Isaiah - Chapter: 29

>
29:1Wo vnto the O Ariel Ariel thou citye that Dauid dwelt in Go on from yeare to yeare, and let the lambes be slayne.
29:2I will laye sege vnto Ariel, so that there shalbe heuynes and sorowe in it: and it shalbe vnto me euen an aultar of slaughter.
29:3I wyll besege the round about, and fight agaynst the thorowe a bulworke: and wyll reare vp diches agaynst the.
29:4Thou shalt be brought downe, & shalt speake out of the grounde, and thy spech shall go lowe out of the duste.
29:5Thy voyce also shall come out of the grounde lyke the voyce of a witch: and thy talkyng shall whisper out of the dust. Moreouer, the noyse of thy straunge enemyes shalbe lyke thynne dust, & the multitude of tyrauntes shalbe as drye strawe, that cannot tary: euen sodenly and in hayste shall theyr blast go.
29:6Thou shalt be visited of the Lorde of hostes wt thondre, erthquake, and wt a great noise: with storme and tempest and wt the flame of a consuming fyer.
29:7And the multitude of all nations that fyght agaynst Ariel, shalbe as a dreame sene by night: euen so shall all they be that make warre agaynst it, and stronge holdes to ouercome it, and that laie eny sege vnto it.
29:8In conclusion, it shalbe euen as when an hongry man dreameth that he is eating, and when he awaketh, hys soule is emptye. Or as when a thurstye man dreameth that he is drincking: and when he awaketh, he is yet faynt: and his soule lacketh the appetite. Euen so shalbe the multitude of all nations that fyght agaynst Syon.
29:9Pondre these thynges once in your myndes, & wondre. Blinded are they them selues and the blind guides of other. They are dronken: but not with wyne: they are vnstable, but not thorowe strong drincke.
29:10For the Lorde hath couered you with a slomberinge sprete, and hath closed your eyes. Your prophetes also & rulers that shuld se, them hath he couered.
29:11And the visyon of all the prophetes is become vnto you, as the wordes of a boke that is sealed vp, which men deliuer to one that is learned, saying: Reade thou in it. And he sayth: I cannot, for it is sealed.
29:12And the boke is geuen vnto him that is not learned, saying: Reade thou in it, and he sayth: I am not learned.
29:13Therfore thus hath the Lorde sayde: For somoche as this people when they be in trouble, do honour me with their mouth & wt their lippes: but their hert is far fro me, & the feare which they haue vnto me, proceadeth of a commaundment that is taught of men.
29:14Therfore wyll I do maruayls amonge this people, euen maruelous thinges (I saye) & a wonder. For the wysdome of their wise men shall perysh, & the vnderstanding of their wittye men shall hyd it selfe.
29:15Wo vnto them that kepe secrete their thoughtes, to hyde their councell from the Lorde, and do their workes in darknesse, sayinge: who seeth vs? & who knoweth vs?
29:16Doutles, your destruccion is (in my handes) in reputacyon as the potters claye. And doth the worcke saye of hym that made it, he made not me? And doth an earthen vessell saye of him that fasshyoned it, he had no vnderstandinge?
29:17Is it not hard at hande, that Lybanus shalbe turned into a lowe felde, and that the lowe felde shalbe taken as the wodd?
29:18And in that daye shall deaffe men heare the wordes of the boke, and the eyes of the blinde shall se euen out of the cloud and out of darcknes.
29:19The meke spreted also shalbe mery in the Lorde, and the poore amonge them that be lowly, shall reioyce in the holy one of Israel.
29:20For he that dyd violence, is brought to naught, and the scornefull man is consumed: and they roted out that were hastie so soone to vnryghteousnes,
29:21makynge a man to synne in the worde, and that toke hym in a snare which reproued them in the open place: and they that haue turned the cause of the ryghteous to naught.
29:22Therfore thus sayth the Lorde vnto the house of Iacob, euen thus sayeth he that redemed Abraham: Iacob shall not nowe be confounded, ner his face pale.
29:23But when he seeth hys chyldren the worcke of my handes in the middes of him, they shall sanctifie my name, and prayse the holy Lord of Iacob, and feare the God of Israel.
29:24They also that haue bene of an erronyouse sprete, shall come to vnderstandyng: and they that haue bene scornefull, shall learne doctryne.

