Job - Chapter: 16

>
16:1Iob answered, and sayde:
16:2I haue oft tymes hearde soch thynges. Myserable geuers of conforte are ye, all the sorte of you.
16:3Shall not vayne wordes come yet to an ende? Or, hast thou yet eny more to saye?
16:4I coulde speake, as ye do also. But wold God, that youre soule were in my soules steade: then shuld I heape vp wordes agaynst you, and shake my heade at you.
16:5I shuld comforte you with my mouthe, and release youre payne with the talkyng of my lippes.
16:6For all my wordes, my sorow wyll ceasse: and though I holde my tonge, yet wyll it not departe from me.
16:7But now that God hath sente me aduersytie, thou hast troubled all my congregacyon.
16:8And that thou hast fylled me wyth wrynckles, my fleshe is recorde, and my leanesse ryseth vp agaynst me, and beareth wytnesse agaynst me.
16:9He is angrye at me, he hateth me and gnassheth vpon me wyth hys teth. Myne enemye skouleth vpon me wyth hys eyes.
16:10They haue opened their mouthes wyde vpon me & smytten me vpon the cheke despitefully, they gather them selues together agaynst me.
16:11God hath put me in prease with the vngodly, & delyuered me into the handes of the wycked.
16:12I was in wealth, but he hath brought me to naught. He hath taken me by the neck, he hath rent me, and sett me as a marck for him selfe.
16:13His archers compasse me rounde aboute: he wounded my loynes, and doth not spare. My bowels hath he poured vpon the ground.
16:14He hath geuen me one wound vpon another, and is fallen vpon me lyke a giaunte.
16:15I haue sowed a sack cloth vpon my skynne, & lye with my heare in the dust.
16:16My face is swollen with wepynge, and in myne eyes is the shadow of death.
16:17Howbeit, there is no wyckednesse in my handes, but my prayer is cleane.
16:18O earth couer not thou my bloude, and let my cryenge fynde no rowme.
16:19For lo, my witnesse is in heauen: & he that knoweth me, is aboue in the heygth:
16:20My frendes geue me many wordes, to scorne, and myne eye poureth out teares vnto God.
16:21O that a body might pleate with God, as one man doth with another,
16:22yet the nombre of my yeares is come, and the waye that I must go is at hande, from whence I shall not turne agayne.

