>
37:1When Hezekias hearde that, he rent hys clothes, and putt on a sacke cloth, and went into the temple of the Lorde.
37:2But he sente Eliakim the president. Sobna the scribe, with the eldest prestes clothed in sacke, vnto the prophet Esay the sonne of Amoz,
37:3and they said vnto hym: Thus sayth Hezekias: Thys is the daye of trouble, of plage and of blasphemye: for the children are come to the place of byrth: but there is no power to brynge them forth.
37:4The Lorde thy God (no doubte) hath well consydered the wordes of Rabsaketh, whom his Lorde the king of Assirians hath sent to defye & blaspheme the lyuynge God: with soche wordes as the Lorde thy God hath hearde ryght well. And therfore, lyfte vp thy prayer for the remnaunt, that yet are left.
37:5So the seruauntes of the kynge Hezekias came to Esay.
37:6And Esay gaue them thys answere: Saye thus vnto your lorde: thus sayth the Lorde: Be not afraied of the wordes that thou hast hearde wherwith the kyng of the Assirians seruauntes haue blasphemed me.
37:7Beholde, I will cause a wynde to go ouer him, assone as he heareth the rumour, he shall go again into hys contrey: there wyll I destroye hym with the swearde in his awne lande.
37:8Nowe when Rabsakeh returned, he founde the king of Assiria laying sege to Libnas: for he had vnderstande that he was departed from Lachis.
37:9For ther came a rumour that Tharhakas kinge of Ethiopia was come forth to warre agaynst him. And when the king of Assiria heard that, he sent other messaungers to kyng Hezekias wt this commaundement:
37:10Saye thus to Hezekias king of Iuda: Let not thy God disceaue the, in whom thou hopest, and sayest: Ierusalem shall not be geuen into the handes of the king of Assiria.
37:11For lo, thou knowest well howe the kinges of Assiria haue handled all the landes that they haue subuerted, and hopest thou to escape?
37:12Were the people of Gentyles (whom my progenitours conquered) deliuered at any tyme thorow their goddes? As namely, Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the chyldren of Eden, which were at Thalassar.
37:13Where is the kynge of Hemah, and the kyng of Arphad, and the king of the cytie Sepharuaim, Ena & Aua?
37:14Now when Ezekia had receaued the lettre of the messaungers, and read it, he went vp into the house of the Lorde, and opened the letter before the Lorde.
37:15And Ezekia prayed before the Lorde on this maner.
37:16O Lorde of Hostes, thou God of Israel, which dwellest vpon Cherubin. Thou art the God, that onely is God of all the kyngdomes of the worlde, for thou onely hast created heauen and earth.
37:17Enclyne thyne eare Lorde & consydre, open thyne eyes, O Lorde, and se, and pondre all the wordes vpon Sennaherib, which hath sent his embassage to blaspheme the lyuyng God
37:18It is true, O Lorde, that the kynges of Assyria haue conquered all kyngdomes and landes,
37:19and cast theyr goddes in the fyre. Not withstandynge those were no goddes, but the worckes of mens handes, of wood or stone, therfore haue they destroyed them.
37:20Delyuer vs then, O Lorde oure God, from the handes of Sennaherib, that all Kyngdomes of the earth maye knowe, that thou onely art the Lorde.
37:21Then Esaye the sonne of Amoz sent vnto Hezekia, sayinge: Thus sayth the Lorde God of Israel. Where as thou hast made thy prayer vnto me, as touchyng Sennaherib the kynge of Assyria,
37:22this is the answere, that the Lorde hath geuen concernynge hym. Despised art thou, and mocked (O daughter of Syon) he hath shaken his head at the, O daughter of Ierusalem.
37:23But thou Sennaherib. whom hast thou defyed and blasphemed? Agaynst whom hast thou lifted vp thy voyce, and exalted thy proude lookes? euen agaynst the holy one of Israel.
37:24Thou with thy seruauntes hast blasphemed the Lorde, and thus holdest thou of thy selfe. I will couer the hye mountaynes, and sydes of Libanus with my horsmen. And there will I cut downe the hye Cedre trees and the fayrest Fyrre trees. I wyll vp into the heygth of it, and into the chefest of hys tymbre woddes.
37:25If there be no water, I wyll graue and drinke. And as for waters of defence, I shall drye them vp with the fete of myne hoost.
37:26Yee, hast thou not hearde, what I haue taken in hande, & brought to passe of olde tyme? That same wyll I do nowe also: waste, destroye, and brynge stronge cyties vnto heapes of stones.
37:27For theyr inhabitatours shalbe lyke lame men, brought in feare and confounded. They shalbe lyke the grasse & grene herbes in the felde, lyke the hey vpon house toppes, that withereth afore it be growne vp.
37:28I knowe thy wayes, thy goinge forth and thy commynge home, yee, & thy madnesse agaynst me.
37:29Therfore thy furiousnes against me, and thy pryde is come before me. I wyll put my rynge in thy nose, and my brydle byt in the chawes of the, and turne the about, euen the same waye thou camest.