 

29:1Wo! Ariel, Ariel, the citee which Dauid ouercam; yeer is addid to yeer, solempnytees ben passyd.
29:2And Y schal cumpasse Ariel, and it schal be soreuful and morenynge; and Jerusalem schal be to me as Ariel.
29:3And Y schal cumpasse as a round trendil in thi cumpasse, and Y schal caste erthe ayens thee, and Y schal sette engynes in to thi bisegyng.
29:4Thou schalt be maad low, thou schalt speke of erthe, and thi speche schal be herd fro the erthe; and thi vois schal be as the vois of a deed man reisid bi coniuring, and thi speche schal ofte grutche of the erthe.
29:5And the multitude of hem that wyndewen thee, schal be as thynne dust; and the multitude of hem that hadden the maistrie ayens thee, schal be as a deed sparcle passynge.
29:6And it schal be sudenli, anoon it schal be visitid of the Lord of oostis, in thundur, and in mouyng of the erthe, and in greet vois of whirlwynd, and of tempest, and of flawme of fier deuowrynge.
29:7And the multitude of alle folkis that fouyten ayens Ariel schal be as the dreem of a nyytis visioun; and alle men that fouyten, and bisegiden, and hadden the maistrie ayens it.
29:8And as an hungry man dremyth, and etith, but whanne he is awakid, his soule is voide; and as a thirsti man dremeth, and drynkith, and after that he is awakid, he is weri, and thirstith yit, and his soule is voide, so schal be the multitude of alle folkis, that fouyten ayens the hil of Sion.
29:9Be ye astonyed, and wondre; wake ye, and douyte ye; be ye drunken, and not of wyn; be ye moued, and not with drunkenesse.
29:10For the Lord hath meddlid to you the spirit of sleep; he schal close youre iyen, and schal hile youre profetis, and princes that sien visiouns.
29:11And the visioun of alle profetis schal be to you as the wordis of a book aseelid; which whanne thei schulen yyue to hym that kan lettris, thei schulen seie, Rede thou this book; and he schal answere, Y may not, for it is aseelid.
29:12And the book schal be youun to him that kan not lettris, and it schal be seid to hym, Rede thou; and he schal answere, Y kan no lettris.
29:13And the Lord seide, For that this puple neiyeth with her mouth, and glorifieth me with her lippis, but her herte is fer fro me; and thei dredden me for the comaundement and techyngis of men, therfor lo!
29:14Y schal adde, that Y make wondryng to this puple, in a greet myracle and wondurful; for whi wisdom schal perische fro wise men therof, and the vndurstondyng of prudent men therof schal be hid.
29:15Wo to you that ben hiye of herte, that ye hide counsel fro the Lord; the werkis of whiche ben in derknessis, and thei seien, Who seeth vs, and who knowith vs?
29:16This thouyt of you is weiward, as if cley thenke ayens a pottere, and the werk seie to his makere, Thou madist not me; and a thing `that is maad, seie to his makere, Thou vndurstondist not.
29:17Whether not yit in a litil time and schort the Liban schal be turned in to Chermel, and Chermel schal be arettid in to the forest?
29:18And in that dai deef men schulen here the wordis of the book, and the iyen of blynde men schulen se fro derknessis and myisty;
29:19and mylde men schulen encreesse gladnesse in the Lord, and pore men schulen make ful out ioie in the hooli of Israel.
29:20For he that hadde the maistrie, failide, and the scornere is endid, and alle thei ben kit doun that walkiden on wickidnesse;
29:21whiche maden men to do synne in word, and disseyueden a repreuere in the yate, and bowiden awey in veyn fro a iust man.
29:22For this thing the Lord, that ayen bouyte Abraham, seith these thingis to the hous of Jacob, Jacob schal not be confoundid now, nether now his cheer schal be aschamed; but whanne he schal se hise sones,
29:23the werkis of myn hondis, halewynge my name in the myddis of hym. And thei schulen halewe the hooli of Jacob, and thei schulen preche God of Israel;
29:24and thei that erren in spirit, schulen knowe vndurstondyng, and idil men schulen lerne the lawe.

