certain one, Demetrius by name, a worker in silver, making silver sanctuaries of Artemis, was bringing to the artificers gain not a little, |
| 19:25 | whom, having brought in a crowd together, and those who did work about such things, he said, `Men, ye know that by this work we have our wealth; |
| 19:26 | and ye see and hear, that not only at Ephesus, but almost in all Asia, this Paul, having persuaded, did turn away a great multitude, saying, that they are not gods who are made by hands; |
| 19:27 | and not only is this department in danger for us of coming into disregard, but also, that of the great goddess Artemis the temple is to be reckoned for nothing, and also her greatness is about to be brought down, whom all Asia and the world doth worship.' |
| 19:28 | And they having heard, and having become full of wrath, were crying out, saying, `Great `is' the Artemis of the Ephesians!' |
| 19:29 | and the whole city was filled with confusion, they rushed also with one accord into the theatre, having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul's fellow-travellers. |
| 19:30 | And on Paul's purposing to enter in unto the populace, the disciples were not suffering him, |
| 19:31 | and certain also of the chief men of Asia, being his friends, having sent unto him, were entreating him not to venture himself into the theatre. |
| 19:32 | Some indeed, therefore, were calling out one thing, and some another, for the assembly was confused, and the greater part did not know for what they were come together; |
| 19:33 | and out of the multitude they put forward Alexander -- the Jews thrusting him forward -- and Alexander having beckoned with the hand, wished to make defence to the populace, |
| 19:34 | and having known that he is a Jew, one voice came out of all, for about two hours, crying, `Great `is' the Artemis of the Ephesians!' |
| 19:35 | And the public clerk having quieted the multitude, saith, `Men, Ephesians, why, who is the man that doth not know that the city of the Ephesians is a devotee of the great goddess Artemis, and of that which fell down from Zeus? |
| 19:36 | these things, then, not being to be gainsaid, it is necessary for you to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly. |
| 19:37 | `For ye brought these men, who are neither temple-robbers nor speaking evil of your goddess; |
| 19:38 | if indeed, therefore, Demetrius and the artificers with him with any one have a matter, court `days' are held, and there are proconsuls; let them accuse one another. |
| 19:39 | `And if ye seek after anything concerning other matters, in the legal assembly it shall be determined; |
| 19:40 | for we are also in peril of being accused of insurrection in regard to this day, there being no occasion by which we shall be able to give an account of this concourse;' |
| 19:41 | and these things having said, he dismissed the assembly. |
| 19:1 | It fortuned whyll Appollo was at Corinthum that Paul passed thorow the vpper costes and came to Ephesus and foude certayne disciples |
| 19:2 | and sayd vnto them: have ye receaved the holy gost sence ye beleved? And they sayde vnto him: no we have not hearde whether ther be eny holy goost or no. |
| 19:3 | And he sayd vnto them: wher wt were ye then baptised? And they sayd: with Iohns baptim |
| 19:4 | Then sayde Paul: Iohn verely bapiised with the baptim of repentaunce sayinge vnto the people that they shuld beleve on him which shuld come after him: that is on Christ Iesus. |
| 19:5 | When they hearde that they were baptised in the name of the lorde Iesu. |
| 19:6 | And Paul layde his hondes apon them and the holy gost came on them and they spake with tonges and prophesied |
| 19:7 | and all the men were aboute .xii. |
| 19:8 | And he went into the synagoge and behaved him selfe boldely for the space of thre monethes disputynge and gevynge them exhortacions of the kyngdome of God. |
| 19:9 | When dyvers wexed harde herted and beleved not but spake evyll of the waye and that before the multitude: he departed from them and seperated the disciples. And disputed dayly in ye scole of one called Tyranus. |
| 19:10 | And this contynued by the space of two yeares: so yt all they which dwelt in Asia hearde the worde of the lorde Iesu bothe Iewes and Grekes. |
| 19:11 | And god wrought no small miracles by the hondes of Paul: |
| 19:12 | so that from his body were brought vnto the sicke napkyns or partlettes and the diseases departed from the and the evyll spretes went out of them. |
| 19:13 | Then certayne of the vagabounde Iewes exorcistes toke apon them to call over them which had evyll spretes the name of the lorde Iesus sayinge: We adiure you by Iesu who Paul preacheth. |
| 19:14 | And ther were seven sonnes of one Sceva a Iewe and chefe of the prestes which dyd so. |
