| 23:1 | The worde of the Lord came vnto me sayeng: |
| 23:2 | Thou sonne of man, there were two wemen, that had one mother. |
| 23:3 | These (when they were yonge) beganne to playe the harlottes in Egypt. There were theyr brestes brosed, & the pappes of theyr maydenhead did the Egyptians destroye. |
| 23:4 | The eldest of them was called Oholah & her yongest syster Oholibah. These two were my wyues, & bare sonnes & daughters. Theyr names were Samaria, & that was Oholah: & Ierusalem, that was Oholibah. |
| 23:5 | As for Oholah she beganne to go a whoring, when I had taken her to me. She was sett on fyre vpon her louers the Assirians |
| 23:6 | as her neybours which had to do wt her: euen the princes & Lordes that were deckte in costly araye fayre yonge men, lusty ryders of horses. |
| 23:7 | Thus thorow her whordome, she cleued vnto all the yonge men of Assiria. Yee, she was madd vpon them, & defyled her selfe wt all theyr Idols. |
| 23:8 | Nether ceassed she from the fornicacyon, that she vsed wt the Egypcians: for in her youth they laye wt her, they brosed the brestes of her maydenhead, & poured theyr whordome vpon her. |
| 23:9 | Wherfore, I delyuered her into the handes of her louers, euen the Assirians, whom she so loued. |
| 23:10 | These discouered her shame, toke her sonnes & daughters, & slewe her wt the sweard: An euel name gat she of all people, and they punished her. |
| 23:11 | Her sister Oholibah sawe this, and destroyed her selfe wt inordynate loue, more then she, & exceded her syster in whordom |
| 23:12 | she loued the Assirians (which also laye wt her) namely, the princes & greate lordes, that were clothed wt al maner of gorgious apparell all lusty horsmen & fayre yonge personnes. |
| 23:13 | Then I sawe, that they both were defyled a lyke. |
| 23:14 | But she increased styll in whordome, for when she sawe men paynted vpon the wall, the ymages of the Caldees sett forth wt fressh couloures, |
| 23:15 | wt fayre gyrdles about them & goodly bonettes vpon theyr heades, lokynge all lyke prynces (after the maner of the Babylonyans and Chaldees in theyr awne lande where they be borne) |
| 23:16 | immediatly, as soone as she sawe them, she brent in loue vpon them, and sente messaungers for them into the lande of the Chaldees. |
| 23:17 | Now when the Babylonyans came to her, they laye with her and defyled her with theyr whordome, and so was she polluted with them. And when her lust was abated from them, |
| 23:18 | her whordome and shame was discouered and sene: then my herte forsoke her, lyke as my herte was gone from her syster also. |
| 23:19 | Neuerthelesse, she vsed her whordome euer the longer the more, and remembred the dayes of her youth, wherin she had played the harlot in the lande of Egypt: |
| 23:20 | she brent in lust vpon them, whose fleshe was lyke the flesh of Asses, and theyr sede lyke the sede of horses. |
| 23:21 | Thus thou hast renued the fylthynesse of the youth, when thy louers brosed thy pappes, and marred thy brestes in Egypte. |
| 23:22 | Therfore (O Oholibah) thus sayeth the Lord God: I will rayse vp thy louers (wt whom thou hast satysfyed thy lust) against the, and gather them together rounde about the: |
| 23:23 | namely the Babylonians, and all the Chaldees, rulers, mightye men & tyrauntes, wt all the Assirians: all yonge & fayre louers: princes and Lordes, knyghtes and gentelmen, which be all good horsmen. |
| 23:24 | These shall come vpon the with horses, charrettes, and a greate multitude of people: which shalbe harnessed aboute the on euery syde, wt brestplates, shyldes & helmettes. I wyll punish the before them, yee, they them selues shall punysh the, accordynge to theyr awne iudgement. |
| 23:25 | I will put my gelousy vpon the, so that they shal deale cruelly with the. They shall cut of thy nose and thyne eares, and the remnaunt shall fall thorow the swearde. They shall cary awaye thy sonnes and daughters, and the resydue shalbe brent in the fyre. |
| 23:26 | They shall strype the out of thy clothes, and cary thy costly Iewels awaye with them. |
