Jeremiah - Chapter: 44

>
44:1The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews which dwell in the land of Egypt, which dwell at Migdol, and at Tahpanhes, and at Noph, and in the country of Pathros, saying,
44:2Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Ye have seen all the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, and upon all the cities of Judah; and, behold, this day they are a desolation, and no man dwelleth therein,
44:3Because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn incense, and to serve other gods, whom they knew not, neither they, ye, nor your fathers.
44:4Howbeit I sent unto you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, Oh, do not this abominable thing that I hate.
44:5But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense unto other gods.
44:6Wherefore my fury and mine anger was poured forth, and was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they are wasted and desolate, as at this day.
44:7Therefore now thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; Wherefore commit ye this great evil against your souls, to cut off from you man and woman, child and suckling, out of Judah, to leave you none to remain;
44:8In that ye provoke me unto wrath with the works of your hands, burning incense unto other gods in the land of Egypt, whither ye be gone to dwell, that ye might cut yourselves off, and that ye might be a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?
44:9Have ye forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, and the wickedness of the kings of Judah, and the wickedness of their wives, and your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives, which they have committed in the land of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem?
44:10They are not humbled even unto this day, neither have they feared, nor walked in my law, nor in my statutes, that I set before you and before your fathers.
44:11Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will set my face against you for evil, and to cut off all Judah.
44:12And I will take the remnant of Judah, that have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, and they shall all be consumed, and fall in the land of Egypt; they shall even be consumed by the sword and by the famine: they shall die, from the least even unto the greatest, by the sword and by the famine: and they shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach.
44:13For I will punish them that dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence:
44:14So that none of the remnant of Judah, which are gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, shall escape or remain, that they should return into the land of Judah, to the which they have a desire to return to dwell there: for none shall return but such as shall escape.
44:15Then all the men which knew that their wives had burned incense unto other gods, and all the women that stood by, a great multitude, even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying,
44:16As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the LORD, we will not hearken unto thee.
44:17But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.
44:18But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.
44:19And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings unto her, without our men?
44:20Then Jeremiah said unto all the people, to the men, and to the women, and to all the people which had given him that answer, saying,
44:21The incense that ye burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, ye, and your fathers, your kings, and your princes, and the people of the land, did not the LORD remember them, and came it not into his mind?
44:22So that the LORD could no longer bear, because of the evil of your doings, and because of the abominations which ye have committed; therefore is your land a desolation, and an astonishment, and a curse, without an inhabitant, as at this day.
44:23Because ye have burned incense, and because ye have sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his testimonies; therefore this evil is happened unto you, as at this day.
44:24Moreover Jeremiah said unto all the people, and to all the women, Hear the word of the LORD, all Judah that are in the land of Egypt:
44:25Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying; Ye and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and fulfilled with your hand, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her: ye will surely accomplish your vows, and surely perform your vows.
44:26Therefore hear ye the word of the LORD, all Judah that dwell in the land of Egypt; Behold, I have sworn by my great name, saith the LORD, that my name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, The Lord GOD liveth.
44:27Behold, I will watch over them for evil, and not for good: and all the men of Judah that are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until there be an end of them.
44:28Yet a small number that escape the sword shall return out of the land of Egypt into the land of Judah, and all the remnant of Judah, that are gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, shall know whose words shall stand, mine, or theirs.
44:29And this shall be a sign unto you, saith the LORD, that I will punish you in this place, that ye may know that my words shall surely stand against you for evil:
44:30Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give Pharaohhophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies, and into the hand of them that seek his life; as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, his enemy, and that sought his life.

44:1The word that was maad to Jeremye, and to alle the Jewis, that dwelliden in the lond of Egipt, dwellinge in Magdalo, and in Taphnys, and in Memphis, and in the lond of Phatures,
44:2and seide, The Lord of oostis, God of Israel, seith these thingis, Ye sien al this yuel, which Y brouyte on Jerusalem, and on alle the citees of Juda; and lo! tho ben forsakun to dai, and no dwellere is in tho;
44:3for the malice which thei diden, to terre me to wrathfulnesse, and that thei yeden, and maden sacrifice, and worschipiden alien goddis, whiche thei knewen not, bothe ye, and thei, and youre fadris.
44:4And Y sente to you alle my seruauntis profetis; and Y roos bi nyyte, and sente, and seide, Nyle ye do the word of sich abhomynacioun.
