Exodus - Chapter: 21


21:1	Now these are the judgments which thou shalt set before them.
21:2	If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.
21:3	If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him.
21:4	If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself.
21:5	And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free:
21:6	Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever.
21:7	And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do.
21:8	If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her.
21:9	And if he have betrothed her unto his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters.
21:10	If he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish.
21:11	And if he do not these three unto her, then shall she go out free without money.
21:12	He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death.
21:13	And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him into his hand; then I will appoint thee a place whither he shall flee.
21:14	But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die.
21:15	And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death.
21:16	And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.
21:17	And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.
21:18	And if men strive together, and one smite another with a stone, or with his fist, and he die not, but keepeth his bed:
21:19	If he rise again, and walk abroad upon his staff, then shall he that smote him be quit: only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed.
21:20	And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished.
21:21	Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money.
21:22	If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.
21:23	And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life,
21:24	Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
21:25	Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.
21:26	And if a man smite the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free for his eye's sake.
21:27	And if he smite out his manservant's tooth, or his maidservant's tooth; he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake.
21:28	If an ox gore a man or a woman, that they die: then the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be quit.
21:29	But if the ox were wont to push with his horn in time past, and it hath been testified to his owner, and he hath not kept him in, but that he hath killed a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death.
21:30	If there be laid on him a sum of money, then he shall give for the ransom of his life whatsoever is laid upon him.
21:31	Whether he have gored a son, or have gored a daughter, according to this judgment shall it be done unto him.
21:32	If the ox shall push a manservant or a maidservant; he shall give unto their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned.
21:33	And if a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall dig a pit, and not cover it, and an ox or an ass fall therein;
21:34	The owner of the pit shall make it good, and give money unto the owner of them; and the dead beast shall be his.
21:35	And if one man's ox hurt another's, that he die; then they shall sell the live ox, and divide the money of it; and the dead ox also they shall divide.
21:36	Or if it be known that the ox hath used to push in time past, and his owner hath not kept him in; he shall surely pay ox for ox; and the dead shall be his own.


21:1	ואלה המשׁפטים אשׁר תשׂים לפניהם׃
21:2	כי תקנה עבד עברי שׁשׁ שׁנים יעבד ובשׁבעת יצא לחפשׁי חנם׃
21:3	אם בגפו יבא בגפו יצא אם בעל אשׁה הוא ויצאה אשׁתו עמו׃
21:4	אם אדניו יתן לו אשׁה וילדה לו בנים או בנות האשׁה וילדיה תהיה לאדניה והוא יצא בגפו׃
21:5	ואם אמר יאמר העבד אהבתי את אדני את אשׁתי ואת בני לא אצא חפשׁי׃
21:6	והגישׁו אדניו אל האלהים והגישׁו אל הדלת או אל המזוזה ורצע אדניו את אזנו במרצע ועבדו לעלם׃
21:7	וכי ימכר אישׁ את בתו לאמה לא תצא כצאת העבדים׃
21:8	אם רעה בעיני אדניה אשׁר לא יעדה והפדה לעם נכרי לא ימשׁל למכרה בבגדו׃
21:9	ואם לבנו ייעדנה כמשׁפט הבנות יעשׂה׃
21:10	אם אחרת יקח לו שׁארה כסותה וענתה לא יגרע׃
21:11	ואם שׁלשׁ אלה לא יעשׂה לה ויצאה חנם אין כסף׃
21:12	מכה אישׁ ומת מות יומת׃
21:13	ואשׁר לא צדה והאלהים אנה לידו ושׂמתי לך מקום אשׁר ינוס שׁמה׃
21:14	וכי יזד אישׁ על רעהו להרגו בערמה מעם מזבחי תקחנו למות׃
21:15	ומכה אביו ואמו מות יומת׃
21:16	וגנב אישׁ ומכרו ונמצא בידו מות יומת׃
21:17	ומקלל אביו ואמו מות יומת׃
21:18	וכי יריבן אנשׁים והכה אישׁ את רעהו באבן או באגרף ולא ימות ונפל למשׁכב׃
21:19	אם יקום והתהלך בחוץ על משׁענתו ונקה המכה רק שׁבתו יתן ורפא ירפא׃
21:20	וכי יכה אישׁ את עבדו או את אמתו בשׁבט ומת תחת ידו נקם ינקם׃
21:21	אך אם יום או יומים יעמד לא יקם כי כספו הוא׃
21:22	וכי ינצו אנשׁים ונגפו אשׁה הרה ויצאו ילדיה ולא יהיה אסון ענושׁ יענשׁ כאשׁר ישׁית עליו בעל האשׁה ונתן בפללים׃
21:23	ואם אסון יהיה ונתתה נפשׁ תחת נפשׁ׃
21:24	עין תחת עין שׁן תחת שׁן יד תחת יד רגל תחת רגל׃
21:25	כויה תחת כויה פצע תחת פצע חבורה תחת חבורה׃
21:26	וכי יכה אישׁ את עין עבדו או את עין אמתו ושׁחתה לחפשׁי ישׁלחנו תחת עינו׃
21:27	ואם שׁן עבדו או שׁן אמתו יפיל לחפשׁי ישׁלחנו תחת שׁנו׃
21:28	וכי יגח שׁור את אישׁ או את אשׁה ומת סקול יסקל השׁור ולא יאכל את בשׂרו ובעל השׁור נקי׃
21:29	ואם שׁור נגח הוא מתמל שׁלשׁם והועד בבעליו ולא ישׁמרנו והמית אישׁ או אשׁה השׁור יסקל וגם בעליו יומת׃
21:30	אם כפר יושׁת עליו ונתן פדין נפשׁו ככל אשׁר יושׁת עליו׃
21:31	או בן יגח או בת יגח כמשׁפט הזה יעשׂה׃
21:32	אם עבד יגח השׁור או אמה כסף שׁלשׁים שׁקלים יתן לאדניו והשׁור יסקל׃
21:33	וכי יפתח אישׁ בור או כי יכרה אישׁ בר ולא יכסנו ונפל שׁמה שׁור או חמור׃
21:34	בעל הבור ישׁלם כסף ישׁיב לבעליו והמת יהיה׃
21:35	וכי יגף שׁור אישׁ את שׁור רעהו ומת ומכרו את השׁור החי וחצו את כספו וגם את המת יחצון׃
21:36	או נודע כי שׁור נגח הוא מתמול שׁלשׁם ולא ישׁמרנו בעליו שׁלם ישׁלם שׁור תחת השׁור והמת יהיה׃