| 23:27 | Thus wyll I make an ende of thy fylthynesse and whordome, which thou hast brought oute of the lande of Egypte: so that thou shalt turne thyne eyes nomore after them, and cast thy mynde nomore vpon Egypte. |
| 23:28 | For thus sayeth the Lorde beholde I will delyuer the into the handes of them, whom thou hatest, yee, euen into the handes of them, with whom thou hast fulfylled thy lust, |
| 23:29 | whych shall deale cruelly wyth the. All thy laboure shall they take with them, and leaue the naked and bare, and thus the shame of thy fylthye whordome shall come to lyght. |
| 23:30 | All these thynges shall happen vnto the, because of thy whordome which thou hast vsed amonge the Gentyls wyth whose Idols thou hast defyled thy self. |
| 23:31 | Thou hast walcked in the waye of thy syster, therfore wyll I geue the her cuppe in thy hande. |
| 23:32 | Thus sayeth the Lord God: Thou shalt dryncke of thy systers cuppe, how depe and farre so euer it be to the botome. Thou shalt be laughed to scorne, and had as greatly in derisyon, as is possible. |
| 23:33 | Thou shalt be full of dronkennes and sorowe, for the cuppe of thy syster Samaria is a cuppe of destruccion and wastynge: |
| 23:34 | the same shalt thou dryncke, and suppe it out euen to the dregges, yee, thou shalt eat vp the broken peces of it, & so teare thyne awne brestes: For euen I haue spoken it sayeth the Lorde God. |
| 23:35 | Therfore, thus sayeth the Lorde God: For so moch as thou hast forgotten me, and cast me aside behinde the, so beare now thyne awne fylthines and whordome. |
| 23:36 | The Lorde sayde moreouer vnto me: Thou sonne of man wilt thou not reproue Oholah and Oholibah? Shewe them theyr abhominacions: |
| 23:37 | namely that they haue broken theyr wedlocke, & stayned theyr handes wt bloude: yee, euen wt theyr ydoles haue they commytted aduoutry and offred them by the fyre theyr awne children (to be deuoured) whom they had borne vnto me. |
| 23:38 | Yee, & thys haue they done vnto me also: they haue defyled my Sanctuary in that same daye, & haue vnhalowed my Sabboth. |
| 23:39 | For when they had slayne theyr children for theyr Idols, they came the same daye into my Sanctuary to defyle it. Lo, thys haue they done in my house: |
| 23:40 | Besyde all thys, thou hast sent they messaungers for men out of farre countrees: & when they came, thou hast bathed & painted thyne eyes wt colours, trymmed & set forth thy self of the best fassion: |
| 23:41 | thou sattest vpon a goodly bed and a table spred before the: wherupon thou hast set myne incense and myne oyle. |
| 23:42 | Then was there great chere with her to optayne peace, and though with those men many men came, yet were ther also brought, men of Sabba from the wildernesse: which gaue them bracelettes vpon theyr handes, & sett glorious crownes vpon theyr heades: |
| 23:43 | and I sayde vnto her: that seynge she was stryken in age in her whordommes: now shall her fornycations come to an end wt her. |
| 23:44 | And they wente into her as vnto a comen harlot Euen so went they, (I say) to Oholah & Oholibah those fylthy wemen. |
| 23:45 | O all ye that loue vertue & ryghteousnes, iudge them, punishe them: as aduoutrers & murtherers ought to be iudged & punished. For they are breakers of wedlocke, & the bloude is in theyr handes. |
| 23:46 | Wherfore thus sayeth the Lorde God I wil bringe a greate multitude of people vpon them, & make them be scatred & spoyled: |
| 23:47 | these shall stone them, & gore them wt theyr sweardes. They shal slaye theyr sonnes & daughters, and burne vp theyr houses with fyre. |
| 23:48 | Thus wyll I destroye all soch fylthynes out of the land: that all wemen maye learne, not to do after your vnclennes. |
| 23:49 | And so they shall laye your fylthynes vpon your awne selues, and ye shalbe punyshed for the synnes that ye haue commytted with your Idols: and ye shall knowe that I am the Lorde God. |
| 23:1 | And the word of the Lord was maad to me, |