| 19:15 | And the evyll sprete answered and sayde: Iesus I knowe and Paul I knowe: but who are ye? |
| 19:16 | And ye man in who the evyll sprete was ranne on the and overcame the and prevayled agaynst them so that they fledde out of that housse naked and wouded. |
| 19:17 | And this was knowen to all ye Iewes and Grekes also which dwelt at Ephesus and feare came on them all and they magnified the name of ye lorde Iesus. |
| 19:18 | And many yt beleved came and confessed and shewed their workes. |
| 19:19 | Many of the which vsed curious craftes brought their bokes and burned the before all men and they counted the price of the and foude it fifty thousande silverlynges. |
| 19:20 | So myghtely grewe ye worde of god and prevayled. |
| 19:21 | After these thinges were ended Paul purposed in the sprete to passe over Macedonia and Achaia and to goo to Ierusalem saying: After I have bene there I must also se Rome. |
| 19:22 | So sent he into Macedonia two of the that ministred vnto him Timotheus and Erastus: but he him selfe remayned in Asia for a season. |
| 19:23 | The same tyme ther arose no lytell a do aboute that waye. |
| 19:24 | For a certayne man named Demetrius a silvermyth which made silver schrynes for Diana was not a lytell beneficiall vnto the craftes men. |
| 19:25 | Which he called to geder with the worke men of lyke occupacion and sayd: Syrs ye knowe that by this crafte we have vauntage. |
| 19:26 | Moreover ye se and heare that not alone at Ephesus but almost thorowe oute all Asia this Paul hath persuaded and turned awaye moche people saying yt they be not goddes which are made wt hondes. |
| 19:27 | So that not only this oure crafte cometh into parell to be set at nought: but also that ye temple of ye greate goddas Diana shuld be despysed and her magnificence shuld be destroyed which all Asia and the worlde worshippeth. |
| 19:28 | When they hearde these sayinges they were full of wrathe and cryed out saying: Greate is Diana of the Ephesians. |
| 19:29 | And all the cite was on a roore and they russhed in to the comen hall with one assent and caught Gayus and Aristarcus men of Macedonia Pauls companios. |
| 19:30 | When Paul wolde have entred in vnto the people ye disciples suffered him not. |
| 19:31 | Certayne also of ye chefe of Asia which were his frendes sent vnto him desyrynge him that he wolde not preace into the comen hall. |
| 19:32 | Some cryed one thinge and some another and the congregacion was all out of quiet and ye moare parte knewe not wherfore they were come togeder. |
| 19:33 | Some of the company drue forth Alexander the Iewes thrustynge him forwardes. Alexander beckened with the honde and wolde have geven ye people an answer. |
| 19:34 | When they knewe ye he was a Iewe ther arose a shoute almost for the space of two houres of all men cryinge greate is Diana of the Ephesians. |
| 19:35 | When the toune clarcke had ceased the people he sayd: ye men of Ephesus what man is it that knoweth not how that the cite of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddas Diana and of ye ymage which came fro heven. |
| 19:36 | Seinge then yt no man sayth here agaynst ye ought to be content and to do nothinge rasshly: |
| 19:37 | For ye have brought hyther these me whiche are nether robbers of churches nor yet despisers of youre goddes. |
| 19:38 | Wherfore yf Demetrius and the craftes men which are wt him have eny sayinge to eny man the lawe is open and ther are ruelars let the accuse one another. |
| 19:39 | Yf ye goo about eny other thinge it maye be determined in a lawfull cogregacion |
| 19:40 | For we are in ieoperdy to be accused of this dayes busines: for as moche as ther is no cause wherby we maye geve a rekenynge of this concourse of people. |
| 19:41 | And when he had thus spoken he let the congregacion departe. |
| 19:1 | Bvt it fortuned whan Apollo was at Corinthum, that Paul walked thorow the vpper coastes, and came to Ephesus, and founde certayne disciples, |
| 19:2 | vnto whom he sayde: Haue ye receaued ye holy goost, sence ye beleued? They sayde vnto hi: We haue not herde, whether there be an holy goost. |
| 19:3 | He sayde vnto them: Where with then were ye baptysed? They sayde: With the baptyme of Ihon. |
| 19:4 | Paul sayde: Ihon baptysed with the baptyme of repentaunce, and spake vnto ye people, that they shulde beleue on him, which shulde come after him, that is, on Iesus, that the same is Christ. |
| 19:5 | Whan they herde that, they were baptysed in the name of the LORDE Iesu. |
| 19:6 | And whan Paul layed the hades on the, the holy goost came vpon them, and they spake with tunges, and prophecied. |
| 19:7 | And all the men were aboute twolue. |
| 19:8 | He wete in to ye synagoge, and preached boldly thre monethes longe, teachinge, and geuynge them exortacions of the kyngdome of God. |
