Isaiah - Chapter: 36


36:1	In the .xiiij. yere of king Hezekias came Sennaherib kyng of the Assirians downe, to laye seage vnto all the stronge cityes of Iuda; to conquer them.
36:2	And the kyng of Assiryans sent Rabsakeh from Lachis towarde Ierusalem, agaynst king Hezekias, wt an exceading hoste, which set him by the condyte of the ouerpole in the waye that goeth thorow the fullers lande.
36:3	And so ther came forth vnto him Eliakim Helkias sonne the president Sobna the scribe, and Ioah Asaphs sonne the secretary.
36:4	And Rabsakeh sayde vnto them: Tell Hezekias, that the greate kynge of Assiria sayth thus vnto him: What presumpcion is thys, that thou trustest vnto?
36:5	I sayde, Surely thou trustest in thy lyplaboure, when councell & strength are necessary to battayl: or elles wher to trustest thou, that thou castest thy selfe of frome?
36:6	lo, thou puttest thy trust in a broken staf of rede (I meane Egipt) which he that leaneth vpon, it goeth into his hande & shutteth hym thorowe. Euen so is Pharao the kynge of Egipte, vnto all them that trust in hym.
36:7	But yf thou woldest saye to me: we truste in the Lord our God. A goodly God in dead: whose hye places and aultars Hezekia toke downe, and commaunded Iuda and Ierusalem to worshyp onely before the aultare.
36:8	Nowe therfore delyuer hostages that thou rebelle nomore agaynst my Lorde the kynge of Assirians. And I wyll geue the two thousande horses: yf thou be able to set men vpon them?
36:9	How darest thou resist the power of the smallest prynce, that my Lord hath? how darest thou trust in the charettes and horse men of Egipt?
36:10	Moreouer, thinckest thou that I am come downe hyther to destroye this land wtout the Lordes will? The Lord sayde vnto me: go downe into the lande, that thou mayest destroie it.
36:11	Then sayd Eliakim, Sobna and Ioah vnto Rabsaketh: Speake to vs thy seruauntes (we praye the) in the Siryans language: for we vnderstande it wel. And speake not to vs in the Iewes tong, lest the folcke heare which lyeth vpon the wall.
36:12	Then answered Rabsakeh: Thincke ye, that the kyng sent me to speake this only vnto the Lord and the? Hath he not sent me to them also, that lye vpon the wall? that they maye be compelled to eate their awne donge, & drynck their awne stale wt you?
36:13	And Rabsakeh stode stif, and cryed with a loude voyce in the Iewes tong, and saide: Nowe take hede, howe the great king of the Astyrians geueth you warning.
36:14	Thus sayth the king: Let not Hezekias disceaue you: for he shall not be able to delyuer you.
36:15	Morouer let not Hezekias conforte you in the Lorde, when he sayth: The Lord wtout doubt shall defende vs, and shal not geue ouer this citye into the handes of the kyng of the Assyrians, beleue hym not.
36:16	But thus sayth the kyng of Assyria: opteyne my fauoure, enclyne to me: so maye euery man enioye hys vyneyardes and fygg trees, and drynke the water of his cysterne:
36:17	vnto the tyme that I come my self, and bringe you into a lande that is lyke your awne: wherin is wheate and wyne, which is both sowen with seede, and planted with vyneyardes.
36:18	Let not Hezekia disceaue you, when he sayth vnto you: the Lorde shall delyuer vs? Might the Goddes of the Gentils kepe euery mans lande, from the power of the kynge of the Assirians?
36:19	Where is the God of Hemath and Arphad? Where is the God of Sepharuaim? And who was able to defende Samaria out of my hande?
36:20	Or which of all the Goddes of these landes hath delyuered theyr countrey out of my power? is the lorde in dede able to delyuer Ierusalem fro my hande?
36:21	Unto this Hezekias messaungers helde theyr tonges, and answered not one worde: for the king had charged them, that they shulde geue hym none answere.