37:30I wyll geue the also this token (O Hezekia) thys yere shalt thou eate such as groweth of yt selfe & the secunde yeare, that which springeth agayne of the same, and in the thyrde yeare, ye shall sowe & reape, yee, ye shall plante vineyardes, and enioye the frutes therof.
37:31And soche of the house of Iuda as are escaped, shall come together, and the remnaunt shall take rote beneth, and bringe forth frute aboue.
37:32For the escaped shall go out of Ierusalem, and the remnaunt from the mounte Syon. And thys shall the gelousy of the Lorde of Hostes bring to passe.
37:33Therfore thus sayeth the Lorde, concernynge the kynge of the Assyrians. He shall not come into this cyte, and shal shote no arowe into it, there shal no shilde hurt it, nether shal they cast ditches about it.
37:34The same waye that he came, he shal retourne, and not come at thys cytie, sayeth the Lorde.
37:35And I wyll kepe and saue the cytie (sayeth he) for myne awne, and for my seruaunte Dauids sake.
37:36Thus the angel went forth, and slewe of the Assyrians hoost, an hundred fourescore and fyue thousande. And when men arose vp early in the mornynge. Beholde, they were slayne, and all laye full of deed bodyes.
37:37So Sennaherib the kyng of the Assyrians brake vp, & dwelt at Niniue.
37:38Afterwarde it chaunsed, as he prayed in the temple of Nesrah his God, that Adramalech and Sarazer hys awne sonnes slewe him with the sweard, and fled into the lande of Armenia. And Asar hadon his sonne raygned in his steade.

37:1And it was don, whanne kyng Ezechie hadde herd, he to-rente hise clothis, and he was wlappid in a sak, and entride in to the hous of the Lord.
37:2And he sente Eliachym, that was on the hous, and Sobna, the scryuen, and the eldre men of prestis, hilid with sackis, to Isaie, the prophete, the sone of Amos.
37:3And thei seiden to hym, Ezechie seith these thingis, A dai of tribulacioun, and of angwisch, and of chastisyng, and of blasfemye is this dai; for children camen `til to childberyng, and vertu of childberyng is not.
37:4Therfor reise thou preier for the relifs that ben foundun, if in ony maner thi Lord God here the wordis of Rapsaces, whom the king of Assiriens, his lord, sente, for to blasfeme lyuynge God, and to dispise bi the wordis, whiche thi Lord God herde.
37:5And the seruauntis of kyng Esechie camen to Isaie;
37:6and Isaie seide to hem, Ye schulen seie these thingis to youre lord, The Lord seith these thingis, Drede thou not of the face of wordis whiche thou herdist, bi whiche the children of the kyng of Assiriens blasfemyden me.
37:7Lo! Y schal yyue to hym a spirit, and he schal here a messanger; and he schal turne ayen to his londe, and Y schal make hym to falle doun bi swerd in his lond.
37:8Forsothe Rapsaces turnede ayen, and foond the kyng of Assiriens fiytynge ayens Lobna; for he hadde herd, that the kyng was gon fro Lachis.
37:9And the kyng herde messangeris seiynge of Theracha, kyng of Ethiopiens, He is gon out to fiyte ayens thee. And whanne he hadde herd this thing, he sente messangeris to Ezechie, and seide, Ye schulen seie,
37:10spekynge these thingis to Ezechye, kyng of Juda, Thi God disseyue not thee, in whom thou tristist, and seist, Jerusalem schal not be youun in to the hond of the kyng of Assiriens.
37:11Lo! thou herdist alle thingis whiche the kynges of Assiriens diden to alle londis whiche thei distrieden; and maist thou be delyuered?
37:12Whethir the goddis of folkis delyuereden hem, whiche my fadris distrieden; Gosan, and Aran, and Reseph, and the sones of Eden, that weren in Thalasar?
37:13Where is the kyng of Emath, and the kyng of Arphath, and the kyng of the citee of Sepharuaym, and of Ana, and of Aua?
37:14And Ezechie took the bookis fro the hond of messangeris, and redde tho; and he stiede in to the hous of the Lord, and spredde abrood tho bifore the Lord;
37:15and preiede to the Lord,
37:16and seide, Lord of oostis, God of Israel, that sittist on cherubyn, thou art God aloone of alle the rewmes of erthe; thou madist heuene and erthe.
37:17Lord, bowe doun thin eere, and here; Lord, open thin iyen, and se; and here thou alle the wordis of Sennacherib, whiche he sente for to blasfeme lyuynge God.
37:18For verili, Lord, the kyngis of Assiriens maden londis dissert, and the cuntreis of tho, and yauen the goddis of tho to fier;
37:19for thei weren not goddis, but the werkis of mennus hondis, trees and stoonys; and thei al to-braken tho goddis.
37:20And now, oure Lord God, saue thou vs fro the hond of hym; and alle rewmes of erthe knowe, that thou art Lord God aloone.
37:21And Isaie, the sone of Amos, sente to Ezechie, and seide, The Lord God of Israel seith these thingis, For whiche thingis thou preidist me of Sennacherib, the kyng of Assiriens,
37:22this is the word which the Lord spak on hym, Thou virgyn, the douyter of Sion, he dispiside thee, he scornede thee; thou virgyn, the douyter of Jerusalem, he moued his heed aftir thee.