| 19:9 | But whan dyuerse waxed herde herted, and beleued not, and spake euell of the waye of the LORDE before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, and disputed daylye in the scole of one called Tyrannus. |
| 19:10 | And this was done two yeares loge, so that all they which dwelt in Asia, herde the worde of the LORDE Iesu, both Iewes & Grekes. |
| 19:11 | And God wroughte no small miracles by the handes of Paul, |
| 19:12 | so that from his body there were broughte napkyns or partlettes vnto the sicke, and the diseases departed from them, and the euell spretes wente out of them. |
| 19:13 | But certayne of the vagabounde Iewes which were coniurers, vndertoke to name ye name of the LORDE Iesus, ouer those that had euell spretes, and sayde: We charge you by Iesus whom Paul preacheth. |
| 19:14 | They were seuen sonnes of one Sceua a Iewe the hye prest, which dyd so. |
| 19:15 | The euell sprete answered, and sayde: Iesus I knowe, and Paul I knowe, but who are ye? |
| 19:16 | And the ma in who the euell sprete was, ranne vpon them, and ouercame them, and cast them vnder him, so that they fled out of the same house naked and wounded. |
| 19:17 | This was knowne vnto all the Iewes and Grekes which dwelt at Ephesus, and there fell a feare vpon them all. And ye name of the LORDE Iesus was magnified. |
| 19:18 | Many of the also that beleued, came and cofessed, and shewed their workes. |
| 19:19 | But many of them that had vsed curious craftes, broughte the bokes together, and burnte them openly: and they counted the pryce of them, and founde it of money fiftye thousande pens. |
| 19:20 | So mightely grewe ye worde of the LORDE, and preuayled. |
| 19:21 | Whan this was done, Paul purposed in sprete to take his iourney thorow Macedonia and Achaia, and to go to Ierusale, and sayde: After that I haue bene there, I must se Rome also. |
| 19:22 | And he sent into Macedonia two that mynistred vnto him, Timotheus and Erastus. But he himselfe remayned in Asia for a season. |
| 19:23 | At the same tyme there rose no litle a doo aboute that waye. |
| 19:24 | For a certayne man named Demetrius a goldsmyth, which made syluer shrynes for Diana, and broughte them of the crafte no small vauntage. |
| 19:25 | Them he gathered together, and the feloweworkme of the same occupacion, and sayde: Syrs, ye knowe that by this crafte we haue vauntage, |
| 19:26 | and ye se and heare, that not onely at Ephesus, but almost also thorow out all Asia, this Paul turneth awaye moch people with his persuadynge, and sayeth: They be not goddes that are made with hondes. |
| 19:27 | Howbeit it shal not onely brynge oure occupacion to this poynte to be set at naught, but also the temple of greate Diana shal from hence forth be despysed, and hir maiestye also shalbe destroyed, who neuertheles all Asia and the worlde worshippeth. |
| 19:28 | Whan they herde this, they were full of wrath, cried out, and sayde: Greate is Diana of the Ephesians. |
| 19:29 | And all ye cite was on a roore, and they russhed in with one assent in to the open place, and toke Gaius and Aristarchus of Macedonia, Pauls companyons. |
| 19:30 | Whan Paul wolde haue gone in amonge the people, the disciples suffred him not. |
| 19:31 | Certayne also of ye chefe of Asia which were Pauls good frendes, sent vnto him, and desyred him, that he shulde not preasse in to the open place. |
| 19:32 | Some cried one thinge, some another. And the congregacion was out of quyete, and the more parte knewe not wherfore they were come together. |
| 19:33 | Some of the people drue forth Alexander, whan ye Iewes thrust him forwarde. Alexader beckened with the hande, and wolde haue geuen the people an answere. |
| 19:34 | But whan they knewe that he was a Iewe, there arose a shoute of all, and cried the space of two houres: Greate is Diana of the Ephesians. |
| 19:35 | Whan the towne clarke had stylled the people, he sayde: Ye men of Ephesus, what man is it which knoweth not, that the cite of ye Ephesias is a worshipper of the greate goddesse Diana, and of the heauenly ymage? |
| 19:36 | Seinge now that this can not be sayde agaynst, ye ought to be contente, and to do nothinge without aduysement. |
| 19:37 | Ye haue broughte hither these men, which are nether churchrobbers ner blasphemers off youre goddesse. |
| 19:38 | But yff Demetrius and they that are craftesmen with him, haue ought to saye vnto eny man, the lawe is open, and there are rulers, let them accuse one another. |
| 19:39 | But yf ye wil go aboute eny other thinge, it maye be determyned in a laufull congregacion. |
| 19:40 | For we stonde in ioperdy to be accused of this dayes vproure: and yet is there no man giltye, of whom we mighte geue a rekenynge of this vproure. |
| 19:41 | And whan he had sayde this, he let the congregacion departe. |