36:22	So came Eliakim Helkias sonne the president, Sobna the scribe, and Ioah Asaphs sonne the secretary, vnto Hezekias with rent clothes, and tolde hym the wordes of Rabsaketh.


36:1	And it was don in the fourtenthe yeer of kyng Ezechie, Sennacherib, the kyng of Assiriens, stiede on alle the stronge citees of Juda, and took tho.
36:2	And the kyng of Assiriens sente Rapsases fro Lachis to Jerusalem, to kyng Ezechie, with greet power; and he stood at the watir cundit of the hiyere sisterne, in the weie of the feeld of a fullere.
36:3	And Eliachym, the sone of Elchie, that was on the hous, yede out to hym, and Sobna, the scryuen, and Joae, the sone of Asaph, the chaunceler.
36:4	And Rapsases seide to hem, Seie ye to Ezechie, The greet king, the king of Assiriens, seith these thingis, What is the trist, in which thou tristist?
36:5	ethir bi what councele ether strengthe disposist thou for to rebelle? on whom hast thou trist, for thou hast go awei fro me?
36:6	Lo! thou tristist on this brokun staf of rehed, on Egipt, on which if a man restith, it schal entre in to his hoond, and schal perse it; so doith Farao, the kyng of Egipt, to alle men that tristen in hym.
36:7	That if thou answerist to me, We tristen in oure Lord God; whether it is not he, whose hiye places and auteris Esechie dide awei, and he seide to Juda and to Jerusalem, Ye schulen worschipe bifore this auter?
36:8	And now bitake thee to my lord, the kyng of Assiriens, and Y schal yyue to thee twei thousynde of horsis, and thou maist not yyue of thee stieris of tho horsis.
36:9	And hou schalt thou abide the face of the iuge of o place of the lesse seruauntis of my lord? That if thou tristist in Egipt, and in cartis, and in knyytis;
36:10	and now whethir Y stiede to this lond with out the Lord, that Y schulde distrie it? The Lord seide to me, Stie thou on this lond, and distrie thou it.
36:11	And Eliachym, and Sobna, and Joae, seiden to Rapsaces, Speke thou to thi seruauntis bi the langage of Sirie, for we vndurstonden; speke thou not to vs bi the langage of Jewis in the eeris of the puple, which is on the wal.
36:12	And Rapsaces seide to hem, Whether mi lord sente me to thi lord, and to thee, that Y schulde speke alle these wordis, and not rathere to the men that sitten on the wal, that thei ete her toordis, and drynke the pisse of her feet with you?
36:13	And Rapsaces stood, and criede with greet vois in the langage of Jewis, and seide, Here ye the wordis of the greet kyng, the kyng of Assiriens.
36:14	The kyng seith these thingis, Esechie disseyue not you, for he may not delyuere you;
36:15	and Ezechie yyue not to you trist on the Lord, and seie, The Lord delyuerynge schal delyuere vs; this citee schal not be youun in to the hoond of the kyng of Assiriens.
36:16	Nyle ye here Ezechie. For whi the kyng of Assiriens seith these thingis, Make ye blessyng with me, and go ye out to me; and ete ye ech man his vyner, and ech man his fige tre, and drynke ye ech man the water of his cisterne,
36:17	til Y come, and take awei you to a lond which is as youre lond; to a lond of whete and of wyn, to a lond of looues and of vyneris.
36:18	Ezechie disturble not you, and seie, The Lord schal delyuere vs. Whether the goddis of folkis delyuereden ech his lond fro the hond of the kyng of Assiriens?
36:19	Where is the god of Emath, and of Arphat? Where is the god of Sepharuaym? Whethir thei delyueriden Samarie fro myn hond?
36:20	Who is of alle goddis of these londis, that delyueride his lond fro myn hond, that the Lord delyuere Jerusalem fro myn hond?
