| 8:1 | Who is wyse? Who hath knowledge to make answere? A mans wysdome maketh hys face to shine: but vnshamefastnes putteth it out of fauoure. |
| 8:2 | I must kepe the kynges commaundement, and the oth that I haue made vnto God. |
| 8:3 | Be not hastye to go out of hys syght, and se thou continue in no euell thinge: for whatsoeuer it pleaseth hym, that doeth he. |
| 8:4 | Lyke as when a kynge geueth a charge, his commaundement is myghtye: Euen so who maye saye vnto him: what doest thou? |
| 8:5 | Who so kepeth the commaundement: shall fele no harme: but a wyse mans herte discerneth the tyme & iudgement: |
| 8:6 | For euery thing will haue oportunite & iudgement, and this is the thynge that maketh men full of carefulnes and sorowe. |
| 8:7 | And why? a man knoweth not what is for to come: for who wyll tell him? |
| 8:8 | Nether is there eny man that hath power ouer the sprete, to kepe styll the sprete, ner to haue eny power in the tyme of death: is it not he also that can make an ende of the battayle, nether maye vngodlynes deliuer them that medle with all. |
| 8:9 | All these thinges haue I considered, and applied my mynde vnto euery worcke that is vnder the sonne: howe one man hath lordshype vpon another to his awne harme. |
| 8:10 | For I haue seane often the vngodly brought to ther graues: and yet they haue retorned into the citye ageyne, and came from the place of holy men, which in the citye were growen out of memory as were those also that lyued well. Thys is also a vayne thynge. |
| 8:11 | Because now that euell worckes are not hastely punysshed, the hert of man geueth hym selfe ouer vnto wyckednesse. |
| 8:12 | But though an euell persone offende an hundred tymes, & God differ gyuinge him longe lyfe: yet am I sure, that it shal go well wt them that feare God, because they haue him before their eyes. |
| 8:13 | Agayne, as for the vngodly it shall not be well wt him, nether shall he prolonge his dayes: but euen as a shadowe, so shall he be that feareth not God. |
| 8:14 | Yet is there a vanyte vpon earth: There be iust men, vnto whom it happeneth, as though they had the worckes of the vngodly: Agayne, there be vngodly, with whom it goeth as though they had the workes of the ryghteous. Thys haue I called also a vayne thyng. |
| 8:15 | Therfore I commende gladnesse, because a man hath no better thing vnder the Sunne, then to eate and dryncke, & to be mery: for that shall he haue of his labour all the dayes of his lyfe, which God geueth him vnder the sunne. |
| 8:16 | And so I applied my mynde to learne wysdome, & to knowe the trauayle that is in the worlde (and that of soch a fassyon, that I suffred not myne eyes to slepe nether daye ner nyght) |
| 8:17 | I vnderstode of all the workes of God, but it is not possible for a man, to attayne vnto the workes that are done vnder the Sunne: and though he bestowe his laboure to seke them out, yet can he not reach vnto them: yee though a wyse man wolde vntertake to knowe them, yet shall he not fynde them. |
| 8:1 | n/a |
| 8:2 | I kepe the mouth of the kyng, and the comaundementis and sweryngis of God. |
| 8:3 | Haste thou not to go awei fro his face, and dwelle thou not in yuel werk. For he schal do al thing, that he wole; |
| 8:4 | and his word is ful of power, and no man mai seie to hym, Whi doist thou so? |
| 8:5 | He that kepith the comaundement of God `in this lijf, schal not feele ony thing of yuel; the herte of a wijs man vndurstondith tyme and answer. |
| 8:6 | Tyme and cesoun is to ech werk; and myche turment is of a man, |
| 8:7 | for he knowith not thingis passid, and he mai not knowe bi ony messanger thingis to comynge. |
| 8:8 | It is not in the power of man to forbede the spirit, nethir he hath power in the dai of deth, nethir he is suffrid to haue reste, whanne the batel neiyeth; nethir wickidnesse schal saue a wickid man. |
| 8:9 | I bihelde alle thes thingis, and Y yaf myn herte in alle werkis, that ben don vndur the sunne. Sum tyme a man is lord of a man, to his yuel. |
| 8:10 | Y siy wickid men biryed, which, whanne thei lyueden yit, weren in hooli place; and thei weren preisid in the citee, as men of iust werkis; but also this is vanyte. |
| 8:11 | Forsothe for the sentence is not brouyt forth soone ayens yuele men, the sones of men doon yuels with outen ony drede. |
