Job - Chapter: 1


1:1	There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.
1:2	And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
1:3	His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
1:4	And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
1:5	And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
1:6	Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
1:7	And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
1:8	And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
1:9	Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
1:10	Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
1:11	But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
1:12	And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
1:13	And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:
1:14	And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:
1:15	And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
1:16	While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
1:17	While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
1:18	While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:
1:19	And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
1:20	Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,
1:21	And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
1:22	In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.


1:1	אישׁ היה בארץ עוץ איוב שׁמו והיה האישׁ ההוא תם וישׁר וירא אלהים וסר מרע׃
1:2	ויולדו לו שׁבעה בנים ושׁלושׁ בנות׃
1:3	ויהי מקנהו שׁבעת אלפי צאן ושׁלשׁת אלפי גמלים וחמשׁ מאות צמד בקר וחמשׁ מאות אתונות ועבדה רבה מאד ויהי האישׁ ההוא גדול מכל בני קדם׃
1:4	והלכו בניו ועשׂו משׁתה בית אישׁ יומו ושׁלחו וקראו לשׁלשׁת אחיתיהם לאכל ולשׁתות עמהם׃
1:5	ויהי כי הקיפו ימי המשׁתה וישׁלח איוב ויקדשׁם והשׁכים בבקר והעלה עלות מספר כלם כי אמר איוב אולי חטאו בני וברכו אלהים בלבבם ככה יעשׂה איוב כל הימים׃
1:6	ויהי היום ויבאו בני האלהים להתיצב על יהוה ויבוא גם השׂטן בתוכם׃
1:7	ויאמר יהוה אל השׂטן מאין תבא ויען השׂטן את יהוה ויאמר משׁוט בארץ ומהתהלך׃
1:8	ויאמר יהוה אל השׂטן השׂמת לבך על עבדי איוב כי אין כמהו בארץ אישׁ תם וישׁר ירא אלהים וסר מרע׃
1:9	ויען השׂטן את יהוה ויאמר החנם ירא איוב אלהים׃
1:10	הלא את שׂכת בעדו ובעד ביתו ובעד כל אשׁר לו מסביב מעשׂה ידיו ברכת ומקנהו פרץ בארץ׃
1:11	ואולם שׁלח נא ידך וגע בכל אשׁר לו אם לא על פניך יברכך׃
1:12	ויאמר יהוה אל השׂטן הנה כל אשׁר לו בידך רק אליו אל תשׁלח ידך ויצא השׂטן מעם פני יהוה׃
1:13	ויהי היום ובניו ובנתיו אכלים ושׁתים יין בבית אחיהם הבכור׃
1:14	ומלאך בא אל איוב ויאמר הבקר היו חרשׁות והאתנות רעות על ידיהם׃
1:15	ותפל שׁבא ותקחם ואת הנערים הכו לפי חרב ואמלטה רק אני לבדי להגיד׃
1:16	עוד זה מדבר וזה בא ויאמר אשׁ אלהים נפלה מן השׁמים ותבער בצאן ובנערים ותאכלם ואמלטה רק אני לבדי להגיד׃
1:17	עוד זה מדבר וזה בא ויאמר כשׂדים שׂמו שׁלשׁה ראשׁים ויפשׁטו על הגמלים ויקחום ואת הנערים הכו לפי חרב ואמלטה רק אני לבדי להגיד׃
1:18	עד זה מדבר וזה בא ויאמר בניך ובנותיך אכלים ושׁתים יין בבית אחיהם הבכור׃
1:19	והנה רוח גדולה באה מעבר המדבר ויגע בארבע פנות הבית ויפל על הנערים וימותו ואמלטה רק אני לבדי להגיד׃
1:20	ויקם איוב ויקרע את מעלו ויגז את ראשׁו ויפל ארצה וישׁתחו׃
1:21	ויאמר ערם יצתי מבטן אמי וערם אשׁוב שׁמה יהוה נתן ויהוה לקח יהי שׁם יהוה מברך׃
1:22	בכל זאת לא חטא איוב ולא נתן תפלה לאלהים׃


1:1	A man there hath been in the land of Uz -- Job his name -- and that man hath been perfect and upright -- both fearing God, and turning aside from evil.
1:2	And there are borne to him seven sons and three daughters,
1:3	and his substance is seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred pairs of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a service very abundant; and that man is greater than any of the sons of the east.
1:4	And his sons have gone and made a banquet -- the house of each `in' his day -- and have sent and called to their three sisters to eat and to drink with them;
1:5	and it cometh to pass, when they have gone round the days of the banquet, that Job doth send and sanctify them, and hath risen early in the morning, and caused to ascend burnt-offerings -- the number of them all -- for Job said, `Perhaps my sons have sinned, yet blessed God in their heart.' Thus doth Job all the days.
1:6	And the day is, that sons of God come in to station themselves by Jehovah, and there doth come also the Adversary in their midst.
1:7	And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Whence comest thou?' And the Adversary answereth Jehovah and saith, `From going to and fro in the land, and from walking up and down on it.'
1:8	And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Hast thou set thy heart against My servant Job because there is none like him in the land, a man perfect and upright, fearing God, and turning aside from evil?'
1:9	And the Adversary answereth Jehovah and saith, `For nought is Job fearing God?
1:10	Hast not Thou made a hedge for him, and for his house, and for all that he hath -- round about?
1:11	The work of his hands Thou hast blessed, and his substance hath spread in the land, and yet, put forth, I pray Thee, Thy hand, and strike against anything that he hath -- if not: to Thy face he doth bless Thee!'
1:12	And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Lo, all that he hath `is' in thy hand, only unto him put not forth thy hand.' And the Adversary goeth out from the presence of Jehovah.
1:13	And the day is, that his sons and his daughters are eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their brother, the first-born.
1:14	And a messenger hath come in unto Job and saith, `The oxen have been plowing, and the she-asses feeding by their sides,
1:15	and Sheba doth fall, and take them, and the young men they have smitten by the mouth of the sword, and I am escaped -- only I alone -- to declare `it' to thee.'
1:16	While this `one' is speaking another also hath come and saith, `Fire of God hath fallen from the heavens, and burneth among the flock, and among the young men, and consumeth them, and I am escaped -- only I alone -- to declare `it' to thee.'
1:17	While this `one' is speaking another also hath come and saith, `Chaldeans made three heads, and rush on the camels, and take them, and the young men they have smitten by the mouth of the sword, and I am escaped -- only I alone -- to declare `it' to thee.'
1:18	While this `one' is speaking another also hath come and saith, `Thy sons and thy daughters are eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their brother, the first-born.
1:19	And lo, a great wind hath come from over the wilderness, and striketh against the four corners of the house, and it falleth on the young men, and they are dead, and I am escaped -- only I alone -- to declare `it' to thee.'
1:20	And Job riseth, and rendeth his robe, and shaveth his head, and falleth to the earth, and doth obeisance,
1:21	and he saith, `Naked came I forth from the womb of my mother, and naked I turn back thither: Jehovah hath given and Jehovah hath taken: let the name of Jehovah be blessed.'
1:22	In all this Job hath not sinned, nor given folly to God.