| 23:2 | and he seide, Thou, sone of man, twei wymmen weren the douytris of o modir, and diden fornycacioun in Egipt; |
| 23:3 | in her yonge wexynge age thei diden fornicacioun; there the brestis of hem weren maad low, and the tetis of the tyme of mariage of hem weren brokun. |
| 23:4 | Forsothe the names of hem ben, Oolla, the more sistir, and Ooliba the lesse sistir of hir. And Y hadde hem, and thei childiden sones and douytris; certis the names of hem ben Samarie Oolla, and Jerusalem Ooliba. |
| 23:5 | Therfor Oolla dide fornicacioun on me, and was wood on hir louyeris, on Assiriens neiyinge, |
| 23:6 | clothid with iacinct, princes, and magistratis, yonge men of coueytise, alle kniytis, and stieris of horsis. |
| 23:7 | And sche yaf hir fornicaciouns on hem, on alle the chosun sones of Assiriens; and in alle on whiche sche was wood, sche was defoulid in the vnclennessis of hem. |
| 23:8 | Ferthermore and sche lefte not hir fornicaciouns, whiche sche hadde in Egipt; for whi and thei slepten with hir in the yongthe of hir, and thei braken the tetis of the tyme of mariage of hir, and thei scheden out her fornicacioun on hir. |
| 23:9 | Therfor Y yaf hir in to the hondis of hir louyeris, in to the hondis of the sones of Assur, on whos letcherie sche was wood. |
| 23:10 | Thei diskyueriden the schenschipe of hir; thei token awei the sones and the douytris of hir, and killiden hir with swerd; and the wymmen weren maad famouse, that is, sclaundrid, and thei diden domes in hir. |
| 23:11 | And whanne hir sistir Ooliba hadde seyn this, sche was wood in letcherie more than that sistre, and yaf vnschamefastli hir fornicacioun on the fornicacioun of hir sistre, |
| 23:12 | to the sones of Assiriens, to duykis and magistratis comynge to hir, that weren clothid with dyuerse cloth, to knyytis that weren borun on horsis, and to yonge men with noble schap, to alle men. |
| 23:13 | And Y siy that o weie of both sistris was defoulid, |
| 23:14 | and sche encreesside hir fornycaciouns. And whanne sche hadde seyn men peyntid in the wal, the ymagis of Caldeis expressid with colouris, |
| 23:15 | and gird on the reynes with kniytis girdlis, and cappis peyntid in the heedis of hem, the foormes of alle duykis, the licnesse of the sones of Babiloyne, and of the lond of Caldeis, in which thei weren borun; |
| 23:16 | sche was wood on hem bi coueitise of hir iyen, and sche sente messangeris to hem in to Caldee. |
| 23:17 | And whanne the sones of Babiloyne weren comun to hir, to the bed of tetis, thei defouliden hir in her letcheries of virgyns; and sche was defoulid of hem, and the soule of hir was fillid of hem. |
| 23:18 | Also sche made nakid hir fornicaciouns, and diskyuered hir schenschipe; and my soule yede awei fro hir, as my soule hadde go awei fro hir sistir. |
| 23:19 | For sche multiplied hir fornicaciouns, and hadde mynde on the daies of hir yongthe, in whiche sche dide fornicacioun in the lond of Egipt. |
| 23:20 | And sche was wood in letcherie on the liggyng bi of hem, whos fleischis ben as the fleischis of assis, and as the membris of horsis ben the membris of hem. |
| 23:21 | And thou visitidist the grete trespas of thi yongthe, whanne thi brestis weren maad low in Egipt, and the tetis of the tyme of thi mariage weren brokun. |
| 23:22 | Therfor, thou Ooliba, the Lord God seith these thingis, Lo! Y schal reise alle thi louyeris ayens thee, of whiche thi soule was fillid, and Y schal gadere hem ayens thee in cumpas; |
| 23:23 | the sones of Babiloyne, and alle Caldeis, noble and miyti men, and princes, alle the sones of Assiriens, and yonge men of noble foorme, duykis, and magistratis, alle princes of princes, and named stieris of horsis. |
| 23:24 | And thei araied with chare and wheel schulen come on thee, the multitude of puplis schulen be armed with haburioun, and scheeld, and basynet, ayens thee on ech side; and Y schal yyue doom bifor hem, and thei schulen deme thee bi her domes. |