44:5And thei herden not, nether bowiden doun her eere, that thei schulen be conuertid fro her yuels, and schulden not make sacrifice to alien goddis.
44:6And myn indignacioun and my strong veniaunce is wellid togidere, and is kindlid in the citees of Juda, and in the stretis of Jerusalem; and tho ben turned in to wildirnesse, and wastnesse, bi this dai.
44:7And now the Lord of oostis, God of Israel, seith these thingis, Whi doon ye this greet yuel ayens youre soulis, that a man of you perische and a womman a litil child and soukynge perische, fro the myddis of Juda, nether ony residue thing be left in you,
44:8that terre me to wraththe bi the werkis of youre hondis, in makynge sacrifice to alien goddis in the lond of Egipt, in to which ye entriden, that ye dwelle there, and that ye perische, and be in to cursyng, and in to schenschipe to alle the folkis of erthe?
44:9Whether ye han foryete the yuels of youre fadris, and the yuels of the kingis of Juda, and the yuels of her wiues, and youre yuels, and the yuels of youre wyues, whiche thei diden in the lond of Juda, and in the cuntreis of Jerusalem?
44:10Thei ben not clensid `til to this dai, and thei dredden not, and thei yeden not in the lawe of the Lord, and in myn heestis, whiche Y yaf bifore you, and bifore youre fadris.
44:11Therfor the Lord of oostis, God of Israel, seith these thingis, Lo! Y schal sette my face in you in to yuel,
44:12and Y schal leese al Juda, and Y schal take the remenauntis of Juda, that settiden her faces, to go in to the lond of Egipt, and to dwelle there; and alle schulen be waastid in the lond of Egipt, thei schulen falle doun bi swerd, and schulen be wastid in hungur, fro the leeste `til to the mooste, thei schulen die bi swerd and hungur, and schulen be in to swering, and in to myracle, and in to cursyng, and in to schenschipe.
44:13And Y schal visite on the dwelleris of Egipt, as Y visitide on Jerusalem, in swerd, and in hungur, and in pestilence.
44:14And noon schal be, that schal ascape, and be residue of the remenauntis of Jewis, that goen to be pilgrimys in the lond of Egipt, and to turne ayen to the lond of Juda, to which thei reisen her soulis, that thei turne ayen, and dwelle there; thei schulen not turne ayen thidir, no but thei that fledden.
44:15Forsothe alle men answeriden to Jeremye, and wisten, that her wyues maden sacrifice to alien goddis, and alle wymmen, of whiche a greet multitude stood, and alle the puple of dwelleris in the lond of Egipt, in Fatures, and seiden,
44:16We schulen not here of thee the word which thou spekist to vs in the name of oure Lord God,
44:17but we doynge schulen do ech word that schal go out of oure mouth, that we make sacrifice to the queen of heuene, and that we offre to it moist sacrifices, as we diden, and oure fadris, oure kingis, and oure princes, in the citees of Juda, and in the stretis of Jerusalem; and we weren fillid with looues, and it was wel to vs, and we sien noon yuel.
44:18But fro that tyme, in which we ceessiden to make sacrifice to the queen of heuene, and to offre to it moist sacrifices, we hadden nede to alle thingis, and we weren wastid bi swerd and hungur.
44:19That if we maken sacrifice to the queen of heuene, and offren to it moist sacrifices, whether withouten oure hosebondis we maden to it cakis, to worschipe it, and looues to be offrid?
44:20And Jeremye seide to al the puple, ayens the men, and ayens the wymmen, and ayens al the puple, that answeriden to hym the word, and he seide,
44:21Whether not the sacrifice which ye sacrifisiden in the citees of Juda, and in the stretis of Jerusalem, ye, and youre fadris, youre kyngis, and youre princes, and the puple of the lond, terriden God to veniaunce? The Lord hadde mynde on these thingis, and it stiede on his herte;
44:22and the Lord myyte no more bere, for the malice of youre studies, and for abhomynaciouns whiche ye diden. And youre lond is maad in to desolacioun, and in to wondryng, and in to curs, for no dwellere is, as this dai is.
44:23Therfor for ye maden sacrifice to idols, and synneden to the Lord, and herden not the vois of the Lord, and yeden not in the lawe, and in the comandementis, and in the witnessis of hym, therfor these yuels bifellen to you, as this dai is.
