Nehemiah - Chapter: 4


4:1	But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.
4:2	And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?
4:3	Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall.
4:4	Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:
4:5	And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders.
4:6	So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.
4:7	But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,
4:8	And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.
4:9	Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
4:10	And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.
4:11	And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.
4:12	And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.
4:13	Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
4:14	And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.
4:15	And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.
4:16	And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.
4:17	They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.
4:18	For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.
4:19	And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.
4:20	In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.
4:21	So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.
4:22	Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.
4:23	So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.


4:1	(3:33) ויהי כאשׁר שׁמע סנבלט כי אנחנו בונים את החומה ויחר לו ויכעס הרבה וילעג על היהודים׃
4:2	(3:34) ויאמר לפני אחיו וחיל שׁמרון ויאמר מה היהודים האמללים עשׂים היעזבו להם היזבחו היכלו ביום היחיו את האבנים מערמות העפר והמה שׂרופות׃
4:3	(3:35) וטוביה העמני אצלו ויאמר גם אשׁר הם בונים אם יעלה שׁועל ופרץ חומת אבניהם׃
4:4	(3:36) שׁמע אלהינו כי היינו בוזה והשׁב חרפתם אל ראשׁם ותנם לבזה בארץ שׁביה׃
4:5	(3:37) ואל תכס על עונם וחטאתם מלפניך אל תמחה כי הכעיסו לנגד הבונים׃
4:6	(3:38) ונבנה את החומה ותקשׁר כל החומה עד חציה ויהי לב לעם לעשׂות׃
4:7	(4:1) ויהי כאשׁר שׁמע סנבלט וטוביה והערבים והעמנים והאשׁדודים כי עלתה ארוכה לחמות ירושׁלם כי החלו הפרצים להסתם ויחר להם מאד׃
4:8	(4:2) ויקשׁרו כלם יחדו לבוא להלחם בירושׁלם ולעשׂות לו תועה׃
4:9	(4:3) ונתפלל אל אלהינו ונעמיד משׁמר עליהם יומם ולילה מפניהם׃
4:10	(4:4) ויאמר יהודה כשׁל כח הסבל והעפר הרבה ואנחנו לא נוכל לבנות בחומה׃
4:11	(4:5) ויאמרו צרינו לא ידעו ולא יראו עד אשׁר נבוא אל תוכם והרגנום והשׁבתנו את המלאכה׃
4:12	(4:6) ויהי כאשׁר באו היהודים הישׁבים אצלם ויאמרו לנו עשׂר פעמים מכל המקמות אשׁר תשׁובו עלינו׃
4:13	(4:7) ואעמיד מתחתיות למקום מאחרי לחומה בצחחיים ואעמיד את העם למשׁפחות עם חרבתיהם רמחיהם וקשׁתתיהם׃
4:14	(4:8) וארא ואקום ואמר אל החרים ואל הסגנים ואל יתר העם אל תיראו מפניהם את אדני הגדול והנורא זכרו והלחמו על אחיכם בניכם ובנתיכם נשׁיכם ובתיכם׃
4:15	(4:9) ויהי כאשׁר שׁמעו אויבינו כי נודע לנו ויפר האלהים את עצתם ונשׁוב כלנו אל החומה אישׁ אל מלאכתו׃
4:16	(4:10) ויהי מן היום ההוא חצי נערי עשׂים במלאכה וחצים מחזיקים והרמחים המגנים והקשׁתות והשׁרינים והשׂרים אחרי כל בית יהודה׃
4:17	(4:11) הבונים בחומה והנשׂאים בסבל עמשׂים באחת ידו עשׂה במלאכה ואחת מחזקת השׁלח׃
4:18	(4:12) והבונים אישׁ חרבו אסורים על מתניו ובונים והתוקע בשׁופר אצלי׃
4:19	(4:13) ואמר אל החרים ואל הסגנים ואל יתר העם המלאכה הרבה ורחבה ואנחנו נפרדים על החומה רחוקים אישׁ מאחיו׃
4:20	(4:14) במקום אשׁר תשׁמעו את קול השׁופר שׁמה תקבצו אלינו אלהינו ילחם׃
4:21	(4:15) ואנחנו עשׂים במלאכה וחצים מחזיקים ברמחים מעלות השׁחר עד צאת הכוכבים׃
4:22	(4:16) גם בעת ההיא אמרתי לעם אישׁ ונערו ילינו בתוך ירושׁלם והיו לנו הלילה משׁמר והיום מלאכה׃
4:23	(4:17) ואין אני ואחי ונערי ואנשׁי המשׁמר אשׁר אחרי אין אנחנו פשׁטים בגדינו אישׁ שׁלחו המים׃