| 23:25 | And Y schal sette my feruour in thee, which thei schulen vse with thee in woodnesse; thei schulen kitte awei thi nose and thin eeris, and thei schulen sle with swerd tho thingis that weren left; thei schulen take thi sones and thi douytris, and thi laste thing schal be deuourid bi fier. |
| 23:26 | And thei schulen make thee nakid of thi clothis, and thei schulen take awei the vessels of thi glorie. |
| 23:27 | And Y schal make thi greet trespasse to reste fro thee, and thi fornicacioun fro the lond of Egipt; and thou schalt not reise thin iyen to hem, and thou schalt no more haue mynde on Egipt. |
| 23:28 | For the Lord God seith these thingis, Lo! Y schal yyue thee in to the hondis of hem whiche thou hatist, `in to the hondis of hem of whiche thi soule was fillid, |
| 23:29 | and thei schulen do with thee in hatrede. And thei schulen take awei alle thi trauels, and thei schulen leeue thee nakid, and ful of schenschipe; and the schenschipe of thi fornicaciouns schal be schewid. Thi greet |
| 23:30 | trespas and thi fornycaciouns han do these thingis to thee; for thou didist fornicacioun aftir hethene men, among whiche thou were defoulid in the idols of hem. |
| 23:31 | Thou yedist in the weie of thi sister, and Y schal yyue the cuppe of hir in thin hond. |
| 23:32 | The Lord God seith these thingis, Thou schalt drinke the cuppe of thi sistir, the depthe, and the broodnesse; thou that art most able to take, schalt be in to scornyng, and in to mouwyng. |
| 23:33 | Thou schalt be fillid with drunkenesse and sorewe, with the cuppe of mourenyng and of heuynesse, with the cuppe of thi sister Samarie. |
| 23:34 | And thou schalt drynke it, and thou schalt drinke of til to the drastis, and thou schalt deuoure the relifs therof, and thou schalt to-reende thi brestis, for Y the Lord spak, seith the Lord God. |
| 23:35 | Therfor the Lord God seith these thingis, For thou hast foryete me, and hast cast forth me bihynde thi bodi, bere thou also thi greet trespas and thi fornicaciouns. |
| 23:36 | And the Lord God seide to me, and spak, Sone of man, whether thou demest Ooliba and Oolla, and tellist to hem the grete trespassis of hem? |
| 23:37 | For thei diden auowtrie, and blood was in the hondis of hem, and thei diden fornicacioun with her idols; ferthermore and thei offriden to tho the sones whiche thei gendriden to me, for to be deuourid. |
| 23:38 | But also thei diden this to me, thei defouleden my seyntuarie in that dai, and maden vnhooli my sabatis. |
| 23:39 | And whanne thei sacrifisiden her sones to her idols, and entriden in to my seyntuarie in that dai, that thei schulden defoule it, thei diden also these thingis in the myddis of myn hous. |
| 23:40 | Thei senten to men comyng fro fer, to whiche thei hadden sent messangeris. Therfor lo! thei camen, to whiche thou waischidist thee, and anoyntidist thin iyen with oynement of wymmen, and thou were ourned with wymmens atier. |
| 23:41 | Thou satist in a ful fair bed, and a boord was ourned bifor thee; thou settidist myn encense and myn oynement on it. |
| 23:42 | And a vois of multitude makynge ful out ioye was ther ynne; and in men that weren brouyt of the multitude of men, and camen fro desert, thei settiden bies in the hondis of hem, and faire corouns on the heedis of hem. |
| 23:43 | And Y seide to hir, that was defoulid in auoutries, Now also this schal do fornycacioun in hir fornicacioun. |
| 23:44 | And thei entriden to hir; as to a womman, an hoore, so thei entriden to Oolla and to Ooliba, cursid wymmen. |
| 23:45 | Therfor these men ben iust, these schulen deme thilke wymmen bi the doom of auoutressis, and bi the doom of hem that scheden out blood; for thei ben auoutressis, and blood is in the hondis of hem, and thei diden fornicacioun with her idols. |
| 23:46 | For the Lord God seith these thingis, Bringe thou multitudis to hem, and yyue thou hem in to noise, and in to raueyn; |
| 23:47 | and be thei stoonyd with the stoonys of puplis, and be thei stikid togidere with the swerdis of hem. Thei schulen sle the sones and the douytris of hem, and thei schulen brenne with fier the housis of hem. |