44:24Forsothe Jeremye seide to al the puple, and to alle the wymmen, Al Juda, that ben in the lond of Egipt, here ye the word of the Lord.
44:25The Lord of oostis, God of Israel, seith these thingis, and spekith, Ye and youre wyues spaken with youre mouth, and filliden with youre hondis, and seiden, Make we oure vowis whiche we vowiden, that we make sacrifice to the queen of heuene, and offre to it moist sacrifices; ye filliden youre vowis, and diden tho in werk.
44:26Therfor, al Juda, that dwellen in the lond of Egipt, here ye the word of the Lord; Lo! Y swoor in my greet name, seith the Lord, that my name schal no more be clepid bi the mouth of ech man Jew, seiynge, The Lord God lyueth, in al the lond of Egipt.
44:27Lo! Y schal wake on hem in to yuel, and not in to good; and alle the men of Juda, that ben in the lond of Egipt, schulen be waastid, bi swerd and hungur, til thei be wastid outerli.
44:28And a fewe men that fledden the swerd, schulen turne ayen fro the lond of Egipt in to the lond of Juda; and alle the remenauntis of Juda, of hem that entren in to the lond of Egipt, to dwelle there, schulen wite, whos word schal be fillid, myn ether hern.
44:29And this schal be a signe to you, seith the Lord, that Y schal visite on you in this place, that ye wite, that verili my wordis schulen be fillid ayens you in to yuel.
44:30The Lord seith these thingis, Lo! Y schal bitake Farao, the kyng of Egipt, in to the hond of hise enemyes, and in to the hond of hem that seken his lijf, as Y bitook Sedechie, the kyng of Juda, in to the hond of Nabugodonosor, kyng of Babiloyne, his enemye, and sekynge his lijf.

44:1This is the worde that was shewed to Ieremy, concernyng all the Iewes: which dwelt in Egypte: at Migdol, at Taphnis, at Noph, & in the lande of Patures.
44:2Thus sayethe the Lorde of hostes, the God of Israel: Ye haue sene all the misery, that I haue brought vpon Ierusalem, and vpon the cityes of Iuda: so that thys daye they are desolate, and no man dwellynge therin:
44:3and that because of the greate blasphemies which they committed, to prouoke me vnto anger. In that they went backe to do sacrifyce and worship vnto straunge goddes: whom nether ye, ner youre fathers haue knowne.
44:4Howebeit, I sent vnto them my seruauntes all the prophetes. I rose vp early, I sent vnto them, and gaue them warnyng. O do no soche abhominable thynges, & thynges that I hate.
44:5But they wolde not folowe ner herken, to turne from their wickednes, & to do nomore sacrifyces vnto straunge goddes.
44:6Wherfore myne indignation and wrath was kyndled, and it brente vp the cytyes of Iuda, the feldes with the stretes of Ierusalem, so that they were made waste and desolate, as it is come to passe thys daye.
44:7Nowe therfore, thus sayth the Lorde of hoostes, the God of Israel: Howe happeneth it, that ye do so greate euyll vnto youre awne soules: thus to destroye the men and wemen, chyldren and babes of Iuda? so that none of you is lefte,
44:8because ye prouoke me vnto wrathe with the worckes of youre awne handes: when ye offer vnto straunge goddes in the lande of Egipt, where as ye be gone to dwell. That ye myght vtterly peryshe, and that ye myght be reuyled and shamefully intreated of all natyons.
44:9Or haue ye nowe forgotten the wickednes of your forefathers, the wickednes of the kinges of Iuda and their wyues, the wyckednes that ye youre selues and youre wyues haue done in the lande of Iuda, in the cytie and in the lande of Ierusalem.
44:10Yet are ye not sory vnto this daye, ye feare not, nether walke ye in my lawe and in my commaundementes, that I haue geuen vnto you and youre forefathers.
44:11Therfore thus sayeth the Lorde of hoostes, the God of Israel: I am stedfastly aduised and determyned to punysshe you, & to rote out all Iuda.
44:12As for the remnaunt of Iuda, that purposly wente into Egipt, ther to dwell, I wyll take them, and they shall all be destroyed. In the lande of Egypt shall they perysshe, beynge consumed with the swearde and with honger. For from the leest vnto the moost, they shall perysshe with the swearde and with honger. Moreouer, they shalbe reuyled, abhorred, shamed, and confounded.