4:1	And it cometh to pass, when Sanballat hath heard that we are building the wall, that it is displeasing to him, and he is very angry and mocketh at the Jews,
4:2	and saith before his brethren and the force of Samaria, yea, he saith, `What `are' the weak Jews doing? are they left to themselves? do they sacrifice? do they complete in a day? do they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish? -- and they burnt!'
4:3	And Tobiah the Ammonite `is' by him and saith, `Also, that which they are building -- if a fox doth go up, then it hath broken down their stone wall.'
4:4	Hear, O our God, for we have been despised; and turn back their reproach on their own head, and give them for a spoil in a land of captivity;
4:5	and do not cover over their iniquity, and their sin from before Thee let not be blotted out, for they have provoked to anger -- over-against those building.
4:6	And we build the wall, and all the wall is joined -- unto its half, and the people have a heart to work.
4:7	And it cometh to pass, when Sanballat hath heard, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, that lengthening hath gone up to the walls of Jerusalem, that the breeches have begun to be stopped, then it is very displeasing to them,
4:8	and they conspire, all of them together, to come in to fight against Jerusalem, and to do to it injury.
4:9	And we pray unto our God, and appoint a watch against them, by day and by night, because of them.
4:10	And Judah saith, `The power of the burden-bearers hath become feeble, and the rubbish `is' abundant, and we are not able to build on the wall.'
4:11	And our adversaries say, `They do not know, nor see, till that we come in to their midst, and have slain them, and caused the work to cease.'
4:12	And it cometh to pass, when the Jews have come who are dwelling near them, that they say to us ten times from all the places whither ye return -- `they are' against us.
4:13	And I appoint at the lowest of the places, at the back of the wall, in the clear places, yea, I appoint the people, by their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
4:14	And I see, and rise up, and say unto the freemen, and unto the prefects, and unto the rest of the people, `Be not afraid of them; the Lord, the great and the fearful, remember ye, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.'
4:15	And it cometh to pass, when our enemies have heard that it hath been known to us, and God doth frustrate their counsel, and we turn back, all of us, unto the wall, each unto his work;
4:16	yea, it cometh to pass, from that day, half of my servants are working in the business, and half of them are keeping hold of both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the coats of mail; and the heads `are' behind all the house of Judah.
4:17	The builders on the wall, and the bearers of the burden, those lading, `each' with one of his hands is working in the business, and one is laying hold of the missile.
4:18	And the builders `are' each with his sword, girded on his loins, and building, and he who is blowing with a trumpet `is' beside me.
4:19	And I say unto the freemen, and unto the prefects, and unto the rest of the people, `The work is abundant, and large, and we are separated on the wall, far off one from another;
4:20	in the place that ye hear the voice of the trumpet thither ye are gathered unto us; our God doth fight for us.'
4:21	And we are working in the business, and half of them are keeping hold of the spears, from the going up of the dawn till the coming forth of the stars.
4:22	Also, at that time I said to the people, `Let each with his servant lodge in the midst of Jerusalem, and they have been to us by night a guard, and by day `for' the work:'
4:23	and there are none -- I and my brethren and my servants, the men of the guard who `are' after me -- there are none of us putting off our garments, each `hath' his vessel of water.
