| 5:1 | Hear this word that I am bearing to you, A lamentation, O house of Israel: |
| 5:2 | `Fallen, not again to rise, hath the virgin of Israel, Left on her land -- she hath no raiser up.' |
| 5:3 | For thus said the Lord Jehovah: The city that is going out a thousand, Doth leave an hundred, And that which is going out an hundred, Doth leave ten to the house of Israel. |
| 5:4 | For thus said Jehovah to the house of Israel: Seek ye Me, and live, |
| 5:5 | And seek not Beth-El, and Gilgal enter not, And Beer-Sheba pass not through, For Gilgal doth utterly remove, And Beth-El doth become vanity. |
| 5:6 | Seek ye Jehovah, and live, Lest He prosper as fire `against' the house of Joseph, And it hath consumed, And there is no quencher for Beth-El. |
| 5:7 | Ye who are turning to wormwood judgment, And righteousness to the earth have put down, |
| 5:8 | The maker of Kimah and Kesil, And the turner to morning of death-shade, And day `as' night He hath made dark, Who is calling to the waters of the sea, And poureth them on the face of the earth, Jehovah `is' His name; |
| 5:9 | Who is brightening up the spoiled against the strong, And the spoiled against a fortress cometh. |
| 5:10 | They have hated a reprover in the gate, And a plain speaker they abominate. |
| 5:11 | Therefore, because of your trampling on the poor, And the tribute of corn ye take from him, Houses of hewn work ye have built, And ye do not dwell in them, Desirable vineyards ye have planted, And ye do not drink their wine. |
| 5:12 | For I have known -- many `are' your transgressions, And mighty your sins, Adversaries of the righteous, taking ransoms, And the needy in the gate ye turned aside. |
| 5:13 | Therefore is the wise at that time silent, For an evil time it `is'. |
| 5:14 | Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live, And it is so; Jehovah, God of Hosts, `is' with you, as ye said. |
| 5:15 | Hate evil, and love good, And set up judgment in the gate, It may be Jehovah, God of Hosts, doth pity the remnant of Joseph. |
| 5:16 | Therefore, thus said Jehovah, God of Hosts, the Lord, In all broad places `is' lamentation, And in all out-places they say, `Alas, alas,' And called the husbandman to mourning, And to lamentation the skilful of wailing. |
| 5:17 | And in all vineyards `is' lamentation, For I pass into thy midst, said Jehovah. |
| 5:18 | Ho, ye who are desiring the day of Jehovah, Why `is' this to you -- the day of Jehovah? It is darkness, and not light, |
| 5:19 | As `when' one fleeth from the face of the lion, And the bear hath met him, And he hath come in to the house, And hath leant his hand on the wall, And the serpent hath bitten him. |
| 5:20 | Is not the day of Jehovah darkness and not light, Even thick darkness that hath no brightness? |
| 5:21 | I have hated -- I have loathed your festivals, And I am not refreshed by your restraints. |
| 5:22 | For though ye cause burnt-offerings and your presents to ascend to Me, I am not pleased, And the peace-offering of your fatlings I behold not. |
| 5:23 | Turn aside from Me the noise of thy songs, Yea, the praise of thy psaltery I hear not. |
| 5:24 | And roll on as waters doth judgment, And righteousness as a perennial stream. |
| 5:25 | Sacrifices and offering did ye bring nigh to Me, In a wilderness forty years, O house of Israel? |
| 5:26 | And ye bare Succoth your king, and Chiun your images, The star of your god, that ye made for yourselves. |
| 5:27 | And I removed you beyond Damascus, Said Jehovah, God of Hosts `is' His name. |

| 5:1 | Heare this worde (o ye house of Israel) and why? I must make this mone for you: |
| 5:2 | The vyrgin Israel shall fall, & neuer ryse vp agayne: she shall be cast downe vpon hir owne grounde, and no man shal helpe hir vp. |
