| 28:1 | Wo be vnto the crowne of pride, euen to the droncken people of Ephraim whose great pompe is as a flour that fadeth awaye vpon the head of the valleye of such as be in welth, and are ouerladen with wyne. |
| 28:2 | Beholde, ther commeth a vehement and sore daye from the Lorde lyke an vnmeasurable hayle and perellous tempest, euen lyke the force of myghtye and horrible waters, that violentlye beareth downe all thinges. |
| 28:3 | The crowne of the pryde of the dronken Ephraemites shalbe troden vnder fote: |
| 28:4 | so that the floure of hys fayrenes and bewty, which is in the head of the valley of fatnes, shall fade awaye, as doth an vntimely rype fygg afore heruest. Which whan a man spyeth, he loketh vpon it: and whyle it is yet in his hande, he eateth it vp. |
| 28:5 | In the daye shall the Lorde of hostes be the crowne of glory, & diademe of bewtye vnto the residue of his people. |
| 28:6 | He wilbe also a spirite of perfyte knowledge to him that sitteth in iudgement, & strength vnto them that turne awaye the battell to the gate of the enemies. |
| 28:7 | But they are out of the waye by reason of wyne: yee, farre out of the waye are they thorowe strong drynke. The preste also & the prophet are gone astraye by the meanes of strong drincke, they are dronken wt wyne, they go amisse thorowe strong drincke: they fayle in prophecying & stomble in iudgment. |
| 28:8 | For tables are so full of vomyte and fylthines, that no place is cleane. |
| 28:9 | Whom then shall such one teach knowledge? And whom shall he make to vnderstonde the thing that he heareth? For they are as ignoraunt as yong children, that are taken from the mylke and are weened. |
| 28:10 | For they that be such must haue after one lesson, another lesson: after one commaundement, another commaundement, after one rule another rule, after one instruccion another instruccyon, there a lytle and there a lytle. |
| 28:11 | For he that speaketh vnto this people is euen as one that vseth rudenes of spech, and a straunge language. Yf any man saye vnto them: |
| 28:12 | lo, this is the rest wherwith ye maye ease hym that is weerye, thys is the refresshinge, they wyll not herken. |
| 28:13 | Therfore, the worde of the Lorde (lesson vpon lesson, commaundement vpon commaundement, rule vpon rule, instruccyon vpon instruccion, there a lytle and there a lytle) shall be vnto them an occasyon of stombling that they maye go on, and fall backward, be brused, tangled and snared. |
| 28:14 | Wherfore, heare the worde of the Lorde ye mockers, ye that haue rule of this people which is at Ierusalem. |
| 28:15 | Because ye haue sayd: we haue made a couenaunt with death, & with hell are we at agrement. And though there go forth a sore plage, it shall nott come vnto vs. For we haue made falshode our refuge, and vnder vanitie are we hid. |
| 28:16 | Therfore thus sayth the Lorde God: Beholde, I laye in Sion for a foundation a stone, euen a tryed stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: Whoso beleueth, let hym not be to hastye. |
| 28:17 | Iudgment also will I laye to the rule, and righteousnes to the balaunce: so that the hayle shall take awaye your vayne confidence as a broome, and the preuy place of youre refuge shall the waters renne ouer. |
| 28:18 | And thus the couenaunt that ye made wt death, shalbe disanulled: and your agrement that ye made with hell, shall not stand. Yee, when the sore plage goeth forth, ye shalbe troden downe vnder it. From the tyme that it goeth forth, it shall take you awaye. |
| 28:19 | For early in the mornynge euery daye: yee, both daye & night shall it go thorowe: & when the noyse therof is perceaued, it shall gendre vexation. |
| 28:20 | For the bed is narow, and nott large: & the couering so small that a man can not wynde him selfe vnder it. |
| 28:21 | For the Lorde shall stonde as in mount Perazim, and shalbe wrothe lyke as in the valley Gibeon, that he maie do his worke, his straung worke & bring to passe his acte, his straunge acte. |
| 28:22 | Now therfore se that ye be no mockers, lest your punyshment increace: for I haue heard of the Lorde of hostes, that there shall come a short ende vpon the whole earth. |
| 28:23 | Heare ye then, & herken vnto my voyce, considre & pondre my spech. |
| 28:24 | Doth not the husbandman plowe all the daie, and openeth & breaketh the clottes of his grounde, that he maye sowe? |
| 28:25 | Whan he hath made it playn, will he not spred abrode the fitches, and sowe comyn, & cast in whete by measure, & the appoynted barlye and rye in their place? |
| 28:26 | God will instructe hym to haue discretion, euen his God wyll teach hym. |
| 28:27 | For fitches shall not be tresshed with an harowe: nether shall a carte whele be brought thorowe the comyn: but the fitches are beaten out with a stafe, and comyn wt a rodd. |
| 28:28 | But the seede that bread is made of, is tresshed, though it be not alwaye a thresshing. And the carte whele must be brought ouer it, lest he grynde it with his teth. |
