| 23:1 | The word of the Lord came againe vnto me, saying, |
| 23:2 | Sonne of man, there were two women, the daughters of one mother. |
| 23:3 | And they committed whordomes in Egypt, they committed whordomes in their youth: there were their brests pressed, and there they bruised the teats of their virginitie. |
| 23:4 | And the names of them were Aholah the elder, and Aholibah her sister: and they were mine, & they bare sonnes and daughters: thus were their names: Samaria is Aholah, and Ierusalem Aholibah. |
| 23:5 | And Aholah played the harlot, when she was mine, & she doted on her louers, on the Assyrians her neighbors, |
| 23:6 | Which were clothed with blew, captaines and rulers, all of them desireable yong men, horsemen riding vpon horses. |
| 23:7 | Thus she committed her whordomes with them, with all them that were the chosen men of Assyria, and with all on whom she doted, with all their idoles she defiled her selfe. |
| 23:8 | Neither left she her whoredomes brought from Egypt: for in her youth they lay with her, and they bruised the breasts of her virginitie, and powred their whoredome vpon her. |
| 23:9 | Wherefore I haue deliuered her into the hand of her louers, into the hand of the Assyrians, vpon whom she doted. |
| 23:10 | These discouered her nakednes, they tooke her sonnes and her daughters, and slew her with the sword: and she became famous among women, for they had executed iudgement vpon her. |
| 23:11 | And when her sister Aholibah saw this, she was more corrupt in her inordinate loue then she, and in her whoredoms more then her sister in her whoredomes. |
| 23:12 | She doted vpon the Assyrians her neighbours, captaines and rulers clothed most gorgeously, horsemen riding vpon horses, all of them desireable young men. |
| 23:13 | Then I saw that she was defiled, that they tooke both one way; |
| 23:14 | And that she increased her whoredomes: for when shee saw men pourtrayed vpon the wall, the images of the Caldeans pourtrayed with vermilion, |
| 23:15 | Girded with girdles vpon their loynes, exceeding in dyed attire vpon their heads, all of them princes to looke to, after the maner of the Babylonians of Caldea, the land of their natiuitie: |
| 23:16 | And assoone as shee saw them with her eyes, she doted vpon them, and sent messengers vnto them into Caldea. |
| 23:17 | And the Babylonians came to her into the bed of loue, and they defiled her with their whoredome, and shee was polluted with them, and her mind was alienated from them. |
| 23:18 | So shee discouered her whoredomes, and discouered her nakednesse; then my mind was alienated from her, like as my minde was alienated from her sister. |
| 23:19 | Yet shee multiplied her whoredomes, in calling to remembrance the dayes of her youth, wherein she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt. |
| 23:20 | For she doted vpon their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of asses, and whose issue is like the issue of horses. |
| 23:21 | Thus thou calledst to remembrance the lewdnesse of thy youth, in bruising thy teates by the Egyptians, for the paps of thy youth. |
| 23:22 | Therefore, O Aholibah, thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I will raise vp thy louers against thee, from whom thy minde is alienated, and I will bring them against thee on euery side; |
| 23:23 | The Babylonians, and all the Caldeans, Pekod, and Shoah, and Koa, all the the Assyrians with them, all of them desireable young men, captaines and rulers, great lords and renowmed, all of them riding vpon horses. |
| 23:24 | And they shall come against thee with charets, wagons and wheeles, and with an assemblie of people which shall set against thee buckler, and shield, and helmet round about: and I will set iudgement before them, and they shal iudge thee according to their iudgements. |
| 23:25 | And I will set my ielousie against thee, and they shall deale furiously with thee: they shall take away thy nose and thine eares, and thy remnant shall fall by the sword: they shall take thy sonnes and thy daughters, and thy residue shal be deuoured by the fire. |
| 23:26 | They shall also strippe thee out of thy clothes, and take away thy faire iewels. |
| 23:27 | Thus will I make thy lewdnesse to cease from thee, and thy whoredome brought from the land of Egypt: so that thou shalt not lift vp thine eyes vnto them, nor remember Egypt any more. |
| 23:28 | For thus saith the Lord God; Beholde, I will deliuer thee into the hand of them whom thou hatest; into the hand of them from whom thy mind is alienated. |
| 23:29 | And they shall deale with thee hatefully, and shall take away all thy labour, and shall leaue thee naked and bare, and the nakednesse of thy whoredomes shall bee discouered, both thy lewdnesse and thy whoredomes. |
