| 3:1 | Likewise, ye wiues, be in subiection to your owne husbands, that if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be wonne by the conuersation of the wiues: |
| 3:2 | While they beholde your chaste conuersation coupled with feare: |
| 3:3 | Whose adorning, let it not bee that outward adorning, of plaiting the haire, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparell. |
| 3:4 | But let it bee the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, euen the ornament of a meeke and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. |
| 3:5 | For after this manner in the olde time, the holy women also who trusted in God adorned themselues, beeing in subiection vnto their owne husbands. |
| 3:6 | Euen as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him Lord, whose daughters ye are as long as ye doe well, and are not afraid with any amazement. |
| 3:7 | Likewise ye husbands, dwel with them according to knowledge, giuing honour vnto the wife as vnto the weaker vessel, and as being heires together of the grace of life, that your prayers be not hindered. |
| 3:8 | Finally be ye all of one minde, hauing compassion one of another, loue as brethren, be pitifull, be courteous, |
| 3:9 | Not rendring euill for euill, or railing for railing: but contrarywise blessing, knowing that yee are thereunto called, that ye should inherite a blessing. |
| 3:10 | For hee that will loue life, and see good dayes, let him refraine his tongue from euil, and his lips that they speake no guile: |
| 3:11 | Let him eschew euil and do good, let him seeke peace and ensue it. |
| 3:12 | For the eyes of the Lord are ouer the righteous, and his eares are open vnto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that doe euill. |
| 3:13 | And who is hee that will harme you, if ye bee followers of that which is good? |
| 3:14 | But and if ye suffer for righteousnes sake, happy are ye, and be not afraid of their terrour, neither be troubled: |
| 3:15 | But sanctifie the Lord God in your hearts, & be ready alwayes to giue an answere to euery man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you, with meekenesse and feare: |
| 3:16 | Hauing a good conscience, that whereas they speake euill of you, as of euill doers, they may bee ashamed that falsly accuse your good conuersation in Christ. |
| 3:17 | For it is better, if the will of God be so, that yee suffer for well doing, then for euill doing. |
| 3:18 | For Christ also hath once suffered for sinnes, the iust for the vniust, that he might bring vs to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit. |
| 3:19 | By which also he went and preached vnto the spirits in prison, |
| 3:20 | Which sometime were disobedient, when once the long-suffering of God waited in the dayes of Noah, while the Arke was a preparing: wherein few, that is, eight soules were saued by water. |
| 3:21 | The like figure whereunto, euen Baptisme, doth also now saue vs, (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answere of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Iesus Christ. |
| 3:22 | Who is gone into heauen, and is on the right hand of God, Angels, and authorities, and powers being made subiect vnto him. |
| 3:1 | Likewyse let the wyues be in subieccion to their hussbandes, that euen they which beleue not the worde, maye without the worde be wonne by ye couersacion of the wyues, |
| 3:2 | whan they beholde yor pure conuersacion in feare. |
| 3:3 | Whose apparell shal not be outwarde wt broyded heer, & hanginge on of golde, or in puttynge on of gorgious araye, |
| 3:4 | but let ye inwarde ma of ye hert be vncorrupte wt a meke & a quyete sprete, which before God is moch set by. |
| 3:5 | For after this maner in the olde tyme, dyd ye holy weme which trusted in God, tyer the selues, & were obedient vnto their hussbades: |
| 3:6 | Euen as Sara obeyed Abraham, and called him lorde: whose doughters ye are, as loge as ye do well, not beynge afrayed for eny trouble. |
| 3:7 | Likewyse ye men, dwell with them acordinge vnto knowlege, geuynge honor vnto the wife, as to the weaker vessel: & as vnto the yt are heyres with you of the grace of life, that youre prayers be not let. |
| 3:8 | But in conclusion be ye all of one mynde, one suffre with another, loue as brethren, be pitefull, be curteous. |
| 3:9 | Recopence not euell for euell, nether rebuke for rebuke: but cotrary wyse, blesse: and knowe that ye are called therto, euen yt ye shulde be heyres of ye blessynge. |
| 3:10 | For who so listeth to lyue, and wolde fayne se good dayes, Let him refrayne his tonge from euell, and his lippes yt they speake no gyle. |
| 3:11 | Let him eschue euell, & do good: Let him seke peace and ensue it. |