| 23:48 | And Y schal do awei greet trespas fro the lond; and alle wymmen schulen lerne, that thei do not aftir the greet trespas of hem. |
| 23:49 | And thei schulen yyue youre grete trespas on you; and ye schulen bere the synnes of youre idols, and ye schulen wite, that Y am the Lord God. |
| 23:1 | The worde off the LORDE came vnto me, sayenge: |
| 23:2 | Thou sonne of man, there were two wome, that had one mother: |
| 23:3 | These (when they were yonge) beganne to playe the harlottes in Egipte. There were their brestes brussed, and the pappes off their maydenheade destroyed. |
| 23:4 | The eldest of them was called Oola, and hir yongest sister Ooliba. These two were myne, and bare sonnes and doughters. Their names were, Samaria, and that was Oola: and Ierusalem, that was Ooliba. |
| 23:5 | As for Oola, she beganne to go a whorynge, when I had take her to me. She was set on fyre vpon hir louers the Assirians, |
| 23:6 | which had to do with her: euen the prynces and lordes, that were deckte in costly araye: fayre yonge men, lusty ryders of horses. |
| 23:7 | Thus thorow hir whordome, she cleued vnto all the yonge men off Assiria: Yee she was madde vpon them, and defyled herselff with all their Idols. |
| 23:8 | Nether ceassed she fro the fornicacio, that she vsed with the Egipcians: for in hir youth they laye wt her, they brussed the brestes of hir maydenheade, and poured their wordome vpon her. |
| 23:9 | Wherfore, I delyuered her in to ye hodes of hir louers, euen the Assirians, whom she so loued. |
| 23:10 | These discouered hir shame, toke hir sonnes and doughters, and slewe her with the swearde: An euell name gat she of all people, ad they punyshed her. |
| 23:11 | Hir sister Ooliba sawe this, ad destroyed herself wt inordinate loue, more then she, & exceaded hir sister in whordome: |
| 23:12 | she loued ye Assirians (which also laye wt her) namely, the prynces & greate lordes, that were clothed wt all maner of gorgious apparell, all lusty horsmen and fayre yonge personnes. |
| 23:13 | Then I sawe, that they both were defyled a like. |
| 23:14 | But she increased still in whordome: for when she sawe men paynted vpon the wall, the ymages off the Caldees set forth with fresh colours, |
| 23:15 | with fayre gyrdles aboute them, and goodly bonettes vpon their heades, lokynge all like prynces (after ye maner of the Babilonias and Caldees in their owne londe, where they be borne). |
| 23:16 | Inmediatly, as soone as she sawe them, she brent in loue vpon them, and sent messaugers for them in to the londe of the Caldees. |
| 23:17 | Now when the Babilonias came to her, they laye with her, and defyled her with their whordome, and so was she poluted with with them. And when hir lust was abated from them, |
| 23:18 | hir whordome and shame was discouered & sene: then my herte forsoke her, like as my herte was gone from hir sister also. |
| 23:19 | Neuertheles she vsed hir whordome euer the longer the more, and remembred the dayes off hir youth, wherin she had played the harlot in the londe off Egipte: |
| 23:20 | she brent in lust vpon them, whose flesh was like ye flesh of Asses, and their sede like the sede off horses. |
| 23:21 | Thus thou hast renued the fylthynesse of thy youth, when thy louers bressed yi pappes, and marred thy brestes in Egipte. |
| 23:22 | Therfore (o Ooliba) thus saieth ye LORDE God. I will rayse vp thy louers (with whom thou hast satisfied thy lust) agaynst the, and gather them together rounde aboute the: |
| 23:23 | Namely, the Babilonians, and all the Caldees: Pecod, Schoa and Coa, with all the Assirians: all yonge and fayre louers: prynces and lordes, knyghtes and gentlemen, which be all good horsmen: |
| 23:24 | These shall come vpon the with horses, charettes, & a greate multitude of people: which shal be harnessed aboute the on euery syde, wt brestplates, sheldes and helmettes. I will punysh ye before them, yee they the selues shal punysh the, acordinge to their owne iudgmet. |
