James - Chapter: 2

>
2:1Mi britheren, nyle ye haue the feith of oure Lord Jhesu Crist of glorie, in accepcioun of persoones.
2:2For if a man `that hath a goldun ring, and in a feire clothing, cometh in youre cumpany, and a pore man entrith in a foul clothing,
2:3and if ye biholden in to hym that is clothid with clere clothing, and if ye seie to hym, Sitte thou here wel; but to the pore man ye seien, Stonde thou there, ethir sitte vndur the stool of my feet; whether ye demen not anentis you silf,
2:4and ben maad domesmen of wickid thouytis?
2:5Heere ye, my moost dereworthe britheren, whethir God chees not pore men in this world, riche in feith, and eiris of the kyngdom, that God bihiyte to men that louen him?
2:6But ye han dispisid the pore man. Whether riche men oppressen not you bi power, and thei drawen you to domes?
2:7Whether thei blasfemen not the good name, that is clepid to help on you?
2:8Netheles if ye performen the kingis lawe, bi scripturis, Thou schalt loue thi neiybour as thi silf, ye don wel.
2:9But if ye taken persones, ye worchen synne, and ben repreued of the lawe, as trespasseris.
2:10And who euere kepith al the lawe, but offendith in oon, he is maad gilti of alle.
2:11For he that seide, Thou schalt do no letcherie, seide also, Thou schalt not sle; that if thou doist not letcherie, but thou sleest, thou art maad trespassour of the lawe.
2:12Thus speke ye, and thus do ye, as bigynnynge to be demyd bi the lawe of fredom.
2:13For whi dom with out merci is to hym, that doith no mercy; but merci aboue reisith dom.
2:14Mi britheren, what schal it profite, if ony man seie that he hath feith, but he hath not the werkis? whether feith schal mowe saue hym?
2:15And if a brother ethir sister be nakid, and han nede of ech daies lyuelode,
2:16and if ony of you seie to hem, Go ye in pees, be ye maad hoot, and be ye fillid; but if ye yyuen not to hem tho thingis that ben necessarie to bodi, what schal it profite?
2:17So also feith, if it hath not werkis, is deed in it silf.
2:18But summan schal seie, Thou hast feith, and Y haue werkis; schewe thou to me thi feith with out werkis, and Y schal schewe to thee my feith of werkis.
2:19Thou bileuest, that o God is; thou doist wel; and deuelis bileuen, and tremblen.
2:20But wolt thou wite, thou veyn man, that feith with out werkis is idul?
2:21Whether Abraham, oure fadir, was not iustified of werkis, offringe Ysaac, his sone, on the auter?
2:22Therfor thou seest, that feith wrouyte with hise werkis, and his feith was fillid of werkis.
2:23And the scripture was fillid, seiynge, Abraham bileuede to God, and it was arettid to hym to riytwisnesse, and he was clepid the freend of God.
2:24Ye seen that a man is iustified of werkis, and not of feith oneli.
2:25In lijk maner, and whether also Raab, the hoore, was not iustified of werkis, and resseyuede the messangeris, and sente hem out bi anothir weie?
2:26For as the bodi with out spirit is deed, so also feith with out werkis is deed.

2:1My brethren, haue not the faith of our glorious Lord Iesus Christ in respect of persons.
2:2For if there come into your company a man with a golde ring, and in goodly apparell, and there come in also a poore man in vile raiment,
2:3And ye haue a respect to him that weareth the gaie clothing; and say vnto him, Sit thou here in a goodly place, and say vnto the poore, Stand thou there, or sit here vnder my footestoole,
2:4Are yee not partiall in your selues, and are become iudges of euill thoughts?
2:5Hearken my beloued brethren, hath not God chosen the poore of this worlde, that they should be rich in faith, and heires of the kingdome which he promised to them that loue him?
2:6But ye haue despised the poore. Doe not the riche oppresse you by tyrannie, and doe not they drawe you before the iudgement seates?
2:7Doe nor they blaspheme the worthie Name after which yee be named?
2:8But if yee fulfill the royall Lawe according to the Scripture, which saith, Thou shalt loue thy neighbour as thy selfe, yee doe well.
2:9But if yee regarde the persons, yee commit sinne, and are rebuked of the Lawe, as transgressours.
2:10For whosoeuer shall keepe the whole Lawe, and yet faileth in one poynt, hee is guiltie of all.
2:11For he that saide, Thou shalt not commit adulterie, saide also, Thou shalt not kill. Nowe though thou doest none adulterie, yet if thou killest, thou art a transgressour of the Lawe.
2:12So speake ye, and so doe, as they that shall be iudged by the Lawe of libertie.
2:13For there shalbe condemnation merciles to him that sheweth not mercie, and mercie reioyceth against condemnation.
2:14What auaileth it, my brethren, though a man saith he hath faith, when he hath no workes? can that faith saue him?
2:15For if a brother or a sister bee naked and destitute of daily foode,
2:16And one of you say vnto them, Depart in peace: warme your selues, and fil your bellies, notwithstading ye giue them not those things which are needefull to the body, what helpeth it?
2:17Euen so the faith, if it haue no woorkes, is dead in it selfe.
2:18But some man might say, Thou hast the faith, and I haue woorkes: shewe me thy faith out of thy woorkes, and I will shewe thee my faith by my woorkes.
2:19Thou beleeuest that there is one God: thou doest well: the deuils also beleeue it, and tremble.
2:20But wilt thou vnderstand, O thou vaine man, that the faith which is without workes, is dead?
2:21Was not Abraham our father iustified through workes, when he offred Isaac his sonne vpon the altar?
2:22Seest thou not that the faith wrought with his workes? and through the workes was the faith made perfect.
2:23And the Scripture was fulfilled which sayeth, Abraham beleeued God, and it was imputed vnto him for righteousnesse: and hee was called the friende of God.
2:24Ye see then howe that of workes a man is iustified, and not of faith onely.
2:25Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot iustified through workes, when she had receiued ye messengers, and sent them out another way?
2:26For as the body without ye spirit is dead, euen so the faith without workes is dead.

2:1My brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with personal favoritism.
2:2Because, if there should come into your assembly a man with a gold ring, in fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man in filthy clothes,
2:3and you have respect to the one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, "You sit here in a good place," and say to the poor person, "You stand there," or, "Sit here at my footstool,"
2:4have you not shown personal favoritism among yourselves, and have become judges with evil thoughts?
2:5Listen, my beloved brethren: Has not God also chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?
2:6But you have despised the poor. Do not also the rich oppress you and drag you before the courts?
2:7Do they not blaspheme that worthy name by which you are called?
2:8If you fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you do well;
2:9but if you show personal favoritism, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors.
2:10Because, whoever shall keep the entire law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.
2:11Because, He who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder." Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.
2:12So speak and so do as those who will be judged by the law of liberty.
2:13Because, judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. And mercy triumphs over judgment.
2:14What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?
2:15If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food,
2:16and one of you says to them, "Depart in peace, be warmed and filled," but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?
2:17So likewise faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
2:18Yes, someone may say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
2:19You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe, and tremble!
2:20But do you want to know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
2:21Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
2:22Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?
2:23And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was imputed to him for righteousness." And he was called the Friend of God.
2:24You see then how that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.
2:25Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?
2:26Because, as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