36:21	And thei weren stille, and answeriden not to hym a word. For whi the kyng comaundide to hem, and seide, Answere ye not to him.
36:22	And Eliachym, the sone of Elchie, that was on the hous, and Sobna, the scryueyn, and Joae, the sone of Asaph, chaunceler, entriden with to-rent clothis to Ezechie, and telde to hym the wordis of Rapsaces.

36:4	And Rabsaches sayde vnto them: Tel Ezechias, that the greate kinge of Assiria sayeth thus vnto him: What presumpcion is this, that thou trustest vnto?
36:5	Thou thinkest (peradueture) that thou hast councel & power ynough, to mayntene this warre: or els wher to trustest thou, that thou castest thi self of fro me?
36:6	lo, Thou puttest thy trust in a broken staff of rede (I meane Egipte) which he that leaneth vpon, it goeth in to his honde & shuteth him thorow. Euen so is Pharao the kinge of Egipte, vnto all the that trust in him.
36:7	But yf thou woldest saye to me: We trust in ye LORDE oure God: A goodly god, in dede: whose hie places & aulteres Ezechias toke downe, and commaunded Iuda and Ierusalem, to worshipe only before the aulter.
36:8	Abyde the, thou hast made a condicion with my lorde the kinge of the Assirias, that he shulde geue the two thousande horses: Art thou able to set me there vp?
36:9	Seinge now that thou canst not resist the power of the smallest prynce that my LORDE hath, how darrest thou trust in yt charettes and horse men of Egipte?
36:10	Morouer, thinkest thou yt I am come downe hither, to destroye this londe with out the LORDES will? The LORDE sayde vnto me: go downe in to that londe, that thou mayest destroye it.
36:11	Then sayde Eliachim, Sobna & Iohah vnto Rabsaches: Speake to vs thy seruauntes (we praye the) in the Sirians language, for we vnderstonde it well: And speake not to vs in the Iewes tunge, lest the folcke heare, which lieth vpon the wall.
36:12	Then answered Rabsaches: Thinke ye, yt the kinge sent me to speake this only vnto you? Hath he not sent me to the also, that lie vpo the wall? that they be not copelled to eate their owne donge, and drinke their owne stale with you?
36:13	And Rabsaches stode stiff, & cried with a loude voyce in the Iewes tuge, and sayde: Now take hede, how the greate kinge of the Assirias geueth you warnynge.
36:14	Thus saieth the kinge: Let not Ezechias disceaue you, for he shal not be able to delyuer you.
36:15	Morouer, let not Ezechias comforte you in the LORDE, when he saieth: The LORDE with out doute shal defende vs, & shal not geue ouer this cite in to the hondes of the kinge of the Assirias, beleue him not.
36:16	But thus saieth the kinge of Assiria: opteyne my fauoure, enclyne to me: So maye euery ma enioye his vynyardes and fygetrees, and drinke the water of his cisterne:
36:17	vnto the tyme that I come myself, & bringe you in to a londe, yt is like youre owne: wher in is wheat and wyne, which is both sowen with sede, and planted with vynyardes.
36:18	Let not Ezechias disceaue you, when he sayeth vnto you: the LORDE shal delyuer us. Might the goddes of the Gentiles kepe euerymans londe, from the power of the kinge of the Assirians?
36:19	Wher is the God of hemath & Arphad? Where is the God of Sepharnaim? And who was able to defende Samaria out of my honde?
36:20	Or which of all the goddes of the lodes, hath deliuered their countre out of my power, so that the LORDE shulde delyuer Ierusalem fro my honde?
36:21	Vnto this, Ezechias messaungers helde their tunges, and answered not one worde: for the kinge had charged them, that they shulde geue him none answere.
36:22	So came Eliachim Elchias sonne the presidet, Sobna the scrybe, and Ioah Asaphs sonne the Secretary, vnto Ezechias with rente clothes, & tolde him the wordes of Rabsaches.