| 23:30 | I wil doe these things vnto thee, because thou hast gone a whoring after the heathen, and because thou art polluted with their idoles. |
| 23:31 | Thou hast walked in the way of thy sister, therefore will I giue her cup into thine hand. |
| 23:32 | Thus sayth the Lord God, Thou shalt drinke of thy sisters cuppe deepe and large: thou shalt be laughed to scorne and had in derision; it containeth much. |
| 23:33 | Thou shalt be filled with drunkennesse and sorrow, with the cup of astonishment and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria. |
| 23:34 | Thou shalt euen drinke it and sucke it out, and thou shalt breake the sheards thereof, and plucke off thine owne breasts: for I haue spoken it, saith the Lord God. |
| 23:35 | Therefore thus sayth the Lord God, Because thou hast forgotten me, and cast me behinde thy backe, therfore beare thou also thy lewdnesse, and thy whoredomes. |
| 23:36 | The Lord said moreouer vnto mee, Sonne of man, wilt thou iudge Aholah and Aholibah? yea declare vnto them their abominations; |
| 23:37 | That they haue committed adulterie, and blood is in their handes, and with their idoles haue they committed adulterie, and haue also caused their sonnes, whom they bare vnto me, to passe for them through the fire to deuoure them. |
| 23:38 | Moreouer this they haue done vnto me: they haue defiled my Sanctuarie in the same day, and haue profaned my Sabbaths. |
| 23:39 | For when they had slaine their children to their idoles, then they came the same day into my Sanctuarie to profane it, and loe, thus haue they done in the middest of mine house. |
| 23:40 | And furthermore that yee haue sent for men to come from farre, vnto whom a messenger was sent, and loe they came; for whom thou didst wash thy selfe, paintedst thy eyes, and deckedst thy selfe with ornaments, |
| 23:41 | And satest vpon a stately bedde, and a table prepared before it, whereupon thou hast set mine incense and mine oile. |
| 23:42 | And a voice of a multitude being at ease was with her, and with the men of the common sort were brought Sabeans from the wildernesse, which put bracelets vpon their hands, and beautifull crownes vpon their heads. |
| 23:43 | Then said I vnto her that was olde in adulteries; Will they now commit whoredomes with her, and shee with them? |
| 23:44 | Yet they went in vnto her, as they goe in vnto a woman that playeth the harlot: so went they in vnto Aholah & vnto Aholibah the lewd women. |
| 23:45 | And the righteous men, they shall iudge them after the manner of adulteresses, and after the manner of women that shed blood; because they are adulteresses, and blood is in their handes. |
| 23:46 | For thus sayth the Lord God, I will bring vp a company vpon them, and will giue them to be remoued and spoiled. |
| 23:47 | And the companie shall stone them with stones, and dispatch them with their swords: they shall slay their sonnes and their daughters, and burne vp their houses with fire. |
| 23:48 | Thus will I cause lewdnesse to cease out of the land, that all women may be taught not to doe after your lewdnesse. |
| 23:49 | And they shall recompense your lewdnesse vpon you, and ye shall beare the sinnes of your idoles, and yee shall know that I am the Lord God. |
| 23:1 | The worde of the Lord came vnto me, saying |
| 23:2 | Thou sonne of man, there were two women the daughters of one mother |
| 23:3 | And they committed fornication in Egypt, they played the harlottes in their youth: there were their breastes pressed, and there they bruised the teates of their virginitie |
| 23:4 | The names of them were Aholah the elder, and Aholibah her sister, and they were mine, and they bare sonnes and daughters: thus were their names, Samaria is Aholah, and Hierusalem Aholibah |
| 23:5 | Aholah played ye harlot when she was mine, and she was set on fire with her louers the Assyrians her neighbours |
| 23:6 | Which were clothed with blewe silke, both captaynes and princes, they were all pleasaunt young men, and horsemen rydyng vpon horses |
| 23:7 | Thus she committed her whordome with them beyng all chosen men of Asshur, & with all on whom she doted, and defiled her selfe with all their idols |
| 23:8 | Neither left she the fornication that she vsed with the Egyptians: for in her youth they lay with her, they bruised the brestes of her maydenhead, and powred their whordome vpon her |
| 23:9 | Wherfore I deliuered her into the handes of her louers euen into ye handes of the Assyrians vpon whom she doted |
| 23:10 | These discouered her shame, toke her sonnes & daughters, and slue her with the sworde, an euyll name had she among women: for they had executed iudgement vpon her |
| 23:11 | Her sister Aholibah sawe this, and destroyed her selfe with inordinate loue more then she, & with her fornications, more the her sister with her fornications |
