Isaiah - Chapter: 40


40:1	Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, sayth your God.
40:2	Speake ye comfortably to Ierusalem, and cry vnto her, that her warrefare is accomplished, that her iniquitie is pardoned: for shee hath receiued of the Lords hand double for all her sinnes.
40:3	The voyce of him that cryeth in the wildernesse, Prepare yee the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a high way for our God.
40:4	Euery valley shalbe exalted, and euery mountaine and hill shalbe made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plaine.
40:5	And the glory of the Lord shall be reuealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
40:6	The voyce sayd; Cry. And hee sayd; What shall I cry? All flesh is grasse, and all the goodlinesse thereof is as the flowre of the field.
40:7	The grasse withereth, the flowre fadeth; because the spirit of the Lord bloweth vpon it: surely the people is grasse.
40:8	The grasse withereth, the flowre fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for euer.
40:9	O Zion, that bringest good tydings, get thee vp into the high mountaine: O Ierusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift vp thy voyce with strength, lift it vp, be not afraid: say vnto the cities of Iudah; Behold your God.
40:10	Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, and his arme shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his worke before him.
40:11	He shall feede his flocke like a shepheard: he shall gather the lambes with his arme; and carie them in his bosome, and shall gently lead those that are with yoong.
40:12	Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand? and meted out heauen with the spanne, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountaines in scales, and the hilles in a balance?
40:13	Who hath directed the spirit of the Lord, or, being his counseller, hath taught him?
40:14	With whom tooke he counsell, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of iudgement? and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of vnderstanding?
40:15	Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, hee taketh vp the yles as a very litle thing.
40:16	And Lebanon is not sufficient to burne, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt offring.
40:17	All nations before him are as nothing, and they are counted to him lesse then nothing, and vanitie.
40:18	To whom then will ye liken God? or what likenesse will ye compare vnto him?
40:19	The workeman melteth a grauen image, and the goldsmith spreadeth it ouer with golde, and casteth siluer chaines.
40:20	He that is so impouerished that he hath no oblation, chooseth a tree that will not rot; he seeketh vnto him a cunning workeman, to prepare a grauen image that shall not be mooued.
40:21	Haue yee not knowen? haue yee not heard? hath it not beene tolde you from the beginning? haue yee not vnderstood from the foundations of the earth?
40:22	It is he that sitteth vpon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grashoppers; that stretcheth out the heauens as a curtaine, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwel in:
40:23	That bringeth the princes to nothing; hee maketh the Iudges of the earth as vanitie.
40:24	Yea they shal not be planted, yea they shall not be sowen, yea their stocke shall not take roote in the earth: and he shall also blow vpon them, & they shall wither, and the whirlewinde shall take them away as stubble.
40:25	To whom then will ye liken me, or shal I be equall, saith the Holy One?
40:26	Lift vp your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names, by the greatnesse of his might, for that hee is strong in power, not one faileth.
40:27	Why sayest thou, O Iacob, and speakest O Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my iudgement is passed ouer from my God?
40:28	Hast thou not knowen? hast thou not heard, that the euerlasting God, the Lord, the Creatour of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is wearie? there is no searching of his vnderstanding.
40:29	He giueth power to the faint, and to them that haue no might, he increaseth strength.
40:30	Euen the youths shall faint, and be weary, and the yong men shall vtterly fall.
40:31	But they that waite vpon the Lord, shall renew their strength: they shall mount vp with wings as Eagles, they shal runne and not be weary, and they shall walke, and not faint.

40:7	The grasse withereth, the floure fadeth, because the Spirite of the Lord bloweth vpon it: surely the people is grasse.
40:8	The grasse withereth, the floure fadeth: but the worde of our God shall stand for euer.
40:9	O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee vp into the hie mountaine: O Ierusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift vp thy voyce with strength: lift it vp, be not afraide: say vnto the cities of Iudah, Beholde your God.
40:10	Beholde, the Lord God will come with power, and his arme shall rule for him: beholde, his rewarde is with him, and his worke before him,

40:12	Who hath measured the waters in his fist? and counted heauen with the spanne, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure? and weighed ye mountaines in a weight, and the hilles in a balance?
40:13	Who hath instructed ye Spirit of the Lord? or was his counseler or taught him?
40:14	Of whom tooke he counsell, and who instructed him and taught him in the way of iudgement? or taught him knowledge, and shewed vnto him the way of vnderstanding?

40:21	Know ye nothing? haue ye not heard it? hath it not bene tolde you from the beginning? haue ye not vnderstand it by the foundation of the earth?
40:22	He sitteth vpon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grashoppers, hee stretcheth out ye heauens, as a curtaine, and spreadeth them out, as a tent to dwell in.
40:23	He bringeth the princes to nothing, and maketh the iudges of the earth, as vanitie,
40:24	As though they were not plated, as though they were not sowen, as though their stocke tooke no roote in the earth: for he did euen blow vpon them, and they withered, and the whirlewinde will take them away as stubble.
40:25	To whom nowe will ye liken me, that I should be like him, saith the Holy one?
40:26	Lift vp your eyes on hie, and beholde who hath created these things, and bringeth out their armies by nomber, and calleth them all by names? by the greatnesse of his power and mightie strength nothing faileth.
40:27	Why sayest thou, O Iaakob, and speakest O Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my iudgement is passed ouer of my God?
40:28	Knowest thou not? or hast thou not heard, that the euerlasting God, the Lord hath created the endes of the earth? he neither fainteth, nor is wearie: there is no searching of his vnderstanding.
40:29	But he giueth strength vnto him that fainteth, and vnto him that hath no strength, he encreaseth power.
40:30	Euen the yong men shall faint, and be wearie, and the yong men shall stumble and fall.
40:31	But they that waite vpon the Lord, shall renue their strength: they shall lift vp the wings as the eagles: they shall runne, and not be wearie, and they shall walke and not faint.