 

29:1Wo vnto the o Ariel Ariel, thou cite that Dauid wane. Take yet some yeares, and let some feastes yet passe ouer:
29:2then shal Ariel be beseged, so that she shal be heuy and sorouful, and shal be vnto me euen as a lyon.
29:3For I wil laye sege to the rounde aboute, and kepe ye in with towers, and graue vp dykes agaynst ye.
29:4And thou shalt be brought lowe, and speake out of the earth, and thy wordes shal go humbly out of ye grounde.
29:5Thy voyce shal come out of the earth, like the voyce of a witch, and thy talkinge shal groane out of the myre. For the multitude of thine enemies shalbe like mealdust. And the nombre of Tyrauntes shalbe as ye dust that the wynde taketh awaye sodenly.
29:6Thou shalt be visited of the LORDE of hoostes with thondre, earth quake, and with a greate crack, with the whyrle wynde, tempest, and with the flame of a consumynge fyre.
29:7But now the multitude of all the people, that went out agaynst Ariel: the whole hooste, the stronge holdes, and sege: is like a dreame which apeareth in the night.
29:8It is like as when an hungrie man dreameth that he is eatynge, and when he awaketh, he hath nothinge: like as when a thurstie man dreameth that he is drinkinge, and when he awaketh, he is faynt, and his soule vnpacient. So is the multitude of all people, that mustre them selues agaynst the hill of Sion.
29:9But ye shalbe at youre wittes ende, ye shalbe abasshed: ye shal stackre, and rele to and fro. Ye shalbe dronken, but not of wyne. Ye shal fall, but not thorow dronkenes:
29:10For the LORDE shal geue you an hard slepinge sprete, and holde downe youre eyes: namely yor prophetes and heades which shulde se, them shal he couer.
29:11And all visions shalbe vnto you, as the wordes that stonde in a sealed lettre, when one offreth it to a man that is lerned, and sayeth: rede vs this lettre. The he answereth: I ca not rede it, for it is shutt.
29:12But yf it be geue to one yt is not lerned, or sayde vnto him: rede this lettre: Then sayeth he. I can not rede.
29:13Therfore thus sayeth the LORDE: For so moch as this people draweth nye me wt their mourh, and prayseth me highly with their lippes (where as there herte neuertheles is farre fro me, and the feare which they owe vnto me, that turne they to mens lawes and doctrynes)
29:14therfore wil I also shewe vnto this people, a maruelous terrible and greate thinge (Namely this:) I wil destroye the wisdome of their wise, and the vnderstodinge of their lerned men shal perish.
29:15Wo be vnto them that seke so depe, to hyde their ymaginacion before the LORDE, which rehearce their coucels in ye darknes, and saye: who seith vs, or who knoweth vs?
29:16Which ymaginacion of yours is euen as when the potters claye taketh advisemet, as though the worke might saye to ye worke master: make me not, or as when an erthen vessel saieth of the potter: he vnderstondeth not.
29:17Se ye not that it is hard by, that Libanus shalbe turned in to Charmel, and that Charmel shalbe taken as a wodde?
29:18Then shal deaf men vnderstonde the wordes of the boke, and the eyes of the blynde shal se without eny cloude or darknes.
29:19The oppressed shal holde a mery feast in the LORDE, and the poore people shal reioyse in the holy one of Israel.
29:20Then shal the furious people ceasse, and ye mockers shal be put awaye, and all they yt do wronge shalbe rooted out,
29:21soch as laboure to drawe me vnto synne: and yt disceaue him, which reproueth them in the gate, & soch as turne good personnes to vanite.
29:22And therfore the LORDE (euen the defender of Abraham) saieth thus vnto the house of Iacob: Now shal not Iacob be ashamed, nor his face cofounded,
29:23when he seith amonge his children (whom my hondes haue made) soch as halowe my name amonge them: that they maye sancifie the holy one of Iacob, and feare the God of Israel:
29:24and that they which afore tyme were of an erroneous sprete, haue now vnderstondinge, and yt soch as before coude not speake, are now lerned in my lawe.
