Jeremiah - Chapter: 23

>
23:1Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the LORD.
23:2Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the LORD.
23:3And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase.
23:4And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them: and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking, saith the LORD.
23:5Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.
23:6In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
23:7Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that they shall no more say, The LORD liveth, which brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt;
23:8But, The LORD liveth, which brought up and which led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all countries whither I had driven them; and they shall dwell in their own land.
23:9Mine heart within me is broken because of the prophets; all my bones shake; I am like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine hath overcome, because of the LORD, and because of the words of his holiness.
23:10For the land is full of adulterers; for because of swearing the land mourneth; the pleasant places of the wilderness are dried up, and their course is evil, and their force is not right.
23:11For both prophet and priest are profane; yea, in my house have I found their wickedness, saith the LORD.
23:12Wherefore their way shall be unto them as slippery ways in the darkness: they shall be driven on, and fall therein: for I will bring evil upon them, even the year of their visitation, saith the LORD.
23:13And I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria; they prophesied in Baal, and caused my people Israel to err.
23:14I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.
23:15Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts concerning the prophets; Behold, I will feed them with wormwood, and make them drink the water of gall: for from the prophets of Jerusalem is profaneness gone forth into all the land.
23:16Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD.
23:17They say still unto them that despise me, The LORD hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you.
23:18For who hath stood in the counsel of the LORD, and hath perceived and heard his word? who hath marked his word, and heard it?
23:19Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked.
23:20The anger of the LORD shall not return, until he have executed, and till he have performed the thoughts of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly.
23:21I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.
23:22But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings.
23:23Am I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off?
23:24Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.
23:25I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed.
23:26How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart;
23:27Which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal.
23:28The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the LORD.
23:29Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?
23:30Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that steal my words every one from his neighbour.
23:31Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that use their tongues, and say, He saith.
23:32Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD.
23:33And when this people, or the prophet, or a priest, shall ask thee, saying, What is the burden of the LORD? thou shalt then say unto them, What burden? I will even forsake you, saith the LORD.
23:34And as for the prophet, and the priest, and the people, that shall say, The burden of the LORD, I will even punish that man and his house.
23:35Thus shall ye say every one to his neighbour, and every one to his brother, What hath the LORD answered? and, What hath the LORD spoken?
23:36And the burden of the LORD shall ye mention no more: for every man's word shall be his burden; for ye have perverted the words of the living God, of the LORD of hosts our God.
23:37Thus shalt thou say to the prophet, What hath the LORD answered thee? and, What hath the LORD spoken?
23:38But since ye say, The burden of the LORD; therefore thus saith the LORD; Because ye say this word, The burden of the LORD, and I have sent unto you, saying, Ye shall not say, The burden of the LORD;
23:39Therefore, behold, I, even I, will utterly forget you, and I will forsake you, and the city that I gave you and your fathers, and cast you out of my presence:
23:40And I will bring an everlasting reproach upon you, and a perpetual shame, which shall not be forgotten.

23:1Woe be vnto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheepe of my pasture, saith the Lord.
23:2Therefore thus saith the Lord God of Israel vnto the pastors that feede my people, Yee haue scattered my flock and thrust them out, and haue not visited them: beholde, I will visite you for the wickednesse of your works, saith the Lord.
23:3And I will gather the remnant of my sheepe out of all countreyes, whither I had driuen them, and will bring them againe to their foldes, and they shall growe and encrease.
23:4And I will set vp shepheardes ouer them, which shall feede them: and they shall dread no more nor be afraide, neither shall any of them be lacking, saith the Lord.
23:5Behold, The dayes come, saith the Lord, that I will raise vnto Dauid a righteous branche, and a King shall reigne, and prosper, and shall execute iudgement, and iustice in the earth.
23:6In his dayes Iudah shalbe saued, and Israel shall dwell safely, and this is the Name wherby they shall call him, The Lord our righteousnesse.
23:7Therefore behold, the dayes come, sayth the Lord, that they shall no more say, The Lord liueth, which brought vp the children of Israel out of the lande of Egypt,
23:8But the Lord liueth, which brought vp and led the seede of the house of Israel out of the North countrey and from all countryes where I had scattered them, and they shall dwell in their owne lande.
23:9Mine heart breaketh within mee, because of the prophets, all my bones shake: I am like a drunken man (and like a man whome wine hath ouercome) for the presence of the Lord and for his holie wordes.
23:10For the lande is full of adulterers, and because of othes the lande mourneth, the pleasant places of the wildernesse are dried vp, and their course is euill, and their force is not right.
23:11For both the prophet and the Priest doe wickedly: and their wickednesse haue I found in mine House, saith the Lord.
23:12Wherefore their way shalbe vnto them as slipperie wayes in the darknesse: they shalbe driuen foorth and fall therein: for I will bring a plague vpon them, euen the yeere of their visitation, saith the Lord.
23:13And I haue seene foolishnesse in the prophets of Samaria, that prophecied in Baal, and caused my people Israel to erre.
23:14I haue seene also in the prophets of Ierusalem filthines: they commit adulterie and walke in lies: they strengthen also the hands of the wicked that none can returne from his wickednesse: they are all vnto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorah.
23:15Therefore thus saith the Lord of hostes concerning the prophets, Beholde, I will feede them with wormewood, and make them drinke the water of gall: for from the prophets of Ierusalem is wickednesse gone forth into all the lande.
23:16Thus sayth ye Lord of hosts, Heare not the wordes of the prophets that prophecie vnto you, and teach you vanitie: they speake the vision of their owne heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord.
23:17They say still vnto them that despise mee, The Lord hath sayde, Ye shall haue peace: and they say vnto euery one that walketh after the stubbernesse of his owne heart, No euill shall come vpon you.
23:18For who hath stand in the counsel of the Lord that he hath perceiued and heard his word? Who hath marked his worde and heard it?
23:19Beholde, the tempest of the Lord goeth forth in his wrath, and a violent whirlewinde shall fall downe vpon the head of the wicked.
23:20The anger of the Lord shall not returne vntill he haue executed, and till he haue perfourmed the thoughts of his heart: in the latter dayes ye shall vnderstande it plainely.
23:21I haue not sent these prophets, sayth the Lord, yet they ranne; I haue not spoken to them, and yet they prophecied.
23:22But if they had stande in my counsell, and had declared my words to my people, then they should haue turned them from their euill way, and from the wickednesse of their inuentions.
23:23Am I a God at hande, saith the Lord, and not a God farre off?
23:24Can any hide him selfe in secrete places, that I shall not see him, sayth the Lord? Do not I fill heauen and earth, saieth the Lord?
23:25I haue heard what the prophets said, that prophecie lies in my Name, saying, I haue dreamed, I haue dreamed.
23:26Howe long? Doe the prophets delite to prophecie lies, euen prophecying the deceit of their owne heart?
23:27Thinke they to cause my people to forget my Name by their dreames, which they tell euery man to his neyghbour, as their forefathers haue forgotten my Name for Baal?
23:28The prophet that hath a dreame, let him tell a dreame, and hee that hath my worde, let him speake my worde faithfully: what is the chaffe to the wheate, sayth the Lord?
23:29Is not my word euen like a fire, sayeth the Lord? and like an hammer, that breaketh the stone?
23:30Therefore beholde, I will come against the prophets, saieth the Lord, that steale my word euerie one from his neighbour.
23:31Beholde, I will come against the prophets, saith the Lord, which haue sweete tongues, and say, He saith.
23:32Beholde, I will come against them that prophecie false dreames, saith the Lord, and doe tell them, and cause my people to erre by their lies, and by their flatteries, and I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they bring no profite vnto this people, saith the Lord.
23:33And when this people, or the prophet, or a Priest shall aske thee, saying, What is the burden of the Lord? thou shalt then say vnto them, What burden? I will euen forsake you, saith the Lord.
23:34And the prophet, or the Priest, or the people that shall say, The burden of the Lord, I will euen visite euerie such one, and his house.
23:35Thus shall yee say euery one to his neighbour, and euerie one to his brother, What hath the Lord answered? and what hath the Lord spoken?
23:36And the burden of the Lord shall yee mention no more: for euery mans worde shall bee his burden: for ye haue peruerted the words of the liuing God, the Lord of hostes our God.
23:37Thus shalt thou say to the Prophet, What hath the Lord answered thee? and what hath the Lord spoken?
23:38And if you say, The burden of the Lord, Then thus saith the Lord, Because yee say this word, The burden of the Lord, and I haue sent vnto you, saying, Ye shall not say, The burden of the Lord,
23:39Therefore beholde, I, euen I will vtterly forget you, and I will forsake you, and the citie that I gaue you and your fathers, and cast you out of my presence,
23:40And will bring an euerlasting reproche vpon you, and a perpetual shame which shall neuer be forgotten.

23:1Wo be vnto the shepherdes, that destroye, and scatre my flocke, sayeth the Lorde.
23:2Wherfore this is the commaundement of the Lorde God of Israel, vnto the shepeherdes that fede my people: Ye scatre & thrust out my flocke, & loke not vpon them. Therfore now wyll I vyset the wickednes of youre ymagynacions, sayeth the Lorde.
23:3And wyll gather together the remnaunt of my flocke, from all landes that I had dryuen them vnto, and will brynge them agayne to their pastures, that they maye growe and increase.
23:4I wyll set shepherdes also ouer them, which shall fede them. They shall nomore feare and drede, for there shall none of them be lost, saieth the Lorde.
23:5Beholde, the tyme commeth, sayeth the Lorde, that I wyll rayse vp the ryghteous braunche of Dauid, which kynge shall beare rule, and he shall prosper with wysedome, & shall set vp equite & righteousnes agayne in the erth.
23:6In this tyme shall Iuda be saued, and Israell shall dwell without feare. And this is the name that they shal call him: euen the Lorde oure ryghteousnesse.
23:7And therfore beholde, the tyme commeth, sayeth the Lorde that it shall nomore be sayde: the Lorde lyueth, which brought the chyldren of Israell out of the lande of Egypte:
23:8But the Lorde lyueth, which brought forth, and led the sede of the house of Israel, out of the North lande, and from all countrees where I had scatred them, and they shall dwell in their awne lande agayne.
23:9My herte breaketh in my body because of the false prophetes, al my bones shake: I am become lyke a droncken man (that by the reason of wyne can take no rest) for verye feare of the Lorde, and of his holy wordes:
23:10Because the lande is full of aduouterers & thorowe swering it mourneth & the pleasaunt pastures of the deserte are dryed vp. Yee, the waye that men take, is wicked, and theyr gouernaunce is nothinge lyke the holy worde of the Lorde.
23:11For prophetes and the prestes them selues are polluted ypocrites, and theyr wyckednes haue I founde in my house, saieth the Lorde.
23:12Wherfore, their way shall be slyppery in the darcknesse, where in they maye stacker & fall. For I wyll bryng a plage vpon them, euen the yeare of theyr visitacion saieth the Lorde.
23:13I haue sene foly amonge the Prophetes of Samaria, that they preached for Baall, and disceaued my people of Israell.
23:14I haue sene also amonge the Prophetes of Ierusalem foule aduoutry, and presumpteous lyes. They take the most shamefull men by the hande, flattringe them, so that they cannot returne from theyr wyckednes. All these wt their cytesyns are vnto me, as Sodome, and as the inhabitours of Gomorre.
23:15Therfore thus sayeth the Lorde of Hostes concernynge the prophetes: Beholde, I will fede them with wormwod, and make them drincke the water of gall. For from the prophetes of Ierusalem is ypocrisye come into all the lande.
23:16And therfore the Lorde of Hostes geueth you this warninge. Heare not the wordes of the prophetes, that preach vnto you, and disceaue you: surely they teache you vanyte for they speake the meanynge of their awne herte, & not out of the mouth of the Lorde.
23:17They saye vnto them that despyse me: The Lorde hath spoken it: Tush: ye shal prospere ryght well. And vnto all them, that walcke after the lust of theyr awne hert, they saye: Tush, there shall no misfortune happen you.
23:18For who hath sytten in the councell of the Lorde, that he hath herde & vnderstande, what he is aboute to do: Who hath marcked hys deuyce, and herde it?
23:19Beholde, the stormy wether of the Lorde (that is, his indignacion) shall go forth, and a vyolent whirlwynde shall fal downe vpon the heade of the vngodly.
23:20And the wrath of the Lorde shall not turne agayne, vntyll he perfourme and fulfyl the thought of hys herte. And in the latter dayes ye shall knowe his meanynge.
23:21I haue not sent these prophetes (saieth the Lorde) & yet they ranne. I haue not spoken to them, and yet they preached.
23:22But yf they had continued in my councell they had opened to my people my wordes & they had turned my people from their euell wayes & wycked ymagynacions.
23:23Am I then God that seyth but the thinge, whiche is nye at hande, and not that is farre of? sayeth the Lorde.
23:24Maye eny man hyde hym self so, that I shall not se hym? sayeth the Lorde. Do not I fulfyll heauen and earth? sayeth the Lorde.
23:25I haue herde well ynough, what the prophetes saye that preache lyes in my name, sayeng: I haue dreamed, I haue dreamed.
23:26How longe wyll this continue in the prophetes hert to tell lyes, and to preache the crafty sotylte of their awne hert?
23:27Whose purpose is (with the dreames that euery one tell) to make my people forget my name, as theyr forefathers dyd, when Baall came vp.
23:28The prophet that hath a dreame let hym tell it and he that vnderstandeth my worde, let hym shewe it faythfully. For what hath chaffe and wheate to do together? sayeth the Lorde.
23:29Is not my worde lyke a fyre, sayeth the Lorde, and Lyke an hammer, that breaketh the harde stone.
23:30Therfore thus sayeth the Lorde: beholde, I wyll vpon the prophetes, that steale my worde priuely from euery man:
23:31Beholde, here am I (sayeth the Lorde) agaynst the prophetes, that make tunges tender to speake, & saye: The Lorde hath sayde it.
23:32Beholde, here am I (sayeth the Lorde) agaynst those prophetes, that darre prophecy lyenge dreames, and disceaue my people with their vanyties, and myracles, whom I neuer sent, ner commaunded them. They shall do this people greate harme, sayeth the Lorde.
23:33Yf this people, ether eny prophet or preste aske the and saye: what is the burthen of the Lorde? Thou shalt saye vnto them: what burthen? Therfore wyll I cast you fro me, (sayeth the Lorde) because ye your selues a
23:34And the prophet, preste or people that vseth this terme (the burthen of the Lorde) hym wyll I viset, and his house also.
23:35But thus shall ye saye, euery one to another, & euery man to his brother. What answere hath the Lord geuen? or what is the Lordes commaundement?
23:36And as for the burthen of the Lorde, ye shal speake nomore of it: for euery mans awne worde is his burthen because ye haue altered the wordes of the lyuynge God the Lorde of Hostes our God.
23:37Thus shall euery man saye to the Prophetes: what answere hath the Lorde geuen the? Or, what sayth the Lorde?
23:38And not once to name the burthen of the Lorde. Therfore thus saieth the Lorde. For so moche as ye haue vsed thys terme (the burthen of the Lorde) where as I notwithstandynge sent vnto you, and forbade you to speake of the Lordes burthen.
23:39Beholde therfore, I wyll repute you as a burthen, and will cast you out of my presence: yee, and the citie also, that I gaue you and your fathers:
23:40and will bryng you to an euerlastinge confusion, and into soch a shame, as shall neuer be forgotten.