16:1`A man, Joob bi name, was in the lond of Hus; and thilke man was symple, and riytful, and dredynge God, and goynge awey fro yuel.
16:2And seuene sones and thre douytris weren borun to hym;
16:3and his possessioun was seuene thousynde of scheep, and thre thousynde of camels, and fyue hundrid yockis of oxis, and fyue hundrid of femal assis, and ful myche meynee; and `thilke man was grete among alle men of the eest.
16:4And hise sones yeden, and maden feestis bi housis, ech man in his day; and thei senten, and clepiden her thre sistris, `that thei schulden ete, and drynke wiyn with hem.
16:5And whanne the daies of feeste hadden passid in to the world, Joob sente to hem, and halewide hem, and he roos eerli, and offride brent sacrifices `bi alle. For he seide, Lest perauenture my sones do synne, and curse God in her hertis. Joob dide so in alle daies.
16:6Forsothe in sum day, whanne the sones of God `weren comun to be present bifor the Lord, also Sathan cam among hem.
16:7To whom the Lord seide, Fro whennus comest thou? Which answeride, and seide, Y haue cumpassid the erthe, and Y haue walkid thorouy it.
16:8And the Lord seide to hym, Whether thou hast biholde my seruaunt Joob, that noon in erthe is lyik hym; he is a symple man, and riytful, and dredynge God, and goynge awei fro yuel?
16:9To whom Sathan answeride, Whether Joob dredith God veynli?
16:10Whethir thou hast not cumpassid hym, and his hows, and al his catel bi cumpas? Thou hast blessid the werkis of hise hondis, and hise possessioun encreesside in erthe.
16:11But stretche forth thin hond a litil, and touche thou alle thingis whiche he hath in possessioun; if he cursith not thee `in the face, `bileue not to me.
16:12Therfor the Lord seide to Sathan, Lo! alle thingis, whiche he hath, ben in thin hond; oneli stretche thou not forth thin hond in to hym. And Sathan yede out fro the face of the Lord.
16:13Sotheli whanne in sum dai `hise sones and douytris eeten, and drunken wiyn in the hows of her firste gendrid brothir,
16:14a messanger cam to Job, `whiche messanger seide, Oxis eriden, and femal assis `weren lesewid bisidis tho;
16:15and Sabeis felden yn, and token awey alle thingis, and `smytiden the children with swerd; and Y aloone ascapide for to telle to thee.
16:16And whanne he spak yit, anothir cam, and seide, Fier of God cam doun fro heuene, and wastide scheep, and `children touchid; and Y aloone ascapide for to telle `to thee.
16:17But yit the while he spak, also anothir cam, and seide, Caldeis maden thre cumpenyes, and assailiden the camels, and token tho awei, and thei smytiden `also the children with swerd; and Y aloone ascapide to telle to thee.
16:18And yit he spak, and, lo! anothir entride, and seide, While thi sones and douytris eeten, and drunken wiyn in the hows of her firste gendrid brothir,
16:19a greet wynde felde yn sudenli fro the coost of desert, and schook foure corneris of the hows, `which felde doun, and oppresside thi children, and thei ben deed; and Y aloone fledde to telle to thee.
16:20Thanne Joob roos, and to-rente hise clothis, and `with pollid heed he felde doun on the erthe, and worschipide God,
16:21and seide, Y yede nakid out of the wombe of my modir, Y schal turne ayen nakid thidur; the Lord yaf, the Lord took awei; as it pleside the Lord, so `it is doon; the name of the Lord be blessid.
16:22In alle these thingis Joob synnede not in hise lippis, nether spak ony fonned thing ayens God.

16:1Iob answered, and sayde:
16:2I haue oft tymes herde soch thinges. Miserable geuers of comforte are ye, all the sorte of you.
16:3Shall not thy vayne wordes come yet to an ende? Or, hast thou yet eny more to saye?
16:4I coude speake, as ye do also. But wolde God, that youre soule were in my soules steade: then shulde I heape vp wordes agaynst you, and shake my heade at you.
16:5I shulde comforte you with my mouth, and release youre payne with ye talkinge of my lyppes.
16:6But what shall I do? For all my wordes, my sorow wil not ceasse: and though I holde my toge, yet wil it not departe fro me.
16:7And now that I am full of payne, and all that I haue destroied
16:8(wherof my wryncles beare wytnesse) there stodeth vp a dyssembler to make me answere with lyes to my face.
16:9He is angrie at me, he hateth me, and gnassheth vpon me with his teth. Myne enemy skouleth vpon me with his eyes.
16:10They haue opened their mouthes wyde vpon me, and smytten me vpon the cheke despitefully, they haue eased the selues thorow myne aduersite.
16:11God hath geuen me ouer to the vngodly, and delyuered me in to the hondes of ye wicked.
16:12I was somtyme in wealth, but sodenly hath he brought me to naught. He hath taken me by the neck, he hath rente me, and set me, as it were a marck for him to shute at.
16:13He hath compased me rounde aboute with his dartes, he hath wounded my loynes, & not spared. My bowels hath he poured vpon the grounde.
16:14He hath geue me one wounde vpon another, and is falle vpon me like a giaunte.
16:15I haue sowed a sack cloth vpon my skynne, and lye with my strength in the dust.
16:16My face is swolle with wepinge, & myne eyes are waxen dymne.
16:17Howbeit there is no wickednesse in my hondes, and my prayer is clene.
16:18O earth, couer not my bloude, and let my crienge fynde no rowme.
16:19For lo, my witnesse is in heauen, and he that knoweth me, is aboue in the heyth.
16:20My frendes laugh me to scorne, but myne eye poureth out teares vnto God.
16:21Though a body might pleate wt God, as one man doth with another,
16:22yet the nombre of my yeares are come, & I must go the waye, from whence I shal not turne agayne.