| 23:12 | She doted vpo the Assyrians captaines & princes her neighbours, clothed with all maner of gorgious apparel, horsmen riding vpon horses, beyng all pleasaunt young men |
| 23:13 | Then I sawe that she was defiled, and they toke both one way |
| 23:14 | But the encreased styll in whordome: for when she sawe men paynted vpon the wall, the images of the Chaldees paynted with vermilon |
| 23:15 | And girded with girdles vpon their loynes and with dyed attire vpon their heades, lokyng all like princes, after the maner of the Babylonians in Chaldea, the lande where they were borne |
| 23:16 | Assoone as she sawe them, she burnt in loue vpon them, & sent messengers vnto them into the lande of the Chaldees |
| 23:17 | Nowe when the Babylonians came vnto her in the bed of loue, they defiled her with their whordome: and so was she polluted with them, and her lust was abated from them |
| 23:18 | And she discouered her whordome, and disclosed her shame: then my heart forsoke her, like as my heart was gone from her sister also |
| 23:19 | Neuerthelesse, she encreased her whordome more, and remembred the dayes of her youth wherin she had played the harlot in the lande of Egypt |
| 23:20 | She burnt in lust vpon their concubines, whose fleshe was like the fleshe of asses, and their issue like the issue of horses |
| 23:21 | Thus thou hast called to remebraunce the filthinesse of thy youth, when thy teates were bruised by the Egyptians, for the pappes of thy youth |
| 23:22 | Therfore O Aholibah, thus saith the Lorde God, I wyll raise vp thy louers agaynst thee from whom thy heart is departed, and gather them together agaynst thee on euery syde |
| 23:23 | namely the Babylonians and all the Chaldees, rulers, wealthy and mightie men, with all the Assyrians, all pleasaut young men, captaynes and princes, all valiaunt and renowmed, riding vpon horses |
| 23:24 | These shall come vpon thee with charrettes, wagons, and wheeles, and great multitude of people, with buckler, shielde, and helmet they shall beser thee on euery side: I wyll geue iudgement before them, yea they them selues shall iudge thee accordyng to their owne iudgement |
| 23:25 | I wyll lay mine indignation vpon thee, so that they shal deale cruelly with thee: they shall cut of thy nose and thine eares, and thy remnaunt shall fall by the sworde, they shall cary away thy sonnes and daughters, and the residue shalbe deuoured by the fire |
| 23:26 | They shal strip thee out of thy clothes, and take away thy faire iewels |
| 23:27 | Thus wyll I make thy wickednesse to ceasse from thee, and thy fornication out of the lande of Egypt: so that thou shalt turne thine eyes no more after them, and cast thy mynde no more vpon Egypt |
| 23:28 | For thus saith the Lord God, Beholde I wyll deliuer thee into the handes of them whom thou hatest, yea euen into the handes of them from whom thine heart is departed |
| 23:29 | And they shall deale hatefully with thee, and take away all thy labour, & leaue thee naked & bare, and the shame of thy fornications shalbe discouered, both thy wickednesse & thy whordome |
| 23:30 | I wyll do these thynges vnto thee, because thou hast gone a whoryng after the heathen, and because thou art polluted with their idols |
| 23:31 | Thou hast walked in the way of thy sister, therfore wyll I geue her cuppe in thine hande |
| 23:32 | Thus saith the Lorde God, Thou shalt drynke of thy sisters cuppe, deepe & large, thou shalt be laughed to scorne, and had in derision, because it conteineth much |
| 23:33 | Thou shalt be filled with drunkennesse and sorowe euen with the cup of destruction and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria |
| 23:34 | Thou shalt drynke it and sucke it out, and thou shalt breake the sheardes therof, and teare thine owne brestes: for I haue spoken it, saith the Lorde God |
| 23:35 | Therfore thus saith the Lorde God, Forasmuch as thou hast forgotten me, and cast me aside behynde thy backe, so beare nowe thine owne wickednesse and whordome |
| 23:36 | The Lorde sayde moreouer vnto me, Thou sonne of man, wilt thou not iudge Aholah and Aholibah? shewe them their abhominations |
| 23:37 | namely that they haue broken their wedlocke, and blood is in their handes: and with their idols haue they comitted adulterie, and haue also caused their sonnes whom they bare vnto me, to passe by the fire to be their meate |
| 23:38 | Yea and this haue they done vnto me also, they haue defiled my sanctuarie in the same day, and haue prophaned my Sabbathes |
| 23:39 | For when they had slayne their children for their idols, they came the same day into my sanctuarie to defile it: and lo thus haue they done in my house |
| 23:40 | And howe much more is it that they sent for men to come from farre, vnto whom a messenger was sent, and lo they came? for whom thou didst washe thy selfe, and paynted thine eyes, and deckedst thee with ornamentes |