| 5:3 | For thus sayeth ye LORDE God: Where as there dwelt a M. in one cite, there shalbe left scarce an C. therin: and where yere dwelt an C. there shal scarce ten be left for the house off Israel. |
| 5:4 | Neuertheles, thus sayeth the LORDE vnto ye house of Israel: Seke after me, ad ye shal lyue, |
| 5:5 | but seke not after Bethel. Come not at Galgal, and go not to Bersaba: for Galgal shall be caried awaye captyue, and Bethel shal come to naught. |
| 5:6 | Seke the LORDE, yt ye maye lyue: lest the house of Ioseph be brent with fyre and cosumed, and lest there be none to quench Bethel. |
| 5:7 | Ye turne the lawe to wormwod, and cast downe rightuousnes vnto the grounde. |
| 5:8 | The LORDE maketh the vij. starres and the Oryons, he turneth the night in to daye, and off the daye he maketh darcknesse. He calleth ye waters of the see, and poureth them out vpon the playne grounde: the LORDE is his name. |
| 5:9 | He rayseth destruccion vpon the mightie people, & bryngeth downe the stronge holde: |
| 5:10 | but they owe him euel will, yt reproueth them openly: and who so telleth the the playne treuth, they abhorre him. |
| 5:11 | For so moch the as ye oppresse ye poore, and robbe him of his best sustenaunce: therfore, where as ye haue buylded houses off square stone, ye shall not dwell in them. Maruelos pleasaunt vynyardes shall ye plante, but the wyne of the shal ye not drynke: and why? |
| 5:12 | as for the multitude of youre wickednesses and youre stoute synnes, I knowe them right well. Enemies are ye off the rightuous, ye take rewardes, ye oppresse the poore in iudgment. |
| 5:13 | Therfore the wyse must now be fayne to holde his tuge, so wicked a tyme is it. |
| 5:14 | Seke after the thinge that is good, & not euell, so shall ye lyue: yee the LORDE God off hoostes shal be with you, acordinge to youre owne desyre. |
| 5:15 | Hate the euell, and loue the good: set vp right agayne in the porte: & (no doute) the LORDE God of hoostes shall be mercifull vnto the remnaunt of Ioseph. |
| 5:16 | Yff no (sayeth the LORDE God, the God of hoostes) there shal be mourninge in all stretes, yee they shal saye i euery strete: alas, alas. They shall call the housbonde man to lamentacio, and soch as can mourne, to mournynge. |
| 5:17 | In all vynyardes there shal be heuynesse, for I will come amonge you, sayeth the LORDE. |
| 5:18 | Wo be vnto them that desyre the daye off ye LORDE: Wherfore wolde ye haue it? As for that daye of the LORDE, it shalbe darcke ad not cleare: |
| 5:19 | Yee like as when a ma runeth fro a lyon, and a Beer meteth with him: or, whe he commeth into the house, and leeneth his honde vpon the wall, a serpent byteth him. |
| 5:20 | Shall not the daye of the LORDE be darcke, and not cleare? shal it not be cloudy, and no shyne in it? |
| 5:21 | I hate and abhorre youre holy dayes, ad where as ye cense me when ye come together I will not accepte it. |
| 5:22 | And though ye offre me brentofferinges and meatofferinges, yet haue I no pleasure therin: As for youre fat thankofferynges, I wil not loke vpon them. |
| 5:23 | Awaye with that noyse of thy songes, I wil not heare thy playes of musick: |
| 5:24 | but se that equyte flowe as the water, and rightuousnesse as a mightie streame. |
| 5:25 | O ye house of Israel, gaue ye me offeringes and sacrifices those xl. yeares longe in the wyldernesse? |
| 5:26 | Yet haue ye set vp tabernacles to youre Moloch, and ymages of youre Idols, Yee ad the starre of youre god Rempha, figures which ye made to worshipe them. |
| 5:27 | Therfore wil I cause you be caried awaye beyonde Damascus, sayeth the LORDE, whose name is the God off hoostes. |