37:23Whom despisist thou, and whom blasfemedist thou? and on whom reisidist thou thi vois, and reisidist the hiynesse of thin iyen?
37:24To the hooli of Israel. Bi the hond of thi seruauntis thou dispisidist the Lord, and seidist, In the multitude of my cartis Y stiede on the hiynesses of hillis, on the yockis of Liban; and Y schal kitte doun the hiy thingis of cedris therof, and the chosun beechis therof; and Y schal entre in to the hiynesse of the cop therof, in to the forest of Carmele therof.
37:25Y diggide, and drank watir; and Y made drie with the step of my foot all the strondis of feeldis.
37:26Whether thou, Sennacherib, herdist not what thingis Y dide sum tyme? Fro elde daies Y fourmyde that thing, and now Y haue brouyt; and it is maad in to drawyng vp bi the roote of litle hillis fiytynge togidere, and of strong citees.
37:27The dwelleris of tho citees trembliden togidere with hond maad schort, and ben aschamed; thei ben maad as hei of the feeld, and the gras of lesewe, and as erbe of roouys, that driede vp bifore that it wexide ripe.
37:28Y knew thi dwellyng, and thi goyng out, and thin entryng, and thi woodnesse ayens me.
37:29Whanne thou were wood ayens me, thi pride stiede in to myn eeris; therfor Y schal sette a ryng in thi nosethirlis, and a bridil in thi lippis; and Y schal lede thee ayen in to the weie, bi which thou camest.
37:30Forsothe to thee, Ezechie, this schal be a signe; ete thou in this yeer tho thingis that growen bi her fre wille, and in the secunde yeer ete thou applis; but in the thridde yeer sowe ye, and repe ye, and plaunte ye vyneris, and ete ye the fruyt of tho.
37:31And that that is sauyd of the hous of Juda, and that, that is left, schal sende roote bynethe, and schal make fruyt aboue;
37:32for whi relifs schulen go out of Jerusalem, and saluacioun fro the hil of Sion; the feruent loue of the Lord of oostis schal do this thing.
37:33Therfor the Lord seith these thingis of the kyng of Assiriens, He schal not entre in to this citee, and he schal not schete there an arowe; and a scheeld schal not ocupie it, and he schal not sende erthe in the cumpas therof.
37:34In the weie in which he cam, he schal turne ayen bi it; and he schal not entre in to this citee, seith the Lord.
37:35And Y schal defende this citee, that Y saue it, for me, and for Dauid, my seruaunt.
37:36Forsothe the aungel of the Lord yede out, and killide an hundride thousynde and fourscoor and fyue thousynde in the tentis of Assiriens; and thei risen eerli, and lo! alle men weren careyns of deed men.
37:37And Sennacherib yede out of Jude, and wente awei. And Sennacherib, the kyng of Assiriens, turnede ayen, and dwellide in Nynyue.
37:38And it was don, whanne he worschipide Mesrach, his god, in the temple, Aramalech and Sarasar, hise sones, killiden hym with swerd, and fledden in to the lond of Ararath; and Asaradon, his sone, regnyde for hym.

37:4The LORDE thy God (no doute) hath well considered the wordes of Rabsaches, whom his lorde ye kinge of the Assirians hath sent, to defie & blaspheme the lyuynge God: with soch wordes, as the LORDE yi God hath herde rightwell. And therfore lift vp yi prayer for the remnaunt, that yet are left.
37:5So the seruauntes of kinge Ezechias came to Esay.
37:6And Esay gaue them this answere: Saie thus vnto youre lorde: thus saieth the LORDE: Be not afrayde of the wordes that thou hast herde, wherwith the kinge of Assirias seruauntes haue blasphemed me.
37:7Beholde, I will cause a wynde go ouer him, as soone as he heareth it, he shal go agayne in to his countre, there will I distroye him with the swerde.

37:9For there came a rumoure, yt Taracha kinge of Ethiopia was come forth to warre agaynst him. And when the kinge of Assiria herde yt, he sent other messaungers to kinge Ezechias, with this commaundement.
37:10Saye thus to Ezechias kinge of Iuda: Let not thy God disceaue the, in whom thou hopest, & sayest: Ierusale shal not be geue in to the hondes of the kinge of Assiria.
37:11For thou knowest well, how the kinges of Assiria haue handled all the londes, that they haue subuerted, & hapest thou to escape?
37:12Were the people of the Getiles (whom my progenitours coquered) deliuered at eny tyme thorow their goddes? As namely, Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, & the childre of Eden, which dwell at Thalassar.
37:13Where is the kinge of Hemath, & the kinge of Arphad, & the kinge of the citie Sepharnaim, Ena and Aua?
37:14Now when Ezechias had receaued ye lettre of the messaungers, & red it, he went vp in to the house of the LORDE, & opened the lettre before ye LORDE.
37:15And Ezechias prayed before the LORDE on this maner:
