Jeremiah - Chapter: 38

>
38:1Saphatiah the sonne of Mathan, Godoliah the sonne of Phasphur, Iucal the sonne of Semeliah, and Phashur the sonne of Melchiah perceaued the wordes, that Ieremy had spoken vnto all the people, namely on thys maner:
38:2Thus sayeth the Lord: Who so remayneth in thys cytie, shal perish, ether with the swearde, with honger or with the pestylence. But who so falleth vnto the Caldees, shall escape winnynge his soule for a praye, & shall lyue.
38:3For thus sayeth the Lorde: Thys cytie (no doute) must be delyuered into the power of the kynge of Babylon, and he also shall wynne it.
38:4Then sayde the prynces vnto the kynge: Syr, we beseche you let thys man be put to death. For thus he discorageth the handes of the soudiers that be in thys cytie, and the handes of all the people, when he speaketh soche wordes vnto them. This man verely laboureth not for peace of the people, but myschefe.
38:5Zedekiah the kynge answered & sayde: lo, he is in youre handes, for the kyng maye denye you nothinge.
38:6Then toke they Ieremy, and cast hym into the dongeon of Melchiah the sonne of Hamelech, that dwelt in the fore entrie of the preson. And they lett downe Ieremy with coardes into a dongeon, where there was no water, but myre.
38:7So Ieremy stack fast in the myre. Now when Abedmelech the Morian beynge a chamberlayne in the kynges courte, vnderstode, that they had cast Ieremy into the dongeon:
38:8he went out of the kynges house, and spake to the kynge, (which then sat vnder the porte of BenIamin) these wordes:
38:9My Lorde the kynge, where as these men medle with Ieremye the prophet, they do hym wronge: Namely, in that they haue put him in preson, there to dye of honger, for there is no more bread in the cytie.
38:10Then the kynge commaunded Abedmelech the Morian and sayde: Take from hence .xxx. men whom thou wylt, & drawe vp Ieremy the prophet out of the dongeon, before he dye.
38:11So Abedmelech toke the men wt him, and went to the house of the kynge, and there vnder the treasurie gatt olde ragges & worne cloutes, and lett them downe by a coarde, into the dongeon to Ieremy.
38:12And Abedmelech the Morian sayde vnto the prophet Ieremy: O, put these ragges and cloutes vnder thyne arme holes, betwyxte them and the coardes: & Ieremy dyd so.
38:13So they drewe vp Ieremy with coardes & toke him out of the dongeon, & he remayned in the fore entrye of the preson.
38:14Then Zedekiah the kynge sent & caused Ieremy the prophete to be called vnto him, into the thyrde entrye, that is in the house of the. Lord. And the kinge sayd vnto Ieremy: I will aske the somewhat but hyde nothynge fro me.
38:15Then Ieremy answered Zedekiah: Yf I be playne vnto the, thou wilt cause me to suffre death: If I geue the councell, thou wylt not folowe me.
38:16So the king swore an ooth secretly vnto Ieremy, sayinge. As truly as the Lorde lyueth that made vs these soules, I wyll not slaye the, ner geue the into the handes of them that seke after thy lyfe.
38:17Then sayde Ieremy vnto Zedekiah. Thus sayeth the Lord of hoostes the God of Israel If case be, that thou wylt go forth vnto the kynge of Babylons prynces, thou shalt saue thy lyfe, and thys cytie shalt not be brent yee, both thou and thy housholde shall escape with youre lyues.
38:18But yf thou wylt not go forth to the kynge of Babylons princes, then shall thys cytie be delyuered into the handes of the Caldees, which shall set fyre vpon it, and thou shalt not be able to escape them.
38:19And Zedekiah sayde vnto Ieremy. I am afrayde for the Iewes, that are fled vnto the Caldees, lest I come in theyr handes, and so they to haue me in derisyon.
38:20But Ieremy answerde: No, they shall not betraye the: O herken vnto the voyce of the Lord (I beseche the) which I speake vnto the so shalt thou be well, and saue thy lyfe.
38:21But yf thou wilt not go forth, the Lorde hath tolde me this playnely:
38:22Beholde, all the wemen that are left in the kynge of Iudaes house, shalbe led forth out to the kynge of Babilons princes. And they shal saye, that thou art disceaued: and that they whom thou didest put thy trust, haue gotten the vnder, & sett thy fete fast in the myre, and gone their waye from the.
38:23Therfore all thy wyues with their chyldren shall they leade forth vnto the Caldees, and thou shalt not escape their handes, but shalt be the kyng of Babilons presoner, & this cytie shalt thou cause to be brent.
38:24Then sayde Zedekiah vnto Ieremye: loke that no body knowe of these wordes, and thou shalt not dye.
38:25But yf the princes perceaue, that I haue talked with the and come vnto the, saying: O speake, what sayde the king to the? hyde it not from vs, & we wyll not put the to death. Tell vs (we praye the) what sayde the kynge to the?
38:26Se thou geue them thys answere: I haue humbly besought the kynge, that he wyll lett me lye nomore in Iehonathans house, that I dye not there.
38:27Then came all the princes vnto Ieremy, and asked hym. And he tolde them, after the maner as the kynge bad him. Then they helde theyr peace, and let hym alone for they perceaued nothinge.
38:28So Ieremy abode styll in the fore entrie of the preson, vntyll the daye that Ierusalem was wonne.

38:1Forsothe Safacie, sone of Nathan, and Jedelie, sone of Fassur, and Jothal, sone of Selemye, and Fassour, sone of Melchie, herden the wordis whiche Jeremye spak to al the puple,

38:3The Lord seith these thingis, This citee to be bitakun schal be bitakun in to the hond of the oost of the kyng of Babiloyne, and he schal take it.
38:4And the princes seiden to the kyng, We preien, that this man be slayn; for of bifore castyng he discoumfortith the hondis of men werriours, that dwelliden in this citee, and the hondis of al the puple, and spekith to hem bi alle these wordis. For whi this man sekith not pees to this puple, but yuel.
38:5And kyng Sedechie seide, Lo! he is in youre hondis, for it is not leueful that the kyng denye ony thing to you.
38:6Therfor thei token Jeremye, and castiden hym doun in to the lake of Elchie, sone of Amalech, which was in the porche of the prisoun; and thei senten doun Jeremye bi cordis in to the lake, wherynne was no watir, but fen; therfor Jeremye yede doun in to the filthe.
38:7Forsothe Abdemalech Ethiopien, a chast man and oneste, herde, that was in the kyngis hous, that thei hadden sent Jeremye in to the lake; sotheli the king sat in the yate of Beniamyn.

38:9and seide, My lord the kyng, these men diden yuele alle thingis, what euer thingis thei diden ayens Jeremye, the profete, sendynge hym in to the lake, that he die there for hungur; for whi looues ben no more in the citee.
38:10Therfor the kyng comaundide to Abdemelech Ethiopien, and seide, Take with thee thretti men fro hennus, and reise thou Jeremye, the profete, fro the lake, bifor that he die.
38:11Therfor whanne Abdemelech hadde take men with hym, he entride in to the hous of the kyng, that was vndur the celer; and he took fro thennus elde clothis, and elde ragges, that weren rotun; and he sente tho doun to Jeremye, in to the lake, bi cordis.
38:12And Abdemelech Ethiopien seide to Jeremye, Putte thou elde clothis, and these to-rent and rotun thingis vndur the cubit of thin hondis, and on the cordis. Therfor Jeremye dide so.
38:13And thei drowen out Jeremye with cordis, and ledden hym out of the lake. Forsothe Jeremye dwellide in the porche of the prisoun.
38:14And kyng Sedechie sente, and took hym Jeremye, the profete, at the thridde dore that was in the hous of the Lord. And the kyng seide to Jeremye, Y axe of thee a word; hide thou not ony thing fro me.
38:15Forsothe Jeremye seide to Sedechie, If Y telle to thee, whether thou schalt not sle me? And if Y yyue councel to thee, thou schalt not here me.
38:16Therfor Sedechie the king swoor to Jeremye priueli, and seide, The Lord lyueth, that maad to vs this soule, Y schal not sle thee, and Y schal not bitake thee in to the hondis of these men, that seken thi lijf.
38:17And Jeremye seide to Sedechie, The Lord of oostis, God of Israel, seith these thingis, If thou goest forth, and goest out to the princes of the kyng of Babiloyne, thi soule schal lyue, and this citee schal not be brent with fier, and thou schalt be saaf, thou and thin hous.
38:18Forsothe if thou goest not out to the princes of the kyng of Babiloyne, this citee schal be bitakun in to the hondis of Caldeis; and thei schulen brenne it with fier, and thou schalt not ascape fro the hond of hem.
38:19And kyng Sedechie seide to Jeremye, Y am angwischid for the Jewis that fledden ouer to Caldeis, lest perauenture Y be bitakun in to the hondis of hem, and thei scorne me.
38:20Forsothe Jeremye answeride, and seide to hym, Thei schulen not bitake thee; Y biseche, here thou the vois of the Lord, which Y schal speke to thee, and it schal be wel to thee, and thi soule schal lyue.
38:21That if thou wolt not go out, this is the word which the Lord schewide to me, Lo!

38:25Sotheli if the princes heren, that Y spak with thee, and comen to thee, and seien to thee, Schewe thou to vs what thou spakest with the kyng, hide thou not fro vs, and we schulen not sle thee; and what the kyng spak with thee,
38:26thou schalt seie to hem, Knelyngli Y puttide forth my preiris bifore the kyng, that he schulde not comaunde me to be led ayen in to the hous of Jonathan, and Y schulde die there.
38:27Therfor alle the princes camen to Jeremye, and axiden hym; and he spak to hem bi alle the wordis whiche the kyng hadde comaundid to hym, and thei ceessiden fro hym; for whi no thing was herd.

38:3For thus saieth the LORDE This cite (no doute) must be delyuered into ye power of the kige of Babilo, & he also shal wynne it.
38:4The sayde the prynces vnto ye kynge: Syr, we besech you let this man be put to death, For thus he discorageth the hodes of the soudyers yt be in this cite, & the hodes of all the people, whe he speaketh soch wordes vnto the. This ma verely laboureth not for peace of ye people, but mischefe.
38:5Sedechias the kinge answered and sayde: lo, he is in yor hodes, for ye kige maye denye you nothinge.
38:6Then toke they Ieremy, and cast him in to the dongeon off Malchias the sonne off Amalech, that dwelt in the fore entre off the preson. And they let downe Ieremy wt coardes in to a dongeon, where there was no water, but myre.
38:7So Ieremy stack fast in the myre. Now when Abdemelech the Morian beynge a chamberlayne in the kynges courte, vnderstode, that they had cast Ieremy in to the dongeon:
38:8he went out off the kynges house, and spake to the kynge (which the sat vnder the porte off Ben Iamin) these wordes:
38:9My lorde the kynge, where as these men medle with Ieremy the prophet, they do him wronge: Namely, in that they haue put him in preson, there to dye of honger, for there is no more bred in the cite.
38:10The the kynge commauded Abdemelech the Morian, and sayde: Take from hece xxx. men whom thou wilt, & drawe vp Ieremy the prophet out of the dongeon, before he dye.
38:11So Abdemelech toke the men wt him, & went to ye house of Amalech, & there vnder an almery he gat olde ragges & worne cloutes, & let the downe by a coarde, in to the dongeon to Ieremy.
38:12And Abdemelech the Morian sayde vnto the prophet Ieremy: O put these ragges and cloutes vnder thine arme holes, betwixte the and the coardes: ad Ieremy dyd so.
38:13So they drewe vp Ieremy with coardes and toke him out of the dongeon, and he remayned in the fore entrie of the preson.
38:14The Sedechias the kynge sent and caused Ieremy the prophet be called vnto him, in to the thirde entrie, that was by the house off the LORDE. And the kynge sayde vnto Ieremy: I wil axe the somwhat, but hyde nothinge fro me.
38:15The Ieremy answerde Sedechias: Yf I be playne vnto the, thou wilt cause me suffre death: yf I geue the coucell, thou wilt not folowe me.

38:17Then sayde Ieremy vnto Sedechias: Thus saieth ye LORDE off hoostes the God of Israel: Yf case be, that thou wilt go forth vnto the kynge off Babilons prynces, thou shalt saue thy life, and this cite shall not be bret, yee both thou and thy housholde shall escape with youre lyues.
38:18But yff thou wilt not go forth to the kynge off Babilons prynces, then shal this cite be delyuered in to the hondes of the Caldees which shal set fyre vpon it, and thou shalt be able to escape them.
38:19And Sedechias sayde vnto Ieremy: I am afrayde for the Iewes, that are fled vnto the Caldees, lest I come in their hodes, and so they to haue me in derision.
38:20But Ieremy answerde: No, they shal not betraye the: O herken vnto the voyce off the LORDE (I beseke ye) which I speake vnto the, so shalt thou be well, and saue thy life.
38:21But yf thou wilt not go forth, the LORDE hath tolde me this planely:
38:22Beholde, all the women that are left in the kynge of Iudaes house, shal go out to the kynge of Babilons prynces. For they thynke, yt thou art disceaued: and that ye men in whom thou didest put thy trust, haue gotten the vnder, and set thy fete fast in the myre, and gone their waye from the.
38:23Therfore all thy wyues with their children shall fle vnto the Caldees, and thou shalt not escape their hondes, but shalt be ye kynge of Babilons presoner, & this cite shall be brent.
38:24Then sayde Sedechias vnto Ieremy: loke yt no body knowe off these wordes, and thou shalt not dye.
38:25But yf the prynces perceaue, that I haue talked with the, and come vnto the, sayenge: O speake, what sayde the kynge to the? hyde it not from vs, and we wil not put the to death. Tell vs (we praye the) what sayde ye kynge to the?