| 23:41 | Thou sattest vpon a stately bed, and a table spread before it, whervpon thou hast set mine incense and mine sylc |
| 23:42 | And a noyse of a mery company at it, and with the men, beside the multitude of the people, were brought men of Saba out of the desert, which gaue them bracelettes vpon their handes, and beautifull crownes vpon their heades |
| 23:43 | And I sayd vnto her that was worne in her adulteries, Nowe shall her fornications come to an ende, and she also |
| 23:44 | And they went in to her as they go vnto a common harlot: euen so went they I say to Aholah and Aholibah, those wicked women |
| 23:45 | And the righteous men, they shall iudge the after the maner of harlottes, and after the maner of murtherers: for they are harlottes, and blood is in their handes |
| 23:46 | Wherfore thus saith the Lorde God, I wyll bryng a great multitude of people vpon them, and geue them to be scattered and spoyled |
| 23:47 | And the multitude shall stone them with stones, and cut them downe with their swordes, they shall slay their sonnes and daughters, and burne vp their houses with fire |
| 23:48 | Thus wyll I cause wickednesse to ceasse out of the lande, that all women may be taught, not to do after your wickednesse |
| 23:49 | And so they shal lay your wickednesse vpon your owne selues, and the sinnes of your idols shall ye beare: and ye shall knowe that I am the Lorde God |
| 23:1 | The worde of the Lord came againe vnto me, saying, |
| 23:2 | Sonne of man, there were two women, the daughters of one mother. |
| 23:3 | And they committed fornication in Egypt, they committed fornication in their youth: there were their breasts pressed, and there they bruised the teates of their virginitie. |
| 23:4 | And the names of them were Aholah the elder, and Aholibah her sister: and they were mine, and they bare sonnes and daughters: thus were their names. Samaria is Aholah, and Ierusalem Aholibah. |
| 23:5 | And Aholah played the harlot when she was mine, and she was set on fire with her louers, to wit, with the Assyrians her neighbours, |
| 23:6 | Which were clothed with blewe silke, both captaines and princes: they were all pleasant yong men, and horsemen riding vpon horses. |
| 23:7 | Thus she committed her whoredome with them, euen with all them that were the chosen men of Asshur, and with all on whome she doted, and defiled her selfe with all their idoles. |
| 23:8 | Neither left she her fornications, learned of the Egyptians: for in her youth they lay with her, and they bruised the breasts of her virginitie, and powred their whoredome vpon her. |
| 23:9 | Wherefore I deliuered her into the hands of her louers, euen into the hands of the Assyrians, vpon whome she doted. |
| 23:10 | These discouered her shame: they tooke away her sonnes and her daughters, and slewe her with the sworde, and she had an euill name among women: for they had executed iudgement vpon her. |
| 23:11 | And when her sister Aholibah sawe this, she marred her selfe with inordinate loue, more then she, and with her fornications more then her sister with her fornications. |
| 23:12 | She doted vpon the Assyrians her neighbours, both captaines and princes clothed with diuers sutes, horsemen ryding vpon horses: they were all pleasant yong men. |
| 23:13 | Then I sawe that she was defiled, and that they were both after one sort, |
| 23:14 | And that she encreased her fornications: for when she sawe men painted vpon the wall, the images of the Caldeans painted with vermelon, |
| 23:15 | And girded with girdles vpon their loynes, and with dyed attyre vpon their heads (looking all like princes after the maner of the Babylonians in Caldea, the land of their natiuitie) |
| 23:16 | Assoone, I say, as she sawe them, she doted vpon them, and sent messengers vnto them into Caldea. |
| 23:17 | Nowe when the Babylonians came to her into the bed of loue, they defiled her with their fornication, and she was polluted with them, and her lust departed from them. |
| 23:18 | So she discouered her fornication, and disclosed her shame: then mine heart forsooke her, like as mine heart had forsaken her sister. |
| 23:19 | Yet she encreased her whoredome more, and called to remembrance ye dayes of her youth, wherein she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt. |
| 23:20 | For she doted vpon their seruants whose members are as the members of asses, and whose yssue is like the yssue of horses. |
| 23:21 | Thou calledst to remembrance the wickednes of thy youth, when thy teates were bruised by ye Egyptians: therefore ye paps of thy youth are thus. |
| 23:22 | Therefore, O Aholibah, thus sayeth the Lord God, Beholde, I will raise vp thy louers against thee, from whome thine heart is departed, and I will bring them against thee on euery side, |