44:13For I wyll viset them that dwell in Egypte, as I haue visyted Ierusalem, with the swearde, with honger and with pestilence.
44:14So that none of the remnaunt of Iuda, which are gone to dwell in Egipte, shall be left to come agayne into the lande of Iuda all though they thynke to come thyther agayne, and to dwell there. For none shall come agayne, but soch as are fledd awaye.
44:15Then all the men which knewe that their wyues had offred vnto straunge goddes, and a greate sorte of wyues that stode there, yee, and all the people that dwelt there in Egipt in the cytie of Patures, answerde Ieremye, and sayde:
44:16As for the wordes that thou hast spoken vnto vs, in the name of the Lorde, we wyll in no wyse heare them:
44:17but whatsoeuer goeth out of oure awne mouthe, that we wyll do. We wyll do sacrifyce and offer oblatyons vnto the quene of heauen, lyke as we and our forefathers, oure kynges and oure heades haue done in the cytie of Iuda, and in the stretes and feldes of Ierusalem. For then had we plenteousnes of vitayles, then were we in prosperyte, and no mysfortune came vpon vs.
44:18But sens we left to burne incense, and to do sacrifyce vnto the quene of heauen, we haue had scarcenesse of all thynges, and perisshe with the swearde and honger.
44:19Last of all, when we wemen dyd sacrifyce and offered vnto the quene of heauen, dyd we make her cakes and poure vnto her drinckofferinges, euen to that ymage dyd we sacrifyce and seruice, without oure husbandes wylles?
44:20Then sayde Ieremy vnto all the people, to the men, to the wemen, and to all the folke, which had geuen him that answere:
44:21Dyd not the Lorde remember the sacrifyces that ye, youre forefathers, youre kynges and rulers, with all the people, haue offered in the cyties of Iuda, in the stretes and lande of Ierusalem? and hath he not consydered thys in his mynde?
44:22In somoch that the Lorde might no longer suffer the wyckednes of youre inuencyons, and the abhomynable thynges, which ye dyd? Is not youre lande desolate and voyde: yee, abhorred and accursed, so that no man dwelleth therein eny more, as it is come to passe thys daye?
44:23Dyd not all thys happen vnto you, because ye made soch sacrifyces to ydols, and synned agaynst the Lorde. Ye haue not folowed hys voyce, to walke in hys lawe, in his ordynaunces and statutes. Yee, this is the cause, that all misfortune happened vnto you, as it is come to passe this daye.
44:24Moreouer, Ieremy spake vnto all the people and to all the wemen. Heare the worde of the Lorde all Iuda, ye that be in the lande of Egipt.
44:25Thus sayth the Lord of hoostes the God of Israel. Ye and your wyues haue spoken with youre awne mouth, the thinge that ye haue fulfylled in dede. Yee, thus haue ye sayde: We wyll nott fayle, but perfourme the vowes that we haue vowed, we will do sacrifyce & powre out drinckofferinges to the quene of heauen. Purposly wyll ye set vp your awne meanynges and perfourme your vowes.
44:26And therfore, heare the wordes of the Lorde, all Iuda, ye that dwell in the lande of Egipte. Beholde, I haue sworne by my greate name, sayth the Lorde: that my name shall not be rehearsed thorowe eny mans mouthe of Iuda, in all the lande of Egipte, to saye: The Lorde God lyueth,
44:27for I wyll watche, to plage them, and not for theyr wealthe. And all the men of Iuda that be in the lande of Egypte shall peryshe with the swearde, and with honger, vntyll they be vtterly destroyed.
44:28Neuertheles, those that fledd awaye for the swearde, shall come agayne into the lande of Iuda: but there shall be very feawe of them. And all the remnaunt of Iuda, that are gone into Egypte, there to dwell, shall knowe whose wordes shall be founde true: theyrs or myne.
44:29Take thys for a token that I wyll viset you in this place, sayth the Lord: and that ye maye knowe that I (without doubte) will perfourme my purpose vpon you to punyshe you.
44:30Beholde, sayth the Lorde, I wyll delyuer Pharao Hophrea kynge of Egipte into the handes of his enemyes that seke after his lyfe: euen as I gaue Zedekias the king of Iuda, into the handes of Nabuchodonosor kynge of Babilon hys enemye which sought after his lyfe.