40:1	Comforte my people (O ye prophetes) comforte my people, sayeth your God,
40:2	comforte Ierusalem at the hert, & tell her: that her trauayle is at an ende that her offence is pardoned, that she hath receaued of the Lordes hande sufficient correccion for all her synnes.
40:3	A voyce crieth in wildernes. Prepare the waye for the Lorde in the wildernesse, make streyght the path for oure God in the deserte.
40:4	Let all valleyes be exalted, & euery mountayne & hill be layed lowe, what so is croked, let it be made strayght: & let the rough be made playne feldes.
40:5	For the glory of the Lorde shall appeare, and all flesh shall at once se it, for why: the mouth of the Lorde hath spoken it.
40:6	The same voyce spake: Nowe crye. And the prophet answered: what shall I crye? that all fleshe is grasse, & that all the godlines therof, is as the floure of the felde.
40:7	The grasse is wythered, the floure falleth awaye. Euen so is the people as grasse, when the breath of the Lorde bloweth vpon them.
40:8	Neuertheles, whether the grasse wyther, or the floure fade awaye. Yet the word of our God endureth for euer.
40:9	Go vp vnto the hye hyll (O Syon) thou that bringest good tydynges, lyfte vp thy voyce with power, O thou preacher Ierusalem. Lyfte it vp without feare, and saye vnto the cyties of Iuda: Beholde youre God,
40:10	beholde the Lord God shall come with power, and beare rule with his arme. Beholde, he bringeth hys treasure with him, and his worckes go before hym.
40:11	He shall fede his flock lyke an herdman. He shall gather the lambes together with hys arme, and carye them in his bosome, & shall kyndely intreate those that beare yonge.
40:12	Who hath holden the waters in hys fyst? Who hath measured heauen wt his spanne, & hath comprehended all the earth of the worlde in thre measures? Who hath weyed the mountaynes & hylles in a balaunce.
40:13	Who hath refourmed the mynde of the Lorde? or to whom hath he shewed his counsell. Or who is of his councell to teach him?
40:14	or who hath geuen him vnderstandynge and hath taught him the path of iudgement Who taught him conninge and opened to him the waye of vnderstandynge.
40:15	Beholde, all people are in comparyson of hym, as a droppe to a bocket full, & are counted as the lest thinge that the balaunce weyeth. Yee & the Iles he taketh vp as a very lyttel thing.
40:16	Libanus is not sufficient to ministre fyre for hys offeringe, and all the beastes therof are not ynough to one sacrifice.
40:17	All people in comparyson of him are rekened as nothing, yf they be compared with him lesse then nothyng and as it that is not.
40:18	To whom then wyll ye liken God? or what Similitude will ye set vp vnto him?
40:19	Shall the caruer make him a carued ymage? & shall the goldsmyth couer hym with golde, or cast him into a fourme of syluer plates?
40:20	Moreouer, shall the ymage maker (that the poore man which is disposed, maye haue some thing to sett vp also) seke out and chose a tree, that is not roten, & carue therout an ymage, that moueth not?
40:21	Knowe ye nothing o wretches? Hearde ye neuer of it? Hath it not bene preached vnto you sence the begynning? Haue ye not bene enfourmed of this, by the foundacyon of the earthe,
40:22	that he sytteth vpon the circle of the worlde, and that all the inhabitoures of the worlde are in comparyson of him, but as greshopers. That he spredeth out the heauens as a couerynge, that he stretched them out, as a tent to dwell in.
40:23	That he bringeth Princes to nothing, and the iudges of the earth to dust:
40:24	so that of them it may be sayde they be not planted nor sowen agayne, nether their stock roted agayne in the earth? For as soone as he bloweth vpon them, they wither & fade awaye, like the straw in a whyrle winde.
40:25	To whom nowe will ye lyken me, & whom shall I be lyke, sayeth the holy one?
40:26	Lyft vp your eyes on hye, & consydre. who hath made those thinges, which come out by so great heapes? & he can call them all by their names. For there is nothing hid vnto the greatnesse of hys power, strength, & myght.
40:27	Howe may then Iacob thincke, or how may Israel saye: My wayes are hid from the Lorde, & my God knoweth not of my iudgementes.
40:28	Knowest thou not, or hast thou not hearde, that the euerlastynge God, the Lorde which made all the corners of the earth, is nether weery nor faynt? and that his wysdome cannot be comprehended:
40:29	but that he geueth strength vnto the weery, and power vnto the faynte?
40:30	Children are weery and faynt, and the strongest men fall.
40:31	But vnto them that haue the Lord before theyr eyes, shall strength be encreased. Aegles wynges shall growe vpon them. When they runne they shall not fall: and when they go, they shall not be weery.