| 23:23 | To wit, the Babylonians, and all the Caldeans, Peked, and Shoah, and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them: they were all pleasant yong men, captaines and princes: all they were valiant and renoumed, riding vpon horses. |
| 23:24 | Euen these shall come against thee with charets, waggons, and wheeles, and with a multitude of people, which shall set against thee, buckler and shield, and helmet round about: and I will leaue the punishment vnto them, and they shall iudge thee according to their iudgements. |
| 23:25 | And I wil lay mine indignation vpon thee, and they shall deale cruelly with thee: they shall cut off thy nose and thine eares, and thy remnant shall fall by the sword: they shall cary away thy sonnes and thy daughters, and thy residue shall be deuoured by the fire. |
| 23:26 | They shall also strip thee out of thy clothes, and take away thy fayre iewels. |
| 23:27 | Thus wil I make thy wickednes to cease from thee and thy fornication out of the land of Egypt: so that thou shalt not lift vp thine eyes vnto them, nor remember Egypt any more. |
| 23:28 | For thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I wil deliuer thee into the hand of them, whome thou hatest: euen into the hands of them from whome thine heart is departed. |
| 23:29 | And they shall handle thee despitefully, and shall take away all thy labour, and shall leaue thee naked and bare, and the shame of thy fornications shalbe discouered, both thy wickednes, and thy whoredome. |
| 23:30 | I wil doe these things vnto thee, because thou hast gone a whoring after the heathen, and because thou art polluted with their idoles. |
| 23:31 | Thou hast walked in the way of thy sister: therefore wil I giue her cup into thine hand. |
| 23:32 | Thus saith ye Lord God, Thou shalt drinke of thy sisters cup, deepe and large: thou shalt be laughed to scorne and had in derision, because it containeth much. |
| 23:33 | Thou shalt be filled with drunkennes and sorow, euen with the cup of destruction, and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria. |
| 23:34 | Thou shalt euen drinke it, and wring it out to the dregges, and thou shalt breake the sheards thereof, and teare thine owne breasts: for I haue spoken it, sayth the Lord God. |
| 23:35 | Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Because thou hast forgotten me, and cast me behinde thy backe, therefore thou shalt also beare thy wickednes and thy whoredome. |
| 23:36 | The Lord sayd moreouer vnto me, Sonne of man, wilt thou iudge Aholah and Aholibah? and wilt thou declare to them their abominations? |
| 23:37 | For they haue played the whores, and blood is in their hands, and with their idoles haue they committed adulterie, and haue also caused their sonnes, whome they bare vnto me, to passe by the fire to be their meate. |
| 23:38 | Moreouer, thus haue they done vnto me: they haue defiled my Sanctuarie in the same day, and haue prophaned my Sabbaths. |
| 23:39 | For when they had slaine their children to their idoles, they came the same day into my Sanctuarie to defile it: and loe, thus haue they done in the middes of mine house. |
| 23:40 | And howe much more is it that they sent for men to come from farre vnto whom a messenger was sent, and loe, they came? for whome thou diddest wash thy selfe, and paintedst thine eyes, and deckedst thee with ornaments, |
| 23:41 | And satest vpon a costly bed, and a table prepared before it, whereupon thou hast set mine incense and mine oyle. |
| 23:42 | And a voyce of a multitude being at ease, was with her: and with the men to make the company great were brought men of Saba from the wildernes, which put bracelets vpon their hands, and beautifull crownes vpon their heads. |
| 23:43 | Then I sayd vnto her, that was olde in adulteries, Now shall she and her fornications come to an end. |
| 23:44 | And they went in vnto her as they goe to a common harlot: so went they to Aholah and Aholibah the wicked women. |
| 23:45 | And ye righteous men they shall iudge them, after the maner of harlots, and after the maner of murtherers: for they are harlots, and blood is in their hands. |
| 23:46 | Wherefore thus sayth the Lord God, I will bring a multitude vpon them, and will giue them vnto the tumult, and to the spoyle, |
| 23:47 | And the multitude shall stone them with stones, and cut them with their swordes: they shall slay their sonnes, and their daughters, and burne vp their houses with fire. |
| 23:48 | Thus will I cause wickednesse to cease out of the land, that all women may be taught not to doe after your wickednesse. |
| 23:49 | And they shall laye your wickednesse vpon you, and ye shall beare the sinnes of your idoles, and ye shall knowe that I am the Lord God. |