| 3:12 | For ye eyes of the LORDE are ouer the righteous, & his eares are open vnto their prayers. But ye face of the LORDE beholdeth the yt do euell. |
| 3:13 | And who is it that can harme you, yf ye folowe that which is good? |
| 3:14 | Not withstodinge blessed are ye, yf ye suffre for righteousnes sake Feare not ye their threatnynge, nether be troubled, |
| 3:15 | but sanctifye the LORDE God in youre hertes. Be ready allwayes to geue an answere to euery ma, that axeth you a reason of the hope that is in you, and that with mekenes & feare, |
| 3:16 | hauynge a good conscience, that they which bacbyte you as euell doers, maye be ashamed, that they haue falsely accused youre good couersacion in Christ. |
| 3:17 | For it is better (yf the wyll of God be so) that ye suffre for well doynge, the for euell doynge. |
| 3:18 | For as moch as Christ hath once suffred for oure synnes, ye iust for the vniust, for to brynge vs to God: & was slayne after the flesh, but quyckened after the sprete. |
| 3:19 | In the which sprete he also wente, and preached vnto ye spretes that were in preson, |
| 3:20 | which in tyme past beleued not, whan God once a bode and suffred pacietly in the tyme of Noe, whyle the Arke was a preparynge: Wherin fewe (that is to saye eight soules) were saued by water. |
| 3:21 | Which signifieth baptyme yt now saueth vs: not ye puttinge awaye of the fylth of the flesh, but in yt a good cosciece cosenteth vnto God by ye resurreccion of Iesus Christ, |
| 3:22 | which is on the righte hande of God, and is gone in to heaue, angels, power and mighte subdued vnto him. |
| 3:1 | Also wymmen be thei suget to her hosebondis; that if ony man bileue not to the word, bi the conuersacioun of wymmen thei be wonnun with out word. |
| 3:2 | And biholde ye in drede youre hooli conuersacioun. |
| 3:3 | Of whiche `ther be not with outforth curious ournyng of heer, ether doyng aboute of gold, ethir ournyng of clothing; |
| 3:4 | but thilke that is the hid man of herte, in vncorrupcioun, and of mylde spirit, which is riche in the siyt of God. |
| 3:5 | For so sumtyme hooli wymmen hopinge in God ourneden hem silf, and weren suget to her owne hosebondis. |
| 3:6 | As Sara obeied to Abraham, and clepide hym lord; of whom ye ben douytris wel doynge, and not dredynge ony perturbacioun. |
| 3:7 | Also men dwelle togidre, and bi kunnyng yyue ye onoure to the wommanus freeltee, as to the more feble, and as to euen eiris of grace and of lijf, that youre preieris be not lettid. |
| 3:8 | And in feith alle of oon wille in preier be ye eche suffringe with othere, loueris of britherhod, merciful, mylde, meke; |
| 3:9 | not yeldinge yuel for yuel, nether cursing for cursing, but ayenward blessinge; for in this thing ye ben clepid, that ye welde blessinge bi eritage. |
| 3:10 | For he that wole loue lijf, and se goode daies, constreyne his tunge from yuel, and hise lippis, that thei speke not gile. |
| 3:11 | And bowe he from yuel, and do good; seke he pees, and perfitli sue it. |
| 3:12 | For the iyen of the Lord ben on iust men, and hise eris on the preieris of hem; but the cheer of the Lord is on men that don yuels. |
| 3:13 | And who is it that schal anoye you, if ye ben sueris and louyeris of goodnesse? |
| 3:14 | But also if ye suffren ony thing for riytwisnesse, ye ben blessid; but drede ye not the drede of hem, that ye be not disturblid. |
| 3:15 | But halewe ye the Lord Crist in youre hertis, and euermore be ye redi to satisfaccioun to ech man axynge you resoun of that feith and hope that is in you, |
| 3:16 | but with myldenesse and drede, hauynge good conscience; that in that thing that thei bacbiten of you, thei ben confoundid, whiche chalengen falsly youre good conuersacioun in Crist. |
| 3:17 | For it is betere that ye do wel, and suffre, if the wille of God wole, than doynge yuele. |
| 3:18 | For also Crist onys diede for oure synnes, he iust for vniust, that he schulde offre to God vs, maad deed in fleisch, but maad quik in spirit. |
| 3:19 | For which thing he cam in spirit, and also to hem that weren closid togidre in prisoun prechide; |
| 3:20 | whiche weren sum tyme vnbileueful, whanne thei abididen the pacience of God in the daies of Noe, whanne the schip was maad, in which a few, that is to seie, eiyte soulis weren maad saaf bi water. |
| 3:21 | And so baptym of lijk forme makith vs saaf; not the puttyng awei of the filthis of fleisch, but the axyng of a good conscience in God, bi the ayenrysyng of oure Lord Jhesu Crist, that is in the riyt half of God, |
| 3:22 | and swolewith deth, that we schulden be made eiris of euerlastinge lijf. He yede in to heuene, and aungelis, and powers, and vertues, ben maad sugetis to hym. |
