Lamentations - Chapter: 4

>
4:1How is the gold become dim, Changed the best -- the pure gold? Poured out are stones of the sanctuary At the head of all out-places.
4:2The precious sons of Zion, Who are comparable with fine gold, How have they been reckoned earthen bottles, Work of the hands of a potter.
4:3Even dragons have drawn out the breast, They have suckled their young ones, The daughter of my people is become cruel, Like the ostriches in a wilderness.
4:4Cleaved hath the tongue of a suckling unto his palate with thirst, Infants asked bread, a dealer out they have none.
4:5Those eating of dainties have been desolate in out-places, Those supported on scarlet have embraced dunghills.
4:6And greater is the iniquity of the daughter of my people, Than the sin of Sodom, That was overturned as `in' a moment, And no hands were stayed on her.
4:7Purer were her Nazarites than snow, Whiter than milk, ruddier of body than rubies, Of sapphire their form.
4:8Darker than blackness hath been their visage, They have not been known in out-places, Cleaved hath their skin unto their bone, It hath withered -- it hath been as wood.
4:9Better have been the pierced of a sword Than the pierced of famine, For these flow away, pierced through, Without the increase of the field.
4:10The hands of merciful women have boiled their own children, They have been for food to them, In the destruction of the daughter of my people.
4:11Completed hath Jehovah His fury, He hath poured out the fierceness of His anger, And he kindleth a fire in Zion, And it devoureth her foundations.
4:12Believe not did the kings of earth, And any of the inhabitants of the world, That come would an adversary and enemy Into the gates of Jerusalem.
4:13Because of the sins of her prophets, The iniquities of her priests, Who are shedding in her midst the blood of the righteous,
4:14They have wandered naked in out-places, They have been polluted with blood, Without `any' being able to touch their clothing,
4:15`Turn aside -- unclean,' they called to them, `Turn aside, turn aside, touch not,' For they fled -- yea, they have wandered, They have said among nations: `They do not add to sojourn.'
4:16The face of Jehovah hath divided them, He doth not add to behold them, The face of priests they have not lifted up, Elders they have not favoured.
4:17While we exist -- consumed are our eyes for our vain help, In our watch-tower we have watched for a nation `that' saveth not.
4:18They have hunted our steps from going in our broad-places, Near hath been our end, fulfilled our days, For come hath our end.
4:19Swifter have been our pursuers, Than the eagles of the heavens, On the mountains they have burned `after' us, In the wilderness they have laid wait for us.
4:20The breath of our nostrils -- the anointed of Jehovah, Hath been captured in their pits, of whom we said: `In his shadow we do live among nations.'
4:21Joy and rejoice, O daughter of Edom, Dwelling in the land of Uz, Even unto thee pass over doth a cup, Thou art drunk, and makest thyself naked.
4:22Completed `is' thy iniquity, daughter of Zion, He doth not add to remove thee, He hath inspected thy iniquity, O daughter of Edom, He hath removed `thee' because of thy sins!

4:1How is the gold become dim! how is the most fine gold changed! the stones of the sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street.
4:2The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, how are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter!
4:3Even the sea monsters draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones: the daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.
4:4The tongue of the sucking child cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst: the young children ask bread, and no man breaketh it unto them.
4:5They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets: they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills.
4:6For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed on her.
4:7Her Nazarites were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing was of sapphire:
4:8Their visage is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets: their skin cleaveth to their bones; it is withered, it is become like a stick.
4:9They that be slain with the sword are better than they that be slain with hunger: for these pine away, stricken through for want of the fruits of the field.
4:10The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children: they were their meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people.
4:11The LORD hath accomplished his fury; he hath poured out his fierce anger, and hath kindled a fire in Zion, and it hath devoured the foundations thereof.
4:12The kings of the earth, and all the inhabitants of the world, would not have believed that the adversary and the enemy should have entered into the gates of Jerusalem.
4:13For the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests, that have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her,
4:14They have wandered as blind men in the streets, they have polluted themselves with blood, so that men could not touch their garments.
4:15They cried unto them, Depart ye; it is unclean; depart, depart, touch not: when they fled away and wandered, they said among the heathen, They shall no more sojourn there.
4:16The anger of the LORD hath divided them; he will no more regard them: they respected not the persons of the priests, they favoured not the elders.
4:17As for us, our eyes as yet failed for our vain help: in our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save us.
4:18They hunt our steps, that we cannot go in our streets: our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end is come.
4:19Our persecutors are swifter than the eagles of the heaven: they pursued us upon the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness.
4:20The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of the LORD, was taken in their pits, of whom we said, Under his shadow we shall live among the heathen.
4:21Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of Uz; the cup also shall pass through unto thee: thou shalt be drunken, and shalt make thyself naked.
4:22The punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion; he will no more carry thee away into captivity: he will visit thine iniquity, O daughter of Edom; he will discover thy sins.

4:1How the gold dims, the good gold is changed! The stones of the sanctuary are poured out at the head of every street.
4:2The precious sons of Zion are weighed against pure gold. How they are counted as earthen vessels, the work of a potter's hand!
4:3Even the jackals draw out the breast; they suckle their young. But the daughter of my people is cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.
4:4The tongue of the nursling cleaves to his palate in thirst. The young children ask bread, but there is no breaking for them.
4:5Those who ate delicacies are desolate in the streets; those reared on scarlet embrace dunghills.
4:6And the iniquity of the daughter of my people is heaped more than the sin of Sodom, which was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands were spun on her.
4:7Her Nazarites were purer than snow, whiter than milk; they were redder of bone than corals; their cuttings as azure-blue , as lapis lazuli.
4:8Their appearance is darker than soot; they are not recognized in the streets. Their skin has shriveled on their bones; it is dried up, it has become like wood.
4:9Better are the ones slain by the sword than the ones slain by hunger, those who flow away, pierced because the produce of my fields failed .
4:10The hands of the compassionate women have boiled their own children; they became food to them in the ruin of the daughter of my people.
4:11Jehovah has fulfilled His fury; He has poured out His fierce anger and has kindled a fire in Zion; and it has devoured its foundations.
4:12The kings of the earth and all the world's inhabitants would not have believed that the foe and the hater would go into the gates of Jerusalem.
4:13Because of the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests, shedding the blood of the righteous in her midst,
4:14they reeled blind in the streets. They are defiled with blood, so that not any are able to touch their garments.
4:15They cried out to them, Depart! Unclean! Depart, depart! Touch not! Indeed they fled and reeled. They said among the nations, They will not continue to live there.
4:16The face of Jehovah has shared them out; He will not continue to look on them. They did not lift up the face of the priests, they did not favor the elders.
4:17While we are, our eyes fail for our vain help. In our watching, we have watched for a nation; it does not save.
4:18They hunted our steps from going in our open places. Our end came near, our days were fulfilled, for our end had come.
4:19Our pursuers were swifter than the eagles of the heavens; they hotly pursued us on the mountains; they lay in wait for us in the wilderness.
4:20The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of Jehovah, was captured in their pits; of whom we said, In his shadow we will live among the nations.
4:21Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, living in the land of Uz, The cup also shall pass through to you; you shall be drunken and stripped naked.
4:22Your perversity is complete, daughter of Zion; He will not continue to exile you. He will visit your perversity, daughter of Edom; He will expose your sins.
