| 1:1 | Now the word of the Lord came vnto Ionah the sonne of Amittai, saying, |
| 1:2 | Arise, goe to Nineueh that great citie, and cry against it: for their wickednes is come vp before me. |
| 1:3 | But Ionah rose vp to flee vnto Tarshish, from the presence of the Lord, and went downe to Ioppa, and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he payed the fare thereof, and went downe into it, to goe with them vnto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. |
| 1:4 | But the Lord sent out a great winde into the sea, and there was a mightie tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken. |
| 1:5 | Then the Mariners were afraid, and cried euery man vnto his god, and cast foorth the wares that were in the ship, into the sea, to lighten it of them: but Ionah was gone downe into the sides of the ship, and hee lay, and was fast asleepe. |
| 1:6 | So the shipmaster came to him, and said vnto him; What meanest thou, O sleeper? Arise, call vpon thy God, if so be that God wil thinke vpon vs, that we perish not. |
| 1:7 | And they said euery one to his fellow; Come, and let vs cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this euil is vpon vs. So they cast lots, and the lot fell vpon Ionah. |
| 1:8 | Then said they vnto him, Tel vs, we pray thee, for whose cause this euill is vpon vs: What is thine occupation? and whence commest thou? What is thy countrey? and of what people art thou? |
| 1:9 | And hee said vnto them, I am an Hebrew, and I feare the Lord the God of heauen, which hath made the sea, and the dry land. |
| 1:10 | Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and saide vnto him; Why hast thou done this? (for the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.) |
| 1:11 | Then said they vnto him, What shall we doe vnto thee, that the sea may be calme vnto vs? (for the sea wrought and was tempestuous.) |
| 1:12 | And he said vnto them, Take me vp, and cast mee foorth into the sea; so shall the sea be calme vnto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is vpon you. |
| 1:13 | Neuerthelesse the men rowed hard to bring it to the land, but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them. |
| 1:14 | Wherefore they cried vnto the Lord, and said, We beseech thee, O Lord, We beseech thee, let vs not perish for this mans life, and lay not vpon vs, innocent blood: for thou, O Lord, hast done as it pleased thee. |
| 1:15 | So they tooke vp Ionah, and cast him foorth into the sea, and the sea ceased from her raging. |
| 1:16 | Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice vnto the Lord, and made vowes. |
| 1:17 | Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow vp Ionah, and Ionah was in the belly of the fish three dayes, and three nights. |

| 1:8 | Then said they vnto him, Tell vs for whose cause this euill is vpon vs? what is thine occupation? and whence commest thou? which is thy countrey? and of what people art thou? |
| 1:9 | And he answered them, I am an Ebrewe, and I feare the Lord God of heauen, which hath made the sea, and the dry lande. |
| 1:10 | Then were the men exceedingly afrayde, and said vnto him, Why hast thou done this? (for the men knewe, that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had tolde them) |
| 1:11 | Then saide they vnto him, What shall we doe vnto thee, that the sea may be calme vnto vs? (for the sea wrought and was troublous) |
| 1:12 | And he said vnto them, Take me, and cast me into the sea: so shall the sea be calme vnto you: for I knowe that for my sake this great tempest is vpon you. |
| 1:13 | Neuerthelesse, the men rowed to bring it to the lande, but they coulde not: for the sea wrought, and was troublous against them. |
| 1:14 | Wherefore they cryed vnto the Lord, and said, We beseech thee, O Lord, we beseech thee, let vs not perish for this mans life, and lay not vpon vs innocent blood: for thou, O Lord, hast done, as it pleased thee. |

| 1:3 | And Ionas made him ready to fle vnto Tharsis from the presence of the Lorde, and gat hym downe to Ioppa: where he founde a shyp ready for to go vnto Tharsis. So he payde hys fare, and wente aborde, that he myght go with them vnto Tharsis, from the presence of the Lorde. |
| 1:4 | But the Lorde hurled a greate wynde into the see, and there was a myghtye tempest in the see: so that the shyppe was in ieoperdy of goynge in peces. |
| 1:5 | Then the maryners were afrayde, and cryed euery man vnto his God: and the goodes that were in the shyppe, they cast into the see, to lyghten it of them. But Ionas gatt hym vnder the hatches, where he layed him downe & slombred. |
| 1:6 | So the master of the shyppe came to him and sayde vnto him: why slomberest thou? Up, call vpon thy God: yf God (happely) wyll thynke vpon vs, that we perysh not. |
| 1:7 | And they sayde one to another: come, let vs cast lottes: that we maye knowe, for whose cause we are thus troubled. And so they cast lottes, and the lot fell vpon Ionas. |
| 1:8 | Then sayd they vnto him: tel vs, for whose cause are we thus troubled? what is thyne occupacyon? whence commest thou? what countre man art thou, and of what nacion? |
| 1:9 | He answered them: I am an Ebrue, and I feare the Lorde God of heauen, whych made both the see, & drye lande. |
| 1:10 | Then were the men exceadyngly afrayed & sayde vnto hym: why dydest thou so? (for they knewe, that he was fled from the presence of the Lorde, because he had tolde them) |
| 1:11 | & sayd moreouer vnto him: What shall we do vnto the, that the see maye ceasse from troublynge vs? (for the see wrought and was troublous) |
| 1:12 | he answered them: Take me, and cast me into the see, so shall it lett you be in rest: for I wote, it is for my sake, that this great tempeste is come vpon you. |
| 1:13 | Neuerthelesse, the men assayed wyth rowynge, to brynge the shyppe to lande: but it wolde not be, because the see wrought so: & was so troublous agaynst them. |
| 1:14 | Wherfore they cryed vnto the Lord, & sayde: O Lord let vs not perysh for thys mans death, nether laye thou innocent bloude vnto our charge: for thou, O Lord, hast done, euen as thy pleasure was. |
| 1:15 | So they toke Ionas, and cast hym into the see, and the see lefte ragynge, |
| 1:16 | And the men feared the Lorde exceadyngly, doyng sacryfyces and makinge vowes vnto the Lorde. |