| 23:25 | I will put my gelousy vpon the, so that they shall deale cruelly with the. They shal cut of thy nose and thine eares, and the remnaunt shall fall thorow the swearde. They shall cary awaye thy sonnes and doughters, & the resydue shalbe brent in the fyre. |
| 23:26 | Thy shal strype the out of thy clothes, & cary thy costly Iewels awaye with them. |
| 23:27 | Thus will I make an ende off thy fylthynesse & whordome, which thou hast brought out of the lode of Egipte: so that thou shalt turne thine eyes nomore after them, & cast thy mynde nomore vpon Egipte. |
| 23:28 | For thus saieth the LORDE: Beholde, I will delyuer ye in to the hodes of them, whom thou hatest: yee euen in to the hondes of them, with who thou hast fulfylled thy lust, |
| 23:29 | which shall deale cruelly with ye: All thy laboure shal they take with them, and leaue the naked and bare, and thus the shame of thy filthy whordome shal come to light. |
| 23:30 | All these thinges shal happen vnto the, because of thy whordome, which thou hast vsed amonge the Gentiles, with whose Idols thou hast defyled yi self. |
| 23:31 | Thou hast walked in the waye of thy sister, therfore will I geue the hir cuppe in thy honde. |
| 23:32 | Thus saieth the LORDE God: Thou shalt drynke off thy sisters cuppe, how depe & farre so euer it be to the botome. Thou shalt be laughed to scorne, and had as greatly in derision, as is possible. |
| 23:33 | Thou shalt be full off dronckennes and sorowe, for the cuppe of yi sister Samaria is a cuppe of destruccion & waistinge: |
| 23:34 | the same shalt thou drynke, and suppe it out eue to ye dregges, yee thou shalt eate vp the broken peces off it, and so teare thine owne brestes: For euen I haue spoken it, saieth the LORDE God. |
| 23:35 | Therfore thus saieth ye LORDE God: For so moch as thou hast forgotte me, & cast me asyde, so beare now thine owne fylthinesse & whordome. |
| 23:36 | The LORDE sayde morouer vnto me: Thou sonne of ma, wilt thou not reproue Oola & Ooliba? Shewe the their abhominacios: |
| 23:37 | namely, yt they haue broke their wedlocke, & stayned their hodes wt bloude: yee euen wt their Idols haue they committed aduoutry, & offred them their owne children (to be deuoured) who they had borne vnto me. |
| 23:38 | Yee & this haue they done vnto me also: they haue defyled my Sactuary in that same daye, & haue vnhalowed my Sabbath. |
| 23:39 | For when they had slayne their childre for their Idols, they came the same daye in to my Sanctuary, to defyle it. Lo, this haue they done in my house. |
| 23:40 | Besyde all this, thou hast sent yi messaungers for men out of farre coutrees: and whe they came, thou hast bathed, trymmed and set forth thy selff off the best fashion: |
| 23:41 | thou sattest vpo a goodly bed, & a table spred before the: whervpon thou hast set myne incense and myne oyle. |
| 23:42 | Then was there greate cheare wt her, & the men yt were sent fro farre coutrees ouer the deserte: vnto these they gaue bracelettes vpon their hondes, & set glorious crownes vpon their heades. |
| 23:43 | Then thought I: no doute, these wil vse their harlotry also wt yoder olde whore. |
| 23:44 | And they wente in to her, as vnto a comon harlot: Euen so wente they also to Oola & Ooliba, those filthy women. |
| 23:45 | O ye all that loue vertue and rightuousnes, iudge the, punysh them: as aduoutrers and murtherers ought to be iudged and punyshed. For they are breakers off wedlocke, and the bloude is in their hondes. |
| 23:46 | Wherfore thus saieth the LORDE God: bringe a greate multitude off people vpon them, and make them be scatred and spoyled: |
| 23:47 | these shal stone them, and gorre them with their sweardes. They shal slaye their sonnes and doughters and burne vp their houses with fyre. |
| 23:48 | Thus will I destroye all soch fylthynes out off the londe: that all women may lerne, not to do after youre vnclenesse. |
| 23:49 | And so they shall laye youre fylthinesse vpon youre owne selues, and ye shalbe punyshed for the synnes, that ye haue committed with youre Idols: & ye shall knowe, that I am the LORDE. |