21:1	`And these `are' the judgments which thou dost set before them:
21:2	`When thou buyest a Hebrew servant -- six years he doth serve, and in the seventh he goeth out as a freeman for nought;
21:3	if by himself he cometh in, by himself he goeth out; if he `is' owner of a wife, then his wife hath gone out with him;
21:4	if his lord give to him a wife, and she hath borne to him sons or daughters -- the wife and her children are her lord's, and he goeth out by himself.
21:5	`And if the servant really say: I have loved my lord, my wife, and my sons -- I do not go out free;
21:6	then hath his lord brought him nigh unto God, and hath brought him nigh unto the door, or unto the side-post, and his lord hath bored his ear with an awl, and he hath served him -- to the age.
21:7	`And when a man selleth his daughter for a handmaid, she doth not go out according to the going out of the men-servants;
21:8	if evil in the eyes of her lord, so that he hath not betrothed her, then he hath let her be ransomed; to a strange people he hath not power to sell her, in his dealing treacherously with her.
21:9	`And if to his son he betroth her, according to the right of daughters he doth to her.
21:10	`If another `woman' he take for him, her food, her covering, and her habitation, he doth not withdraw;
21:11	and if these three he do not to her, then she hath gone out for nought, without money.
21:12	`He who smiteth a man so that he hath died, is certainly put to death;
21:13	as to him who hath not laid wait, and God hath brought to his hand, I have even set for thee a place whither he doth flee.
21:14	`And when a man doth presume against his neighbour to slay him with subtilty, from Mine altar thou dost take him to die.
21:15	`And he who smiteth his father or his mother is certainly put to death.
21:16	`And he who stealeth a man, and hath sold him, and he hath been found in his hand, is certainly put to death.
21:17	`And he who is reviling his father or his mother is certainly put to death.
21:18	`And when men contend, and a man hath smitten his neighbour with a stone, or with the fist, and he die not, but hath fallen on the bed;
21:19	if he rise, and hath gone up and down without on his staff, then hath the smiter been acquitted; only his cessation he giveth, and he is thoroughly healed.
21:20	`And when a man smiteth his man-servant or his handmaid, with a rod, and he hath died under his hand -- he is certainly avenged;
21:21	only if he remain a day, or two days, he is not avenged, for he `is' his money.
21:22	`And when men strive, and have smitten a pregnant woman, and her children have come out, and there is no mischief, he is certainly fined, as the husband of the woman doth lay upon him, and he hath given through the judges;
21:23	and if there is mischief, then thou hast given life for life,
21:24	eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
21:25	burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.
21:26	`And when a man smiteth the eye of his man-servant, or the eye of his handmaid, and hath destroyed it, as a freeman he doth send him away for his eye;
21:27	and if a tooth of his man-servant or a tooth of his handmaid he knock out, as a freeman he doth send him away for his tooth.
21:28	`And when an ox doth gore man or woman, and they have died, the ox is certainly stoned, and his flesh is not eaten, and the owner of the ox `is' acquitted;
21:29	and if the ox is `one' accustomed to gore heretofore, and it hath been testified to its owner, and he doth not watch it, and it hath put to death a man or woman, the ox is stoned, and its owner also is put to death.
21:30	`If atonement is laid upon him, then he hath given the ransom of his life, according to all that is laid upon him;
21:31	whether it gore a son or gore a daughter, according to this judgment it is done to him.
21:32	`If the ox gore a man-servant or a handmaid, thirty silver shekels he doth give to their lord, and the ox is stoned.
21:33	`And when a man doth open a pit, or when a man doth dig a pit, and doth not cover it, and an ox or ass hath fallen thither, --
21:34	the owner of the pit doth repay, money he doth give back to its owner, and the dead is his.
21:35	`And when a man's ox doth smite the ox of his neighbour, and it hath died, then they have sold the living ox, and halved its money, and also the dead one they do halve;
21:36	or, it hath been known that the ox is `one' accustomed to gore heretofore, and its owner doth not watch it, he certainly repayeth ox for ox, and the dead is his.