| 8:12 | Netheles of that, that a synnere doith yuel an hundrid sithis, and is suffrid bi pacience, Y knew that good schal be to men dredynge God, that reuerensen his face. |
| 8:13 | Good be not to the wickid man, nethir hise daies be maad longe; but passe thei as schadewe, that dreden not the face of the Lord. |
| 8:14 | Also another vanyte is, which is don on erthe. Iust men ben, to whiche yuels comen, as if thei diden the werkis of wickid men; and wickid men ben, that ben so sikur, as if thei han the dedis of iust men; but Y deme also this moost veyn. |
| 8:15 | Therfor Y preysid gladnesse, that no good was to a man vndur the sunne, no but to ete, and drynke, and to be ioiful; and that he schulde bere awei with hym silf oneli this of his trauel, in the daies of his lijf, whiche God yaf to hym vndur the sunne. |
| 8:16 | And Y settide myn herte to knowe wisdom, and to vndurstonde the departing, which is turned in erthe. A man is, that bi daies and niytis takith not sleep with iyen. |
| 8:17 | And Y vndurstood, that of alle the werkis of God, a man may fynde no resoun of tho thingis, that ben don vndur the sunne; and in as myche as he traueilith more to seke, bi so myche he schal fynde lesse; yhe, thouy a wijs man seith that he knowith, he schal not mow fynde. |
| 8:1 | where as no man hath wy?dome & vnderstodinge, to geue answere there vnto. Wy?dome maketh a mas face to shyne, but malice putteth it out of fauoure. |
| 8:2 | Kepe the kynges commaundemet (I warne the) & the ooth yt thou hast made vnto God. |
| 8:3 | Be not haistie to go out of his sight, & se thou cotynue in no euell thinge: for what so euer it pleaseth him, yt doeth he. |
| 8:4 | Like as when a kynge geueth a charge, his commaundement is mightie: Euen so who maye saye vnto him: what doest thou? |
| 8:5 | Who so kepeth the commaundement, shall fele no harme: but a wyse mans herte discerneth tyme and maner: |
| 8:6 | For euery thinge wil haue opportunite and iudgment, and this is the thinge that maketh men full of carefulnes & sorowe. |
| 8:7 | And why? a man knoweth not what is for to come, for who wyll tell him? |
| 8:8 | Nether is there eny ma yt hath power ouer ye sprete, to kepe stil ye sprete, ner to haue eny power in the tyme of death: It is not he also that can make an ende of the batayll, nether maye vngodlynes delyuer him yt medleth withall. |
| 8:9 | All these thinges haue I considered, and applied my mynde vnto euery worke that is vnder the Sonne: how one man hath lordshipe vpon another to his owne harme. |
| 8:10 | For I haue oft sene ye vngodly brought to their graues, and fallen downe from the hye and glorious place: in so moch yt they were forgotten in the cite, where they were had in so hye & greate reputacion. This is also a vayne thinge. |
| 8:11 | Because now that euell workes are not haistely punyshed, the hert of man geueth him self ouer vnto wickednesse: |
| 8:12 | But though an euell personne offende an hundreth tymes, and haue a longe life: yet am I sure, that it shal go well with the that feare God, because they haue him before their eyes. |
| 8:13 | Agayne, as for the vngodly, it shall not be well with him, nether shal he prologe his dayes: but euen as a shadowe, so shall he be that feareth not God. |
| 8:14 | Yet is there a vanite vpon earth: There be iust men, vnto whom it happeneth, as though they had the workes of the vngodly: Agayne, there be vngodly, with whom it goeth as though they had the workes of ye rightuous. This me thinke also a vaine thinge. |
| 8:15 | Therfore I commende gladnesse, because a man hath no better thinge vnder the Sonne, then to eate and drynke, and to be mery: for that shal he haue of his laboure all the daies of his life, which God geueth him vnder the Sonne.+ |
| 8:16 | When I applied my mynde to lerne wy?dome, and to knowe the trauayle that is in the worlde (and that of soch a fashion, yt I suffred not myne eyes to slepe nether daye ner night) |
| 8:17 | I vnderstode of all ye workes of God, that it is not possible for a man, to attayne vnto ye workes that are done vnder ye Sonne: and though he bestowe his laboure to seke them out, yet can he not reach vnto the: yee though a wyse man wolde vndertake to knowe them, yet might he not fynde them. |