| 28:29 | This also commeth of the Lorde of hoostes, which worcketh wt wonderfull wysdome, and bringeth excellent workes to passe. |
| 28:1 | Wo to the coroun of pride, to the drunkun men of Effraym, and to the flour fallynge doun of the glorie of the ful out ioiyng therof, that weren in the cop of the fatteste valei, and erriden of wyn. |
| 28:2 | Lo! the myyti and strong Lord, as the feersnesse of hail, a whirlwynd brekynge togidere, as the fersnesse of many watris flowynge, and sent out on a large lond. |
| 28:3 | The coroun of pride of the drunken men of Effraym schal be defoulid with feet, |
| 28:4 | and the flour of glorie of the ful out ioiyng of hym, that is on the cop of valei of fat thingis, schal be fallyng doun, as a tymeli thing bifore the ripenesse of heruest; which whanne a man seynge biholdith, anoon as he takith with hond, he schal deuoure it. |
| 28:5 | In that dai the Lord of oostis schal be a coroun of glorie, and a garlond of ful out ioiyng, to the residue of his puple; |
| 28:6 | and a spirit of doom to hym that sittith on the trone, and strengthe to hem that turnen ayen fro batel to the yate. |
| 28:7 | But also thei knewen not for wyn, and erriden for drunkenesse; the preest and profete knewen not for drunkenesse; thei weren sopun up of wyn, thei erriden in drunkenesse; thei knewen not a profete, thei knewen not doom. |
| 28:8 | For whi alle bordis weren fillid with spuyng and filthis, so that ther was no more place. |
| 28:9 | Whom schal he teche kunnyng, and whom schal he make to vndurstonde heryng? Men wenyd fro mylk, men drawun awei fro tetis. |
| 28:10 | For whi comaunde thou, comaunde thou ayen; comaunde thou, comaunde thou ayen; abide thou, abide thou ayen; abide thou, abide thou ayen; a litil there, a litil there. |
| 28:11 | For whi in speche of lippe, and in other langage he schal speke to this puple, |
| 28:12 | to which he seide, This is my reste; refreische ye a weri man, and this is my refreischyng; and thei nolden here. |
| 28:13 | And the word of the Lord schal be to hem, Sende thou, sende thou ayen; send thou, sende thou ayen; abide thou, abide thou ayen; abide thou, abide thou ayen; a litil there, a litil there; that thei go, and falle backward, and be al to-brokun, and be snarid, and be takun. |
| 28:14 | For this thing, ye men scorneris, that ben lordis ouer my puple which is in Jerusalem, here the word of the Lord. |
| 28:15 | For ye seiden, We han smyte a boond of pees with deth, and we han maad couenaunt with helle; a scourge flowynge whanne it schal passe, schal not come on vs, for we han set a leesyng oure hope, and we ben kyuered with a leesyng. |
| 28:16 | Therfor the Lord God seith these thingis, Lo! Y schal sende in the foundementis of Sion a corner stoon preciouse, preuyd, foundid in the foundement; he that bileueth, schal not haaste. |
| 28:17 | And Y schal sette doom in weiyte, and riytfulnesse in mesure; and hail schal distrie the hope of leesyng, and watris schulen flowe on proteccioun. And youre boond of pees with deth schal be don awei, |
| 28:18 | and youre couenaunt with helle schal not stonde; whanne the scourge flowynge schal passe, ye schulen be to it in to defoulyng. |
| 28:19 | Whanne euer it schal passe, it schal take awei yow; for whi erli in the grey morewtid it schal passe, in dai and niyt; and oonli trauel aloone schal yyue vndurstondyng to heryng. |
| 28:20 | Forsothe the bed is streit, so that the tother falle doun; and a schort mentil schal not hile euer either. |
| 28:21 | For as in the hil of departyngis the Lord schal stonde, as in the valei, which is in Gabaon, he schal be wroth, that he do his werk; his werk alien, that he worche his werk; his werk is straunge fro hym. |
| 28:22 | And now nyle ye scorne, lest perauenture youre boondis be maad streit togidere; for Y herde of the Lord God of oostis, endyng and abreggyng on al erthe. |
| 28:23 | Perseyue ye with eeris, and here ye my vois; perseyue ye, and here ye my speche. |
| 28:24 | Whether he that erith, schal ere al dai, for to sowe, and schal be kerue, and purge his londe? |
| 28:25 | Whether whanne he hath maad euene the face therof, schal he not sowe gith, and sprenge abrood comyn? and he schal not sette wheete bi ordre, and barli, and mylium, and fetchis in his coostis? |
| 28:26 | And his God schal teche hym, in doom he schal teche hym. |
| 28:27 | Forsothe gith schal not be threischid in sawis, and a wheel of a wayn schal not cumpasse on comyn; but gith schal be betun out with a yerd, and comyn with a staf. |
| 28:28 | Sotheli breed schal be maad lesse, but he that threischith schal not threische it with outen ende, nether schal trauele it with a wheel of a wayn, nether schal make it lesse with hise clees. |
| 28:29 | And this thing yede out of the Lord God of oostis, that he schulde make wondirful councel, and magnefie riytfulnesse. |
| 28:1 | Wo be to ye crowne of pryde, to ye dronke Ephraemites, and to the faydinge floure, to the glory of his pope, yt is vpo the toppe of the pleteous valley: which me be ouerladen wt wyne. |
| 28:2 | Beholde, the strength and power of the LORDE shal breake in to the londe on euery syde, like a tempest of hale, that beareth downe stronge holdes, and like an horrible, mightie and ouer flowinge water. |
| 28:3 | And the proude crowne of the dronken Ephraemites, shal be troden vnderfoote. |
| 28:4 | And as for the faydinge floure, the glory of his pompe, which is vpon the toppe of the plenteous valley: it shal happen vnto him, as to an vntymely frute before the haruest come. Which as soone as it is sene, is by and by deuoured, or euer it come well in a mans honde. |
| 28:5 | And then shal the LORDE of hoostes be a ioyful crowne, and a glorious garlade vnto the remnaunt of his people. |
| 28:6 | Vnto the lowly, he shalbe a sprete of iudgment, and vnto them that dryue awaye the enemies from ye gates, he shalbe a sprete of stregth. |
| 28:7 | But they go wronge by ye reason of wyne, they fall and stacker because of stroge drynke. Yee eue the prestes and prophetes them selues go amisse, they are dronken with wyne, and weake braned thorow stronge drynke. They erre in seinge, and in iudgmet they fayle. |
| 28:8 | For all tables are so ful of vomyte and fylthynes, yt no place is clene. |
| 28:9 | What is he amonge them, yt can teach, instructe or enfourme the childre, which are weened from suck or taken from the brestes: of eny other fashion, then: |
| 28:10 | Commaunde yt maye be commaunded, byd yt maye be bydde, forbyd that maye be forbydde, kepe backe yt maye be kepte backe, here a litle, there a litle. |
| 28:11 | And therfore the LORDE also shal speake wt lispinge lippes and wt a straunge laguage vnto this people, to whom he spake afore of this maner: |
| 28:12 | This shal bringe rest, yf one refresh the weery, ye this shal bringe rest. But they had no will to heare. |
| 28:13 | And therfore the LORDE shal answere their stubbournes (Comaunde yt maye be comaunded, byd yt maye be bydden, forbyd yt maye be forbydde, kepe backe yt maye be kepte backe, here a litle, there a litle) That they maye go forth, fall backwarde, be brussed, snared and taken. |
| 28:14 | Wherfore heare the worde of the LORDE, ye mockers that rule the LORDES people, which is at Ierusale. |
| 28:15 | For ye coforte yor selues thus: Tush, death & we are at a poynte, & as for hell, we haue made a codicion with it: that though there breake out eny sore plage, it shal not come vpon vs. For with disceate wil we escape, and with nymblenes will we defende or selues. |
| 28:16 | Therfore thus saieth the LORDE God: Beholde, I wil laye a stone in Sion, a greate stone, a costly corner stone for a sure foundacion: yt who so putteth his trust in him, shal not be confouded. |
| 28:17 | Rightuousnes wil I set vp agayne in ye balaunce, and iudgment in the weightes. The tepest of hale shal take awaye yor refuge, that ye haue to disceaue withal, and ye ouerflowinge waters shal breake downe yor stroge holdes of dissimulacio. |
| 28:18 | Thus the appoyntmet that ye haue made wt death, shalbe done awaye, and the codicion that ye made with hell, shal not stode. When the greate destructio goeth thorow, it shal all to treade you, It shal take you quyte awaye before it. |
| 28:19 | For it shal go forth early in the mornynge, and contynue only yt daye and yt night. And the very feare only shal teach you, when ye heare it. |
| 28:20 | For ye bedde shalbe so narow yt a ma ca not lye vpon it. And the coueringe to small, that a ma maye not wynde him self therin. |
| 28:21 | For the LORDE shal steppe forth as he dyd vpon the mount Perazim, and shal take on as he dyd vpo the dale of Gabaon: that he maye bringe forth his deuyce, his straunge deuyce: and fulfil his worke, his wonderful worcke. |
| 28:22 | And therfore make no mockes at it, that youre captiuyte increase not: for I haue herde the LORDE of hoostes saye, that there shal come a soden destruction and plage vpon the whole earth. |
| 28:23 | Take hede, and heare my voyce, pondre and merck my wordes wel. |
| 28:24 | Goeth not the husbonde man euer in due season earnestly to his londe? he moweth & ploweth his grounde to sowe. |
| 28:25 | And whe he hath made it playne, he soweth it with fitches or comyn. He soweth ye wheate and Barlye in their place, Milium and Rye also in their place. |
| 28:26 | And yt he maye do it right, his God teacheth him and sheweth him. |
| 28:27 | For he treadeth not the fitches out with a wayne, nether bringeth he the cart here and there ouer the comyn, but he throssheth ye fitches out with a flale, and the comyn with a rod. |
| 28:28 | As for the wheate, he gryndeth it to make bred therof, In as moch as he can not bringe it to passe wt treadinge out. For nether the brussinge that the cart wheles make, ner his beastes can grynde it. |
| 28:29 | This and soch like thinges come of the LORDE of hostes which is maruelous in councel, and greate in rightuousnesse. |
